Departmental Activities (2016-17)
BOTANICAL TOUR- Ayurvan, Bazargaon
The department of Botany, Hislop
College undertook a short tour to a
medicinal plant garden Ayurvan, in
Bazargaon, of Kondhali Forest Range
(District: Nagpur) on September 10,
2016. It was undertaken as a part of the
curriculum of PG students and a
technical report on the medicinal plants
encountered in the visit will be submitted as an internal assessment requisite.
The team was welcomed and addressed by Mr. Ambarish Ghatate and Mr. Mohit Sherekar
who have conceived and maintained the place. The students were taken on a guided tour
through the medicinal plant plots of the area. The plantations covered common medicinal
plants also plants devoted to depict the ethno-environmental practices encompassing
plants.
The second session included a quiz and an
interactive game session where the plants
were to be identified based on the description
given to them. The winners of both the
competitive sessions were encouraged with
certificates and saplings. The tour was highly
informative, educative and entertaining at the
same time.

BOTANICAL TOUR- Ramtek
On September 20, 2016, the department of
Botany, Hislop College engaged a batch of 57
students of B.Sc. Semester I in a one day
Botanical tour to the vicinity of Khindsi lake
near Ramtek, District: Nagpur. The
surrounding area of the lake offered a
plethora of vegetation to be seen and studied
in their natural habitat. After this plant
identification session, the students were
occupied with games which were played with
the aim of engendering appreciation of
Biodiversity. Three groups of 18 -20 students
each, competed for 2 games of plant
recognition and one for developing awareness
for natural surroundings through sights and
sounds.
SCIENCE Talk
I. Dr. R S Badere
The Department of Botany, under the
banner of “Science Talk” collaborated
with Department of Botany, RTM,
Nagpur University, Nagpur to organize
a lecture on ‘Site Directed
Mutagenesis’ on 19th September 2016.
The speaker for the programme was Dr
R. S. Badere, Assistant Professor at
Department of Botany, RTM, Nagpur
University. He introduced the students to the very basic of Mutagenesis and specially
emphasizing on Site directed Mutagenesis. He discussed the Spontaneous mutation, enormity of
Recombinant technology. He explained the use of PCR in site directed mutagenesis.

II. Dr. S B Nandeshwar
The Department of Botany, organized a
lecture on ‘Development of genetically
modified cotton for insect and disease
resistant using Agrobacterium tumifaciens
and Meristem cell’ on 4th February 2017.
The speaker for the programme was Dr S.B.
Nandeshwar, a Principle Scientist at Central
Institute for cotton Research, Nagpur. He
addressed the students pursuing post
graduation in the department. He
introduced the students to the very basic of
Transgenic plants and specially emphasizing
on development of genetically modified
cotton for insect and disease resistant using
Agrobacterium tumifaciens and Meristem
cell. Further in his talk, Dr Nandeshwar explained the discovery of Baccilus thurigensis, isolation
of Cry IA protein and its use for creating disease resistance plants. Dr Nandeshwar delightfully
took questions from the students and interacted with them.
III. Dr. N.M.Dongarwar
The Department of Botany, under the banner
of “Science Talk” organized a lecture on
‘Programmed Cell Death. The speaker for the
programme was Dr N.M. Dongarwar, who is
an Assistant Professor at PGT Department of
Botany, R.T.M. Nagpur University, Nagpur. Dr.
Dongarwar introduced the students to the
concept of programmed cell death. He discussed the types of cell death, and also emphasized on
importance of PCD in the life cycle of plants. Further in his talk, Dr Dongarwar, discussed in details
about senescence, and types of senescence. Dr Dongarwar delightfully took questions from the
students and interacted with them

Green Window
Students of class IX, Jain Heritage School visited the Department of Botany, Hislop College on 7th
October 2016. Followed by students of class X on 20th October 2016, to learn about the basics and
applied aspects of Botany. The department showcased a presentation on floriculture, mushroom
cultivation, Vermicompost practices and tissue culture techniques. This day of interaction unfolded
many queries of students regarding to the subject specialties and career opportunities. The
Department received an enthusiastic and zestful feedback from the students and the teachers.
CAREER ORIENTED COURSE: Allied Agricultural Skills
The first edition of RTMNU certified Allied Agricultural course was undertaken by the department of
Botany for the students pursuing various courses in the college. The
course incepted on September 28, 2016 with a three module course plan
including Floriculture, Mushroom Cultivation and Vermicomposting. A
batch of 30 students undertook the course for this season. At the end of
the course, Feedback was taken from the students for further analysis
Over all competence of the resource persons was scored above average
and the head of extent of course coverage was given an average score
by the students. With a further analysis of the feedback forms; the
department is determined to rectify the shortcomings. The course
culminated with a Course-end examination.

