Density altitude will be a prim e factor in your flight planning for Conven­tion. We have asked Gary Koch, R ocky M ounta in G A D O A cciden t P revention Sp ec ia lis t a n d a lo n g - tim e f r ie n d o f C olorado N inety-N ines, to review this im portant subject fo r us.

You will also want to plan to schedule the FAA Film, "D ensity A lt itu d e " fo r one o f your chapter meetings.

It is most assuredly a p p ro ac h in g th a t t ime of year when all av ia t ion m inded folks must be keenly aw are o f the quality a n d cond it ion of o u r local a tm ospher ic condit ions before a t tem pting a takeoff. Since pe rfo rm ance figures that are listed in the a irc raf t o w n e r ’s h a n d b o o k f o r l e n g th o f t a k e o f f r u n , horsepower, ra te o f c limb, etc., a re generally based on s ta n d ard a tm ospher ic condit ions ( tem pera ture 59 degrees Fahrenheit , pres­sure 29.92 inches o f mercury) at sea level, how often do we have s tan d ard a tm osphe r ic condit ions in the S ta te o f C o lo rad o du r ing the su m m er m onths?

I’m sure you would c o n cu r th a t s tan d ard a tm osphere is the excep tion ra th e r th a n the rule. So with this p ro fo u n d bit o f av ia t ion technology, tell me why there will be som e intrepid av ia tors th a t will fall prey to th a t old nemesis. Density Altitude?

Since d e n s i ty a l t i tu d e is the p re ssu re a l t i tu d e c o r re c te d fo r t e m p e r a t u r e , the h ig h er th e t e m p e ra tu r e , the h ig h e r th e density alt i tude. As the density a lt i tude goes up the p e rfo rm ance capabili ties o f a ircraft g o d o w n . W h e n t e m p e r a t u r e s b e c o m e higher th an s ta n d a rd for a certain locality, the density o f the a ir for th a t locality is reduced. This should alert th e pi lot th a t the trusty pow erp lan t will wheeze a n d gasp in the less dense a tm o sp h e re and as a result, a reduction o f ho rsepow er o u tp u t will occur. Now, you couple this with an increased takeoff roll, reduced c limb pe rfo rm ance and I can assure you tha t the p i lo t ’s “ pucker fac to r" will go over red line. N o t only m ight the a irp lane crash , but people could very well get h u r t o r even en d th e i r f ly ing activities pe rm anently . Now, if the pilot will t ake in to c onsidera tion the pressure a lt i tude and the tem p era tu re and pull ou t his t rusty “ c o n f u s e r " a n d c u n n in g ly c a lc u la te th e d e n s i t y a l t i t u d e , t h e f i r s t s t e p t o w a r d

ireventing an accident has tak en place. iVhen the pilot is aw are o f what the density ilt itude is, then it m ight be reasonable to issume th a t the pilot cou ld a rrive a t som e ogical d e c is io n s on w h e th e r the d a rn lirplane will take off a n d climb, so th a t a ;afe flight is practical, a t least fo r p lann ing purposes. But, if the pilot does no t even twirl tis co m p u te r o r go fiddle with a density ilt i tude g raph , va luable in fo rm a t io n will not 5e ob tained a n d believe me, we all need all he in fo rm a t io n th a t we can o b ta in when it ;omes to p lann ing a n d flying a safe flight.

If a pi lot looks at densi ty a lt i tude with a dense a tt i tude , the acc ident investigation :eam should get ready to sc ram ble to the site. Shortly after the Rally, Jim was hit in the back by a tree which was struck by lightning. T oday as 1 write, it’s back-to-school t ime. A lthough my four children are grown and my g randchild ren to o young to a ttend school, still i t ’s in the a ir and 1 en joy the th o u g h ts o f le a rn in g new sub jec ts . It has been in te re s t in g a n d abso rb ing to con tinue to learn m ore ab o u t our o rgan iza t ion and to sha re with you som e o f the things 1 have learned. The subject of m em bersh ip has com e up over and over. Ju s t when 1 th ink it has been m ore th an adequate ly covered, still m ore quest ions pop up. One area either not covered or not explained well is th is— what is a good an d seldom used so u rc e for o b t a in in g new m em b e rs? Easy,— the h undreds and h undreds of F O R M E R members. Often it takes only a telephone call to a fo rm er m em ber with an invita tion to a ttend the next meeting and to tell her the happy news th a t our B y law s n o w re a d : " U p o n C h a p t e r approval any former member o f The Ninety-Nines may be re insta ted without meeting new m em bersh ip requ irem en ts ." M ost fo rm er m em bers do no t realize they need no t have a B F R nor a cu rren t medi­cal. If a w o m an once w orked hard enough to earn the right to be a Ninety- Nine, she is welcome as a full-fledged m em b er always. C h a p te r M em bersh ip C h a irm en have app licat ion b lanks and could p robably increase their num bers substantia l ly by going back th ro u g h old Rosters and no ting which 99s have let their m em berships lapse. . . .no m atter how long ago.

Back a few sentences 1 used the express ion ’’full-fledged m em b e r" and som e of you will p robab ly challenge that description. Yes, we have Classifications o f M em b ersh ip — you voted to establish those categories at o u r 1975 C onven tion in C o eu r d ’Alene. If you would t ak e a m inute and tu rn to Page 282 o f your curren t Roster where Article IV, Section 3 o f the Bylaws will be found , y o u ’ll p robab ly agree tha t Emeri tus is a good Classification, as is the M em ber-a t-L arge Classification for those w ho live in countr ies an d areas where no Sections have been char tered . M any m em bers have com e to feel there is m uch to recom m end the Affiliate Classification, since Ninety-Nines living where there are S e c t i o n s c a n n o t be c la s s i f i e d as M em bers-a t-Large but may become

m em bers o f a Sec tion— or in o th e r w o rd s . A ff i l ia te M e m b er . A ff i l ia te mem bers a re not permit ted to hold office a t any level, a l th o u g h they may vote at Section an d In te rna t iona l level. They suppor t the o rgan iza t ion with their dues, and in the U.S. an d C a n ad a they suppor t their Section th ro u g h the $3.00 per year per m em ber. At the present t ime however, one must have been a m em ber for two years before being allowed to become an Affiliate member.

N ow we have com e to Support ive , a classification som e have indicated they dislike. W hat is the difference between Active a n d Support ive? Active holds a current pi lot certif icate as defined by the governing body o f the cou n try in which she resides. Suppor t ive does not. Oddly enough , only nine Ninety-N ines m ust fall in to the Active C lassif ication ,—those nine who serve on the In terna tiona l Board o f Directors. All o thers , with the exception o f new m em bers , acco rd ing to o u r cu rren t Bylaws, m ay be Suppor t ive and hold any C h a p te r o r Section office; may vote at all levels; an d m ay be Delegates a t C onvention . T o sum it u p — m em bers in bo th c lassif ications have identical privileges with the excep tion o f being eligible to serve on the In te rn a ­t ional Board. S o m e Ninety-N ines have suggested do ing aw ay with the two classif ications by asking m em bers who wish to serve on the In terna t iona l Board to prov ide p ro o f o f currency. W hat do you th ink?

TCAs + PCAs = Big MoneyBy Joan

What ever happened to N P R M 78-19 you ask? Mr. Bond is s trangely silent on the subject. However, judg ing from a slip o f the tongue by a gen tlem an from the F A A a t one o f t h e “ i n f o r m a l m e e t i n g s ” r e g a r d i n g expans ion o f the C hicago T C A , the PC A will be d ropped from the present 18.000 ft. to12.500 ft. The slip occured when he stated tha t the F A A wanted to raise the ceiling of the Chicago T C A from the present 7.000 ft. to 12.500 ft. “ to meet the f loor o f the PC A ”.

Now, the lowering o f the P C A floor to12.500 ft. isn’t going to b o th er most o f us in o u r flying. But, c o m b in e t h a t w ith the p roposed prol iferat ion o f T C A s an d the raising of the T C A ceilings and you 've got a prob lem of energy and economics.

