Our recent Dementia Forum took place on Fri 3rd Nov and was a great success thanks to all those people who attended. The focus was on ‘Respite’ support for carers. ‘Support with Confidence’ spoke about the work of Personal Assistants including supervised social activities, sitting services, overnight and weekly respite options. For further details of Support with Confidence please visit http://www.bracknellforestsupportwithconfidence.co.uk/ or contact them on: 01344 206 113 We also had presentations From Bracknell Forest Council regarding the
new Carers Emergency Card (please see page 2 for further information)
and ‘Carers Time Out’ which is support offered by Bracknell Forest Council
to carers who are in need of a break from their caring role and would like
financial help to take part in a social activity. For further information please
discuss with your Dementia Adviser or Care Coordinator.
During the Forum there were Health and Social Care practitioners as well
as voluntary organisations on hand to chat with attendees and offer
further advice and support.
After lunch people offered their views on local support services. The key
message from this feedback was that people felt they received a good
responsive and supportive service from the Memory Clinic and Community
Mental Health Team. People also valued support from voluntary
organisations eg Triple ‘A’. However Carers felt that to improve support
pre-bookable respite care in Care Homes would be extremely beneficial.
The feedback from the forum will be forwarded to our local Dementia
Partnership Board and any possible improvements to current respite
options discussed. More detail will follow once a clear plan is in place.
For further information on current respite options please visit:

SIGNAL, the local carers service, are working with Bracknell Forest Council to
supply the new Carers Emergency Card packs.
The packs includes emergency cards for both the carer
and the individual cared for, along with emergency
contacts forms.
The Carers Emergency Card lets other people know in
an emergency that the person being cared for relies on
a carer. The card should be carried by the carer at all
times, for example in their bag or wallet. This provides
the reassurance that, in an emergency, there are backup
plans in place for the person being cared for so they
won’t be left without support. A card is also given to
the person cared for with carer information. The cards
are free.
In an accident/incident, the emergency services would
find the Carer Emergency Card and contact your
emergency contacts so they could step in to provide
support. If your contacts are not available then as a
backup option Adult Social Care would be contacted to
ensure that the person cared for is kept safe.
Shortly all carers registered with SIGNAL will be posted details of how the
new scheme works and the new cards.
Please contact SIGNAL if you are not registered with them or would like to
know more about the support they offer.

Please note: this new card replaces he existing red Carers Emergency Respite Card

Could You Be Claiming a Discount
on your Council Tax?
If you have a permanent condition that causes impairment of the brain and social functioning (eg, Dementia ) you could be disregarded for council tax purposes. It means you could claim:
A 25% discount – if you live with one other person A 100% discount – if you live alone. (please note, if you live with more than one other person, you may not receive any discount. Please discuss further with Bracknell Forest Council or your Care Coordinator).
Both of the following must apply for someone to qualify for a severe mental impairment (SMI) council tax discount:
You must have been medically certified as being severely mentally impaired. Having a diagnosis of dementia doesn’t automatically mean you qualify - a doctor must also certify you are severely mentally impaired.
You must be eligible for at least one of the following benefits: Incapacity benefit Attendance Allowance Severe disablement allowance Disability living allowance (higher or middle-rate care component) Increase in disablement pension (due to constant attendance being needed) Unemployability supplement or allowance Constant attendance allowance Income support (which includes a disability premium) Personal independence payment (standard or enhanced daily living component) Armed forces independence payment

FREE call blockers
The National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team is focussing on people with dementia who
may be receiving scams or nuisance calls and offering a solution. The NTS Scams Team is
offering FREE call blocking devices.
Why install a call blocker
Previous trials have shown
The blocking technology supplied by trueCall (www.truecall.co.uk) is extremely
effective blocking over 95% of nuisance calls.
People have reported many benefits from having a call blocker such as
Allowing people to live independently for longer
Significantly reducing the risk of financial harm.
Reducing anxiety, confusion and stress for older people, their family and their profes-
sional carers
Reducing the risk of trips, falls and distraction accidents due to getting up to answer the
phone unnecessarily
Helping those who live alone feel safer and more in control and giving peace of mind to their family and friends
To get a FREE call blocking device, YES should be answered to the following
Do you or the person you are applying for receive nuisance and scam calls?
Does the person who would like the call blocker have dementia?
If you answered yes to the above then please apply at:
www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/callblocker
We would also encourage you to do the 20 minute Friends Against Scams online learning.
Friends Against Scams has been created to tackle the lack of scams awareness by providing
information about scams and those who fall victim to them
If you have any queries please contact us at [email protected]

Monday 13th to Sunday 19th November
Self Care is all about residents taking control of their health. The theme of this year’s Self Care Week is Community Activity. Bracknell Forest is a hotbed of Community Activity, with an increasing number of ways that residents can get active, get connected, get help, learn, be creative and have fun with their family.
As we know, being involved in a community group can reduce social isolation, it can build strong support networks, reduce cognitive decline and can increase physical activity (and all the benefits that come with that: falls prevention, improved mood etc.). So if residents are able to be more active in their community, they are more likely to be able to Self Care and enjoy good mental and physical wellbeing.
During Self Care Week 2017 there will be promotion of the Community Map, a FREE resource which has a large number of local activities and groups that residents can join, many of which are open to complete beginners and range from Tai Chi to Chess and from Knitting to Wood-work!
Self Care Week 2017 will feature a number of community events, talks, free activity sessions, community conversations, a film, volunteering, community prescribing and importantly fun!

THE MINISTRY OF FUN
At Easthampstead Baptist Church (EBC) our Seniors’ Ministry (which we call “the ministry of fun”)
reflects our values ( Caring, Commitment, Community, Celebration and Communication) in all of the
different services and social activities that we run:
Mid Day Munch
Mid day Munch happens at 12.30pm on the second Thursday of each month. Enjoy a delicious two
course lunch and stay on after for the Thursday Service afterwards!
Thursday Service
Following Midday Munch on the second Thursday of the month we run a traditional yet informal ser-
vice at 2pm. We enjoy songs, prayers and a short talk, with tea and a bite to eat afterwards. Newcom-
ers are always very welcome!
Lunch Club
Lunch Club takes place from 1.00pm to 3.00pm on the fourth Thursday of every month. We follow a
lovely two course lunch with just under an hour of fun activities,. Expect music, gentle exercise and
some fun and games (plus a short talk!).
Refresh Café
‘Refresh’, is an ideal place to meet up with people and make new friends! We’re open at Crown Wood
Community Centre (Opladen Way) on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays 9.00am to1.30pm and Tues-
days & Thursdays 12.15pm to 4.15pm. We serve a range of freshly-prepared hot and cold food to ac-
company your hot or cold drinks.
Tuesday Club
If you like bingo, then the Crown Wood Community Centre is the place to go on a Tuesday afternoon!
Come along to our Refresh Café for a bite first if you’d like, then pop across into the adjoining hall for
fun and games from around 12.30 till 2.45pm.
Holiday at Home / Turkey & Tinsel
Many people are unable to get away for a break during the holidays. EBC’s Holiday at Home is five full
days of themed fun in the summer & involves great food, team games, crafts, sing-alongs, a day trip
and lots of laughter! Our team also runs a one-day Turkey and Tinsel at the end of December to give
us an extra Christmas and New Year celebration - even Santa spares us some of his time!
For more information and to book onto any events please contact Kathryn Stephen, via email:
[email protected] or through the church office by calling 01344 487744.
Please note: for Mid Day Munch and Lunch Club we suggest a donation of £3.00 to cover catering, if
this is tricky for you, don’t worry

Functions for the Elderly
We are looking for older adults with memory problems to get involved with our study.
Our study is focused on supporting conversations and leisure activities. This is
important as people with memory problems say that they often lack opportunity to
engage with enjoyable activities and maintain their social interactions with others.
We will be exploring communication & leisure using two existing computer
programs called Computer Interactive Reminiscence and Conversation Aid
(CIRCA) and Living in the Moment (LIM). We will be using touch screen
computers and there are pictures of people enjoying these activities on this
flyer. If you chose too, your involvement with our research would take place
in your own home for approximately two weeks.

Carer’s training- One-off Stress Management Session
Dr Natalie Almond (Clinical Psychologist) and Corinne Bishop (Assistant Psychologist)
Memory Clinic
Many people experience periods of stress triggered by what is currently happening in their life.
Living with, loving and caring for someone with dementia can have many challenges and rewards. We
recognise that at some points throughout this journey it can be stressful. This session aims to help you
be prepared for the stressful times if and when they arise.
This session is open to anyone who cares for someone with dementia, whether you currently feel that
you are experiencing stress or not. In this one off session (2 hours) we discuss what stress is, and help
you to recognise the symptoms of stress. We also show you a variety of strategies to help you relax and
manage your stress that you can take away from the session and use as regularly as you would like. We
help you to recognise what strategies you have used in the past to manage your stress, and what you
are doing currently and can continue to do in the future to help keep your stress levels low.
