CENTRE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

INTRODUCTION

"Agenda 21" of the Earth Summit (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil attended by representatives from more than 150 nations including India) has identified environmental issues requiring topmost attention:

1. Changing consumption patterns of scarce natural resources. 2. Integrating environm ent and development into decisionmaking processes. 3. Promoting education, public awareness and training for mitigating environm ental problems.

The summit sets out a global consensus addressing th e pressi ng environm ental problems of today and aims at preparing the world for the challenges waiting ahead. Hence, it places great emphasis on the need for all sections of society to participate in working towards sustainable development - developm ent that meets the needs of the present without compromising th e ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Th erefore, every action at local level is equally vital for the continued economical and social development of the world without detriment to the environm ent and natural resources.

liT Guwahati visualises an active role for itself in dealing with new directions and concerns emerging from the mitigatory efforts of environmental problems of the day. In order to give a concrete shape to this visualization, liT Guwahati has established a full-fiedged centre - Centre for the Environment, which has started functioning since 17 May 2004.

Th e main objectives of the Centre for the Environment are to promote interdisciplinary research and development, to impart postgraduate ed ucation, to create public awareness and to train manpower for mitigating environmental problems.