Pa rt o f the title o f a D O T FA A h a n d o u t at the Chicago T C A meeting reads, “ Finding o f No Significant Im p ac t”. It reads, in part, “Certa in fuel co n su m p tio n increases may be expected to result from the joining of the TCA ceiling with the lowered f loor o f the con tro l area. These impacts a n d related costs would occur because n o n pa r t ic ipa ting V F R a ir ­craft would be required to c ircum navigate the T C A and could no longer overfly it. However, — the FA A has de term ined that these increases can be reduced th ro u g h the use of fuel efficient bypass a irways — and A T C a c c o m m o d a t i o n o f a i r c r a f t w here w ork load permits fo r those a ircraft with the required e qu ipm en t." F u r th e r on it states, " A d d i t i o n a l fuel re q u ire d fo r d iv e rs io n a round the proposed T C A s will to ta l ab o u t 'A mill ion gallons annually . — At the curren t (Jan . ’79) price o f gasoline, these diversions would add $420,000 to general avia tion operat ing costs."

Flying from Green Bay, WI to Louisville, KY. divert a ro u n d M ilwaukee T C A , ex tra fuel required (according to FA A s tables) 34 gallons; divert a ro u n d C hicago T C A — no statist ics available: divert a ro u n d In d ian a ­polis TC A 13 gallons: and o f course there is a proposed Louisville T C A in which you would be using ex tra fuel as you are diverted within the T C A . There you have an extra 48+ gallons for your trip. And, if y our a v ia ­tion fuel prices have been skyrocketing like ours in the Midwest you know tha t last J a n u a r y ’s estim ate o f $420,000 ex tra fuel costs has p robab ly been increased by a bou t one fourth .

W hat can we d o ab o u t it? Pester your FA A regional office’s Airspace and Proce­dures Branch, Air Traffic Division till you find o u t w h e re a n d w h en y o u r a r e a ’s “ informal a irspace m eeting" will be (or was) held. Attend these “ inform al meetings". Ask pertinent questions. Write y o u r com m ents down. Protest if the meeting was a lready held and you d idn 't know a b o u t the meeting, by writing Mr. R ay m o n d C. Finnen. Our Flying A dventureWhat m akes a youngster bubble with

excitement? Ask a child ab o u t his o r her first a irp lane ride and you'll know immediately! My Special Education class and a second grade class found out how thril ling how fascinating being up in the air really is.

Because o f my involvement with (lying, my kids asked me a lot o f quest ions a bou t my hobby. Since they were so inquis it ive and interested. 1 planned a 6-week mini-course to in troduce to them the world of flying. To begin the learning process, we talked abou t why an a irp lane flies. Much ol the in fo rm a­tion and simplified dem o n s tra t io n s I used came from “ D em o n s tra t io n Aids for Avia­tion E du ca tio n . ’" published by the FAA. One o f the dem ons tra t ions , which impressed the 32 youngsters, m ade use o f a square fan w ith strips o f paper taped a long the top . The a ir tha t rushed over and under the “wings" made them flutter upward! W eta lked a little ab o u t the propert ies o f air. a n d sent off helium balloons to show why a blimp stays up in the air. To the ba lloons, we a ttached cards s ta ting our purpose for the ascension and w ho to con tact in case the balloon was found.

Next, we m ade o u r own paper airplanes, decora ted them, and had a flying contest . Using a paper clip in various positions, we tested the flight capabilities of o u r flying creations. After learning why and how an a irp lane flies we talked ab o u t its parts . Using the leaflet f rom the FA A entitled “The Main Parts o f an A irp lane ," we talked a b o u t the purpose o f each part. T he instrument panel nex t d iscuss ion . W hile sh o w in g th e m a picture o f a panel which was num bered and labeled. I let them tell what they though t each instrum ent was used for. With a few exceptions, they cam e up with som e excel­lent answ ers . T o b e t te r u n d e r s t a n d the com pass rose, we played a game. A ro u n d a circle in the gym. 1 placed signs every 45° labeled with bo th degrees and direction words. The “ pilot" s tood in the center and ch o o se a “ c o - p i lo t ” to fly in a ce r ta in direction. Each child had a tu rn at being pilot o r co-pilot!

Since we had talked ab o u t things we would see at the a irp o r t , our next step was to look at different types o f planes we might see. (F o r this project, the 99 color ing book , “ L e t ’s G o F ly in g ” w as very he lpfu l . 1 duplicated the pages so each would have a copy.)

Touring the airport and seeing all of the sights was half of the fun.

Before going on our field t r ip to the Seneca Co. A irport , we discussed aspects of safety in the a ir and on the g round . The second section o f “ Let 's Go Flying" is a b o u t safety. We listed these on a char t a n d drew pictures fo r some.

Because we were also going to the F indlay Flight Service S ta t ion , 1 show ed the movie, "W ea th er to Fly.” This gave us an idea o f the ways a pilot can use an FSS. Each one of the s tudents received a w eather chart , which the F S S generously gave me beforehand . We looked at the charts and found ou t what som e of the sym bols meant. In the third section o f the 99 color ing bo o k is found, “C areers in A via tion ," which includes a few pages on the Flight Service Sta tion .

O u r field t r ip to th e a i r p o r t was as fascinating to me as to all the children. Dwight G nepper , Seneca C o u n ty ’s a irpo r t m anager , a r ranged a to u r o f the a irpo r t showing us his S tea rm an , the engine o f a plane, a new Cheyenne, a T o m a h aw k , and finally the a irp lane which the kids would take their first ride in. There were 32 hands in the a ir when 1 asked , “ W h o w ants to go first?" The express ion on each o f their faces after their first t r ip was w o r th a million dollars. I tr ied to c ap tu re this with a polaroid snapsho t o f each n e x t ’to the plane, so they co u ld have a k e ep sak e a n d sh o w th e i r parents. Each also received a certificate which read: My First A irp lane Ride — 1, Tatnmie, left the ear th on Friday, M ay 18. 1979 fo r the first t ime ever. Dwight was my pilot and 1 went up in a Warrior at the Seneca Co. A irpor t in Tiffin, Ohio.

We ended the mini-course by m ak in g a giant m ura l o f Seneca Co. A irpor t which was displayed a t the a irp o r t in Tiffin, Ohio. E v e ry th in g w as well d e p ic te d f ro m the r u n w a y l ig h t s t o “ P i p e r ” , t h e a i r p o r t m a n a g e r ’s dog.

enjoyed the field tr ip and th ough t her family should also experience the thrill. I took each m e m b e r o f h e r fam ily fo r a r ide over g r a n d m a a n d g r a n d p a ’s f a rm , a n d the th an k s I received was well w or th the effort. The letter T am m ie wro te me is so precious in the fact tha t she can spell very few words.

A n o th e r boy, w ho is a foster child, was not allowed to take a ride due to discipline problems. On his b ir thday, late this sum m er,1 plan to surprise him with his first ride. The tears he experienced that day 1 hope will be forgotten . ^

C o n g r a tu l a t i o n s to th e E as t C a n a d a Section for their o u ts tan d in g pe rfo rm ance in Safety E duca tion for 1978-79. Both East and West C a n ad a Sections have improved the ir p e r fo rm a n c e in S a fe ty E d u c a t io n , mainly th ro u g h the efforts o f a very diligent A P T P rogram . Both sections a re to be c o n g ra tu la te d . As you c a n see by the tabulations, the com pet i t ion was close.

In the individual c h ap te r com pe t i t ion , the S a n ta C la ra Valley C h a p te r , S o u th w e s t Section, a re the to p winners with 880.43 points. The San ta C lara Valley C h ap te r , in conjunction with the Golden West C hap te r , are responsible for con d u c t in g four Fea r of Flying Clinics, encom passing an eight week course for each clinic. The po in ts received f o r th e s e i n d iv i d u a l c l in ic s w e re sp l i t between the tw o chapters . Both c hap ters are most deserving o f this recognition.

