Deputy Principal’s Corner - te iwi tahi tatou – we are one family…

Last week as I watched two builders navigate a huge window frame through a narrow doorway and

listened as they worked together to insert the window I could not help but think about all the skills I was

observing:

● Working together - collaboration, team work

● Relating to others - chatting about the job to be done

● Problem solving - working out possible solutions

● Measuring - accurately measuring to ensure a good fit

● Contributing - to a successful job outcome

● Resilience - not giving up when a job becomes difficult

It was a great lesson to me of the value of all that we try to

teach and model at our school - life long skills that help within the workplace and beyond. I am sure

many of you have observed similar things in your workplaces. What seem like simple life skills are the

essence of highly functioning people.

At Churton Park School we highly value the key competencies and our school values as integral parts of

our curriculum. Staff model them daily and praise students when they see them displaying them too.

This sets them up to be successful citizens who are able to contribute to society in

a positive way. The many workmen and women we have on-site at the moment

are examples of this to us as they work together to build our school for the future.

It is great that we are able to point this out to our students as diggers demolish,

builders configure and work vehicles come and go, people working together

harmoniously on a common goal.

I guess there are lessons all around us to be learnt. Enjoy the holiday break and

who knows what school might look like when we return.

CELEBRATING MATARIKI IN TEAM TUI

Matariki marks the Māori New Year and celebrations started this week. In Team Tui the children wrote stories about Matariki and during Learning through Play they made their own butter, and also some vegetable soup. They then made

toast and shared the soup – and many children had never had vegetable soup before! A great idea so thank you teachers for celebrating Matariki with our youngest children at school.

Board of Trustees Update Hello everyone.

With James Malden retiring as Chair of the Board, our first decision was to appoint a replacement. I am very pleased to accept the position as Chair and to represent CPS. James has left some rather large shoes to fill.

Our recent meeting was one of welcomes and goodbyes. Firstly we welcomed our new Board members, Emily, Susan, Kentaro and Nikita. The Board is very grateful to all of the parents who put themselves forward for election. The level of interest and support for the School was amazing.

Anne presented her 88th and final Principal's Report to the Board. Anne provided us with an update on a number of areas including teacher appraisals, staff appointments, and the status of our property project. As a School and a Board we have been very fortunate to have Anne's vast experience, energy and commitment over the past decade. We will very much miss Anne around the Board table. However, we look forward to welcoming Matt Stanley in the new term.

Finally, I wanted to ask for your assistance. School drop off and pick up times are becoming increasingly busy, especially with the building works in full swing. The Board’s ask of each of you is to exercise good road safety practices. Please be mindful of where you park, the maneuvers you execute, and more generally the safety of all our children.
