Dermot Power
Dermot Power is an Irish born concept artist who has worked on several big
projects in both post and pre production. Power’s states his career took off in
1989-1990 when he was hired by Virgin Games to create cover art for their
video games.
After this big jump in his career he was hired to create cover art and comic strips for British weekly anthology 2000 AD, on both ‘Judge Dredd’ and ‘Slaine’.
In 1997 the director of that project then commissioned Power’s to create character designs for the Hallmark mini TV series ‘Merlin’. He then carried on
working for Hallmark as a concept artist on productions such as ‘Alice in
Wonderland’, ‘Arabian nights’ and ‘Jason and the Argonauts’.
In 1999 Power’s began to work as part of the concept design team on ‘Star
Wars episode II, Attack of the clones’. He spent the next year of his career
working with fellow concept designer Iain McCaig and Trisha Briggar on
characters and costumes.
Power’s next career move was being hired to be part of the production
design team with designer Stuart Craig for several of the ‘Harry Potter’ movies at Leavesden Studios.
Power’s portfolio of work extended even further when he began to work on
both ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’ before
moving to San Francisco to work on the motion capture movies ‘Beowulf’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’.
Power’s then began to work on pieces for both Dreamworks and 2K Games,
including ‘Megamind’, ‘Guardians of Children’ and ‘Bioshock 2’ before
working on the ‘Pixar’ Movie, ‘John Carter’.
It would seem one of Power’s biggest achievements was yet to come as in
2009 he was hired by Tim Burton work on post production visuals, camera art and marketing illustrations for Burton’s movie ‘Alice in Wonderland’.
Power’s has had an interesting and vibrant career spanning several different
franchises and styles and worked in many different techniques, he continues
to work free lance to this day.