The same report fo rm will be used for next year, end ing 5-31-80. Please keep this in mind and start collecting y our d a ta now.

The International Luncheon

The In terna tiona l Luncheon sponsored by the Palisades C h ap te r was held T h u r s ­day. Ju ly 19. 1979 in the S tonehenge R oom of the T u r f Inn. Albany, N.Y. du r ing the G o ld e n J u b i l e e C o n v e n t i o n , a n d w as a ttended by over 450 m em bers a n d guests.

The color scheme o f blue and gold was accented on the circular tables o f 10 covered with gold tableclothes con tras ted with blue napkins. The centerpieces o f h a n d -m ad e wooden winged biplanes with gold floral fuselages and blue propellers ad o rn ed each table. Gifts o f personal pocket 1980 diaries with the 99s’ logo, pens, and mini a irp lanes were given by Palisades C h ap te r to all attending.

The app licat ion consists o f app lica t ion form, experience record , eligibility fo rm a n d letter o f r e co m m e n d a t io n from the chapter . Each c hap ter is a llowed one app lican t for every 30 m em bers o r m ajo r p o r t io n thereof. Regardless o f size each c hap te r is allowed at least one applicant . United Airlines Honors Jean F errell

I th o u g h t you might find interesting a recent case which is a little ou t o f the o rdinary . It concerns a pilot w ho sued the U .S . G o v e r n m e n t , u n s u c c e s s f u l l y , f o r injuries received, on the basis th a t m is lead­ing in fo rm at ion on an ae ronau tica l char t caused his Piper Seneca to crash off an a irpo r t runway. The pilot c on tended th a t he was unable to de te rm ine from the sectional that the longest runw ay at the a irp o r t was not the lighted runw ay and tha t the shor te r runw ay did not have lighting on its full length.

In defending its position, the G ov e rn m en t argued tha t the sectional was published accord ing to specifications which requ ire the a irpo r t name, elevation, runw ay length and lighting. R unw ay lighting was defined as tha t “system o f lighting which defines the usable runw ay surfaces, including runw ay an d th re s h o ld l ig h t s . " F u r th e r , l ig h t in g which is in o pe ra t ion from sunset to sunrise is indicated by an L on the m ap , and tha t is th ough t to be sufficient.

The Defense went on to explain th a t the d e v e l o p m e n t o f c h a r t s p e c i f i c a t io n s is classified as a "d iscret ionary fu n c tio n " o r one where an agency o r person has the freedom to act as he “sees f i t , " a n d one which is generally im m une from suit.

The pilot a t tem pted to prove tha t the principle o f im m unity should no t en te r into this case because the G overnm en t has a du ty when it prepares ae ronau tica l char ts to warn of a “life endangering peril .” However, the C ourt did no t agree with the pilot an d found against him.

Perhaps the lesson to be learned here is th a t p re -f l igh t p r e p a r a t i o n m u s t in c lu d e reference to as m any sources as needed to make a safe and sure flight. W hen one source appears incomplete look elsewhere, and ask questions. Extensive p rep ara t io n takes time but is well spent. 9s

It takes an excep tional person, who, in a d d it ion to their assigned duties, p e rfo rm s o ther needed tasks solely on the basis th a t the jo b needs to be done . Such a person is Je a n Ferrell w ho is a lways willing to carry ou t her assigned task plus any o th e r th a t m ay com e to her a tten tion .

D ur ing the recent United Airlines strike, Jean 's regular assignm ent was the cafeteria m orn ing shift. The ho u rs o f this assignm ent was f rom 0600-1300. U pon com ple tion o f these duties she invariably on her own in i t ia t iv e , has th e n p ro c e e d e d to e m p ty waste baskets , clean rest room s, m o p floors, dust and polish. In add it ion , Je a n recog­nized the T ra in ing C enter 's lawn was in need o f care. With her usual display o f superio r m echanical ap t i tude she quickly mastered the law equ ipm en t. Not only did she m ow an d water the lawn bu t she applied a m uch needed app lica t ion o f fertilizer.

J e a n w as adv ised t h a t C a p ta in C a r ro l l w an ted to see her in his office and tha t p a r t icu la r day was her day off. W hen she a p p e a r e d sh e d id n o t k n o w t h a t th e p resen ta tion would be m ade in the presence o f the employees o f the T rain ing C ente r a lo n g with coffee and cake. W hen you are su m m o n ed to the head office on Friday a f te rn o o n on y our day off, one wonders. It was a p leasant surprise!

Je a n has been a Ninety-N ine for thir teen y e a rs , p re sen t ly a m e m b e r o f the Los Angeles C hap te r . A pilot for m any years, she can boast th a t she has flown m any a irp lanes — Jennys to Jets. She has been employed by United Airlines in Flight O pera t ions for twenty- th ree years. Je a n is checked out, flies, a n d in s t ru c ts on the M c D o n a ld - Douglas D C - 10 a irp lane and holds an FA A C h e ck A i r m a n S ta tu s le t te r fo r F l ight Engineer check rides. She has an ATP, A S M E L , A S E S , G l id e r , C F I , G ro u n d Ins truc tor , Flight Engineer Certificate — T urboje t , and Check Airm an . Je a n was the 51st. female to receive her A T P , and has over 12,000 hours flight time.

Before I begin this en te r ta inm en t , as G ra h am Greene might say, let us exp lore the background material.

As a som etim es next d o o r ne ighbor and long-time friend o f Je rr ie C o b b , the 99s ' missionary jungle pilot, 1 am accustom ed to having Jerrie a p p ea r on my do o rs tep d o w n and desperate. But this was incredible. After an engine over-haul on her tw in-engined Islander, followed by tw o new engines, the cable read:

Engine main hearing failed ai 80 hours.Call Avco. Find Airplane. H om e soonest.Jerrie.

Fo r a bou t th ir ty minutes , I sat in disbelief.But there it was in black on white. A nd not to be ignored. Finally I pulled myself together and telephoned A vco-Lycom ing in W illiamsport, Pennsylvania. I asked for Peter G oodw in , Vice President and General Manager.

Mr. G oodw in is the sterling individual who had a rranged for one free engine and a second new engine at a special price for Je r r ie ’s p lane a year ago. I w ondered if I were ab o u t to go to the well once to o often. But Mr. G oo d w in c o u ld n ’t have been nicer. The w arran ty was in force and Mr. G oodw in would personally a r ran g e for a new engine to be sh ipped a ir express to Miami, Florida.

Now to find an airplane. I phoned everyone I knew w ho owned a twin-engined aircraft . If you would like to hear ab o u t seventeen excuses on ‘W hy 1 c a n ’t fly my a irp lane to the A m a z o n , ’ 1 can give th em to you. I was getting d o w n and ou t myself.

By then, Jerr ie and R uth L um m is had com e dragging in to M o o re Haven, F lor ida f rom d o w n south , having h i tch-hiked out of the jungle on a passing DC-3 loaded with 2000 em pty beer bottles.

“ I’m p robab ly no t going to have an a irp lane , if 1 d o n ’t get back d o w n there fas t ,”Jerrie said wearily. “The plane 's really in the b o o n d o ck s . .

“ Fear n o t , ” said the intrepid believer in s u c c e s s - i s - ju s t -a ro u n d - th e -c o rn e r . “ T h e eng ine ’s all set .” I told her a b o u t the m arvelous Mr. G o o d w in a n d the fantast ic people at Avco-Lycom ing. "As fo r the a irp lane, I ’m w ork ing on it.”

“ Keep trying. R u th and I’ll b o r ro w a truck a n d go d o w n to Miami, b ring the engine to Clewis ton a n d get it uncrated . M aybe you can find an a irp lane by then ."

" I ’ll do my best ,” I promised. W ith tha t , 1 set to flipping th ro u g h the file cards o f my m em ory banks. Inspired, I rem em bered Jerrie had to ld me not so long ago th a t Lois Fe igenbaum had said to her, “ A nytim e 1 can help you, ju s t call .” 1 p h oned Lois.

