– The state-of-the-art of the advanced immersive visual interfaces and information visualization systems for design.

– Hardware and software advances associated with those immersive systems

– Relevant work in perceptual psychology to address the human-computer interface issues.

• Outcome:– have knowledge of hardware and software for virtual design space– be familiar with the variety of techniques and methods for designing in

virtual space– have experience designing and running a experimental study and

performing data– be familiar with research issues in immersive design spaces– have experience reading research papers and identifying the

contribution of those papers

Description of the course

• This course discusses the state-of-the-art of the advanced immersive visual interfaces and information visualization systems that have been applied and can be potentially applied in design. Hardware and software advances associated with those immersive systems will be extensively discussed. Relevant work in perceptual psychology will also be discussed to address the human-computer interface issues.

Introduction

• As interactive technology becomes immersive, multimodal, and ubiquitous, the emphasis in interaction design shifts to facilitating perceptual cognition and embodied interaction

Major concepts in this unit

• Immersive digital environment is an artificial, interactive, computer-created scene or "world" within which a user can immerse themselves.

• Multimodal interaction provides the user with multiple modes of interfacing with a system beyond the traditional input/output (e.g., mice and keyboard).

• Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) integrates computation into the environment, rather than having computers which are distinct objects.

• Purpose of technology: Understanding, thinking, learning, communication & experience, etc.

• Placement: Invisible, immersive, tangible, virtual.
