Programme Overview

The Architectural Conservation Programme (ACP) is an intensive postgraduate programme in the Department of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong. It is supported by UNESCO and recognized by government agencies in Hong Kong and Macau for its academic excellence. It is designed to meet the continuing educational needs of practising professionals in built-heritage conservation.

The objective of the programme is to provide postgraduate continuing education in built-heritage conservation, which is now recognized as an essential component of sustainable development, particularly in Asian cities undergoing rapid development. Courses in the programme are taught by full- and part-time staff members who are among leading academics and/or practising professionals in built-heritage conservation and related fields, and who come from countries such as Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mainland China, Malaysia, Thailand, U.K. and U.S.

ACP students are practising professionals from private practice and the civil service (about 6:4 ratio). About one third of the students are from Mainland China or overseas countries, and about one quarter of them are holders of master and PhD degrees. They come from diverse professional backgrounds, ranging from the fields of architecture, education, engineering, facilities management, journalism, landscape architecture, museology, project management, surveying, urban design and urban planning.

ACP offers a foundation programme (one-year part-time) leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Conservation [PDip(Conservation)] and an advanced programme (two-year part-time or one-year full-time) leading to a Master of Science in Conservation degree [MSc(Conservation)]. A research-based PhD programme is also available for qualified students. Students residing in Hong Kong and Macau may opt for either the part-time or the full-time programme, students from Mainland China and overseas countries may only apply for full-time studies.

Both the part- and full-time ACP syllabuses are fully integrated to enable maximum flexibility for students. The syllabus for Year-1 MSc(Conservation) studies is identical to that for the PDip(Conservation) curriculum. At the successful completion of Year-1 studies, students who have originally registered for PDip(Conservation) studies may transfer to Year-2 MSc(Conservation) studies. Students who register for full-time MSc studies are required to complete the two-year part-time curriculum within one academic year.
