WILLIAM COLE (b c1598) and SARAH [COLE] and their descendantsfrom page 6b-1

William's parents were Humphrey Cole and Mary MottSarah's parents and birthdate are not known to us

A. William 2 Cole was born about 1598 Tillingham, Essex. He immigrated to America about 1618 on the Neptune and settled in Warwick River Co VA (later Warwick Co). He married Sarah [Cole]; probably at least six children.

In 1642 William bought 100 acres in Accawmack Co VA (Northamption Co after 1643), and later moved his family to St Mary's Co MD.

He died about 1669 St Jerome, St Mary's Co, age about 71. His will, dated 25 Mar 1659, was proved 17 Jul 1669 St Mary's Co, with his widow Sarah as executrix.

Earlier we thought, as do many researchers, that William first married a woman named Francis, who immigrated to America in 1616 on the Susan. The passenger list of the Susan, however, shows Francis asmale, probably a kinsman of William's. While it is possible William did have an unidentified first wife, we now believe that the story of his marrying Francis is most likely a misunderstanding of the passenger list.

1. William3 Coale, born about 1632 in VA, married Hester [Cole], Hannah [Coale],and Elizabeth Thomas -- see page 6b-4.

2. John 3 Cole was born in VA about 1634. He probably married (--?--) [Cole] before 1655; at least one child. He married Mary Beedle about 1663; probably at least two or three children. We don't know the birth order of all the children. Beginning in 1672, John was a tavern keeper in Townfield, Northampton Co, on the Eastern Shore of VA. He died about 1705, age about 71. We don't know anything about the Beedle family.

a. Richard4 Cole was born about 1655.

b. William4 Cole.

c. Robert4 Cole.

d. John 4 Cole , born about 1669, married Johanna Garrett and Diana Hawkins -- see page 6b-5.

THOMAS COLE (b c1603) and PRISCILLA [COLE] and their descendantsfrom page 6b-1

Thomas' parents were Humphrey Cole and Mary MottPriscilla's parents and birthdate are not known to us

B. Thomas2 Cole was born about 1603 Essex. Earlier we thought he came to Virginia in 1632, but now think he was probably a passenger on the Transport, which arrived in Virginia from London 4 Jul 1635. It is possible, of course, that he traveled between England and America more than once.

He settled first in Accawmack Co VA. He married Priscilla [Cole]; at least one child. They were in Maryland by 1649, probably Baltimore Co, and by 1656 they were in Providence Co MD. He and his nephew William Coale, page 6b-4, were acknowledged Quakers by 14 Jan 1657/58.84

In 166886 he patented a plantation of 550 acres, which he called Cole's Harbor, today the area around Baltimore's Inner Harbor. See Section 6a for more on this, also page 6b-8 of this Section.

Thomas' daughter Sarah was his only heir. We don't know when he died, except that it was before Dec 1679, when his son-in-law Charles Gorsuch sold part of Cole's Harbor, which his wife had inherited.

We don't know where Thomas and Priscilla lived in Baltimore Co. Earlier we had assumed they lived on the Cole's Harbor plantation. Recently, however, we have learned they didn't keep the property long, and probably never lived on it at all. Thomas most likely purchased the plantation only as an investment. Many early settlers, who had the means to do so, purchased undeveloped land for later sale at a profit. We wonder if their leaving Baltimore County may have been partly because of Thomas' becoming a Quaker and wanting to be in a more populated area. In any case, we wish they had kept Cole's Harbor in the family!

The development of counties in Maryland, as in other early states, is interesting. In 1635 Thomas settled in Accawmack Co, which became Northamption Co after 1643. Anne Arundel Co was established 1650, but in 1654 its name was changed to Providence Co. After only four years, in 1658 its name was changed back to Anne Arundel. Note, this was during the Commonwealth, and names of other counties were also changed; for example, St Mary's Co became Potomac Co, and (old) Charles Co became Patuxent Co. Later they were reconfigured, and names changed again.

PRISCILLA's NAME -- Many researchers associate the name Godfrey with Priscilla. Some think her father was John Godfrey, who mentioned Thomas, Priscilla and Sarah Cole in his will of 29 May 1672. Others think she married (--?--) Godfrey before she married Thomas Cole. Recently we have found that some now believe her maiden name was Parrish. Unfortunately, we haven't found where or when she was born, or anything else about her.

1. Sarah3 Cole, possibly born about 1655, married Charles Gorsuch; at least three children. His parentswere Rev John Gorsuch and Anne Lovelace.24,25 Secondly, Charles married Ann Hawkins 12 Feb 1690;children not known to us. Her parents were John and Mary Hawkins. Baptized 25 Aug 1642, Charles died before 25 Jun 1716 Baltimore Co MD,24,25 age possibly about 69.

John Gorsuch and Anne Lovelace had other children besides Charles, including daughter Anna, who married John Oldton. In 1691 Oldton murdered Dennis Garrett, BFE's eighth-great-grandfather. For some information about the Gorsuch family, including Charles' grandparents and great-grand-parents, see Section 6a.

WILLIAM COALE and ELIZABETH THOMAS and their descendantsfrom page 6b-2

William's parents were William Cole and Saarah [Cole]Hester's and Hannah's parents are not known to us

Elizabeth's parents were Philip Thomas and Sarah Harrison

1. William3 Coale, born about 1632 in VA, accompanied his father to St Jerome, St Mary's Co MD. LaterWilliam went on to Anne Arundel Co MD. He married Hester [Cole] about 1654; at least one child.

He adopted Quakerism, probably before 1657, about the same time as his uncle Thomas Cole, page 6b-3. William changed the spelling of his name from Cole to Coale, probably in admiration of Josiah Coale, a famous Quaker missionary (no known relation). By 1662 William was minister of the West River Meeting of the Society of Friends of Anne Arundel Co MD.

He and George Wilson traveled in VA, probably during the early 1660s, as “Messengers of the Truth”. This wasn't popular there, and they were imprisoned for many months. George died “in irons” and, although William survived, his health was permanently impaired.

He married Hannah [Coale] about 1666; at least one child. He married Elizabeth Thomas about 1670; at least three children. Her parents were Philip Thomas and Sarah Harrison.

William and Elizabeth lived comfortably on the West River, Anne Arundel Co, the rest of their lives.24

He died 30 Oct 1678 Great Bonnerton Plantation, near West River, age about 46. She died before 24 Feb 1726, when her will was proved.

There is a Quaker burying ground in West River, where for many years we kept our sailboat and liked the area very much. We are pleased to know that our kinfolk lived there.

a. William4 Coale Jr, born 21 Jul 1655 Anne Arundel Co MD, married Elizabeth Thurston about 1685; at least one child: William, born 2 Apr 1686. Elizabeth's father was Thomas Thurston, a Quaker minister who had preached with Josiah Coale. William died 1700, age about 45. Elizabeth died 27 Feb 1709/10.

We have no explanation for William and his younger half-brother both being named William; perhaps they had different first or middle names.

b. William4 Coale III, born 20 Aug 1667, married Elizabeth Sparrow 30 Jul 1689; ten or more children, including the two below. She was born 20 Oct 1867. He died Jun 1715 Baltimore Co MD, age 47.85

i. Thomas5 Coale was born 1704/05.

ii. Sarah5 Coale, born Feb 1705/06, married Aquilla Massey.

For a little more information about Sarah and Aquilla, and a past misunderstanding concerning them and her brother Thomas, see page 6b-11.

c. Elizabeth4 Coale, born 30 Aug 1671, married Nathan Smith; at least one child, Susanna. Elizabeth died 9 Dec 1746, age 75.

Their descendants married into the Magruder, Selby and other well-known families in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties MD. Rev 03/07

JOSEPH COLE (est b c1688) and SUSANNAH [COLE] and their descendantsfrom page 6b-5

Joseph's parents were John Cole and Johanna GarrettSusannah's parents and birthdate are not known to us

i. Joseph5 Cole,1 born Baltimore Co MD, married Susannah [Cole] about 1716; at least two children. Some say her maiden name was Darwell. He died about 1719 Baltimore Co, age possibly about 31.

We don't know when Joseph was born. Based on the admittedly rather vague birthdates of his siblings, we estimate he was probably born about 1688. We know his father gave him 100 acres of land in 1712, and we know Joseph died before 3 Mar 1720, when his will was proved.

Also, we don't know when or where Susannah was born or who her parents were, except that there is said to be a family tradition that she was a relative of William Penn.

Her daughter Sarah was bound out for at least a few years before Sarah's marriage to Anthony Chamness in 1735, so we think Susannah probably died by 1730 if not earlier.

a) Sarah6 Cole, born 1 Jul 1718 Baltimore Co MD, married Anthony Chamness 24 Nov 1735 St Paul's Parish, Baltimore Co;24 twelve chldren. His parents were John Chamness and Ann Jones. Sarah died 1765, age about 47. Born 17 Feb 1713 East Smithfield, London, Anthony died 20 Sep 1777, age 64. They were buried in the cemetery of the Cane Creek Quaker Meeting, Alamance Co NC.

During our 1997 trip to North Carolina, we found their grave memorial. The cemetery is located near Snow Camp NC, at the intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and Kimesville Road.

The Meeting was established 7 Oct 1751. It would have been on the edge of the frontier at that time, in Johnston District (or possibly Granville, boundaries vague) before Orange Co was formed in 1752. In 1770, the Meeting remained in Orange Co but many members lived in newly formed Chatham Co, creating some confusion for later researchers. Alamance Co, where the Meeting is now, was formed in 1849.

One resource we found interesting in the State Library of North Carolina is an unpublished manuscript History and Genealogy of the American Descendants of John and Ann Chamness of London, England, edited and compiled by Zimri Hanson in 1922, and edited and compiled by Agnes Hussey Stevens in 1996. The following paragraphs are taken from this source.