Would you believe these four ladies changed an airplane engine in the heart of the Amazonas jungle single-handedly? Probably not, but they did. Posing for a group portrait before departure are (L-R) Jerrie Cobb, Ruth Lummis, Miriam Davis. Betty Wright and her 49'/?er, Bill, who opted for civilization and did not make the trip.

Lois a n d her hu sb an d were leaving a lm ost immediately for Europe. “ We'll be back on the 4th o f July. 1 could be there the day after th a t ."

My spirits soared. “ W onderful! But can 't you th ink o f som eb o d y sooner?” 1 explained th e s p e c ia l c i r c u m s t a n c e s a n d h o w im p o r tan t t ime was.

Like a sho t , Lois responded , “ M iriam Davis. She has a twin Navajo. A nd sh e ’s close. In Miami. M ir iam ’s a real sport . Call her.”

I th an k e d Lois a n d called M iriam.Said M iriam , “ I ju s t re tu rned f rom a three

w eek’s cruise. I’m sick in bed with a cold. The p lan e ’s in A la b am a being painted. W hen do we leave?”

“ You m ean — y o u ’d go?"“ Sure. T he p lane will be back T hursday . I

go to the d o c to r on Friday to prove I 'm well. How a b o u t S a tu rd ay ? ”

“This com ing S a tu rd ay ?"“ It so u n d s like fu n .”Sudden ly I was leading a c h a rm ed life.W hen Jerrie cam e in from M iami, 1 gave

her the glad news. She rang up M ir iam and exp la ined the s i tuat ion in detail. M ir iam was eager to go — still.

M eanwhile , my hu sb an d Bill suggested I p h o n e and invite M ir iam to spend the night with us p r io r to d e p a r tu re f rom nearby C lewis ton A irport . M eanwhile , all the

gasoline t rucks went on st rike and Miriam was w ithou t gas fo r her car. She could not get a visa o r drive to Ft. Lauderda le where the N avajo was hangared . In a plea for help, she called a n d said, “C an you get fifteen gallons o f gas to me so m ehow ?”

R uth and I went out and scrounged a tank of gas for the car plus fifteen gallons of gas in a barre l for Miriam. If 1 failed to get a ticket for speeding the day R u th and I drove to M iam i to rescue M ir iam . I ’m p robab ly safe fo r life.

We had a 3:00 p.m. deadline on M ir iam ’s visa. We sailed up to M ir iam ’s front d o o r at 2:30 p.m., 1 kept the m o to r ru nn ing and R uth ran to the door . The d o o r opened. There s tood a w om an . R u th said, “ Give me your passport . W e’ll be back with the gas."

Fo r tu n a te ly the w o m an was Miriam. W ithout a peep o r protes t , she handed over the passpor t a n d we hit the expressways again , try ing to ou t-d is tance time. We made it into M iami In te rna t iona l Airport at precisely 2:54 p.m.

N ow R uth exceeded all expecta tions . She did the mile in un d e r fou r m inutes and collected the visa, while I coped with a ra d ia to r th a t was p o ur ing w a ter all over the N O P A R K I N G zone in which the car sat. 1 figured to be arrested m om entar i ly . No such luck; and no help with the radia tor .

decided we’d better give M ir iam a call and tell her we would be a bit late with the gas. From the t ru n k o f the car R u th retr ieved the bucket we p lanned to use in filling M ir iam s car f rom the gas barrel and w andered intc Miami In te rna tiona l in search o f w a ter for the car rad ia tor . She was m is taken for a cleaning w o m an by a kindly a irpo r t employee a n d directed to the j a n i to r s store room where it was possible for her to fill the bucket with water.

While this was going on, 1 was chas ing up and dow n the a i rp o r t mall, lo ok ing for a telephone. As 1 drew a bead on a pay phone , a telephone m an would beat me to it a n d rip it from the wall. At las t—a tie. I ta lked the telephone m an out o f one m ore call before he did his duty.

M iriam was very und e rs tan d in g a b o u t the delay. But I had my doub ts . We were fast becom ing a p o o r excuse for calm efficiency.

1 went out to the NO P A R K I N G / o n e to con tem pla te a red-ho t ra d ia to r cap. R u th re turned, bucket in hand , every j a n i to r ’s d ream girl. With the aid o f a shop towel, which R uth just happened to have in herjeans, 1 m anaged to rem ove the rad ia to r cap. We filled the rad ia tor . 1 glanced a ro u n d . Lots of great advice f rom passing travellers. But still no cop. Well, it w a sn ’t a day like a n o th e r day, as W alter C ro n k i te might reverse paraphrase .

We got into the car and were off in m ore ways th a n one. We did m ake it to M iriam s house, though , officially in troduce ourselves and fill her car with gas. She was simply super, but a trifle wide-eyed. 1 tried to leave her with a light touch: “ All those w ho d o not go crazy on this trek will becom e insane. Until to m o rro w !"

N ow then. All I had to do was pack. Som ew here a long the way 1 had looked up to discover myself recruited fo r the trip south.

1 met M ir iam ’s plane in Clewiston. She was dressed dow n for the safari in a D ior blue and white checked g ingham shirt, her first pa ir o f jeans, pale blue to m atch the shirt, and new C hris Evert sneakers, white with yellow tr im to m atch th a t beautiful Navajo.

After a quick sh o p p in g expedi t ion in Clewiston, so th a t M ir iam might acquire a pair o f white ducks, i.e. white jeans, for crew wear on the way d o w n and back, we drove to M oore Haven. We had d inner , t o o k a last ho t bath , until o u r re tu rn , went to bed early and got off the next m orn ing , the new engine secured and riding solidly in the center o f the cabin, M ir iam flying left seat, Jerrie flying right seat, R u th in charge o f t ime keeping, me in charge o f lit ter and w hat cam e to be k no w n as the in fam ous University o f O k lah o m a , G O BIG R E D , th e rm o s , which was filled with ice and grape juice , and leaked inevitably on o u r white ducks,

We were the local curiosity: two planes on the strip. Willing hands were everywhere. We construc ted a t r ipod , the better to use the com e-a long (which we had b rough t a long) to hoist the engine in to place. S o — now all we had to do was get the engine ou t of M ir iam ’s plane, put it on a tab le — what table?—a n old table appeared ou t of now h ere !— and carry the engine on the table to the Islander. Later on, we would reverse

Two planes on the sloppy, red airstrip quickly became the local curiosity.

The heroine of this adventure was Miriam Davis, a 99 from Miami. She even found a little time to entertain a friendly Toucan during her trek into the jungle.necessitating a nightly sc rubb ing o f said d ucks far beyond the no rm . There was a b unch of g rousing a b o u t my G O BIG R E D therm os, b u t 1 d o n ’t give in easily.

S o there we are a t last, hav ing crossed the A ndes on a day so beautiful we could see forever, a t a Wycliffe M iss ionary a irs tr ip on the fringes o f the A m azon . I s tepped off the plane carry ing my th e rm o s an d the first person 1 saw was wearing a University o f O k la h o m a sweat shirt. Vindication!

Here we left o u r white ducks behind and prepared for the real thing. We d ep ar ted the Wycliffe a irs tr ip early the nex t m orning. As the sun crawled up over the intense low laying h u m id i ty , s t e a m sp i ra le d u p w a r d in m o u n tin g eddies, as if som eone had set a million small fires in the dense jung le below; and all o f it was laced togethe r by m aze of rivers. R e m a rk ab le to the eye, beautiful to the mind, bu t reeking o f D a n te ’s fr ightening inferno.

O u r des t ina t ion was Mitu (me-too), C o lom bia . M itu is s i tuated 1 degree n o r th o f the e q u a to r , clinging to the banks o f the b ro ad Rio Vaupes. The a irs tr ip is s loppy red clay with a hill for a sp r ingboard . As we circled to land, we could see J e r r ie ’s p lane below. A cheer went up. M ir iam acquit ted

herself beautifully by m ak ing an ace’s high landing. We piled ou t o f the plane, slogged th ro u g h the mud to Je r r ie ’s Islander and checked for damages .

