DEPARTMENT OF CHILD HEALTH NURSING
The Department of Child Health Nursing at the Government College
of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram provides Courses related to Child
Health Nursing within the framework of Indian Nursing Council (INC)
and also Kerala Nursing Council. The courses offer the students, the
opportunity to identify the needs of children and provide
comprehensive care. The department is providing clinical and
classroom teaching for Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Diploma in
Nursing students.

World Breastfeeding Week
World Breastfeeding Week is an annual celebration which is held every year during August
1—7 in more than 120 countries all over the world. In the Year 2019 as part of World
Breastfeeding week, a programme named as “PECTUS LACTE” has been organised at Sree
Avittom Thirunal (SAT) Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram by the First Year M.Sc Nursing
Students of Department of Child Health Nursing. During this programme Health education,
Role play and Quiz competitions were conducted.
ORS Day
ORS Day is celebrated every year on 29th July to highlight the importance of Oral Rehydration
Salts (ORS) as a cost-effective method of health intervention. Acute diarrhoeal diseases are
one of the leading causes of mortality in infants and young children in many developing
countries. ORS Day in the year 2019 has been celebrated by Undergraduate and Postgraduate
students of Department of Child Health Nursing at Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital
Thiruvananthapuram by giving health education to mothers and conducted role play for
awareness.
COVID-19 Awareness Programme
The COVID-19 pandemic in India is part of the worldwide pandemic of Coronavirus disease
2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-
2). The first cases of COVID-19 in India were reported on 30 January 2020 in the towns
of Thrissur, Alappuzha and Kasargod, all in the state of Kerala, among three Indian medical
students who had returned from Wuhan, China.
In the wake of COVID 19 pandemic, Department of Child Health Nursing students and faculty
members of Government College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram initiated awareness
programme in SAT Hospital Wards and OPDs and also at public places where people gather.

Programme on introduction to OSCE
An OSCE is a type of examination often used in health sciences. It is designed to test clinical
skill performance and competence in a range of skills. It is a practical, real-world approach to
learning and assessment. Objective. Due to COVID 19 pandemic all university practical exams
are conducted by Objective Structured Clinical Examination so conducted a programme on
introduction to OSCE.
Webinar on Perspective in Paediatric Surgery and Genetics
Department of Child Health Nursing had conducted an International Webinar on “Perspectives
in Paediatric Surgery and Genetics” during 15—16 September 2020 at the Govt College of
Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram. This Webinar mainly dealt with common surgical conditions
in children, especially in Gastro & Urology and equip the participants with comprehensive
Nursing care of children after the surgery. Webinar also provided awareness on concepts of
clinical genetics and equip the participants with the basic genetic terminology and tools to
manage some of the malformation syndromes commonly encountered in surgical practice,
particularly during the new-born period.