ANTHONY's EARLY LIFE -- His parents, John and Ann Chamness (or Champness), lived in London. Tradition says that, at the age of about 13, Anthony was stolen off the London Bridge or decoyed on board a vessel which immediately sailed for Philadelphia. There is, however, an indenture registered for him on 9 Feb 1724 (o.s.), so it is possible he came willingly.

In any case, he "was obliged to endure much of the privations of pioneer life, which consisted largely in clearing away the forests and preparing the soil for cultivation." By or soon after the time he was of age, he had drifted into Baltimore Co MD, where he found Sarah Cole. "They were of kindred spirit and similar condition in life. She was bound out in a similar manner as he was." [She was an orphan.] "She was more than five years his junior, and could not get release to marry until she came of age. He set in and helped her work out her time."

THEIR FAMILY -- When they married, they had nothing with which to begin housekeeping, except a wooden spoon Anthony had made and a broken wooden bowl Sarah had found. "Their kitchen, parlor and bedroom were combined in one room, called a cabin."

They moved to Frederick Co MD about 1741, then to the area in North Carolina which about 1747 or 1748 became Orange Co. They probably never owned any property until some time after they moved into the wilderness of NC. Their farm there was about ½ mile west of Cane Creek Meeting.

The Chamness family became prominent in the area. The manuscript goes on to describe in some detail the fine farm and large dwelling that Anthony and Sarah established, the contributions they made to the Meeting and to the community, and the excellent reputation of the family.

Thomas married Sarah Broad about 1719;8 six children born Baltimore Co. Her father was John Broad, thesecond husband of Barbara [--?--] [Garrett], Section 6a. Sarah's mother was John's first wife, whose name we don't know. Thomas Cole died after 1781, age at least 91.

There has been much confusion over the question of Sarah's surname. Many have thought she was married to Aquilla Massey before she married Thomas Cole. One of the reasons was that Aquilla was said to have called Thomas Cole his brother-in-law, and made him guardian of his children.

The fact is that the Sarah who married Aquilla 7 Jan 1724/25, in Anne Arundel Co, was actually Sarah Coale, born 1705/06, daughter of William Coale III and Elizabeth Sparrow, page 6b-4. Aquilla did call “Thomas Cole” brother-in-law and did make him guardian of his children, but was referring to Sarah Coale's brother Thomas Coale, born 1704/05.85 Aquilla died 8 Mar 1738/39.

BROAD COLE (b 1725) and ATHALIAH DIMMITT and their descendantsfrom page 6b-11

Broad's parents were Thomas Cole and Sarah BroadAthaliah's parents were James Dimmitt and Barbara Broad

e) Broad 6 Cole ,1 born 12 Aug 1725 Baltimore Co MD, married Athaliah Dimmitt about 1754 Baltimore Co MD;1 at least six children born Baltimore Co. Her parents were James Dimmitt and Barbara Broad .

Probably born 21 Feb 1738 Baltimore Co, Athaliah died before 1790 Huntingdon Co PA. Broad died about 1800 Huntingdon Co, age about 75.

This is the marriage, between two great-grandchildren of Barbara [--?--], which makes tracing our Cole lineage so much easier!

Some of our earlier difficulties difficulties in trying to research the family were because we thought Broad's first name was Brand. We just couldn't find anyone with that first name. It turned out that we had misread some of BFE's grandmother Edith Cole Fisher's handwriting. She had spelled his name Braud. Once we realized our mistake, our efforts became much more productive.

Incidentally, we later found the Braud spelling variation in several other documents. As all researchers know, early spellings varied and so do later ones. And very recently we've heard of a philanthropist whose surname is “Broad” but pronounces it as if it were spelled “Brode”.

Broad and Athaliah, probably with others from Baltimore Co, moved to Pennsylvania, but we don't know exactly when. Their son Thomas is believed to have married in Maryland about 1778, and his first child was born in Bedford Co PA in June 1779, so we earlier thought the move might have been to Bedford Co in late 1778 or early 1779.

But, it is said the family settled in Cumberland Co PA, in an area which in 1771 became part of Bedford Co and in 1787 became part of Huntingdon Co. This could imply they were there before 1771. However, the first known records of the Cole family are said to be on the tax rolls of Dublin Township, Bedford Co, in 1773. We now believe they probably moved about 1772. Perhaps Thomas returned to Maryland for his marriage.

We don't know where Broad and Athaliah were buried, possibly on their farm with the site now lost.

They may have had another son, William, and other daughters, in addition to the children listed below. Birthdates of the children, except for Thomas, are not known for certain. We aren't sure whether Broad or James, or an unnamed daughter, was the oldest child.

i) Broad 7 Cole , born about 1754, married Elizabeth [Cole] -- see page 6b-21.

ii) James7 Cole, born about 1755, may possibly have married Anne Christopher.

It is said that in 1800 he was living in Huntingdon Co PA, only the second family away from his brother Thomas Cole. He isn't identified in the 1810 census of Huntingdon Co or Bedford Co PA. James may have accompanied his brother Thomas in the move to Fairfield Co OH in 1801, but does not appear in early tax records of Fairfield Co or Pickaway Co, so he may have gone on to another part of Ohio.

iii) Thomas7 Cole, born 15 Mar 1757, married Elizabeth Stevens -- see page 6b-23.

iv) Joshua7 Cole may have married Ann Lee 13 Oct 1789 Baltimore Co MD.

He is said to be on the 1806 list of taxables in Amanda Township, Fairfield Co OH, so probably came from Huntingdon Co PA with his brother Thomas in 1801. He probably moved on to Franklin Co OH, but records of that county were destroyed by fire in 1879. He doesn't appear in 1820-1850 census indexes of Ohio, so may have moved farther west.

Dimmitt and Martha moved to Indiana about 1835. We don't know how Martha was able to take care of the family after Dimmitt died, with the youngest child only about four years old.

BROAD COLE (b 1754) and ELIZABETH [COLE] and their descendantsfrom page 6b-17

Broad's parents were Broad Cole and Athaliah DimmittElizabeth's parents and birthdate are not known to us

i) Broad 7 Cole ,1,14 born about 1754 Baltimore Co MD,1 married Elizabeth [Cole] about 1775, probably in Pennsylvania; probably ten children, including the children shown below plus an unnamed son before their son Shadrach was born and three unnamed daughters, birth order not certain. Broad died about 1831 Madison Twp, Pickaway Co OH, age about 77, buried Hopewell Methodist Church, Franklin Co OH.

Most of this and the following six paragraphs are from "Dr. Miller's manuscript" referenced on page 6b-1. Broad Cole (born about 1754) moved to Pennsylvania when a young man, probably with his parents. "During the Revolutionary War he returned to MD on account of the Indian troubles in PA."

Broad is on lists of soldiers from Bedford Co PA who served in the Continental Line (no date), as a Ranger on the Frontier in Washington Co PA 1778-1783, and as a member of Capt John Gelbreath's company of Huntingdon Co militia in 1788. An interesting quotation: Broad "was on the frontier, assisting in the protection of the settlers from the depredations of the Indians during the War of the Revolution. He was not an enlisted soldier, but being a strong, earnest patriot, he felt that his first duty was to his country, and that he should render it all the aid in his power."

He was taxed in Shirley Township, Bedford Co PA, 1782-1784. In 1788-1792 he was still taxed in Shirley Twp, but by then it was in Huntingdon Co. In the 1790 census he was in Huntingdon. He must have moved from Pennsylvania to Bourbon Co KY in 1792 or 1793, because he was on tax lists there in 1793 and 1795.

He probably left Kentucky before 1800. He may have gone prospecting by himself, as at least some of his family remained in Kentucky. He may have returned to Pennsylvania, perhaps because of his father's death, and may have accompanied his brother Thomas on the 1801 move to Fairfield Co OH.

In 1803 Methodist Bishop Asbury preached at Broad's cabin "in the afternoon (possibly 3:00 pm) of aweekday...the first sermon heard in that township..." We think this was in Ohio, as we have seen other documents concerning Bishop Asbury's being in Ohio in the autumn of 1803. We assume the cabin was on the land of Broad's brother Thomas, page 6b-23.

Broad purchased land in what became Madison Township, Pickaway Co OH in Apr 1805. We think he, Dimmitt, and Shadrack Cole were in Amanda Twp, Fairfield Co OH by 1806.

Broad's wife Elizabeth probably died before 1820, but it is not known whether in Kentucky before they moved to Ohio, or in Ohio. Broad's death date is also unknown; his estate was administered in Pickaway Co OH in 1831 or 1832.

ELIZABETH's NAME -- We have tried to find Elizabeth's maiden name, so far with no success. When we found that Broad and Elizabeth's oldest son Shadrach, page 6b-27, gave his son Stephen "Alson" for his middle name, we began to hope that Elizabeth's name might have been Alson. Stephen named his second son Shadrach Alson, page 6b-44, which makes us think the name must have had significance in the family, but we have found no evidence that Elizabeth's surname was Alson. We now think it may possibly have been Lane.

FINDING THEIR GRAVES -- We believe that Broad and Elizabeth lived the last part of their lives in Madison Twp, Pickaway Co, and we located their land there, so we concentrated on the northeastern areaof that county in our search for their graves. On trips over several years we looked without success.

Then, in 2004 we learned from researcher David Ross of Colorado that they were listed in Volume 2 of Franklin County Ohio Cemeteries as buried in the cemetery of Hopewell Methodist Church in that county. On

our trip to Ohio in Nov 2005 we found the church on London-Lancaster Road (T233) on the east side of the bridge across Little Walnut Creek, but there was no graveyard in sight. After driving the nearby roads, we finally saw a few gravestones in the distance across a field to the west of Braun Road (T232), about a half-mile from the church by road.

