Durable buckets for excavation Eurosteel/Finland Eurosteel uses mostly Raex in its excavator buckets, which are constantly subjected to extreme loads and wear. Ruukki and Eurosteel have worked together for many years, amongst other things on operational improvement projects. Ruukki has enabled Eurosteel to discontinue its plate cutting operations, leaving it to focus on its core business of excavator buckets. Ready-to-weld bucket components are now delivered just on time from Ruukki’s steel service centre to Eurosteel’s production facilities.

“The materials used in excavator buckets have evolved considerably over the years and 95% are now made of wear-resistant steel. We use only the best Finnish raw materials in our products,” explains Kari Töyli, Chief Executive Officer, Eurosteel Oy

Large buckets for extractive industries Maakasi/Finland Ripping, scraping or loose earth excavation – excavator buckets must endure the tough combinations of high surface pressure and abrasive wear.

Maakasi, with over 30 years of experience in designing and manufacturing large excavator buckets, chose Raex and Optim as the best combination for their toughest products. Some of the sheets are cut to length at Ruukki to improve production efficiency and reduce wastage. Maakasi’s research and development is supported by Ruukki’s technical customer services and application support. The companies have also cooperated in solution development.

“Raex has good surface qualities and is highly eco-nomical. We use Raex 400 for the bucket frames, with the bottom plates and bottom rails made of Raex 500. Raex 400 is tough and Raex 500 is hard wearing – an extremely good combination,” comments Mauri Tauriainen, one of Maakasi’s owners.

Product improvements for heavy mining tippers Inmeco/BrazilInmeco and PCP Produtos Siderúrgicos (Ruukki Certified Partner in Brazil) engineering team devel-oped a new product, Dump Tipper Body Europa, for 6x6 and 8x4 trucks used in heavy-duty mining operations. Their innovative new rear tailgate opening system works without the customary top hinges and bolts, while keeping a strong seal. Raex 450 was used for the open-box bed, significantly increasing wear resistance and product lifetime. Use of Ruukki's steel means the equipment is also nearly 400 kg lighter, increasing the payload and lowering fuel consumption.

“The partnership between Inmeco, PCP and Ruukki is very important as it means a significant improvement to our products. This project required high-strength steels to achieve our goal: raise the load safely and have lighter equipment,” says Leonardo Monteiro Parreiras, Director, Inmeco.

Strong vehicle for the mining industry KH-KIPPER/PolandKH-KIPPER produces a wide range of own construction and tailored trailers, semitrailers and tippers for trucks. In 2013, the company introduced a new W1M 1-way mine tipper on a Scania 8x4 chassis. It is mostly used to transport raw materials to crushers, requirinextremely wear-resistant and high-strength materials. The W1M body’s scow-end and layered floor is made of 15 mm wear-resistant Raex on the top, before being given a coating of shock-absorbing rubber over a special floor structure designed to withstand the impacts of large rocks. The side panels and vertical supports are made of 8 mm Raex to reduce weight and offer high strength and abrasion resistance.

KH-KIPPER is pleased with Ruukki’s deliveries and technical support. "Our customers expect lighter, better performing products with increased durability and reliability. Ruukki’s Raex and Optim help us to reduce weight and significantly prolong the lifetime of our products," explains Krzysztof Ordysinśki, process engineer, KH-KIPPER.

Compact waste containers POMOT/Poland “POMOT” Sp. z o.o. in is one of the largest Polish manufacturers of septic tanks, containers and municipal equipment. The company designed a new waste collecting vehicle suitable for cramped urban spaces. The container is a key component - compact with high payload and wear resistance. Wear-resistant Raex 450 was chosen for the side walls and floor of the new KS-8 waste container. Laser-welded, thin, wide sheets are delivered to the workshop as prefabricated components after bending at Ruukki's steel service centre in Oborniki.

The new waste container has a lower unladen weight and offers higher payload. Its strong resistance to plastic strain means a longer lifecycle. The advanced properties of the KS-8 container make it ideal for many different applications. The container was awarded a gold medal at EKOTECH 2011 fair in Kielce.

Highly visible containers JK Bysław/PolandJK Bysław is a leading and growing Polish manufacturer of light, special-steel containers. The challenge lies in creating competitive waste sorting products, press compactors, dumper containers and containers for municipal and industrial waste. Over 90% of the company's production is exported. The main customers are recycling companies from the Nordic countries, Germany and Belgium.

Raex wear-resistant steels from Ruukki were chosen for their product quality and process efficiency. JK containers are made of Raex 450 steel. JK Bysław uses 3- and 4-mm thick steels for the side walls and 5-mm thick steel for the floors. Ruukki’s thin, high-strength steel sheets are easy to bend and process. The surface treatment is easy with durable and high quality results.

Wear-resistant Raex tubeRaex 400 tube is simply the hardest cold-formed steel tube in the world. In fact, it is nearly three times as hard as regular S355. It can significantly improve the performance of pumping or dredging equipment and extend its service life beyond normal standards.

Raex tube doubles service life Betonstar/TurkeyBetonstar is the first concrete pump truck manufacturer to use Raex 400 Tube in its pumps. The wear-resistant Raex 400 Tube is ideally suited for applications such as pumping systems for wet concrete, transportation and the handling of semi-fluids, and the transportation and handling of sludge, dirt, sand, gravel, rock materials, grain and agricultural products.

The useful life of Raex 400 Tube has now been proven to be 2.5 times longer than that of standard mill tubes. Thanks to direct quenched raw material, tube production itself uses less energy.

“We have achieved our leading role on the Turkish and export markets by focusing on quality. Ruukki’s products have not only increased the total useful life of our products, but have also reduced the total weight of our concrete pumps. Ruukki’s sales and technical team also provides us with support in the sales and production phases of the process.” Ogǔz Diken, owner of Betonstar.

Firm but flexible steel – and partner Sokoró/HungarySokoró is a manufacturer of quality agricultural equipment. The company wanted to find wear- resistant, high-strength, yet easily formable special steels for the wearing parts of agricultural machinery.

The best solutions to these requirements were wear-resistant Raex and high-strength Optim 700 MC steels in 8-mm and 25-mm plates. Optim MC has the strength, formability and good welding and ductility properties to enable more efficient manufacturing. Raex is mainly used for the abrasion parts of cultivators, with Sokoró processing and shaping the steel in their own facilities. The machinery is exported within the EU.

Finding the right steels was only one aspect. The other was securing reliable and accurate delivery. Both criteria have been successfully fulfilled and the partnership is developing further.

“Ruukki has been accurate and fair to the utmost. And Ruukki’s steels met all our requirements, so Ruukki was an easy choice as a supplier,” says Tibor Szabó of Sokor.

Light and tough snowploughs Garnero/ItalyGarnero wanted to develop an innovative, very light snowplough for an all-terrain-vehicle. Quality was the first priority.

Garnero chose Ruukki’s Optim 900 QC (3.0 mm) for the curved plough and Raex 500 for the snow blade. The objective was an elastic high-strength curved snowplough with an impact and wear-resistant plough blade. Easy machining and welding were among the top priorities. All objectives were fully achieved.

Garnero succeeded in offering a unique, excellent snowplough which met the lightness and toughness sought. The customer for the special all-terrain-vehicle was surprised by the very high quality of the machine. It is light, easy to handle, stable and durable.