Every passing Indian had felt called upon to engrave a sym bol o f love and care in the pa in t o f her plane. O therwise, all was well; a n d t h a t ’s w hat counted .

O u r h o m e in Mitu was D o n a l.igia s Spa- on-the-Vaupes, an eight ro o m oasis in the jung le wilderness, built a ro u n d a small cour tya rd com ple te with a pa rro t that constan tly scream ed, “ Chocolaia!" The frosting on the chocolaia. though: each tiny ro o m at D o n a Ligia’s had tw o single beds separa ted by a table with a candle on it. These were truly de luxe a cco m m o d a t io n s fo r A m azonas . We settled in and prepared to get on with the w ork at hand.

Sa tu rd ay m orn ing was a repeat o f Friday, great layers o f fog concealed the buildings across the street and the sky looked as if it was ab o u t to d u m p buckets o f w a ter on the pilots and co-pilots as, they boarded the comical bus to participate in the 4th Annual Buckeye Air Rally. Twenty aircraft were registered, m any w ho had flown the Rally, on previous years re turned, but at im pound only 16 a ircraft m ade it to M etca lf Field, Toledo, Ohio. The weather kept two at home, one had bellied in a week before the Rally, and two Toledo men. who had been prom ised an a irp lane, were refused at the last minute. Despite, efforts o f the Rally officials a n d c o n te s ta n t s , the tw o were unable to rent an a ircraft which had been promised.

Any speed o r proficiency cross-country is a lot o f work. The C h a irm a n . Jeane Wolcott and the tw o Vice-chairmen M argret Bryant and Bev Hirzel sta rted the ball rolling in Ju ly , 1978. M argret busied herself with inco rpora t ing and Bev. w ho lives in Toledo, had the j o b of bringing the entire Rally together.

It was decided tha t this year the public would be invited, not only to view the t ak e ­off and fly-by, but to partic ipa te in a Paper Airplane Contest. The event was open to all ages and were g rouped accord ing to age. T r o p h ie s w e re d e s ig n e d a n d m a d e by Margret, plus a couple o f t rophies left from two years ago were aw arded to the different winners. M argret p rocured patches from different com panies so that every kid. young and old. would take hom e "something".

The pilots and co-pilots arrived at M etcalf all day on Friday. Their a ircraft a n d pilot certificates were verified and then they were wisked away to the Perrysburg , Holiday Inn. A pi lo ts’ briefing was held at 8 p.m. that evening at which time the Rally rou te was revealed.

The pu rpose o f the Rally, as the Rules and Regulations read, is to p ro v id e th e pilot with the o p p o r tu n ity to test his flying and naviga­tion skills in a cross-country rally. The m oans were loud and c lear as the pilots learned tha t the first a irp o r t was not on the chart! All the a irports were grass strips and in flat Ohio are hard to find if the pilot has not been practic ing pilotage and navigation. T h e e v e n in g e n d e d w i th a n A t t i t u d e A d jus tm ent h o u r after the briefing.

S a tu r d a y m o rn in g , b re a k fa s t a t 0630, weather briefing and then at 0800 everyone climbed a b ro ad the d u m p t ruck (bus). It should be m entioned a t this t ime tha t the American Legion was m eeting in Toledo an d th e i r t en a c i ty m u s t be a d m i r e d . It seemed they partied all night and each pilot swears it was out side of his door! I n o r d e r t o

let the Legionaires know th a t the pilots were leaving, the bus circled the motel with siren blaring, a t ru s ty ’ “ Hi ho. Silver!” and rode off in to the fog with stra ins of: “To the D um p! To the D u m p !" hanging in the air.

The weather finally b roke enough to give the Rallyers 1.0 0 0 and 3 ,a n d take-offs began a round 1100. The last p lane moved up to the sta r ting line and Official S ta r te r , 49'/$er Dick Taylor ju m p e d in to serve as co-pilot for 99 Lois. A ro u n d a h o u r later, 99s M arion Jayne a n d daugh te r , Pat were back. The crew was se rved l e m o n a d e while they finished up their pap er work. M arion just shook her head, it seems the first a irp o r t was illusive a n d the rules were to circle to the right and go back “ You must find & fly the a i rp o r t”.

In the m eantim e, the Paper A irplane C o n t e s t h a d s t a r t e d . T h e tw o Z o n t a organ izat ions f rom Toledo had set up their food bars, one for the pilots and workers , and a n o th e r for the c rowds. 99 Salley Berry- hill had established her W ays and Means table and also ba lloons a n d soft d r in k s were available.

As the a ircraft re tu rned , 99 Pat Collier, Chief Timer, and her crew were kept busy trying to keep the t im ing line clear for the fly-by. Dick K e tte rm an , Chief o f the Toledo Tower, had bo rrow ed a m obile tower from the Air National G u a rd , Toledo Express, and had it m anned with T ow er o pera to rs Carol Racine and R on Gettig.

At 1321 hours , the S tea rm an , flew the t im ing line but three planes were still out.

O n e w as 99 C o n n i e a n d 4 9 '/Ser J im McConnell . After the S tea rm an had shut dow n . Bill B ohannan . said he had seen the M cC o n n e ll ’s heading east as he flew west, “They must have missed the first a irp o r t !" N o t l o n g a f t e r t h a t C o n n i e a n d J i m ap peared on the horizon. Also Lake Erie 99 D o n n a Fulks and 49!6er J im were still out as were Francis Wright and his wife, Barbara. Both finally landed with Francis having had bo th radios fail. All the planes were safely back.

Z o n ta served delicious sandwiches and Chief Ju d g e Rose Burchett ad jou rned with Sally Brockm an, M arcia G re en h a m and lone Shelton to a quiet ro o m to determine the winners. Dick T aylor started the Spot and Sh o r t field land ing contests. These events were open to an yone with a pilots license. Even to the extent tha t two Breezy's were permit ted to jo in the fun.

A ro u n d 6 p.m. the winners had been de te rm ined and there was jus t t ime to hurry to the motel, shower, and dress for d inner and cocktails.

The g ro u p w h o partic ipa ted in the 4th A nnua l Buckeye Air Rally was a very special one. They were good sports, especially since the course was extremely difficult. It told us m a n y th in g s . N a v ig a t io n skills m u s t be better honed, as well as pilotage. Slow planes have as good a chance to win as the fast ones and in som e cases, better. But the Rallyers, are the ones w ho m ake a cross­c oun try a success o r failure by their spo r tsm ansh ip , cam arade rie an d skills.

Before a c rowd o f family, friends and Clevelanders, the racers crossed the finish line at Burke L ake fron t A irport between 1:30 a n d 2:30 p .m . on A u g u s t 25, as scheduled. Fog delayed the s tart f rom Santa M onica only one h o u r and only a few e n c o u n te r e d w e a th e r p r o b le m s o v e r the route.

$10,000 in cash prizes were presented at the aw ards ban q u e t by Gilbert S ingerm an , President o f the Cleveland N a t iona l Air Show , S p o n so r o f the event, an d trophies were presented by Albert S o lo m o n . Presi­d e n t o f t h e N a t i o n a l E x c h a n g e C lu b , sponsor o f the original race in 1929. Blanche Noyes regaled all with h u m o ro u s tales o f learning to fly and her pa r tic ipa tion in the original derby af te r which bo th Blanche and M a ry V on M a c h were p re se n te d w ith plaques c o m m e m o ra t in g the 50th ann iv e r­sary of their par t ic ipa t ion in the 1929 race.

Leg prizes p rovided by booste rs f rom the cities of San Diego, El C en tro , Yum a, El Paso , Kansas City, East St. Louis a n d Terre Hau te were also presented to those con tes­tan ts f inishing with the highest scores over various rou te segments.

