Book Fair is Coming

We recognize that birthdays are very important celebrations. Because, we have students with life threatening allergies, we ask that you not send food (e.g. cake, chocolate, candies, and cookies) to the school. If you would like your child’s birthday acknowledged, you can send a small token to share with the class (e.g., pencil and eraser set, stickers). Anything brought in for birthdays must be dropped off at the office not with the classroom educators.

Reminder to Parents-Birthday Celebrations

Karate Kids Club

We are excited to announce that the Karate Kids program will be coming back to Derry West Village P.S. in September. This 30 minute class will run during Tuesday’s nutrition break in the school gymnasium. It combines fun fitness activity, character education lessons and non-contact basic martial arts movements. The class is designed to build self-confidence, self-discipline, and fitness levels in a non-competitive environment. Offered to grades 1-4, the program will run once a week on every Tuesday starting on September 21st for 16 classes. Enrolment flyers containing full details will be distributed to the students on Sept 14th. This is a popular program that is currently running in over 85 schools across Ontario. You are invited to visit the website for more detailed information at www.karatekids.ca or call 416-482-8198.

Ideas for Summer

Thank you A heartfelt thank you to all our Derry West Village Public School families who supported our first-ever annual Spring Fair on Saturday, May 13

th.

The event was an enormous success and the feedback from the students, families, friends and community members was extremely positive. But the Spring Fair couldn’t have occurred without the endless hours and hard work of a small but strong group of families that collaborated and truly demonstrated teamwork and dedication in planning our special day. In addition to our School Council Spring Fair planning team, we would like to thank the 40 student volunteers from Mississauga Secondary School and David Leeder Middle School. These student volunteers planned and worked very hard to provide assistance in every area of the event.

Finally, a very special thank you to Aadil Aderbehman, our School Council Chair and Sangita Iyer who effectively took the lead and organized every detail to provide this fun-filled day for everyone. This was a 2-year dream that came true on May 13

th!

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the following community members and companies for their generous donations: Aujla family and friends, Coffee Culture, Magcan Plastic, Subway, Sahresh Akbar, Food Basics, Dollarama, Vinay Pandurangi, Aftab Asam, No Frills, Party City and Aadil & Ayesha Aderbehman.

Early Literacy

May Family Activities

Week 1

Play the Name Game. Try this game while cooking together. Show your child a mixing bowl and ask:

“What do we call this?”

“What shape is the bowl?”

“What colour is the bowl?”

Any utensil or item in the kitchen can be used. Do the same thing while taking a walk, shopping, making the bed, or having a bath.

Week 2

Chant favourite poems and rhymes over and over together.

E.g., “The wheels on the bus go round and round,

round and round, round and round.

The wheels on the bus go round and round,

all through the town.”

Week 3

Read pattern books that are easily remembered (Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin) and suggest that your child join in when the pattern is

repeated.

Week 4

Talk about the weather and encourage discussion – e.g., “It is raining and cool out today; what should we wear?” “Do we need an umbrella?”

Readinga gift that lasts a lifetime

“By developing muscles in the hands and fingers, children increase their strength and ability to handle and control objects. Hand skills and other

pre-writing skills will prepare your child for writing.” (CAOT, 2012)

Ten Fingers

I have ten fingers (hold up both hands, fingers spread)

And they all belong to me (point to self)

I can make them do things – Would you like to see?

I can shut them tight (make fists)

I can open them wide (open hands)

I can put them together (place palms together)

I can make them all hide (put hands behind back)

I can make them jump high (hands over head)

I can make them go low (touch floor)

I can fold them up quietly (fold hands in lap)

And hold them just so.

Ideas for parents:

· Provide an area with materials to practice drawing and writing. Use crayons, pens, pencils, markers, pastels and chalk for drawing and writing.

· Provide materials that help to develop the small muscles in the hand such as clothespins, play dough, fasteners, bottles with lids that can be

opened and closed, beads for stringing, scissors, and books to practice turning the pages.

· Make a book with your child using old photographs and pictures. Talk about what the pictures are about and then write down what was said.

· Scribbling is early writing – encourage their efforts.

R - Be a role model to your child E - Enjoy reading together A - Allow your child to choose their books D - Read daily