With no other possibilities seen, we entered the private drive at 8259 Braun Road leading back to a house just north of the site. There was a gate, with a sign showing a telephone number to be called if one wanted to go to the cemetery. The gate was open, so we were able to drive along a sort of wide path lying on the east bank of the creek. A local man confirmed that we had found the church cemetery, and said that the church building had been moved when the county road was realigned to the south many years ago. Our excitement at finding the cemetery faded when we found that, even though some of the wrought iron fence was still in place, few stones remain. Many were apparently carried away in floods, and some may now be in the foundations of the new bridge or other structures.

Rickenbacker Field is on the other side of the creek. An interesting note is that a few stones, which had turned up during the construction there, were moved and placed in a little plot in the cemetery.

Our careful search of the now-abandoned cemetery for stones of the Coles was unsuccessful, but we believe they were buried there. It is not far north of their farm in the adjoining county (London-Lancaster Road marks the line between Pickaway and Franklin counties), and no better possibilities have been seen.

(c) John8 Cole married Elizabeth [Cole]. On 21 Jan 1832 they were living Franklin Co OH.

THOMAS COLE (b 1757) and ELIZABETH STEVENS (b 1759) and their descendantsfrom page 6b-17

Thomas' parents were Broad Cole and Athaliah DimmittElizabeth's parents are not known to us

iii) Thomas4 Cole,1,15 born 15 Mar 1757 Baltimore Co MD, married Elizabeth Stevens 9 Jul 187853 in MD; eleven children. Born May 1759 in PA, she died 27 Sep 1831 Fairfield Co OH, age 72 years 4 months.41 He died 20 Aug 1840 Fairfield Co, age 83 years, 5 months, 5 days.41

Thomas and Elizabeth must have moved to Pennsylvania shortly after their marriage. He was in the Bedford Co PA militia with his brother Broad.

According to "Dr Miller's manuscript", page 6b-1, federal land in the Northwest Territory became available for sale on 10 May 1800, including attractive farmland in what in 1803 became south-central Ohio. Our Cole family and many others, including our Glick family, Section 5, were encouraged to move farther west to take advantage of this opportunity. The moves were facilitated by the 1797 completion of Zane's Trace, the pioneer road from Wheeling via Zanesville and Lancaster (county seat of Fairfield Co Dec 1800) to Chillicothe, and then to Limestone (Maysville) KY. The dangerous river journey used previously was no longer necessary.

After his father's death, Thomas perhaps no longer felt the need to remain in Huntingdon Co PA. He sold his farm 12 May 1801 and started with his large family for Fairfield Co OH. At least one son-in-law, Daniel (or David) Swope, is said to have migrated with him, probably along with others from the Huntingdon area, and possibly his brothers Joshua and Dimmitt. His brother Broad may have helped with the move, or may have come from Kentucky to join him in Ohio.

Note, we later found that one of Thomas' daughters was married to David Swope, and did not find any married to Daniel Swope. There were, however, three daughters for whom we haven't found names of spouses, so cannot completely rule out a Daniel.

On 16 Jul 1801 Thomas registered for a whole section (640 acres) of land, probably Section 8, in what laterbecame Amanda Township, Fairfield Co, at $2/acre, paying $322 down, which was the required one-fourth of the price. Presumably the others in the family helped with clearing the land and getting it under cultivation. Later the others took up land of their own and Thomas added a half-section on 21 Nov 1805.

He built a schoolhouse on his land, and hired Abraham Cole (his son?) as teacher.23 Neighbors could send their children and pay pro-rata. It is said the teacher received $8.00 per term.

A family story says Thomas once carried a flax spinning wheel on his shoulder to Chillicothe for repair, and home again, 60 miles round trip.23

Thomas is said to have been highly regarded during his lifetime, not only as a citizen and successful farmer, but also as an "old-school" Baptist preacher. (We note that his brother Broad was an ardent Methodist.)

Thomas and Elizabeth were buried in a corner of the field across the road from their son Broad's house.41 In May 2002 we found the house, page 9b-37, and believe we found their burial place. Although in 1984 their gravestones were recorded, in 2002 we couldn't be sure because the area was so overgrown with poison ivy, other weeds, and trash, that no stones were visible. We went again Jun 2003, but weren't prepared with boots and heavy clothing. We'd like to go again.

(a) Mary5 Cole, born 3 Jun 1779 Bedford Co PA, married David Swope, who was born 4 Jul 1771. He died 9 Aug 1826, age 55, and she died 20 (or 24) Feb 1857, age 77. They were buried in the family cemetery near their home in Fairfield Co OH.41

They may have had son or grandson Thomas, who in 1875 had land in Section 8 including the area where the cemetery is located. We visited the cemetery in May 2002 and, sadly, found it in a state of dreadful vandalism.

It's located on the north side of Swope Road, near the bend in the road, on a little knoll. It's surrounded by a stone wall. At first, seeing it as we drove along the road, we thought the wall was the foundation of a building, and didn't realize it was the cemetery.

Later, we talked to the man who had just purchased the farm of Mary's father Thomas, and he told us the plot within the stone wall was the Swope cemetery. Of about 14 graves, not one stone was left standing, and only one was partly readable ("Emma J w.o. R.W.Peters"). Even many of the large blocks of stone in the wall were broken. They were huge and it must have taken a lot of effort to desecrate the cemetery in this way.

(b) Abraham5 Cole, born 18 May 1781 Bedford Co PA, married Verlinda Williams 2 Oct 1804; perhaps ten children. She was born 31 Jan 1781. He died 18 Oct 1841 Hancock Co OH, age 60, and Verlinda died only 9 days later, 27 Oct 1841, age 60. They were buried Lee Cemetery, Hancock Co OH.

Athalia's younger sister Ann married Stephen Cole, a brother of Athalia's husband. In other words, two sisters married two brothers. The two sisters were second cousins, once removed, of the two brothers.

(h) Thomas5 Cole was born 1 Jan 1797 Huntingdon Co PA.

According to a 1984 cemetery listing, Thomas died 1819 in the 23rd year of his age, and was buried across the road from the house his brother Broad later built, page 6b-37.

STEPHEN COLE and ELIZABETH GORSUCH (bc1782) and their descendantsfrom pages 6b-7 and 6b-20

Stephen's parents were Salathiel Cole and Sarah [Cole]Rachel's and Elizabeth's parents were Charles Gorsuch and Eleanor Bond

ii. Stephen8 Cole,23 born 16 Nov 1767 Baltimore Co MD, married Rachel Gorsuch 2 Nov 1792 Baltimore Co.She was born about 1770 in MD. Her parents were Charles Gorsuch and Eleanor Bond. Rachel probably diedabout 1802, age about 32.

Secondly, Stephen married Elizabeth Gorsuch 4 Feb 1803 Baltimore Co. She was born about 1782 Baltimore Co. Her parents were Charles Gorsuch and Eleanor Bond. Stephen died about 1826 Amanda Twp,Fairfield Co OH, age about 59. Elizabeth died about 1853 Licking Co OH, age about 71.

We believe this is the Stephen Cole who, in 1814, "built a grist mill and carding machine combined, on what is called Cole's Run, heading at a spring in Section 8, the mill being situated on Section 7." 23 We've studied the maps but can't be sure of the location described.

Probably Rachel had died, and perhaps Elizabeth had been caring for the children, when Stephen and Elizabeth married. Consecutive marriages to sisters was not uncommon; it was necessary to have a spouse all the time if possible, and one from the family would be considered a good match.

We have specific birthdates for only two of the children, so the order below may not be correct.

-- Children of Stephen Cole and Rachel Gorsuch --

a) Salathiel9 Cole, probably born about 1794 Baltimore Co MD, probably married Emily Beers87 21 Feb 1841 Pickaway Co OH; daughter Mary, born about 1842 Pickaway Co. Emily was born 24 Jan 1814 in PA. Her parents were John Beers and Martha Bodine. Secondly, Emily marriedGeorge Washington Nicholson 1 Sep 1848 Miami Co IN; three children 1849-1859 Erie, Miami Co.

Salathiel is not mentioned in his father's will in 1826. In the probate record of 1830, he is shown as "living in Virginia".47

b) Stephen9 Cole, born about 1795 Baltimore Co MD, married Ann Cole -- see page 6b-35.

c) Thomas9 Cole, born 20 Mar 1795/96 Baltimore Co MD, married Athalia Cole -- see page 6b-36.

d) Charles9 Cole was born Baltimore Co MD. He died Baltimore Co, probably in infancy.

e) Micajah9 Cole was born about 1801 Baltimore Co MD. In his father's will of 1826, he was living Fairfield Co OH, and in the probate of 1830, he was living Licking Co OH. He married Catherine [Cole]probably about 1832; at least six children born in OH. Catherine was born about 1808 in VA. In the 1850 census the household included Micajah (49), Catherine (42), Abram (18), Salathiel (16), Frederick(14), Ann (11), Mahala (8), and George (3). In 1870, the household consisted of Catherine and George.

h) Abraham9 Cole, born Fairfield Co OH before 1808, married Phoebe Harrison 23 Jul 1828.1

In his father's will of 1826, he is shown as living in Fairfield Co; no county is shown for him in the probate of 1830.47 He may be the oldest of Elizabeth Gorsuch's children, rather than his sister Polly.

i) Jehu9 Cole was born 1808-1812. He died 1826-1830, age possibly about 18.

We believe he was the minor son referred to as "John" in his father's will of 1826. In the probate of 1830 he is shown as Jehu, deceased, having left a minor son Jehu.47 Benjamin Moore was appointed guardian of Jehu Cole 20 Aug 1830.1 We believe the guardianship had to be for the deceased Jehu's minor son Jehu.

j) Richard9 Cole, born 1808-1812 Fairfield Co OH, probably married Hannah Brownell 25 Aug 1831.1

In his father's will of 1826, he is shown as a minor. In the probate of 1830, no county is shown for him.47

k) Eliza9 Cole, born about 1810 Fairfield Co OH, married James Johnson of Monroe Twp, Licking Co OH before 1830;47 at least eight children. Her mother Elizabeth Gorsuch [Cole], age 74, was living with them in 1850.

l) Charles9 Cole, born after 1812 Fairfield Co OH, married Elzira [Cole]1 after 1830.