The Hughes Airwest Air Race Classic

The A w ards Banquet of the Hughes Air- west Air Race Classic was held T hursday evening, Ju n e 21, 1979, as scheduled. T hat was p robab ly the only pa r t o f the W o m e n ’s Air Race on schedule. Fog in San ta M onica, Ju n e 16th, delayed the take-off 2 hours , 16 minutes. Over the next five days the 59 p lanes g r a d u a l ly w o rk e d th e i r way to S tock ton . Calif.; K lam ath Falls. Oregon; W alla W alla . W a s h in g to n ; G re a t Falls , M ontana ; Sheridan , W yoming; Bismarck, N o r th D a k o ta ; M in n e a p o l i s , M in n e so ta a n d f in a l ly by 12:00 n o o n . T h u r s d a y deadline, to M ilwaukee Wisconsin. The race had been extended from the 5:00 p.m., Tuesday deadline, three t imes fo r a to ta l of 34 add it ional hours . The reason — you nam e it — fog, rain , th u n d ers to rm s , hail, to rnadoes , and snow. Despite the perils, 54 planes safely reached Milwaukee. There w e re n o a c c id e n t s , o n ly t h e e x p e c t e d m echanical difficulties and a couple that may have jus t given up.

In Milwaukee the scorers an d judges w orked frantically . Instead o f the usual day and a ha lf to finalize the scores, they had ab o u t 5 o r 6 hours.

The Way It Was

"W hen we were in Walla Walla. WA. headed for Great Falls. M T in o u r little Cessna 172, and we had to tu rn a ro u n d and come back because o f the violent storm s, th a t ’s when 1 s ta r ted to th ink we c o u ld n ’t make it at a ll ," said E leanor R uby M oon.

But m ake it they did. M o o n and Claire Lee W alte rs (b o th P a lm s C h a p te r 99s) placed th ird in the Hughes Airwest Air Race C la s s ic , f r o m S a n t a M o n i c a , C A to Milwaukee, Wl.

“ W e e n c o u n t e r e d s n o w , s l e e t , h a i l , t r e m e n d o u s w in d s , t h u n d e r s t o r m s a n d to rn ad o es ," said M oon. “The tu rbu lence was so bad all the way, I never took my hands off the contro ls . I was really scared and Claire was jus t si t ting there tak ing pictures."

Because o f the h a za rd o u s weather, the race was ex tended three t imes and because of a t rem endous tai lwind, their little Cessna at times went over 175 m.p.h. Said Claire, “ We went so fast, we left the num bers behind! In fact, if any p lane passed us and waggled their wings, we jus t smiled and waved. We d id n ’t w an t to lose even a second of time. We were to ld we really had to w ork hard at m aking th a t little plane go .”

Flying th rough the Rockies between 8 and 9,000 feet, a ccord ing to Claire , “ We stayed undernea th the overcast and went th ro u g h the canyons. It was great. Som eone followed us for 100 miles. She said we were right on course.”

T h e c o u n t r y a l o n g th e c o u r s e was beautiful, accord ing to M oon. Being an Austra lian by birth , m uch o f o u r c o u n try is still new to her. “G oing in to Walla Walla, as we broke ou t o f the m oun ta ins , there were green fields and the sun was shining. It was r e a l ly p r e t t y . But t h e b e s t p la c e w as Minnesota. I t ’s so beautifu l up there. Som e day I want to go back and take a good look. When the w eather is nice!

“The tailwinds were so t r em en d o u s at M inneapolis ," said M o o n , “th a t we flew more than 200 m.p.h. d u r in g o u r flyby, and in trying to land on the reciprocal runway, we jus t hovered. It was a m az in g !”

Most o f the people a lo n g the way were terrific, according to bo th w om en, especially the o ld - t im ers . In S h e r id a n , W Y th e re weren't any 99s, but there were th ree senior citizens called “cowbelles ." “They didn 't know a th ing ab o u t flying bu t they m ade hotel and d inner reservations for us because they knew we would be tired and hungry when we cam e in late. They were w o n d e r ­ful," both w om en agreed.

Walters and M o o n a re still try ing to catch up on lost sleep. Each m orn ing o f the race they a rose at 4 a .m ., a n d then would have to sit all day long waiting fo r the w eather to

Said E leanor, “ We are thril led to pieces. It was a n in v a lu a b le ex p e r ien c e . I real ly learned alot f rom Claire ."

Both w om en w orked well together. “ In fac t ,” said E leanor , “ Claire would look at the char ts as we flew and say ‘now 1 w onder where we’re going ' and she would ha te to hu rt my feelings if 1 was 5 degrees off. She w o u ld n ’t say any th ing but ju s t wave her hand slightly in the d irection I should be going. Or she would say. 'why d o n ’t you go to a head ing o f such -and-such ' and I would

say, 'why 1 th ink t h a t ’s a good idea .”' Actually, the two o f them pairing up for

Everybody pitched in. O n the really heavy labor, we lifted hardly a finger. The tr ipod fu n c t io n e d p ro p e r ly , the c o m e -a lo n g worked precisely and the engine was ready to hang. So m eb o d y handed M iriam a tool.

Baffled, she asked, “ W hat d o I d o with this?"

Jerrie explained.A flick o f the eyelash and M ir iam -the-

mechanic was t ightening b o l t s , ' safety- wiring, checking spark plugs, the old p ro in action. She kept exclaiming, “ I never did any th ing like this before and I can do it!”

Six d a y s p assed , six h o t , s t icky , u ncom fortab le , sun-sh in ing-dow n, rainy days. T he engine was on. We moved the table over to the Islander 's d oor ; the natives wrestled the old engine out o f the plane and on to the table; they, then , carried the tab le to the Navajo and shoved the engine inside. Now for the test.

Jerrie fired up the new' engine on the Islander. It ran! Jerrie decided to test fly the Islander. The Islander didn 't fall out o f the sky! Success . . . How sweet it was!

college songs and she even let me sing B O O M E R S O O N E R , despite the in fam ous therm os. She led us on an exped it ion o f the Pink D o o r Sa loon and Disco, as we called it, where one could buy w arm beer for a buck a bottle a n d enjoy the music, a tired a n d lonely h an d-cranked record o f “ Here Comes the Bride." She assisted valiantly in the laundry we ran, where we were try ing to keep clean as well as dry, and frankly no th in g ever dried; dress down D ior to o k a real beating! M eanwhile , she played hostess at late a f te rn o o n coffee klatches by enhan c in g the occasions with snacks car ted from ho m e via the old kit bag. She was, in essence, equal to any th ing , the Perle M esta of the A m azon . But Miriam 's finest h o u r was waiting in the wings.

We were rush ing to get off before a n o th e r th u n d e rs to rm broke. R u th was to fly with M iriam and I was to fly with Jerrie. Je rrie a n d 1 to o k off first, since the Is lander is so m uch slower th an the Navajo. Back in M ir ia m ’s plane a little scene was being played out, which would test M ir iam ’s mettle. R uth called ou t to A lberto , D ona Ligia’s son, w ho had guarded the a irp lanes each night we were there, “ Is the p i tot cover off?" R u th pointed a finger fo r emphasis.

They assum ed he m eant , “ O k a y .” M iriam taxied into posi t ion and to o k off.

As Jerrie and 1 headed for a strip on the Rio G u a v ia re —Jerr ie had fuel stored th e re—the s to rm struck with a vengeance. Then , cam e a radio c o m m u n ica t io n from Miriam. “ N o a i r s p e e d . I’ve got to go a ro u n d a n d l an d .”

Swiftly Jerr ie tu rned back to Mitu, say in g , “ I ’ll nev er fo rg iv e m yse lf , if som eth ing goes w rong on th a t land ing .”

Now M iriam was telling us, “ I ’ve got to m ak e a go a ro u n d . Again. A DC-3 is landing. Head ing right for m e!”

Jerr ie and I glanced at one a n o th e r in disbelief. A irp lanes a re so few and far between a t Mitu, the coincidence o f a DC-3 was incredible.

