MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Did you know that in the month of March in 1790 the first United States Census took place? Per the United States Census Bureau, Thomas Jefferson then serving as Secretary of State, directed marshals to take a census in the original 13 states, plus the districts of Kentucky, Maine and Vermont, and the Southwest Territory now Tennessee. According to historians George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were not confident in the final count. Think about the challenges of collecting such data and performing Data Analytics without the technology we take for granted today. As we evolve our audit shops Data Analytics only becomes more and more critical. To support the need to grow our expertise in Data Analytics, our Chapter is excited to have Mr. Excel host an all-day seminar on March 22nd. The day will be split into two segments with a Power Excel

class in the morning and an Advanced Data Analytics class in the afternoon. Register now as early bird pricing ends February 28th. From a different point of view, Adam Keal will present “Robotics and Process Automation” at our upcoming lunch meeting, March 14th. Also, Junior Achievements in a Day is March 28th. It is a great way to give back to the children in our community. Don’t forget to sign up today!

Please take the time to complete our member survey found in this month’s newsletter. We value the feedback and incorporate suggestions into our meeting programs and seminars. With your participation we can continue to address the needs of our chapter.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY We are excited to present “Robotics and Process Automation.” Robotics Process Automation (“RPA”) can fundamentally change the way companies work by automating process activities through the use of software (e.g. robots). Widespread adoption would alter the size and composition of your company’s workforces. This, combined with the use of RPA in the audit function will fundamentally shift the way auditors plan and execute their audits.

PRESENTERS’ PROFILES Brad Thiessen Adam Keal is a Senior Manager in the Advisory Services practice of Ernst & Young LLP. Adam is responsible for the delivery of EY’s Advisory services across a wide range of industries and competencies, with extensive experience in financial audit support. Adam has over 12 years of IT audit and IT consulting experience, with a focus on IT risk. QUALITY ASSESSMENT REVIEW

In 2013 the chapter be-gan a Quality Assessment Review program. Partici-pants attended an IIA training that instructed them on how to perform third party validation reviews of internal audit department’s compliance with the International Professional Practices Framework. The audit departments that were interested paid an extra fee and sent a staff mem-ber to the training and for their commitment of staff and money would receive a third party validation. A few participants agreed to volunteer to partici-pate in at least one exter-nal validation. We have received some interest from a couple of departments interested in the chapter program. We are reaching out to the membership to deter-mine the continued inter-est in this program. Please click here to take a short survey. To date, the chapter has performed three validations. We have two departments that are in the process of getting ready to receive an external validation of their self-assessment.

CIA CERTIFICATION NEWS

Jessica Jetton completed the requirement for the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) program and has therefore earned the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation. Effective April 1, 2017, there will be an increase for IIA Certification application, registration, and CPE/CPD reporting fees. If you plan to apply to register for an IIA certification, consider taking action now, before the fee increase on April 1, 2017. To learn more, visit the Certification Fee Increase web page. If you have any questions, please submit an incident in CCMS.

CIA Review Course Sullivan University is in the planning stages of preparing to offer a CIA Review Course. Specifically, there are trying to gauge partition and timing. Due to lack of interest for a February session the course is now being targeted for the first half of March or the first half of April. If you are interested in attending the course or would like to provide a suggestion regarding the timing please email Bob Aemmer, Certification Chair.

MEMBER SURVEY

Please participate in our Annual Member Survey. This is the best way for our Chapter to gage meeting and seminar topics that will benefit our members, identify areas for improvement, and grow our involvement. The survey will only take a few minutes to complete. Participants will be placed in a drawing for a $50 gift card. We value your feedback.

MANAGING YOUR AUDIT CAREER IIA President and CEO Richard Chambers, CIA, CGAP, CCSA, CRMS, has recently shared his personal reelections and insights through his blog. We wanted to share with you a few of these with our members. Check out the links to read more. There is No Room for Fake News or Alternative Facts in Internal Audit Click Here for the full article. I have been thinking of late about a common expression in America that comes from the classic television show, "Dragnet." The protagonist of the gritty police series, Sgt. Joe Friday, is forever linked to the expression, "Just the facts, ma'am." Nowadays, it seems getting just the facts is easier said than done. The debate emanating from Washington, D.C., about "alternative facts" and "fake news" has served as fodder for the media, political pundits, and late-night talk show hosts. But it should be particularly troubling to anyone who works in internal auditing. One of the fundamentals of our profession is communicating the results of our audits in a clear, concise, and objective manner, and there should never be disagreements over our final reports when it comes to the facts. One definition of fact is, "anything that is indisputably the case." This definition, while seemingly straightforward, leaves wiggle room for those who want to debate what is indisputable. And it is one of the 21st Century's most ubiquitous features that is feeding that debate. The internet has contributed greatly to the fuss over facts. Never in human history has information flowed so easily to so many people. Yet the internet lends credibility to things that aren't trustworthy or even to outright falsehoods. Don't get me wrong. Alternative points of view are important, but the internet has no filter on whether something is factual or not. Ironically, the greatest communication tool in human history has made it easier for people to forge their own version of the facts and insulate themselves from information that doesn't agree with their points of view.