In his father's will of 1826 and probate of 1830, he and his two younger brothers are shown as minors.47

SHADRACH COLE (b 1778) and MARY MATHENA (b 1778) and their descendantsfrom pages 6b-22 and 6b-32

Shadrach's parents were Broad Cole and Elizabeth [Cole]Mary's parents were Daniel Mathena and Judah [Mathena]

(a) Rev Shadrach 8 Cole 1,16 was born 16 Oct 1778 Baltimore Co MD, and probably came to Kentucky with his parents about 1790-91. He married Mary Mathena about 1800 Bourbon Co KY, probably near Paris, which is about 20 miles northeast of Lexington. She was born 14 Nov 1778, probably Shenandoah Co VA. Her parents were Daniel Mathena and Judah [Mathena]. Mary died about 1836, Pickaway Co OH, age about 56. Shadrachdied 24 Sep 1845 Pickaway Co OH, age about 66.

We don't know when Mary's family came to Kentucky, but her father's will was proved Jan 1804 in Bourbon Co KY. Sometime after the birth of their third child (12 Nov 1804) Shadrach and Mary moved to Ohio, probably with other family members about 1805. Birthdates for some of their children are not known to us; therefore, the birth order we show below may not be correct. Shadrach is shown as a taxpayer in Amanda Twp, Pickaway Co OH, in 1805.

BISHOP ASBURY preached in Shadrach's father's cabin in 1803, so Shadrach was probably associated with some of the early Methodist preachers in the area. We don't know when, but Shadrach became one also.

He was a circuit rider in Ohio, when families lived far apart, here and there in the deep heavily wooded country. He and other pioneer preachers would come at stated times to preach the gospel. They "lived in their saddle bags."16 He was a founding member of the Hedges Chapel Church and was its ‛local preacher'.49

A MUCH-LOVED FAMILY STORY, in ECF's notes, is that once a man said to Rev Cole, "I am going to thrash you." He replied, "All right, but I never enter into any undertaking without asking the Lord's blessing." He was a strong man, so he got off his horse, threw an arm around the bully, forcing him to kneel, then prayed. After that, there was no more talk of thrashing.

Shadrach may have served in the War of 1812, according to a "vanity" book about Pickaway County.

On 21 Jan 1832 Shadrach purchased, for $750.00, the interests of his siblings in 107 acres of land left to them by their father. The land was part of the northwest quarter, section 27, range 21, township 10, Pickaway Co. It was easy to identify, so we visited the nice flat farmland 15 May 2002.

We thought Shadrach and Mary might have been buried in Hedges Chapel Cemetery, or in Mt HarmonCemetery, or possibly in the Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery in Franklin Co, but we weren't able to find their graves. Like many people, they may have been buried on their farm and their gravesites lost.

He married Harriet Bruner 23 Mar 1853 Shelby Co OH;40 nine children. She was born 1829 Greene Co OH. Her parents were Joseph Bruner and (--?--) Cummins.

In 1854 Broad and Harriet moved to Nebraska Territory.40,48 In 1864 they moved to Grand Traverse Co MI, in 1872 to Baldwin City KS, and in 1874 returned to South Bend Precinct, Cass Co NE.

Harriet died 2 Jun 1886, age about 47, on a visit to her brother in Ohio and was buried Port Jefferson OH. Broad died 18 Feb 190152 Ashland, Saunders Co NE, age 75, and was buried Ashland Cemetery, Ashland, Saunders Co. There is a memorial stone for Harriet beside Broad's grave.

We recently found a reproduction of an 1889 "vanity book" about Cass Co NE48 where Broad was living, on 550 acres in South Bend Precinct (South Bend in Cass Co is near Ashland in Saunders Co). The picture we have of him is from this book. The article is very complimentary about his farm, mostly hedged or fenced, with large substantial buildings, including a large residence "where love and fraternal affection reign supreme". It also says that Broad, in his early years, entered the Blendon Young Men's Seminary, later Otterbein University. The first winter there, he taught school for $14 per month and boarded himself (which means he had to obtain, and pay for, lodging and food out of his salary).

Harriet's parents died while she was a minor, and she lived with Broad's brother Wesley. When she was eighteen, she taught school for $1.25 per week, "boarding ‛round" (which means she had to live with students' families but did not have to pay them). Rev 07/01, 05/02, 10/02

ECF quoted from a published article about Broad: "From 1854 to 1864 he lived on a farm near Plattsmouth NE, where he planted 2000 fruit trees and had the finest farm in that pioneer country. Heestablished and was superintendent of the first Sunday School in Plattsmouth. He was a member and took an active part in the first territorial legislature of Nebraska.

"When the early settlers were in serious difficulty arising from the resurvey of government land, by which boundary lines were thrown in confusion, he, as organizer and secretary of what was known as 'the claim club', did much to relieve the complications. He suggested Plattsmouth as the name for that town."

h) Emery Broad10 (Bruner?) Cole, born about 1869, "was the youngest in the family and stayed home to help run the farm near Ashland NE. He married Carrie M [Cole]; one child. She was born 10 Aug 1875. When Emery's father died (18 Feb 1901) "and left him his belongings, he divided with his sisters." Carrie died 17 Dec 1902, age 27, buried Ashland Cemetery beside their son.

ECF said Emery was living Monrovia, Los Angeles Co CA in 1953; we were pleased recently to find more in census records. In 1910, Emery was living with his brother-in-law Prof H Worley in Ashland. In 1920 he was living Monrovia CA, with wife Clara Lydia Stewart. She was born 19 Feb 1879 Saline Co NE. Her parents were William Henry Stewart and Isabelle Naomi Simmons. -- THE MATHENA FAMILY --referenced on page 6b-27

EARLIEST GENERATIONS -- Information, including a description of an original coat of arms, is available about the Mathena/Matheny/Metheny family. Records trace the Mathena lines to eastern France in the 11th

century. First to bear the name was Guy de Vaudrey, Chevalier, Seigneur de Methanay, in the twelfth century.

Spellings varied over the years (Metteneye, Mathenia, Mathena, Metheny, etc.), with "de" used until 1590.Later generations were prominent in Flanders, one of them mayor of Bruges in 1337. Others were

closely associated with the Dukes of Burgundy. One was Chamberlain to Emperor Charles V and went with him to Spain. Information is available about these men and others in the line, and their adventures and accomplishments.

Beginning by 1550, the family was in England. The story of all these early ancestors is fascinating. It would be a wonderful trip to visit some of the sites, including the French village of Mathenay!

Charles Metteneye was born about 1569 in St Botholp's Parish, London. His son William Metteneye, born about 1595, married Elizabeth [Metteneye] and moved to Bosseden,

near Dunkirk in County Kent, before 1640.

THE "IMMIGRANT" -- Daniel Mathena I, son of William and Elizabeth, is referred to by researchers as Daniel I. He was born about 1638, probably in Canterbury, County Kent. He and his brother Michael migrated before 1663 to Surrey Co VA, and Daniel settled in Charles Co MD. He acquired several farms or "plantations" in Charles Co and in VA, including "Hope" on Aquia Creek in present-day Stafford Co VA. We don't know anything more about Michael.

About 1663 in Charles Co MD, Daniel married Sarah Wentworth. Her father was Thomas Wentworth. Born about 1648, she died about 1700, age about 52. Information about the Wentworth family is available.

Note: we have been looking for the site of the 300-acre farm called "Wentworth Woodhouse", where Daniel and Sarah lived in Charles Co MD. In 2002 we visited the Southern Maryland Research Center, at theCollege of Southern Maryland in LaPlata, Charles Co, and read the deed for the land purchased by Daniel from his father-in-law. We also read the deed for some adjoining land purchased by a man who was a witness to Daniel's deed.

Putting all available information together, we are convinced that the site of Wentworth Woodhouse was in Chicamuxen Hundred of Charles Co, on the southeast side of Mattawoman Creek, lying northwest of a linebetween present-day Marbury and Mason Springs, about 8 miles south-southwest of our home in Accokeek MD, as the crow flies.

Note also: we believe Thomas Wentworth named his farm "Wentworth Woodhouse" because that was his ancestral estate in England (or the estate he wished were his). It was named after the two families who were joined by the 1239 marriage of Emma Woodhouse, born 1220, and Robert Wentworth, born 1218. We found anintriguing website (www.wentworthvillage.net) which has a great deal of interesting information about the estate and its buildings, including an enormous two-part house. We highly recommend a visit!

In 1680 Daniel I was a soldier in Capt Brant's Charles Co Rangers, and in 1681 was exiled from Maryland as one of the leaders of the "Protestant Revolution". Apparently he and Sarah never received payment for all of their land in Charles Co. They moved to the "Hope" land in present-day Stafford Co VA, and lived there until he died 14 Oct 1685, age about 77. A tombstone marked "DM" is said to exist today and is believed to be his, but its location isn't known.

A handsome monument to Daniel and Sarah Mathena was erected in the Aquia Creek Episcopal Church yard in Stafford Co, and in 2001 the "Society of the Descendants of the Immigrant Daniel Mathena" was formed. We visited the rolling woodland on the south side of Aquia Creek which we believe to be the site of the original "Hope" farm. It's near present day "Willow Landing", just west of the railroad bridge.

JOSHUA COLE (b 1789) and SUSANNAH RANIER (b 1792) and their descendantsfrom page 6b-22

Joshua's parents were Broad Cole and Elizabeth [Cole]Susannah's parents were Daniel Ranier and Rachel [Ranier]

(e) Joshua8 Cole, born 3 Jul 1789 Baltimore Co MD, married Susannah Ranier 7 Feb 1811 Pickaway Co OH;29,71,73 seven children: three daughters (Cynthia, Rachel, and Susannah) besides the four children below.

