Ms. Mialani Marie Love will be crowned as the next Miss Pacific Islander of San Diego at the 8th Taste of the Pacific Islands. She is a high school graduate of Helix Charter High School, planning to attend Grossmont Cuyamaca College in the fall of 2011 and then transfer to San Diego State University to major in Broadcast/Television/Film. Only seventeen years old, Mia has been greatly involved in the community and arts in many ways. She represents her culture through dancing with Taupou Samoa and The Samoan Community Council. She has also volunteered with PIFA since she was twelve participating in the festivals and fundraising efforts. She is actively involved in the Inner-City Faith Fellowship as a Dance Team Facilitator and Instructor, a member of the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, Dance Conservatory and Pin Pals Jr. Links. Mia is excited to find more avenues to involve the Pacific Island youth in learning and celebrating the Pacific Island cultures, and she looks forward to participating and taking charge of major initiatives to support this endeavor.

In the last fourteen years, PIFA has awarded approximately $80,000 in scholarship awards to high school seniors and college undergraduates.

This year PIFA will be awarding $7,500 to the 2011 PIFA Scholarship Program awardees, and an additional $1500 to the Miss Pacific Islander of San Diego Scholarship Pageant.

Recipients chosen for these awards are selected based on a standard criteria and methodology that evaluates each applicant for: (1) High School or College Academics, (2) Community Service, (3) Participation and Perceived Capacity to Promote Culture, (4) Potential (Goals) to Contribute to Community of Pacific Islanders and (5) Letters of Recommendations.

Winners of this award are considered “exceptional” when it comes to their rankings in school, affiliations in the Pacific Island community and potential in continuing to share their Pacific Island cultures.

Congratulations to all of the 2011 PIFA Scholarship Winners!

The reigning Miss Pacific Islander of San Diego, Paige Nicholette Hudson, is of Samoan ancestry and is currently in her second year at Mesa College. Her goal is to become a registered nurse in oncology, by obtaining a Bachelor’s in Science Nursing at Cal State San Marcos. She loves working with children and has been able to do so in much of her high school experience through church and youth group program. Additionally, through her reign as Queen, she has been involved with events targeted to the younger generation, such as the Let’s Move campaign, the SDSU High School Conference, various community events in San Diego and Los Angeles, and she also served as a judge in the Point Loma Miss South Pacific Pageant. She sustains her cultural upbringing by sharing her Samoan dancing, which she is very proud of and traditions that she has learned from her family. She has truly been an exceptional Queen and is thankful for the opportunity of being able to network with the community, and promote and support the missions of PIFA. Congratulations Paige on all of your accomplishments!

On April 2, 2011, PIFA sponsored a bus for people from the San Diego community to participate in the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) Youth Health and Fitness Day, held in Los Angeles, CA at the University of California State Los Angeles. The objective of this event was to address the alarming and increasing rate of overweight and obesity plaguing Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. Fifteen hundred people came together to celebrate the first NHPI Youth Health and Fitness Day with the White House Initiative on AAPIs with Commissioners Sefa Aina and Hines Ward, and friends Marcus McNeill, Troy Polamalu and Jillian Micheals! Jillian provided an awesome, action-packed fitness demonstration with the youth. It was followed by six fitness stations- from hot hula to Pacific Islander boot camp to rugby practice and student-led exercises.

We welcome any and all who would like to contribute their volunteer efforts to help PIFA support its mission. Become a member and also take advantage of these great benefits:
