CLINICAL ACTIVITIES Clinical Focus/Clinical Service Responsibilities/Clinical Service Building Director, Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry – 1978-2012. I established the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and the geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit and outpatient clinic at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1978. In subsequent years I established a geriatric psychiatry partial

hospital (“day hospital”) service and mobile treatment program. The later has been financially supported by the State of Maryland since 1988. I initially attended 12 months per year on the inpatient unit and weekly in the geriatric psychiatry outpatient. The impatient time commitment declined over time as I added research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities. At retirement from full time practice in 2012 I was attending on the inpatient unit 2 months per year; directed and attended weekly in the outpatient clinic; and directed the mobile treatment program. At the time of my retirement, the outpatient clinic had 400 active patients and approximately 7500 visits per year, and the mobile treatment service treated about 70 individuals with about 360 visits per year.

Research Foci I have focused on a number of issues related to Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry (Psychiatric aspects of neurological disease) over my career. Those for which I have provided the major impetus and have led to research publications include:

Problems faced by caregivers to persons with dementia and other chronic illnesses

Psychiatric disorders in persons with Multiple Sclerosis

The Charles Bonnet Syndrome (visual hallucinations in the visually impaired).

Neuroimaging correlates of Major Depression in the elderly

Clinical and neuroimaging aspects of bipolar disorder in the elderly

Clinical and neuroimaging aspects of Schizophrenia in the elderly

Delivery of care to elders residing in public housing

Ethical issues in dementia care
