ENGLISH NEWS Over the next few weeks, Years 7-10 will complete their final formal assessment tasks and sit their Yearly Exams. All exams will consist of short answer questions to an unseen text, a creative response and an extended response based on the textual form they are currently studying. Year 11 have commenced the HSC course and all classes are currently examining the common module: Texts and Human Experiences. Standard English and English Studies are studying the prescribed text, ‘Go Back to Where You Came From’, while Advanced students are studying, George Orwell’s ‘1984’. The first assessment will involve both the prescribed text and related of the students own choosing. Year 11 Extension 2 students will have an opportunity to attend a study day organised by the State Library in Albury on November 23

rd, where

they will hear from successful Extension 2 students, markers and experienced writers. Please remember that if a student is absent on the day of an assessment or exam they need to see their class teacher the day of their return to submit the task or arrange a follow-up testing day.

On the 22nd

of October, five students competed in the annual Lions Club Debate. This was a challenging and thought-provoking debate, based on whether the five-cent piece should be continued to be minted. The Deniliquin High School team, consisting of Dottie Wilson, Shannon King, Bayden Thompson, Alex Poka and Adrian Mulham. The team gained the Negative case and were tasked with the challenge of coming up with a series of arguments stating why the coin should remain. Discussing the economic factors, the benefits of the coin to charities, the advertisement qualities of the coin and its relevance to the Australian society. Unfortunately, this was an uphill battle, and while the students were credited with their ability to follow the structures of debating, the students did not come away with the win this year. I would like to thank the Deniliquin Lions Club for giving the students an opportunity to be involved actively with the wider community.

YEAR 8 VALID SCIENCE TEST The Validation of Assessment for Learning & Individual Development (VALID) Science test for Year 8 students will be held between Monday 29

th

October and Friday 9th November. This test is

completed online and uses multimedia to test students on their scientific knowledge and skills. It takes approximately 70 minutes to complete. Students will be required to bring their own set of headphones/earbuds to complete the test. Year 8 students from throughout the state complete this test and the students’ results give schools valuable data to use in the assessment of their teaching programs. Individual student reports will be sent out to parents early next year. If your child needs special consideration, please contact Margaret Blake to discuss special provisions or possible exemption from the test. A note containing more details has been sent home with the students.

SRC The SRC has yet another busy term ahead. Our bullying boxes were launched this week, these boxes are a safe and anonymous place for students to report bullying they have been involved with, witnessed or heard about. The boxes will be placed in Henry Street Office and the Admin Building. Students are reminded that bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. It is important that reports are accurate as each will be confidentially recorded and responded to. To conclude Mental Health month, we are holding a Colour Run on the 28

th October held in Memorial

Park and the State Forest. It would be fantastic to see many students and families at this event. 2019 SRC nominations will begin this term, any student who is interested in participating in this fantastic leadership opportunity is encouraged to nominate themselves. SRC does require time commitments, particularly when events are being organised. In the SRC you will learn leadership skills and values which can be used in all aspects of your life. You will learn the process of events management and organisation and develop communication skills for formal and informal settings.

DRIVER EDUCATION COMMITEE I would like to thank, on behalf of the Driver Education Committee the following people for their volunteer efforts at the Ute Muster Breathalyser Tent; Dom Jansen, Janine Godden, Kim Denny, Anne-Maree Hay, Leanne Mulham, Kate Henderson, Diane Pearce (from Swan Hill), Rebecca Hof, Donna Van Lieshout, Jess Grocott, Chloe Rutter and Sherryn Hill. We had a very entertaining weekend and the crowd were very polite and respectful. We were able to raise a total of $4410.75 which will go to providing the year 10 Driver Education students for this year with a free driving lesson with Deni Driver Training. Thus gaining valuable training towards their future safer driving practices. The Ute Muster provides our community with the ability to raise funds for local clubs and committees, we thank them very much. Jenny Fellows Deniliquin High School Driver Education Committee member

CHS GIRLS TENNIS –GOSFORD Eimear Gogarty travelled to Gosford last week after being chosen to represent Riverina in tennis. Being her manager, it was a privilege to take her away and she has represented Deniliquin High School in an excellent manner. She was very courteous on and off the court. This is the second year that Eimear has been selected for this team. In the last 12 months she has improved immensely and showed her fighting spirit on the court. She won 4 of her singles matches and 5 of her doubles matches, well over 60% of her matches. This is a great achievement as she was playing in the number 5 position, often playing girls

who were much older than her. Riverina achieved an overall position of 7

th in the

State (after narrowly missing out by 1 set on 6th

position on a countback). Vicki Breust (Riverina tennis convenor & Riverina girls manager) Temora High School

CAREERS NEWS YEAR 11 MELBOURNE EXPERIENCE For a group of students who set off in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, 48 Year 11’s did a fantastic job to maintain a level of stamina throughout the week that they find difficult to maintain during a week in the classroom! Students kept up with the whirlwind pace that is the Year 11 Excursion! They displayed their best country kids behaviour and demonstrated the school’s core values of respect, responsibility and co-operation. We covered hundreds of kilometres on the bus and public transport and Mrs Van Lieshout topped the step count, amongst the staff, at 48kms for the week! There were some very tired people by Friday 8.30pm on our return. We had so many positive affirmations about Year 11 throughout the week at the many locations and activities we attended. A gentleman at the Hardrock Climbing Centre sent a message via Mr Humphries that Deniliquin High Students were a standout group of students unlike others he has observed. He could not get over what an embracing group of students we had in our midst, all encouraging and supporting one another to extend themselves and overcome challenges. Highlights were definitely; Australian Centre for Excellence, William Angliss Institute, Chandler McLeod Recruitment, Melbourne Polytechnic, Richmond Football Club, Vic Institute of Sport, Sofitel, dinner at the Hawker Night Market, live audience at the Project, Rock Climbing, Tree Adventure, Bounce Nick Theodossi Prestige Cars, Lort Smith Animal Hospital, St Vincent's Hospital, Multiplex Construction and the city scavenger hunt to name a few! The excursion is a culmination of a term’s worth of activities that are conducted in Year 11 Careers classes. Students are set research tasks and activities to help familiarise themselves with the TAFES, universities and other tertiary options including training and employment, in and around Melbourne. The information is then collated into a preference survey that students select their options. These options are then included into the Itinerary for the excursion. The social activities are also organised in this manner. Students will conduct a feedback survey with Mrs Van Lieshout in Careers classes this week, re: what worked and what needed work! Staff and students alike had a blast; we look forward to doing it all again next year!

YEAR 9 GIRLS EMPOWERMENT DAY

At the end of last term, the Year 9 girls participated in an empowerment day. The aim of the day was to not only empower the girls but to teach them some new skills, encourage team work and unity, while also having a lot of fun. The day started with a past student Lucy Howard (Beehag) sharing stories of her time at school and opening the floor up to questions from the girls. We are so lucky to live in a town where we have community members willing to give up their time to enrich days like this! After some yummy morning tea we then had a few hours of fun, smiles and laughter with the SheKan girls. Shez and Kell are fabulous. The girls learnt about personality types and dealing with others while participating in a team challenge. They also enlightened us with an activity that emphasized how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. The afternoon started with a challenge to design a wedding dress out of newspapers. The creativity was amazing, and the winning design will look spectacular on Miss Burton’s big day. Last, but not least, Georgia Van Lieshout a past DHS school captain who is now studying Dietetics at university spoke to us about a healthy balanced lifestyle and we got to get our hands dirty making bliss balls – a healthy snack that we can now make when we need one.
