Chicago is a large and exciting city with many diverse communities and plenty of interesting things to see and do. Like most major metropolitan areas, it also has its share of crime. Unfortunately some students who study here forget to keep their personal safety a top priority. This presentation is designed to give you some practical advice about staying safe in Chicago.

Five Ways to Increase Your Personal Safety

20

1) Reduce or eliminate opportunities that may make you a target.

2) Increase awareness of places where you’re most comfortable.

3) Trust your instincts regardless of feeling embarrassed - avoid behaviors that put you in danger.

4) Prepare your daily schedule with safety in mind.

Personal Safety

21

Avoid multi tasking - talking on a cell phone, texting and/or listening to music - affects manual, visual & cognitive performance.

Walk with confidence, make eye contact and watch hands.

Keep your conversations private.

Do not display expensive electronic devices.

Stay on well lit sidewalks, away from alleys, empty lots, short cuts and secluded areas with heavy vegetation.

Stay on major streets with high pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

When possible - walk on the side of the street facing traffic so a car cannot pull up behind you unnoticed.

If followed, go to the nearest emergency call box, an open business, or populated area.

Personal Safety

22

If followed; - Turn- Look - Cross the street - Change direction- Go to a “safe place”- Make a note of subject’s appearance and call 911

Wear comfortable shoes in case you have to run

Avoid confrontations - it’s better and safer to walk away if you are being provoked or harassed

Do not force yourself or allow others force you into situations that make you feel uncomfortable

Have a plan developed in your mind on what to do if attacked

You have every right to defend yourself with reasonable force with items that you may have with you such as: umbrella, keys, or pepper spray

Don’t build your safety plan around a personal safety device

In the event of a robbery

23

If a robber approaches and demands money or property - don’t argue, fight, or negotiate with the offender. Don’t escalate a property crime into a violent confrontation. Note the robber’s description and give the robber the money. Your well-being is more important than money or property.

Get away and call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so.

All robberies should be reported to police as soon as possible.

Be prepared to provide the following information: weapon (if used), number of offenders, sex, race, age, height weight, clothing description, direction of travel. If vehicle is used during the commission of the robbery, be prepared to provide the vehicle’s color, registration (license plate number) make, model, and direction of travel.

Theft Prevention for Laptop Computers

27

According to the FBI, 97% of stolen laptop computers are never recovered.

Educational institutions experience the highest number of laptop thefts.

Consider tracking software for your computer.

Maintain a record for your laptop. Take a photo and record the make, model and serial number for your laptop. If it goes missing, the police will not be able to locate your laptop without this information and you will not be able to prove ownership.