FLOWER SHOW
Department of Botany organized the XIII Annual Flower Show on 3 and 4 December 2016,
celebrating the tradition of showcasing wide range of flowers grown and nurtured in the
College premises. This edition of the show was inaugurated by Dr. Sudipta Singh, Secretary
Hislop Education Society Mr in presence of of Dr.Dipti Christian, Principal, Hislop College.
Prominently present for the show was Mr.Prem Masih, Director UCNITA and Vice Chairman
Hislop Education Society. ‘Papilion’, a Sit and Draw competition for school students as a part
of Flower Show was a success among the stuents who participated in big numbers. Around
seven prominent city schools with around hundred students participated in the competition.

PRIZES
I. The Department of Botany, Hislop College, won
12 prizes at the Nagpur Garden Club and
Hitavada Monsoon Show. The show was held
on 11th September 2016 in Kusum Tai
Wankhede Hall.

II. Botany department participated in the Annual
Flower show 2017, organized BY Nagpur Garden
Club and Hitavada on 8th and 9th January 2017
and won 7 Prizes,
o FIRST PRIZES 2 o SECOND PRIZES 3 o THIRD PRIZE 2 o CONSOLATION PRIZE 1
III. Department was also awarded 8 Prizes Friends
International Flower Show organized by Friends International and NMC on 14 and 15
January 2017.

IV. Botany Department participated in the Annual
Flower show 2017 organized by Vidhan Bhawan,
PWD and Departments of Nurseries and Garden
Nagpur on 25 and 26 January 2017. Department
bagged four prizes:
o FIRST PRIZES 1 o SECOND PRIZES 3
TRAINING MODULE FOR C.R.P.F
A 6 day workshop on Floriculture, Vermicomposting Mushroom cultivation and Basic
tissue cultural practices was conducted by the department from March 20 – 25, 2017.
The workshop included theory as well as hands-on and onsite training. The
programme was conducted as a consultancy on the request of CRPF. The objective of
the module was to train them about the basic concepts of the above practices
through visual aids. To make the comprehension more lucid, the faculty members
also provided an onsite demonstration.
STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENTS
o As a part of the Wildlife Week celebrations 2016-17
by the Maharashtra State Forest Department, a
wildlife quiz was organized at the Banyan hall of
Chitnavis center on October 5, 2016. A three
member team of Rushant Dhanwatey (B.Sc Sem I)
Ramthampuia Reang (B.Sc Sem I) and Aditya
Ankari (M.Sc Sem III Botany), representing the
Department of Botany, Hislop College, secured
second position
o Mr. Mrunal Warhade -Research student, won 3rd Prize
for Oral Presentation, ‘Influence of different Salts and

Carbon concentration on multiple shoot induction through recurrent
regeneration in Celosia cristata at National Conference on Advances and
Innovations in Plant Sciences GVISH, Amravati,29 Feb- 1st March 2016
o Mohd. Jaffer-PG student presented, ‘In vitro screening
of Gliocladium virens against wilt and leaf blight of
Chrysanthemum sp’ at 11th Maharashtra StateInter-
University Research Convention –‘AVISHKAR -2016’, and
cleared -STAGE II and III.
He participated at 11th State Inter –University Research Convention
AVISHKAR-2016 held at Swami Ramanand Teerth MarathwadaUniversity,
Nanded (MS) during January 27-19, 2017
o Ms. Alisha David & Ms. Ashwini Rangari- PG student
competed in Inter Collegiate Science Project
Competition, held in Kamla Nehru Mahavidyalaya on
22nd October 2016, for their working model, ‘Waste
Water Management through Moringa Seeds’ and won
the consolation prize.
Ms. Deepika Rajendra Sarda Awarded Late.Smt.
Kamala Nautamal Trivedi Prize by RTM, Nagpur
University for obtaining highest percentage of
marks in Subject Botany (B.Sc I, II,III) at 103rd
Convocation.
Mr. Fiyaz Ahmed a PG student cleared NET in 2016.

Mr.Paresh Ninawe- joined as JRF at GVISH, Amravati under
BRNS (Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences)-DAE Project
o Ms.Deepka Sarda -PG student competed in Students
Video Making Competion held in Dr.Ambedkar
College,Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur , organized by Indian
Women Scie ntists’ Association on 28th February 2017 on
the theme Life Made Easy by Science and Technology – was
awarded 3RD Prize for video titled ‘Floriculture: A New
Start up’
o Ms.Farkhanda Khan participated and presented a ppt
presentation in ‘Scintillation 17 Vital Application of Basic
Sciences’ a state level competion for undergraduate
students organized by Jankidevi Bajaj College of Science,
wardha on 1st March 2017 for her topic, ‘Development of
drought tolerance in plants by genetic Modification’.
o Mr Benson Abraham & Mr. Aditya Ankari
participated in the Inter-University Best
Seminar Competition, organised by GVISH,
Amrawati in association with Indian
Science Congress. The theme of the
competition was “Biotechnology & the
Future Prospects”

o Ms. Parama Majumdar was awarded 3rd Prize for her presentation entitled,
“Protein Profiling of Galled and Ungalled leaves of Alastonia Scholaris” in
National Conference on ‘Recent Trends in Plant Sciences’ organized by
Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University Aurangabad, Department of
Botany in association with Marathwada Botanical Society, Aurangabad on 1-2
March 2017.