Susannah Sr was born 9 Jan 1792 in NJ. Her parents were Daniel and Rachel Ranier. Joshua and Susannah moved to Shelby Co OH in 1822, and were living there when Cole's Chapel was organized in their house, possibly 21 Jan 1832. Note, we have searched unsuccessfully for confirmation of the statement that Cole's Chapel was “organized in their house”. There appears to be no record of such a church in Ohio. Perhaps it was just an informal gathering of neighbors, that set out to organize but never completed the process.

Susannah died 15 Sep 1876 Sidney, Shelby Co OH, age 84. Joshua died 20 Oct 1876 Sidney, age 87, only a little over a month after Susannah. They buried Cole's Chapel Cemetery, Turtle Creek Twp, Shelby Co.42

We visited Cole's Chapel Cemetery in May 2002, and were so pleased to find the gravestones for Joshua and Susannah and two of their children. A War of 1812 marker is by his grave, so we think he probably served in that war, but we don't have any information about it.

There's no evidence of a chapel building now, but it's easy to imagine one on the attractive site, on a little knoll. It's located on Hardin-Wapakaneta Road, between Fort Loramie-Swanders Road and Fort Loramie-Port Jefferson Road, northwest of Sidney, Shelby Co OH.

As with most of the other cemeteries we visited in Ohio, many of the stones are damaged, perhaps largely by weathering and lack of care. There was vandalism but didn't seem to be as much as in some of the other cemeteries we visited, perhaps because it's at the end of a row of houses.

(i) Nancy9 Cole, born 30 Oct 1814 Pickaway Co OH, married William Kennard 25 Apr 1833 Sidney, Shelby Co OH;73 at least one child. Born 3 Jul 1810, William died 7 Aug 1883 Columbus, Bartholomew Co IN, age 73. Nancy died 17 Nov 1903 Columbus IN, age 89.

a) Joshua F10 Kennard, born 4 Aug 1840, married Lucinda Tabor. He died 4 Nov 1917, age 77.

(ii) Broad9 Cole, born 11 Apr 1820 Pickaway Co OH, married Rebecca Stanley 1 Mar 1842; five daughters, the son below and one other son. Broad settled on his father's farm in Turtle Creek Twp and remained until1845, when he and his family moved to Sidney where he was a merchant, then moved back to the farm in 1849. He was a trustee of Turtle Creek Twp for a number of years.71 Born 28 Jun 1823 Ross Co OH, Rebecca died 1891 Shelby Co OH, age about 67. Broad died 21 Aug 1907 Shelby Co, age 87.72 They were buried Graceland Cemetery,42 which is south of Sidney OH, on the west side of County Road A.

Rebecca's mother may have been Mary [Stanley] (1787-1867), buried Coles Chapel Cemetery. A stone is also there for Julia A Cole (1843-1901), who may have been Broad and Rebecca's oldest child.

a) Isaac O10 Cole was born about 1843. He died 1862, age 19, buried Coles Chapel Cemetery, GAR marker.

(iii) Nathan W9 Cole, born 29 Jan 1828 Shelby Co OH, married Martha A [Cole]; probably at least threechildren. He died 18 Feb 1920, age 92, buried Cole's Chapel Cemetery.42

a) Webster10 Cole died 23 Aug 1867, age 4 yr 10 mo 23 da, buried Cole's Chapel Cemetery. Also buried there were an unnamed infant son and another child, stone unreadable.

(iv) Joshua R9 Cole was born 1835 Shelby Co OH. He died of cholera 3 Aug 1854 Shelby Co, age 18 yrs, 11 mos, 21 days, buried Cole's Chapel Cemetery.42

BROAD COLE (b 1802) and LEAH PETERS (b 1806) and their descendantsfrom page 6b-24

Broad's parents were Thomas Cole and Elizabeth StevensLeah's parents were Samuel Peters and Mary Stevenson

(j) Broad8 Cole,1,15 born 23 Sep 1802 Amanda Twp, Fairfield Co OH, married Leah Peters 7 Jan 1827 Fairfield Co; fifteen children. She was born 19 Nov 1806 Manchester, Carroll Co MD. Her parents were Samuel Peters and Mary Stevenson. Broad died 25 Jun 1882, age 79.17 Leah died 21 Jun 1893, age 86. They were buried Lithopolis Cemetery, Lithopolis, Fairfield Co.

Broad was a farmer and stock raiser who lived on the "old homestead" of 228 acres, which he had receivedfrom his father Thomas. It may have been called Big Spring Farm.

THEIR HOUSE -- On 15 May 2002 we visited Amanda Twp and found the house Broad and Leah built 1838. It's located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Winter Road and Cedar Hill Road, Amanda Twp, Fairfield Co. It's brick, two stories, with various additons and much bridal wreath growing around the outside.

We're sure it's their house, because we talked to the man who had recently bought the farm, Greg White. The house was vacant, and we asked if we could walk over to it, and he told us to look at the lintel over the door. It's inscribed "B. Cole -- AD 1838" (the A and D are joined, and there's a little flourish at each end of the lintel) but is hard to see because the porch, which Greg told us was added later, covers the top part of the lintel. Although we had felt sure it was the house, we would never have had it confirmed if it had not happened that Greg was there when we were. We probably wouldn't have gone on the porch if there were no one to ask permission, and we could very well have not noticed the lintel.

Greg said he was going to sell the house and the barns, and we sure wish we could buy them! Thecondition of the house was such that we thought it should be easily restorable. Looking through the windows, we could see beautiful parlors with large sliding wooden doors.

We looked for the graves of Broad's parents, which an 1984 cemetery listing indicated should be across the road under a tree, in a corner of a cornfield. We believe we found the place but, alas, it was so overgrown with poison ivy, other weeds, and jumk, that we couldn't see any stones. We hope to go back in colder weather. It turned out that we went again, in June 2003, but weren't prepared to climb into the weeds. And, we sure hopesomeone buys the house and starts fixing it up pretty soon; it's starting to look rather bad.

THEIR CHILDREN -- Broad and Leah had 15 children. As of 1930, they had 63 grandchildren, 118 great-grandchildren, 31 great-great-grandchildren (subtotal 226) and 80 "affinity" for a total of 306 descendents. It was said that Leah "during the greater part of her life weighed less than 100 pounds", was "a remarkable singer, with a strong and sweet soprano voice" and was "an inveterate pipe smoker as also were her sisters".17

LEAH's PARENTS -- A great deal of information is available about the Peters family. Samuel Peters and Mary Stevenson were married 28 Nov 1795. They had 12 children (Henry, Robinson J, Nathan Wesley, Rachel, Stevenson, Leah, Mary, Andrew, Gideon, Elizabeth, Louis S, and Ebenezer). The family moved from Baltimore Co MD to Fairfield Co OH during the War of 1812.

Samuel Peters was born 27 Nov 1772 in MD; he died 10 Sep 1829. Born 28 Sep 1773, Mary Stevenson died 15 Feb 1861. Her parents: Daniel Stevenson (1737-1827) and Ruth [Stevenson] (1743-1831), early pioneers of Richland Township, and the first Methodist church in the county was built of hewn logs on their land.

(i) Thomas9 Cole,15,23 born 15 Feb 1828 Amanda Twp, Fairfield Co OH, married Mary Jane Courtright 26 Feb 1852 Pickaway Co OH. She was born 16 Sep 1832. Her parents were Jesse Drake Courtright and Sallie Stout, page 6b-38. Mary Jane died 21 Jan 1902, age 69.40 Thomas died 18 May 1910, age 82. They were buried Lithopolis, Fairfield Co OH. We saw their gravestone in May 2002, with others of her family nearby. Eight children: John (1853->1887), Amanda (1854-1928), Emma (1860-1942), Nathan (1861-1862), Alva (1863-1901), George C (1865-1893), Lewis C (1870-1940), and Frank (1872-1940, we think he is the Frank Cole who signed Annie Rebecca's remembrance book, page 6b-50).

Her parents were George W Glazer (Glaze?) and Nancy [Glazer], who came to Pickaway Co 1827. Wesley was a farmer. He and Mary Ann brought up Harriet Bruner after she was orphaned.71 (In 1853 Harriet married Wesley's younger brother Broad, page 6b-28.)

Mary Ann died 8 Jul 1893, age 82. Wesley died 5 Feb 1900 Shelby Co, age 91. They were buried WesleyChapel Cemetery, Franklin Twp, Shelby Co.29,72

Some sources say Wesley had two earlier marriages, but we believe those have been confusedwith other men in the family with the same name.

The children marked + below were buried Wesley Chapel Cemetery.72 Those marked = below are from an 1883 "vanity" book.71 In addition, we have the names Wesley, Marion, Rosco, and Owen, but no other information about them. It's possible Wesley and Marion are middle names, and Rosco and Owen may be the unidentified children below.

We can hardly bear the thought of what the parents went through in December 1860, losing threechildren in less than three weeks.

STEPHEN ALSON COLE (b 1812) and ANNA MAGDALENE GLICK (b 1814)and their descendants

from page 6b-28Stephen's parents were Shadrach Cole and Mary Mathena

Anna Magdalene's parents were Henry Glick and Eva Swander

(vii) Stephen Alson 9 Cole ,16 born 6 Dec 1812 Pickaway Co OH, married Anna Magdalene “Annie” Glick 16 Feb 1834 Fairfield Co OH; nine children. She was born 13 Mar 1814. Her parents were Henry Glick and Eva Swander . Stephen died 12 Feb 1880, age 67. Annie died 11 Jun 1885, age 71. They were buried HodgeCemetery, Bloomfield Twp, Logan Co OH.42

They probably had land in the southeast quarter of Section 25, Bloomfield Twp, Logan Co OH, on or near Rum Creek. In 1869, H Glick is shown on Section 17, which adjoins Section 8 where Stephen's father had land. We don't know if H Glick could be Annie's brother Henry, who married Ann Catharine Shull 29 Nov 1849 Logan Co OH. So many names on the maps appear to be affiliated with our families.

