• Teaching and technical staff of the of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Occupational Safety and Health, Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad prepared the survey

• Survey’s goal :• to present current state of the environmental protection

sector in Serbia • to show country’s future needs regard environmental

protection

Serbian Environmental Projects overview

Page 6: DEREL TEMPUS 511001-2010 DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCES ENGINEERING LEARNING

• Current Environmental projects are in compliance with National Programs and Strategies

• Mostly projects are under the patronage/supervision of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of Republic of Serbia and designated national bodies

• Some of the projects are funded and sponsored by EU and foreign organizations

Page 7: DEREL TEMPUS 511001-2010 DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCES ENGINEERING LEARNING

• Serbian Strategy and Action plan for Environmental Capacity Development are presented in several National Programs and Strategies• National Programs and Strategies are following current EU trends in environmental protection as well as EU Directives in the same area• Future Projects in the area environmental protection will focus on strengthen the capacities regarding soil, water, air protection as well as further implementation projects regarding Climate Changes

Page 8: DEREL TEMPUS 511001-2010 DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCES ENGINEERING LEARNING

• National Environmental Protection Program is defined for the period 2010-2019, sets national objectives in the area of environmental protection

• National Sustainable Development Strategy for the period 2009 – 2017

• National Waste Management Strategy 2010-2019• GeolISS, POPs Project

• Issues of climate change and land degradation

• Estimated total annual damage, due to air contamination, including the emission of GHG in Republic of Serbia is in the range from 447,2 million € and 1.370,1 million €, which represent 1,8% - 5,5% of GDP.

Waste water

• Data from state statistic show that 35.03% of households is under public sewage network.

• From total amount of municipal waste water, about 87% are discharged without any treatment in the environment.

• The largest cities in the country, Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis, directly discharge waste waters in the recipients.

• Some of the existing facilities are neglected, and many provide only primary (mechanical) treatment, while most of them do not work continuously.

• Pollution from diffuse sources causes more than 50% of water pollution (RZS 2008).

• Management of contaminated sites in Serbia is not institutionalized

• No specific methodology for defining contaminated sites in Serbia

• Largest number of registered sources of localized soil pollution is related to municipal waste disposal sites, oil extraction and storage sites, industrial and commercial sites.

• Erosion processes (of various degrees) affect up to 80% of agricultural soil in Serbia.

CONCLUSION

Page 16: DEREL TEMPUS 511001-2010 DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCES ENGINEERING LEARNING

• Survey identified necessity of improvements in the area of environmental protection (legal framework, institutional capacities, lack of methodologies, public awareness) as well as necessary support to Serbia’s accession to European Union in the area of environmental protection

• Focus is on water and waste water management and renewable energy sources

• Thus, increasing the public awareness and educational capacities will strengthen capabilities and capacities to deal with growing environmental issues locally and globally