We arrived on the scene as M ir iam prepared to land. Finally. The runw ay was

jus t d iscernable in the s to rm . But there was M ir iam keeping her cool, using 20 years of experience to the hilt, execu ting the perfect landing.

After M ir iam taxied off the strip, we landed for a conference. Ruth was busily rem oving the p i tot cover and M iriam was ready to t ry once more!

The flight to the Rio G uaviare strip was som etim es 1FR, but we found the strip and landed, M ir iam right behind us, equal to a s tr ip th a t o thers might have shunned at any cost. We refueled J e r r ie ’s plane and jo u rneyed on w ard to a T u ca n o Indian village near the Brazilian border, t o o k baths in the beautiful waterfalls o f the Rio Paca, cooked d in n er over the T u can o ch ie fs fire— S p am and cream ed co rn from M ir iam ’s old kit b ag —slept in ham m ocks , and the following m orn ing tu rn ed to w ard s home.

In 20 days, we flew across d is tant oceans, above towering m oun ta ins , over endless jungle , helped to change an engine in a good cause and returned.

As we said our farewells, 1 to ld Miriam. " Y o u ’re to o m uch!”

She grinned and winked. “ But when did you ever have so much fun?"

She also had the task o f providing 99s to escort the distinguished guests to their respective place on the p la tfo rm for the Open ing Day Ceremonies. T here were US Senators , C ongressm en, an a s t r o n a u t , H a r ry R e a s o n e r a n d h igh ran k in g officers f rom the US and foreign countries . The escorts had the o p p o r tu n i ty to explain to the escortee a b o u t the 99s who were bo th surprised and pleased to learn w om en to o k a part in every aspect of avia t ion . Also d u r in g the air show, the co m m e n ta to r gave a th o ro u g h briefing on the b a ckground o f the 99s. This was televised on W H IO -T V , w ho in troduced the 99s to th o u san d s of people w ho might never have know n a b o u t the o rgan izat ion . The All-Ohio 99s m an n ed the C o m m u n ic a t io n C ente r , Lost and F o u n d and sold tickets. All-Ohio Salley Berryhill and friend. Ken, to ld the s tory o f f inding a 2 year old and keeping h im from 2 to 6 and then tu rn ing him over to the M o n tg o m ery police when they closed the boo th . It seems th a t the family was cam p in g a t the Fa ir a n d an o lder b ro th e r was supposed to watch him. The o lder b ro th e r fell asleep and the 2 year old slipped away. The paren ts were unaw are th a t he was lost! The family was reunited late th a t evening. Also $1,000 w o r th o f cam era equ ipm en t was lost and tu rned in. Salley fo u n d the ow ner w ho ne ither asked for the nam e o f the individual w ho tu rn ed it in or even offered a reward . People a re funny!

Rain did not dampen the spirits or slow the work of A ll-O h io Barbara Deeds and Rosanne Defibaugh as they paint "Fairfield County" in 5'x9' letters. Son, Toni Deeds was the only helper. The men of the Fairfield County Pilots Association were supposed to help, but most didn't get themselves moving until it was almost finished.

T h ey were delighted to see the likes o f Jerr ie C o b b and all the o thers who stopped a t St. Louis. W eather, as usual, was a bit doub tfu l , so s e v e r a l o f t h e g a l s s t a y e d o v e r n i g h t Thursday , and got a n early s ta r t ou t o f here on Friday. T r u ly a fun bunch o f w om en, and a joy to handle.

Most o f o u r projects fo r the next two years will be involved with rais ing m oney for the 1982 C onvention . In th a t a rea , we wish to advise tha t Vi Blowers of the All-Ohio C hap te r , won the w eather m o n i to r radio we've been selling raffle tickets for, since the Spring Section meeting at M BS. O ur chief sales lady, Dott ie H aup t , will take the radio to Vi at the Fall Sectional in D avenpor t . The d raw ing for the rad io was held at our Insta lla tion Luncheon . S a tu rd ay , August 25th. On Sep tem ber 15th, we will have a plane wash at Weiss Airport to try to increase the a m o u n t w e’ve a lready a c c u m u ­lated, th an k s to Dott ie selling everyth ing but 49'/$er Elmer, and she’s a lady w ho w o n ’t take “no", fo r an answer!

A highlight o f the su m m er flying season for the M inneso ta 99s was their partici­pa tion as local sponsors o f the Hughes Airwest Air Race Classic. The 2562.62 mile a ir race began a t San ta M onica, CA on June 16 a n d concluded in M ilwaukee on Ju n e 21. As local sponsors , M inneso ta 99s acted as official race timers in M inneapo l is ’ Flying C loud Tower, the last spo t check before Milwaukee.

P o o r w e a th e r c au sed d e lays fo r race p a r t i c ip a n ts , b u t sp ir i ts a n d e n th u s ia sm were high as 39 race pilots stayed overnight in M inneapolis the last night o f the race. M inneso ta 99s were particularly p roud that two o f their own m em bers , Cheryl R yan and Vicky K nudson . com ple ted the race.

In the past year th rough o u r 3e-a-pound airlift and refresh­m ent s tands a t the L iverm ore Air S how in 1978 a n d 1979 we m a n a g e d to r a is e a p p ro x im ate ly $2,000 to be directly pu t back in to our sponso rsh ip o f Air Age E duca tion

a c t iv i t ie s a n d S a fe ty P ro jec ts . We have c o n t in u o u s ly s u p p o r t e d T e n n y s o n High S ch o o l ’s av ia t ion class in Hayward , CA taugh t by 99 Francis G ibson. We have provided funds for several field trips and o th e r activities tha t would not have been p oss ib le w i th o u t o u r help . We recen tly d o n a ted $180 to the class to defray the cost o f insurance for the s tu d e n ts ’dem o n s tra t io n rides, a cost not able to be covered this year by the school budget. Also o u r c hap ter has a lready c on tr ibu ted $60 to O hlone College's Aviation D e p ar tm en t fo r help in setting up an N IF A c h a p te r—this in the fo rm o f a m atch ing f u n d —we put up $1.00 for every $1.00 the s tudents raise up to a m ax im um a m o u n t . H o w e v e r , o u r l a r g e s t s in g le co n tr ib u t io n to da te has recently been made in the fo rm o f o u r c h a p te r ’s first scholarship for flight training. At a ban q u e t p r io r to our chap te r meeting in July, we bestowed a $400 aw ard to E d m u n d o P a n d u ro , a so p h o m o re at T ennyson High. As o u r first scholastic honoree, E d m u n d o had qualit ies tha t far- outweighed all o th e r students . Since he is only a so p h o m o re , he was not eligible for the college scholarships tha t several senior men a n d w o m e n r e c e iv e d to f u r t h e r t h e i r educa tion in avia tion. His merit for our aw ard is unchallenged. He impressed his av ia t ion class teacher at T ennyson High, Francis G ibson, all year long for he always had the correct answer to any quest ion and

A happy af te rm a th o f this story is tha t when he was in troduced to the FBO w ho would be giving him his t raining, he was offered a jo b to help earn m oney and flying time. We are very h a p p y to a n n o u n c e th a t E d m u n d o has soloed recently a n d is ready for his first dua l cross-country. When we see such d ram atic results ob ta ined th ro u g h o u r assistance, we are all very p ro u d to be a 99. As a postscript. D r . R a y m o n d G a l l a g h e r , lo ca l F A A Medical Exam iner, don a ted the cost of E d m u n d o ’s physical exam for his medical certificate.