THE HODGE CEMETERY64 -- On 16 May 2002 we visited and found the gravestone of Stephen and Annie! Located on the west side of Twp Road 23, approximately ½ mile south of Co Rd 59, the cemetery is comparatively small and has no evidence of a church or other buildings nearby. The grass had been mowed recently, and the cemetery seemed well kept, with some signs of neglect but not much apparent vandalism. Unfortunately, the day was rainy and overcast and we couldn't get a photograph.

"Our" stone needs some attention. Of beautiful pink granite, the roughly square lower part, with raised lettering, seemed in perfect shape, except that it had been heaved upward at an angle by nearby tree roots. The top part also appeared in perfect condition, except that it had fallen, or been knocked, off and was lying on the ground. It's a round column, perhaps four feet long, tapering toward the conical top. We think it might be possible to reset the stone, but have decided against it, partly due to cost but mostly due to our feeling that it, the tallest in the cemetery, would be a very attractive target for vandals.

a) Henry Lyman10 Cole was born 3 Nov 1835. He died 9 Mar 1841, age 5 years, 4 months, and 6 days, buried Hodge Cemetery.42 In May 2002 his stone was out of place.

b) Shadrach Alson10 Cole, usually known as Alson, was born 7 Jun 1837. He married Elizabeth M Rairdon -- see page 6b-46.

SHADRACH ALSON COLE (b 1837) and ELIZABETH M RAIRDON (b 1838)from page 6b-44

Alson's parents were Stephen Alson Cole and Anna Magdalene GlickElizabeth's parents are not known to us

b) Shadrach Alson10 Cole,16,18 usually known as Alson, was born 7 Jun 1837 DeGraff, Logan Co OH. He married Elizabeth M Rairdon 20 Nov 1866 Logan Co;18,19 no children. She was born 24 Jan 1838. We haven't identified her parents, although there were several Rairdon families in the area.

She died 19 May 1902, age 64. He died 13 Jan 1913 Logan Co, age 75. They were buried GreenwoodCemetery, DeGraff.

Alson was the older brother of BFE's great-grandfather John Wesley Cole, and she remembers some of Alson's pictures and books. She was always fascinated by his monogram. He first made a cursive capital "S", then joined the bottom of a cursive capital "C" to it (in other words, the tall narrow loop at the top served both letters), then drew a crossbar between the lower parts of the "S" and the "C" in order to make the "A". It really looked very nice.

Alson and Elizabeth were married at the residence of her father in DeGraff, by Rev R D Oldfield.37

In Elizabeth's will of 22 Apr 1902, she left their farm (boundaries described in detail) to her husband for his lifetime, but wanted it to go to her sister, Rosa Hanks, after her husband's death, because the farm had belonged to her parents. Elizabeth signed by mark (literacy was not universal for women even in 1902).

Alson had only a small property himself, in DeGraff, and it had to be sold to pay his debts after he died. Thedocuments related to this have been a marvelous source of information on the family.

CIVIL WAR SERVICE -- He was in the 96th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enrolled in Co I atBloomcentre 15 Aug 1862, for three years. He mustered in 23 Aug 1862 Delaware OH. He was absent from Julythrough October 1863, sent to hospital at Vicksburg MS 13 Aug 1863 and was disabled 15 Aug 1863 at Vicksburg MS, by disease of respiratory organs, chronic diarrhea, disease of his stomach and rectum.

In the Battle of Sabine's Cross Roads in LA, he received a gunshot wound of his left hand 8 Apr 1864. On 18 Nov 1864 he was paid a $25 bounty (with $75 due) and transferred to Co B, evidently as part of a consolidation. He was mustered out Mobile AL 7 Jul 1865.36

He was described as 5'11½" tall, light complexion, grey eyes, sandy hair. The picture we have of him was taken in Baton Rouge LA in 1865, presumably after the end of the war.

He applied for a pension 2 May 1890. It was granted, although possibly not until 1907, based on his being almost totally disabled, unable to do any manual labor, with constant throat clearing and constant diarrhea.

THE GREENWOOD CEMETERY -- In June 1998 we visited the Greenwood Cemetery in DeGraff OH, and werepleased to find a plot with a rather elaborate monument with "Cole" on both sides in large letters. One small corner marker showed "139 SAC" and we found two other corners with only the number. Tombstones for S Alson Cole and Elizabeth M Cole gave birth and death dates as we show them above.

There is space, but no stones, for two more graves, and we believe Alson's brother John Wesley Cole and his wife Annie Rebecca Badger, page 6b-49, are buried there. In May 2002 the sexton agreed there are two unmarked graves in the plot. We think the two brothers must have purchased the plot jointly and erected the monument. We think John arranged for the stones for Alson and Elizabeth, but that Annie was unable to do so for him and no one did so for her. The extremely minimal cemetery records only show Alson's name. John's death certificate indicates a funeral home no longer in existence, and the present funeral home's records for that time have been lost. We would like to place a stone for John and Annie, but so far have been unsuccesful in finding appropriate documentartion.

CLARINDA MARGARET COLE (b 1839) and WILLIAM L HILL (b 1835)and their descendants

from page 6b-44Clarinda's parents were Stephen Alson Cole and Anna Magdalene Glick

William's parents are not known to us

c) Clarinda Margaret10 “Maggie” Cole, born 30 Jan 1839, married William L Hill 20 Nov 1859; at least tenchildren. In 1860 he was a farmer and they were living Logansville Rd, Pleasant Twp, Logan Co OH. With them was Barbara Hill, age 66, presumably his mother, and Eliza Jane Hill, age 22, perhaps his sister. Maggie died Sep 1872 Carrollton MO, age about 34. Born 6 Jun 1835, William died 3 Jul 1880, age 45.

Maggie signed Annie Rebecca Badger's remembrance book, page 6b-50. We originally thought her name was Chlorinda, because ECF spelled it that way, but "Clarinda" was in the documents we found in May 2002.

We note that Maggie and William had ten children in less than 14 years, a large but not impossible number. We believe Maggie married, secondly, J W Strayer, presumably not long after the birth of William M Hill in Apr 1871. We assume she and William had divorced, but it's possible our information is incorrect.

The children and grandchildren below are shown as next of kin in the 1913 petition to sell Alson Cole's real estate, and they are the only people named Hill who could have been his next of kin. We have a birthdate for only one of them, and all the men are named before the women, so the birth order below is assuredly incorrect.

i) Henry A11 Hill married Ellen S [Hill]; children: Vincent; Edith (married Strayer Long); Herschell; Lelia;possibly one more daughter. Henry signed the remembrance book 27 Aug 1886 living Lincoln NE.

ii) John L11 Hill married Jennie Earl [Hill]; daughter Annabel.iii) William M11 Hill, born 18 Apr 1871 Pleasant Twp, Logan Co OH,60 married Clara Staley; no children.iv) Oron (Orin?) A11 Hill married Nellie [Hill]; no children.v) Joseph E11 Hill married Linna W [Hill]; daughter Catherine and a son.vi) Franklin T11 “Frank” Hill, married Nora R [Hill]; two children: Gerald and Margaret.vii) Perry Anderson11 Hill, usually known as Anderson, married Tabitha [Hill]; three children. She signed

the remembrance book as Tabitha O Hill, a cousin in Quincy OH.

(a) Lena A12 Hill married Lee William Badger; two children. His parents were Walter Ambrose Badger (1851-1937) and Emma Annabelle Pool (1857-1914).

When Lena signed the remembrance book, she was living in Quincy OH. Earlier we weren't surewhether her name might actually be Laura, but we found her signature "Lena" on the 1913 petition.

In 1916, Lena, Lee, and their children moved to Texas with Lee's father.Walter Ambrose Badger was a brother of Annie Rebecca Badger, who married John Wesley Cole,

page 6b-49. This means that Lena is BFE's second cousin, once removed, and Lee is her first cousin, twice removed, but Lena and Lee are not cousins of each other.

-- See Section 6c for some information about the BADGER family --

(i) Elizabeth Miriam13 Badger married F T Robidoux; daughter Diane Elaine.(ii) Dr William13 Badger married Stella Perry; son Dr Lee William II married Junye Real;

three sons, Lee William III, Michael and John.(b) Gladys M12 Hill married (--?--) Nickolls; daughter Hulda Ruth.(c) Clarinda E12 Hill married Raymond Miller; son Perry Anderson and two daughters.

viii) Anna B11 Hill married Walter Kerns; son Roy had daughters Ruth and Jeane. ix) Emma11 Hill married William H Kemper; two sons.x) Rosalie11 Hill married Alpha R Brinser; no children. Rev 08/98, 07/01, 06/02, 11/02, 03/03

MARY ANN COLE (b 1841) and HENRY R RAIRDON and their descendantsfrom page 6b-44

Mary Ann's parents were Stephen Alson Cole and Anna Magdalene GlickHenry's parents and birthdate are not known to us

d) Mary Ann10 Cole, born 1841 near DeGraff, Logan Co OH, married Henry R (or R H) Rairdon 18 (or 19) Apr 1866; at least three children. She died between 9 Feb 1880 (date of her father's will) and 11 Apr 1881 (date of probate of her father's will), age about 40.

Henry, whose middle name may have been Richard, may have been a brother of William Rairdon, who married Annie Rebecca Badger's sister Cornelia (Section 6c). We don't know whether Elizabeth Rairdon, who married Mary Ann's brother Shadrach Alson, page 6b-46, was Henry's and/or William's sister. There were several Rairdon families in the area in the time period. Information is available, but we have not followed it because it's collateral for us.

When we visited the Greenwood Cemetery, we found several Rairdon tombstones, which may be for members of Henry's family. We thought it especially sad that two young men, we believe to be brothers, were killed or otherwise died, in the war only a short time apart. James N died 27 Jun 1864, age 20, and John S died Jul 1864, age 22. They were members of the same unit as Shadrach Alson Cole, so he surely knew them.

