BIG BLUE DAY FUNDRAISER Last Wednesday saw a range of activities held to acknowledge Big Blue Day. This was a day to raise awareness of mental health. An assembly was held where our guest speaker Ellen Clark who is our Network Specialist Centre Facilitator spoke about the importance of maintaining good mental health and set everyone a challenge to do something nice for someone else. This was followed up with an auction of cream pies to be thrown at a select group of teachers and staff to help raise money to support the Channel 4 Change which is being run by Brenda Norman. This proved popular with many students paying handsomely to ‘pie’ their teachers. During lunch there was live music which drew a crowd before students went off into a range of activities in the afternoon. Congratulations to our MAD squad and Tracey Page for the organisation of the day. The events of the day raised over $1,000 which is a fantastic effort by the whole of the school community. TERM 4 EVENTS The next few weeks promises to be a busy time for staff and students. ENGLISH NEWS James Hood, Shannon King, Adrian Mulham, Alex Poka and Bayden Thompson competed in the annual Lions Club debate held at the RSL on Monday 23

rd October. The team put their best foot

forward debating the topic “electronic logbooks should replace paper logbooks.” The boys were given the negative side, initially, considering the topic to be difficult. However, with extensive hours of research over many Lunchtimes, the team settled on the idea of black spots, data usage and viruses affecting the applications. The team took this to mean L-plate drivers, whereas the Lions Club team thought that this meant heavy vehicle drivers. This proved to be an interesting topic, as there were two different arguments that were being generated. The team performed well, continuing to tie their arguments back to why we should continue to use paper logbooks. It was because they continued to return that we were able to win the debate. The hard effort that the boys put in over the past few weeks should be commended; they were a credit to themselves and the school. Our classrooms are very busy places currently, Year 10 are revising for their yearly examinations and should be completing this revision in class and at home to achieve the best results possible; reflecting their capabilities. Year 8 and 9 completed their yearly literacy tests this week. Year 7 having completed their yearly literacy test in week two are now busily working on their performance and improvisation skills in preparation for their assessment and the Drama Extravaganza competition. Last week Mrs Ladson and Ms Richards went to Sydney to complete their HSC marking training, for the next few weeks they will be busily marking hundreds of papers from students across the state. Term Four may be a busy one for both students and staff, but we would like to remind all our students that we always have time to discuss a good book with you.

YEAR 11 EXCURSION

The Year 11 students set off on an early start on Tuesday morning, having their first stop in Bendigo at La Trobe University and Bendigo Tafe. The students were toured through the campus to get a feel what uni life looks like. Our journey extended to Geelong’s Deakin University and The Gordon Tafe for students to choose between. We were again toured through the campus with Deakin being a popular option after the tour. On Wednesday students went to places such as Etihad stadium, Nick Theodossi Prestige Cars or Victoria University. Following this we were toured through more university's such as La Trobe Bundoora and then an exciting lunch at Southbank. Later that day students got to enjoy an hour of fun at BOUNCE in Essendon. Thursday was a full on day with students visiting Monash University or Box Hill Tafe. One of the highlights of the trip was was a 2 hour session on Thursday afternoon at trees adventure, where students took their fear or love for heights to the next level. A well needed break was needed so students watched a choice of 3 movies at the Crown Complex. On Friday students got to choose between a graffiti tour directed by our Ms Sinha or Swineburne University. North Melbourne Football Club was later that day, as well as, the Arts Precinct tour and St. Vincent's hospital where students learnt about the careers involved in each. Our final activity Eureka Sky Deck was after lunch in Federation Square. A very tired Year 11 group climbed on the bus once more eager to get home. Overall the trip was a fantastic opportunity to visit numerous Universities, Tafe’s and lots of other career paths available Thank you to the school for providing us with such an exciting excursion. MAD SQUAD On Wednesday 25

th October, our annual Big Blue

Day at Deniliquin High School took place. The MAD Squad raised money to support “Channel 4 Change” and raise awareness of Mental Health in our community. The students rose over $1,000 for the charity on the day. Students were allowed to wear casual clothing for gold coin donation, able to purchase sausage sandwiches, drinks and Zooper Dooper at lunch time as well as participate in the Photo booth. A special assembly was held. Here Ellen Clark, the Network Specialist Centre Facilitator spoke about having positive mental health and what people need to do to maintain strong mental health. Ten teachers and five MAD Squad members were willing to be the targets for the Pie Throwing Auction. The auction rose over $600. The festivities continued at lunchtime with music by John Bowie, Alex Maher, Hayden Kelvy and Jacob Edwards. The boys did an amazing job and it was enjoyed by staff and students. In the afternoon instead of the regular sport, students had the chance to choose a different activity. These activities included: Amazing Race, movies, rocky road and pizza cooking, board games, dodgeball, basketball, drumming workshop and colouring in just to name a few.

GRIP LEADERSHIP A group of year 10 and 11 students travelled to Albury on Wednesday to take part in the GRIP leadership conference. They had a productive day participating in leadership activities, the main focus, “Transformation”. They also had the chance to interact in group activities with other schools. All these activities created a team working environment and encouraged leadership development, as the students were thrown into unknown social groups. Throughout the day we made many new friends from schools all across the region. We brought back many ideas to benefit our school and the community. Some of which consisted of leadership within our school, trying to lead from the front to set a standard for the school. Through our session on school pride we can now be looking for the positives in our school and lead by example. Thanks to Ms Leetham and Ms Barker for the emotional support and transport.

CAREERS NEWS CHANGE OF SUBJECT – YEAR 11 Year 11 students who are wanting to drop a subject going in to their HSC studies, will be allowed to do so following the release of their Preliminary Course Reports. Students wishing to make this change will be required to collect a ‘Green Form’ from Mrs Van Lieshout or Mr Astill, complete it with all relevant signatures and then submit it to Mr Astill. All students will be expected to remain within their timetabled rooms until the end of the year, working independently on other content. As of 2018, these periods will become Study periods in the Library. Any student wishing to make a change should discuss this with their parents and relevant teachers before collecting a form. HSC Parent Information Night We will be holding a HSC Information session for all Year 11 students and their parents on Wednesday 15

th November in the Library. The evening will

commence at 6.30 pm and cover issues relating to the school’s expectations of HSC students, HSC assessment procedures and how parents can assist their child to successfully navigate through their HSC year. All parents and students of our current Year 11 are encouraged to attend. FISH PARK Mrs Denny and her band of merry men, aka Year 10 students, have been working away each Wednesday constructing two more fishing platforms for the Fish Park Development. These will be installed later in the month at the Fish Park behind TAFE. This program has enabled the students to be involved in

a community project, learn about the ecology of the lagoon system in Deniliquin and practise their construction skills, often under the watchful eye of Mr Ian Fisher. We thank Mrs Denny and all involved in the project for providing such a valuable learning experience. YES PROGRAM Every Wednesday, since the beginning of Term 4, a group of Year 9 girls have been attending the day at Riverina TAFE participating in a series of workshops from nursing to hairdressing, childcare to automotive. This Wednesday, the students visited Albury TAFE to explore the range of options there. We would like to thank Mrs Dunmore for her tireless efforts in getting the group organised and supervising them at TAFE, and Ms Sinha who stepped in during Mrs Dunmore’s absence.
