About the Lake...

DePoorter Lake was created in 1988 when fill dirt was excavated for use in the Highway 138-Union Pacific Railroad viaduct. The former Colorado Division of Wildlife began building a fishery in 1989 by stocking hy-brid sunfish and channel catfish in the lake. The following year, bluegill and rainbow trout were added to the stocking schedule to expand the fishery. Since then, a variety of species including yellow perch, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, saugeye, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, and cuttbow have been purposefully stocked. Green sunfish, black and white crappie, and common carp have been illicitly introduced.

Figure 1. Relative abundance of fish species caught during the 2016 to 2019 annual surveys at DePoorter Lake. Shades of blue represent the panfish population comprised of bluegill, green sunfish, hybrid sunfish, black crappie, white crappie, and yellow perch. Fish caught during the 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 surveys were caught with 54, 59, 63, and 46 hours of gillnetting, 64, 67, 70, and 52 hours of trap netting, and 2, 1, 1, and 2 hours of electrofishing, respectively.

In addition to providing numerous opportunities for kids to catch fish, DePoorter Lake’s panfish prey base sup-ports predatory sportfish. Expansion of the panfish population allowed for higher numbers of predators, such as walleye, largemouth bass, and channel catfish, to be stocked (Figure 1). These elevated stocking rates should help satisfy angler’s desires to catch more of these species. The biggest walleye, largemouth bass, and channel catfish caught during the 2019 annual survey measured 17.40” (1.60 lb), 17.64” (2.95 lb), and 24.88” (10.74lb), respectively (Table 1).