In addition to the children listed below, Mary Ann and Henry may have had two more sons, both bornBloomfield, Logan Co OH. They are not shown in the 1913 petition but could have died by then:

Norman W Rairdon, born 6 Dec 1867; and Henry D Rairdon, born Aug 1870.

i) Emma A11 Rairdon, born 20 Dec 1872 Bloomfield Twp, Logan Co OH, married (--?--) Lockhart; son Hugh.

Emma and her brothers Wilbur and Lester are shown as "children" in the 1881 application for probate of their grandfather Stephen's will.

ii) Wilbur H11 Rairdon, born about 1868 (age 52 in 1920 census), married Lillian D [Rairdon]. She was born about 1878 (age 42 in 1920). He was an automobile agent and in 1920 they were living New Bremen, Auglaize Co OH.

iii) H(?) Lester11 Rairdon, born before 1881, married Nell Smith; son Smith Rairdon, who married (--?--) Myers.

JOHN WESLEY COLE (b 1843) and ANNIE REBECCA BADGER (b 1849) and their descendantsfrom page 6b-44

John Wesley's parents were Stephen Cole and Anna Magdalene GlickAnnie Rebecca's parents were John Calvin Badger and Eliza Jane Douglass

e) John Wesley 10 Cole ,16,20 born 10 May 1843 Bloomfield Twp, Logan Co OH, married Annie Rebecca Badger 29 Jul 1869 Fort Madison, Lee Co IA;16 two children. She was born 7 Jan 1849 Bellefontaine, Logan Co. Herparents were John Calvin Badger and Eliza Jane Douglass .

John died 7:30 Friday morning 14 Sep 1923 at home in DeGraff, Logan Co, age 80,21 buried 16 Sep 1923Greenwood Cemetery, DeGraff. Annie Rebecca died 5 Apr 1926 DeGraff, age 77.

When John was 17 or so, he went to Sidney OH to work. When he returned to his parents' home on Rum Creek,Bellefontaine OH, he was playing the violin and pleased with it. In those days they called the violin a "fiddle" and it was used at dances. The church then disapproved of dances. His parents were hurt that their beloved son used "an instrument of the devil." So he gave it up. He didn't want to do anything wrong.

Although notes of his daughter ECF (Edith Cole Fisher) don't mention military service, his obituary indicates that he was a Civil War veteran. We've been searching for confirmation of this, and thought we had found evidence thathe was in Co C, 43rd Ohio Infantry. Now we think that the information we found may have referred to another John W Cole. Thus, this remains an area that a future researcher could explore.

He had a large hardware store in Carrollton, Carroll Co MO (about 60 miles east of Kansas City MO), which catered to farmers in several nearby counties. He was a church man, who liked to help young men get started in life(Wesley Poland, Aunt Jennie's husband, was one of them). At one point, John was head of Knights of Pythias. In 1882, John and Annie moved to Nebraska, where in the 1900 census they are shown in Lincoln NE. In 1902 theyreturned to Logan Co OH to live in DeGraff.77

ECF said he was very tall, but never weighed more than 135 lbs. He never had a doctor called for him until his last sickness, which was off and on for four years. He was a walker, fond of music, reading and church going. He liked to do things for people. ECF said he was a wonderful man, and that it was an honor to have known and loved him. When John died, his wife and daughter were with him. His funeral was to be 16 Sep 1923 at the Methodist Episopal Church in DeGraff.33

John wrote at least two poems addressed to Annie Rebecca. She also wrote poetry, some of it in prayer form. We've included three of their poems on the last pages of this section.

On 21 Jun 1998 we visited the Greenwood Cemetery just north of DeGraff OH, and were pleased to find tombstones for several of our relatives. It's a very pretty place, and its name suits it exactly. We wished we had had more time to explore the area but, after our visit, we felt a little more acquainted with some of the family we know so little about. See page 6b-30 for more on the cemetery and why we think we found the graves of John and Annie Rebecca.

-- ANNIE REBECCA BADGER'S "REMEMBRANCE BOOK" --

Annie Rebecca Badger married John Wesley Cole in 1869 and became the mother of Edith Avanelle Cole Fisher (ECF).

For Christmas 1866, Annie Rebecca received an album in which she kept remembrances. The book, in possession (1992) of cousin Edith Duke Kautsky, is signed by many of her relatives and friends.

We've greatly enjoyed identifying the relatives who signed Annie Rebecca's book, and these are noted throughout this Section 6b.

There are, however, several other relatives who signed the rememberance book, so far not yet identified specifically by us. These include cousins Sidney Cole, Emma Pool Turner (10 Dec 1871), A M Glick, and P H Hill, and a nephew, L H Cole (Rising, Butler Co NE). Maybe someday we will find them also.

Note: Annie Rebecca's book has also been one of our sources for information in Section 6c about the Douglass and Badger families.

Perry was well known in Bellefontaine and had a store which, according to an 1890 photograph (printed in a newspaper much later), advertised over its door "Cole's Store. Cloak and Drygoods, Goods Sold at Only Ten Per Cent Profit". He, Laura and Eliza are in the photograph.

In Section 5 of the Bellefontaine Cemetery, which we visited May 2002, there is a large stone with “Cole-Rairdon" on it in large letters. In small letters, a total of five burials are indicated, including Perry, Laura Jane, their daughter Ivaloo, her husband Omer, and "J E Allen 1867-1956".

We think J E Allen may have been a brother or uncle of Laura's. On the 1920 census, James Allen, age 52, is shown as a laborer in a Logan Co flour mill, boarding in Bellefontaine with a family named Culp.

i) Edith Ivaloo11 Cole, usually known as Ivaloo or Iva, was born 1874. She married Omer A Rairdon; at least one child. Omer was born 1872. In 1920 they were living Bellefontaine. She died 1948, age about 74. He died 1959, age about 87. They were buried Bellefontaine Cemetery.42

(a) Stanley C12 Rairdon was born about 1896 (age 24 in 1920 census).

ii) an unnamed infant son died 26 Jul 1876, buried Hodge Cemetery.

JOSEPH WILSON COLE (b 1848) and LUCY FOULK (b 1848) and their descendantsfrom page 6b-44

Joseph Wilson's parents were Stephen Alson Cole and Anna Magdalene GlickLucy's parents were George Foulk and Sarah [Foulk]

g) Joseph Wilson10 Cole, usually known as Wilson, was born 24 Apr 1848. He married Lucy Foulk 30 Jan 1868; at least four children. She was born 24 Apr 1848, Pleasant Twp, Logan Co OH.76 Her parents were George and Sarah Foulk (Fulk?). George left a bequest to Lucy's daughter Alice Blanche.

Wilson died 26 Jan 1912,35 Bellefontaine, Logan Co, age 63. In 1923 Lucy was living Bellefontaine.33

She died there 7 Mar 1942, Harmon Home, Bellefontaine,76 age 93, buried Bellefontaine Cemetery.

We don't know the birthdates of all Wilson and Lucy's children, so the order below is probably not entirely correct. The Application for Letters of Administration of Joseph Wilson's estate, dated 24 Feb 1912, is our source for some of the information on the children. The document says he left money in banks and notes of not over $900.00, and real estate worth not over $12,500.00, and had no indebtedness. The lastpayment to the heirs, in final settlement of the estate, was made 21 Aug 1917 in the amount of $177.85.

George Fulk is shown as age 76, with wife Sarah age 77, in the 1860 census of Pleasant Twp, Logan Co.In the next two houses are families of George and Lucy Fulk, and Adam and Catharine Fulk, presumably sons and daughters-in-law of George and Sarah.

i) Florence11 Cole, born 8 Jan 1869,34 married W Grant Schultz after 1892. She signed Annie Rebecca'sremembrance book 27 Aug 1892, Bloomentine OH. In 1912 and 1942 she was living near DeGraff, Logan Co OH.35 She died before 1954.

Two children: Fleeta Ardra and George Wilson.

ii) Anna Estella11 “Stella” Cole, born 17 Mar 1870 Bloomfield Twp, Logan Co OH,34 married William Edward Strayer -- see Section 6c.

iii) Lora11 Cole, born about 1873 (age 7 in 1880), married Frank Kreglow, probably Dec 1901. His brother Grover married Lora's sister Alice Blanche. Frank died 11 Mar 1902.

An extract of a 7 Jan 1902 newspaper account tells of the marriage "a short time ago" of Lora Cole of Rum Creek to Frank Kreglow of Pleasant Twp. Another extract, from the same newspaper, dated Friday 14 Mar 1902, reports that Frank was injured by the falling of a tree "some weeks since" and that he died the previous Tuesday and was buried Thursday. We don't know Lora's birthdate or anything elseabout her, and she isn't shown in any of the documents relating to her father's estate, so she must have died before 1912.

iv) Omer Monroe11 Cole, usually known as Monroe, was born 12 Apr 1876. He married Jessie E Cloud(Clour?);77 at least two children. She was born 24 Mar 1881. In 1912 and 1920, Monroe was a farmer inBellefontaine, Logan Co OH,35 in 1923 he was in DeGraff, Logan Co,33 and in 1942 in Columbus OH. He died 20 Sep 1954, age 78, buried Greenwood Cemetery.64,76,77 Jessie died 28 May 1970, age 89.

(a) Beatrice12 Cole was born about 1911. At the time of her father's death, she was married to Frank Sager of Columbus OH.

(b) Omer Monroe12 “Jim” Cole Jr was born 12 Sep 1920. He was a WWII veteran and was employed by the F & R Lazarus Co. In 1954 he was living in CA. He married Geraldine [Cole].Jim died Feb 1980, age 59, Columbus OH, buried Union Cemetery, Columbus.

Three children: Jonda (married John Pote of Windsor CA); Jaclyn (married Terry Hoffmanof Columbus OH); and Linda (married William DeWitt of Columbus).76

v) Rose11 Cole married Emery Y Garling after 1903.32 In 1912 she was living near Lewistown OH,35 and in 1942 Bloom Center OH.

