The Laboratory Animal Facility, an important resource for research
Medical progress often implies the use of animal models in research. The Lab Animal Facility is a core facility at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and a K1 responsibility. Good strategic
management will ensure that the experiments are relevant and leads to new knowledge.
The Lab Animal Facility is a very important resource for medical research in Western Norway. Designa-ted staff with expertise, customized facilities, central location and close collaboration between rese-archers and the staff of the core facility provide good conditions. Many of our clinical and para-clinical communities has a tradition of translational research where clinical problems are examined experimen-tally.
Particularly two conditions necessitate a critical view on research experiments involving animals. Ani-
mal health and welfare are key concepts. An absolute requirement is that all activities which entail the
use of animals is sufficiently useful. Research of this kind is also costly.
At the moment there are about 150 research projects registered at the The Lab Animal Facility. This is
close to what the facility is able to handle. Personnel is currently the most crucial limiting factor.
The Lab Animal Facility must be involved already when researchers are planning new projects. It is im-
portant to ensure that the resource is available before applying for funding and appointing personnel. All
projects must also have a qualified project manager who are aware of all responsibilities.
The Lab Animal Facility has a Scientific Advisory Group. They provide advice to the management,
especially when it comes to priorities. Research using rodents (mice, rats) increases significantly. New
opportunities in genetics and biomarkers shift knowledge boundaries. There is a great demand for the
services of the Lab Animal Facility, and publication results are to some extent very good. Research
using large animals do not show the same expansion. The Lab Animal Facility’s profile is changing.
As with all core facilities you have to pay for the use of
The Lab Animal Facility. The price list should reflect all
actual costs. The price of similar services elsewhere is
relevant. It may be relevant to consider the research
groups’ own contributions when invoicing.
Research focus and organization are constantly chang-
ing. Both the research groups and the Lab Animal Facili-
ty need to keep up with the development. This also
means having to make challenging priorities.

Career choices central issue at the Orpheus-conference 2014
Lausanne in Switzerland was the place to be April 3-5, at the ninth Orpheus-conference. Ca-reer possibilities and quality of supervision for PhD-candidates in biomedicine and health scien-ces were main focus at the conference this year.
There were several hundred participants from more than 40 countries, looking more closely at what ca-reer choices a PhD-candidate in health sciences has. Particularly stressed was how important it is that the PhDs are made aware of the different possibi-lities that exist.
Professor Roland Jonsson is leader of the program com-mittee for research education at the faculty. He participated along with assoc. professor Gülen Arslan Lied, scientific coordinator for research edu-cation at the faculty.

Name: Ingvild Vandeskog Wallacher
Family: I am married and have a daughter who is 1,5 years old.
Lives: At Nordnes.
Originally from: Åsane.
What is your position and what do you actually do? I am a Higher Executive Officer at the Personnel section. I have only been here 1 month so I am still trying to get to know what I’m actually supposed to work with. There is a wide variety of tasks within personnel issues. Till now I have been mostly occupied with writing offers of employment and employment contracts, and processing leave of absence applications and sick leaves. As I understand, this is just some of the tasks that I will be working with, so there are probably a lot that I haven’t been presented with yet.
What's great about the job, and what can be challenging? I've got a very good impression of the job after my first month here. It is difficult to say anything specific after such a short time in the job, but I look forward to having a go at many new challenges.
What do you like to do in your own time? After I became a mother there has been a major shift in what I use my leisure time on. It is usually time spent with my family and my daughter, which is great. Of hobbies, dancing is what I do most.

New internet pages
The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is now the last faculty to get to use UiB‘s new web system.
This means that our web pages looks a bit different as of April 9th.
You will see the change mainly in the front page, with a lay-out adapted also for mobile phones and tablets. You will also see some other changes.
The largest change is for us who edit the web pages, with better functionalities and larger capacity in the system.
Web pages for research groups
More and more of K1‘s research groups have discovered that they can get professional web pages in the UiB system. They have seen the value of having an active web page, especially when applying for funding, or when ente-ring into partnerships nationally or internationally. In such cases they are often expected to refer to a web page sho-wing the research group's work and members. It is also useful in contact with the media.
We encourage all K1‘s research groups to contact K1‘s web editor [email protected] to establish a web page for the group. Read here about K1‘s criteria to be a formal research group presented at K1‘s web.
See example of a research group web page at K1.
Computer safety The IT-department wants to help the individual employee and student to take better care of his/her data, both in their work/studies but also in their private lives. "Computer safety" is there-fore the topic of their last information leaflet. The enclosed leaflet (Norw.) explains what computer safety is, which information that could use extra pro-tection, what dangers there are lurking, what the IT-department does to protect against these, and what
you can do yourself. We recommend you to have a look at the leaflet!
Information regarding security vul-nerabilities discovered in OpenSSL
The media have the last days has stories about the «Heartbleed Bug» which makes it possible to steal information that is protected with SSL/TLS-encryption used to secure the internet.
See here what the story is about.
The University of Bergen has been using the Open SSL technology with security gaps. This applies to all web services with SSL (webmail, MySpace, bs.uib.no and many more). We have updated so that the security gap is remo-ved at the central services and we keep locating all ser-vices at the UiB which use this. It might still be best to change your password. Read more info here.
The government also recom-mends to change passwords, i.e. at facebook and gmail.