On July 29, A lam eda C o u n ty C h ap te r again set up a refreshm ent b o o th at the Livermore Airshow. This year the a t te n ­dance o f the general public was three times th a t o f last year or so it seemed, a n d the tem pera tu res were very hot. Ninety-Nines, family m em bers a n d 49'/4ers helped serve 64 gallons o f lem onade, 1500 ice c ream bars, 12 dozen d o n u ts a n d several coffee-makers full o f coffee. As usual it was a lot o f fun seeing the c rowds o f people w ho e n jo y .av ia t io n functions and serving them. The n u m b er o f families with children was very indicative of the "family” appea l o f such a n a irshow. We were pleased to be able to offer refresh­ments. O n a hot day it is hea r t -w arm ing to see little red faces appeased by ice c ream o r l e m o n a d e . M o s t o f th e m a te r i a l s were c o n t r ib u t e d by v a r io u s m e r c h a n t s f ro m Livermore, H ayw ard and O akland . One new part of o u r bo o th this year was Ohlone College studen ts who had m ade m inia ture ceramic a irp lanes to sell a n d raise m oney for their N1FA chapter .

D ue to adverse w eather forecast for the San Gabriel Valley the d ep ar tu re was moved up one day earlier th an p lanned and the first night was spent in Apple Valley. T he second d a y ’s flight to o k th em to A lb u q u e rq u e , New M e x i c o w h e r e t h e g r o u p s t a y e d w i th relatives o f one o f the pilots in a R ocky M o u n ta in cabin a few miles from A lb u q u e r ­que.

The following day b ro u g h t th em to a

sm o o th landing in C o lo rad o Springs, where the Scouts eagerly looked forward to their stay at the fam ous Air Force Academy and to meeting the o th e r Aviation Explorers. There were posts f rom all across the country including a post from Alaska and a post f rom the Virgin Islands.

There were a myriad o f events planned with included seminars on crash survival, wind tunnel experiments . Aero, Medicine, Civil ian Pilot careers and sail p lane and sport pa rach u tin g observations. There were also flight s im ula tors and academ y to u r and a p resen ta tion by the pilots of the Double Eagle II.

The Scouts were particularly impressed by the D oub le Eagle II p resentation , the N A S A presen ta tion , the Almost Anything Goes com pet i t ion and the Casino Nite where the Explorers accum ula ted a grand tota l of $12,000 w or th o f N a tiona l Explorer Fly-In D o l la rs . T h e re w as a lso a d isco d an ce Sa tu rd ay night, and a particularly impres­sive closing ceremony.

Santa Clara Valley C elebrates 25th A nniversary

We ch o se to keep o u r A nniversary celebrat ion low key and found the p leasant answer by com bin ing it with a luncheon for the Pacific Air Race first day drawing.

Nancy Rodgers m ade a r rangem en ts with the Le Baron Hotel in San Jose. Willy G ard n e r used her call igraphic skills to make personal invita tions tha t were mailed by Stella Leis to all m em bers who jo ined during the first year (Ju ly 1954-July 1955).

Greetings f rom Kenya! We seem to be still flying (except for one m o n th when fuel was strictly ra tioned) , but we are not being ra tioned again , and expect to run ou t of Avgas late O c tober , if no m ore supplies arrive. We hope for the best, a n d keep in the a ir as m uch as possible.

Denise M o rch an d -H o lz is still m anaging the Flying School here, and doing a lot of i n s t r u c t i o n . S h e h a s tw o I n s t r u c t o r ’s ra tings—an F A A one, and an East African one, and on the latter, they only give you an Assistant In s t ru c to r ’s R a ting until you 've done 200 hours instruct ion and pass a check- ride. She's d one th a t , and now can send students on first solo and first solo c ross­c o u n t r y , a p r iv i l e g e r e s e r v e d f o r fu l l instructors. Also she no longer needs a supervising Full In s t ruc to r on the airfield all the t ime sh e ’s instruct ing to be legal.

More and m ore avia tion jobs a re open ing up to us as the guys push off fo r greener fields elsewhere. A lthough you m ay hear little from us, we are keeping up the Ninety- Nine spirit.

Babs Tuley reports a great experience in flying with M arie Hoefer o f the Long Beach C h a p te r in the Pa lms to Pines race. They were pleased to place 14th. 49!/$er Bud Tuley flew to C a l i fo rn ia w ith Babs a n d was “v o lu n tee red ’’ as a t im er at the K lam ath Falls stop. Babs flew a to ta l o f 6.000 miles, including a d e to u r to S pokane , W ashington and a two-day layover in Douglas, W yo­m in g b e c a u s e o f w e a t h e r . The new year is off to a roaring s tart, our new officers a re officially installed, and what a delightful way to begin! The luncheon at S u n s e t C o u n t r y C lu b was su p e r . Adel Scharr did her usual magnificent jo b of installing the ladies, and o u r guest speaker, George Mills, gave us a really inside look at the trials o f a M cD onne l l F-4 Test Pilot. He followed his speech with a movie o f the Blue Angels do ing their th ing in the F-4s tha t was really b reath taking. New C h a irm an , Gloria Cash , led us to believe there will be many activities in the com ing year so tha t we will be kept plenty busy.

The C h a p te r has enjoyed two wonderfu l years under the leadership of Barb. She has talent galore an d we d o n ’t feel tha t we have even scratched the surface of her possibilities. She showed this in her first meeting as c h a i rm an o f the 49'/4er m e m b e rs h ip . T h e A u g u s t activity for the men was a fishing derby. No big fish were caught but a few little ones did take the bait . Walt Fa lkenberg won the prize for having the most unique fishing hat. (The prize was a fishing scale and tape measure.) Back to W alt ’s hat. It had no th ing to d o with fishing unless he p lanned to blow the fish out of the water! It had a few M 80’s a long with a carved w ooden Norw eigan Troll as mascot, a beer opener, and a bottle o f Scotch, (miniature). The new officers were installed and the p ro g ram was given by the Civil Air P a t ro l on “ S e a rch a n d S u r v iv a l ” . B arb Gross was presented a C h a i r m a n ’s pin as a gift f rom the chapter .

The unusual par t o f this s tory is tha t her d a u g h te r teaches at a Navajo Indian School in T o h a tch , New Mexico — halfway between Gallop and Ship rock in the middle o f nowhere. She teaches p rob lem learners. Som e o f th em had never been off the reservation a n d d o n ’t really believe there are airplanes. N o rm a writes, "It was qu ite an experience. It was difficult for them to relate, but they were qu ite deligh tfu l.”

C o s tu m e s were hi larious with S tan Blinco and Debbie T om w a l k i n g o f f w i th th e “ Best C o s t u m e ” trophies . This is the 99s’way o f honoring our 49 '/4ers f o r t h e a s s i s t a n c e we rece ive th ro u g h o u t the year.

Greater Seattle

F o u r teen happy flyers from the Greater Se a t t le C h a p te r flew to F r id a y H a rb o r A irport on San J u a n Island, for their July meeting, being met by Je a n T h o m as and her d a u g h te r w h o drove them to the Thom as hom e high a to p a rolling hill, where a picnic lunch (dishes for sam e hav ing been assigned by picnic co -o rd in a to r C aro l C ansdale) was enjoyed by all.

Spanish Peaks

The hom e o f S h a ro n R oush was the site of Spanish Peak 's an n u a l steak-fry in August. Guests were families and s tuden t pilots. H onored on the occasion was A nn Frink; we c e leb ra ted th e off ic ia l d isc h a rg e o f o u r fo rm er W A SP ! J o a n Alyea show ed the slide p resen ta tion on the 1980 C o n v en tio n at Vail th a t was presented at Albany. And the w eather was C AV U!

Lorrie Tunnell and Diane Tunnell had the u n ique experience o f flying a Tiger M oth in Austra lia this sum m er. They also flew a 172

in Sydney. They were very impressed by the g reat visibility.

Long Beach

On Ju ly 23, 1979, Terry L ondon Rinehart gave b ir th to a 9!4 p ound son who has been nam ed Jus t in Michael Rinehart . Terry has been a Western Airlines Pilot since M arch 1976. Her husb an d . As reported by Willy: a lot o f t ime was spent searching out a irpo r ts with 80 oc tane gasoline. They were successful most o f the time. They spent 5 ex tra days in Albany when early m orn ing poor w eather called for a “ no go to d ay " decision. The n u m b er o f cars they had to rent stays in her mind! For tuna te ly the enrou te weather for the three week tr ip was generally good.