Two children: Geraldine and Emmerson.

vi) George S11 Cole, born about 1881 (age 39 in 1920), married Evalyn S Skinner. She was born about 1888 (age 32 in 1920). He was administrator of his father's estate 1912-1918. In 1912, 1942 and 1954

he was living Cleveland OH.35 Two children: Velma, born about 1912 (age 8 in 1920); and Betty, born about 1917 (age 2¾ in 1920).

In the 1920 census, John J Skinner, age 21, is shown as George Cole's brother-in-law, in the household of George and Evalyn on Ashbury St in Cleveland City OH.

vii) Alice Blanche11 Cole, probably usually known as Blanche, was born about 1886 Bloom Center OH (age 33 in 1920). She married Grover C Kreglow 4 Jan 1905 Rum Creek United Methodist Church,Logan Co OH. He was born about 1884 (age 36 in 1920). He was a professor at Ohio State University and at Ohio Wesleyan University. In 1912 they were living Ada OH,35 where he taught at Ohio NorthernUniversity. In 1920 they were living Logansville village, Logan Co, where he was in general farming. In 1954 they were near Quincy OH. He died 26 Oct 1960, age about 76. She died 10 Feb 1980, Green Hills Center, Bellefontaine, Logan Co OH, age about 94, buried Greenwood Cemetery, DeGraff, Logan Co.76

Four children: James Julius (born about 1907, lived Bellevue in 1980); Esther Lenore (born about1909, married R J Wakefield, living Dallas TX in 1980); Robert C (born about 1914, living DeGraff in 1980); and Isabel (born after 1920, married Arthur A Lewis, living Bellefontaine in 1980).

An interesting item was a document we found in the Logan Co library, dated 15 Nov 1900, making Blanche's father her guardian. She was 14 years old, and stated that he was her choice. She had received a bequest of $100.00 from her grandfather George Foulk, and the guardianship was necessary because she was a minor. The guardianship ceased in 1904, when she became eighteen. Her bequest had been invested and had earned $24.00 interest, but there were a few expenses, so in 1904 she received $117.00.

viii) Hazel11 Cole married Clifford Staley. In 1912 she was living near DeGraff, Logan Co OH.35 In 1942 and 1954 she was living Sidney, Shelby Co OH.

HARMON D COLE (b 1853) and MARY ELIZA “MOLLIE” FREDERICK (b 1858)and their descendants

from page 6b-44Harmon's parents were Stephen Alson Cole and Anne Magdalene Glick

Mollie's parents were Martin Frederick and Ophelia Prill

i) Harmon D10 Cole,21 born 21 Jul 1853 Bloomfield Twp, Logan Co OH, married Mary Eliza "Mollie" Frederick 12 Sep 1874 Jackson Twp, Shelby Co OH; at least four children. She was born 25 Mar 1858 near Dayton, Montgomery Co OH. Her parents were Martin Frederick and Ophelia Prill. Mollie died 22 Apr 1904, age 46, buried Glen Cemetery, Port Jefferson, Shelby Co OH.42

Harmon died 6 Feb 1916,72 age 62, buried beside Mollie.Harmon worked on his father's 500 acre farm, and he and Mollie lived there until Aug 1879,

when they moved to the 40 acres of land Harmon would later inherit from his father, in Bloomfield Twp, not far from Maplewood, Shelby Co OH.58 Harmon started building their house in 1877. Later he added 40 more acres.

Earlier we thought Mollie probably died sometime between the births of the second and third children, because of the unusual number of years between those children, but now know she was mother of all four.32

i) Iva11 Cole, probably born about 1880, married Joseph Edwards of St Louis MO.58

Iva was on the roll of honor for the Bellefontaine public schools in the 1886-1887 school year. She also attended school in Jackson Center, Anna, and Lebanon OH (where she spent two years in the normal school (teacher's college)). She taught school for four years.

In 1930 she was probably the widow Iva E Edwards, age 50, who was keeper of a rooming house in St Louis.

ii) Flossie O11 Cole, born about 1885, married Orlando C Scherer a few days before 24 Nov 190332

Logan Co OH. He was born about 1884. In 1920 he was a farmer on Boundary Road, Bloomfield Twp, Logan Co. He died 1967, age about 83. She died 1970, age about 85. They were buried Glen Cemetery.42

Two children: Helen A, born about 1907, and William O, below. Flossie graduated from public schools and passed the "Boxwell examination" with the Class

of 1901. According to an article in the Ohio Genealogical Society Quarterly, March 2003, the Boxwell examination, which later became known as the Patterson examination, required a full day at the county seat. Those passing were allowed to enter high school, and their tuition was paid by the township or county.

(a) William O (Orlando?)12 Scherer was born 5 Nov 1909 or 1910. He married Jewell J [Sherer]. She was born 3 Nov 1907. He died 14 Apr 1996, age 86. She died 1 Aug 1998, age 90. They were buried Glen Cemetery.

His gravestone has 5 Nov 1909 - 14 Apr 1996; a metal placque in the ground nearby has 5 Nov 1910 - 14 Apr 1996. In the 1920 census he is shown as 10 years old.

iii) Harold C11 Cole was born 28 Apr 1894. In 1930 he was single, a car salesman, living Sidney, Shelby Co.

iv) Olive Genevieve11 Cole was born 19 Oct 1896.

MY PRAYERby Annie Badger Cole, DeGraff OH

O Lord Jesus I am weak, but let me come to Thee And claim the cleansing of thy blood so freely shed for me.My blessed Master and my Lord, to whom then shall I go, If from thy presence, Judas-like, I wander to and fro?Oh no. I can not bear the thought. I can not from Thee stray. Thou hast the words of endless life. I know no other way.

I come to Thee with contrite heart. O take this heart of mine. Give me the sanction of Thy love and make me wholly Thine.Keep me from temptation's power and give me grace to say, Thy will and Thine alone be done. O guide my steps each day. This boon I ask, dear Lord, I plead. O keep me near to Thee And make me feel Thy precious blood was freely shed for me.

For me, for me! Ah glorious thought! What more can mortals ask Than full bestowment of Thy love and in Thy sunshine bask?O Lord, Thou knowest all our hearts, then search me well and give Assurance of Thy perfect love and teach me how to live,To grow in grace and reach the goal we're striving for each day And keep me humble in Thy sight to walk the narrow way.

Teach us to number all our days and thus our hearts apply To learn to walk in wisdom's ways with wisdom from on high. This is my prayer, dear Lord. Keep me and also mine And thus to Thee all praise ascribe, for Christ's sake, Thy son divine. Amen.

We found the poem below, in beautiful penmanship, on a folded paper with an embossed lacy border.

A DREAM

I sit beside a dimpled streamAnd as I sit I sleep and dreamAnd in my dreams thy face I seeBut who I am is not to thee

I see a pair of tender blue eyesThat fills me with sweet surpriseAnd in those eyes sweet thoughts I seeBut what about is nought to thee

And thus beside the tuneful streamI sit and sleep a sleeping dreamAnd still within that dream I seeA face I love, 'tis nought but thee,

In beautiful penmanship, this is by John Wesley Cole to Miss Annie Rebecca Badger

Where the stream its sparkling waters Ripple softly byWhere the happy joyous songsters Raise their notes on highWhere sweet flowers ---- with dew drops Lured the busy bee,Dwelt a fair and lovely maiden,

Darling Annie B.

Hair the softest, brightest golden Eyes of heavenly blueCheeks that ----- the bloom of roses Teeth of pearly hueWith a smile of gentle sweetness Beautiful to seeWon the love of all who knew her,

Darling Annie B.

When fair spring with gentle finger Broke her icy chainUshering in, with joy and gladness, Flora's blooming trainGayly through the fields and meadows Fresh and fancy freeWarbling songs of sweetest music,

Roamed fair Annie B.

Gliding over the silver water With the moon aboveAnnie felt the touch of Cupid There she learned to loveFor a knight of noble bearing From beyond the sea---- and sought to win fair Annie,

Win fair Annie B.

Spoke the knight, in tones of richness, "Will you go with meTo my land of storied beauty Far beyond the sea?If you answer yes, sweet Annie, I shall happy be.Tell me truly, may I call you

My dear Annie B.?"

When the rose and fragrant lily Summer blossoms bore,Annie through the shady woodland Roamed alone no more,For when autumn's gold and scarlet Wood and forest dyed,She had promised, promised softly,

She would be a bride.

THE MAKING OF DRESSES-- As remembered about 1953 by Edith Cole Fisher (ECF) --

Grandma Eliza Douglas Badger was the oldest of her family. At one time her sisters took turns bringing their children and much cloth to Eliza's home to spend the day. Eliza would cut out and fit garments for them to take home and finish. My mother could copy any style dress and have it fit.

The dresses used to be very elaborate. The sleeves had to fit without a wrinkle or gather. She could take her chart and draft a pattern, after carefully measuring the one to whom the dress would belong. She could make the front of the skirt to look like one picture in a fashion book, and the back like another (if they wished it that way).

Same with the waist, basque they called it. The dresses were elaborately trimmed, even the skirts. That was before my day. Sometimes I had some trimming on skirt, a wide self colored velvet band across bottom of skirt, or one or more rows of self colored ribbon around skirt.

After a dress looked finished, there was much work inside! The darts in front of waist and other seams were cut open and pressed flat. The dresses were all lined with perkeline (I think that is its name). The inside seams in waist in front had covered whalebone fastened with pretty colored silk embroidery thread. The edges of the seames were overcast with same thread. No raw edges showed. The perkeline and dress goods edges were turned inside.

The skirt also was lined from bottom up for quite a distance with stiff crinoline. The edge of skirt was faced (instead of hemming). At last a "dust ruffle", a narrow full pleating of cloth, was sewed on the edge. The skirts were long, also the sleeves.
