Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathan Lawler A Team Approach In 2019, we have a number of new and exciting teams that will see us continue to grow as a school. Our teaching staff, have joined one of the following teams: Literacy, Numeracy, Wellbeing, Student Coaching, Higher Order Thinking, Promotions and Publicity, Tech- nology, Sustainability, School systems (timetable) and a Gifted and Talented Leadership team. Each team has put together some goals that they will work towards. This is a great opportunity for staff to work collegial- ly on shared goals. This structure will build on the established teams that we already have such as our Learning and Support team. There will no doubt be many opportunities for students and to work alongside these teams throughout the year. Student Coaching Many of our Year 12 students have been undertaking their first rounds of coaching. Coaching in our school is recognised as a key ingredient in student improvement and an important way to build initiative. There are many definitions of coaching, but essentially our aim is to facilitate self-directed learning and development. We are fortunate to have a number of staff, who are trained growth coaches. The terms coaching and men- toring are often conjoined and their meanings conflated in educational discourse. Mentoring is often de- scribed as an expert–novice relationship where there is an expectation of advice-giving based on the greater experience, knowledge or skill level of the mentor. It can also be a longer term and less formal engagement than coaching. A coaching approach encourages the student to decide their next steps. Of course there are times when the time to give advice is needed and on these occasions we will. Sitting with a student just this week, we addressed these questions: - Overall, at the moment how are you feeling about your studies? - With ‘10’ feeling completely comfortable with your progress across all courses and ‘1’ feeling completely lost, where would you sit? - If you were to move one step towards 10 on the scale, what might that mean to you? - What would you see yourself doing if working at this level? How might you get there? With only a few simple questions the student reflected on his current progress and put some improvement steps in place. All this was completed in only 20 minutes. One of the important things that our students need to be reminded of is that taking one step is better than doing nothing. Further to the coaching that has been taking place with our Year 12 students, Mrs Mercer and Mrs Whittle have been training Year 11 students as coaches. With the longer-term goal that these students will coach junior students later in the year. I will keep you posted as to how this goes. Personal Best Tracking This term, years 7-10 will be participating in Personal Best Tracking’. This means that EVERY student in years 7-10 will receive a mark out of 5 from ALL their teachers for EFFORT. This initiative is designed to recognise students who are putting in the effort and may not always receive the recognition they deserve. Last year students in our Year 8 trial group received a reward if they achieved an average of 4 or above across all subjects. This year we are making it more challenging to receive the reward. Students will need to gain an average of 4.5 or above. Many thanks to the P&C for supporting this initiate and Mrs Nunura for her organisation. Term 1 Week 4 22 February 2019

Deputy Principal Matters by Nathan Lawler

A Team Approach In 2019, we have a number of new and exciting teams that will see us continue to grow as a school. Our teaching staff, have joined one of the following teams: Literacy, Numeracy, Wellbeing, Student Coaching, Higher Order Thinking, Promotions and Publicity, Tech-nology, Sustainability, School systems (timetable) and a Gifted and Talented Leadership team. Each team has put together some goals that they will work towards. This is a great opportunity for staff to work collegial-ly on shared goals.

The terms coaching and men-toring are often conjoined and their meanings conflated in educational discourse. Mentoring is often de-scribed as an expert–novice relationship where there is an expectation of advice-giving based on the greater experience, knowledge or skill level of the mentor. It can also be a longer term and less formal engagement than coaching. A coaching approach encourages the student to decide their next steps. Of course there are times when the time to give advice is needed and on these occasions we will.

Sitting with a student just this week, we addressed these questions:

- Overall, at the moment how are you feeling about your studies?- With ‘10’ feeling completely comfortable with your progress across all courses and ‘1’ feeling completelylost, where would you sit?- If you were to move one step towards 10 on the scale, what might that mean to you?- What would you see yourself doing if working at this level? How might you get there?

With only a few simple questions the student reflected on his current progress and put some improvement steps in place. All this was completed in only 20 minutes. One of the important things that our students need to be reminded of is that taking one step is better than doing nothing. Further to the coaching that has been taking place with our Year 12 students, Mrs Mercer and Mrs Whittle have been training Year 11 students as coaches. With the longer-term goal that these students will coach junior students later in the year. I will keep you posted as to how this goes.

Personal Best Tracking This term, years 7-10 will be participating in ‘Personal Best Tracking’.

Reminder that Bootcamp is held on Friday mornings at 7.00 am

and is open to students, staff and parents.

Please wear appropriate footwear and bring a bottle of water. Brekkie Club serves breakfast at 8.00 am.

Excellent Mathematics Results Last week, Will G (year 10) came 4th out of 726 students from 15 coun-tries in the first round of the academic year in the Caribou Contests, a mathematics competition based in Canada. Nina K (year 10) also did very well, coming in the top 9% in the same competition. In all age groups, students from 28 countries were involved. Many thanks to Ms Berger for organising this. Afternoon Buses Getting our students home of an afternoon at a reasonable time is im-portant to us. This week we met again with Transdev to request that the afternoon buses be brought forward. We realise that we have a large number of students who travel long distances of an afternoon, who rely on connecting modes of transport. We hope that Transdev will meet our requests. Bootcamp A special mention to Nicole C and Nashua H (year 10) for assisting when running Bootcamp sessions this year. For the past 2 weeks, we had over 50 participants. More the merrier! We will devise the session to ensure everyone is involved, moving and having fun for the full 60 minutes. Come along. Best wishes Nathan Lawler Deputy Principal

A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE … We have an unusually large volume of lost property in the office. As well as a plethora of school clothing there are sport shoes, casual clothes, drink bottles, lunch boxes and even a sleeping bag. If your child has lost any of these items, ask them to go to the Office to check the Lost Property box. Clothing not claimed will be donated to charity and drink bottles, lunch boxes etc will be discarded. Thank you.

LIBRARY NEWS

LIBRARY FLASH FICTION COMPETITION

We had six students enter the Australian Library and Information Association's (ALIA) Library Lovers' Day 2019 Flash Fiction Competition. Students had to write a 200 word short story starting with the prompt "There was love to be found in the library...". Who would have thought that you could write such amazing stories in just 200 words. Congratulations to Dongchu. L (Year 7), Brenda. L (Year 8), John.M (Year 8), Hana.J (Year 9), Arsh.G (Year 10), and Mina.K (Year 12) on your entries, we love them and are sure the judges at ALIA will too.

Check out this great story by John M (Year 8)

“There was love to be found in the library, but not for me. I hated it. I couldn’t understand what the point was reading pieces of paper with words typed on it. But it was a hot day and the library had air con so I was going. I wanted to sit there and play on my phone but I wasn’t allowed. I found the first book on the shelf and started reading. Boring. Next Book. Boring. You know what they say, third time’s a charm. It was. I found myself vigorously flicking the pages to see what my characters were up to next it felt like hours since I had started reading. Then the bell rang. I rolled my eyes. I trotted off to period one in a bad mood. The clock ticked slowly. Would this ever end. Finally. I sprinted to the library dodging people after peo-ple until I arrived at the door. It was bad. ‘LIBRARY CLOSED’ the sign read. I walked away with my head down. The doors behind me opened. The beams of the library shone towards me…… There was love to be found in the library and I found it.”

E-BOOKS AND AUDIO BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY

Did you know you can now download a range of great e-books and audio books from the Library catalogue? (Look for OLIVER Library in the Student portal) You can download directly to your de-vice using the Library catalogue or you can search for St Ives High School using the Wheelers E-platform App, and log using your DET username and password. Come and see the Library staff to find out more.
