DELTA TWP. - About 40 people gathered April 12 at Windemere View Elementary to discuss its closing with Waverly superintendent Debra Jones. Jones assured the audience that the building and grounds would be maintained and kept secure. When asked if the district would consider selling the building to become a charter school, she said “absolutely not.” All three of the remaining elementaries will be reconfigured for the next school year. Colt will become Waverly’s Early Childhood Center, with all its students bussed. Elmwood and Winans will serve second- through fourth-graders. No summer child care Jones said there will still be before-and-after-school child care for elementary students, but summer child care will be discontinued because of cost - it takes half a teacher’s salary to run the program. She urged laid-off employees to apply at the nearby YMCA and Rainbow Child Development Program. Jones also said breakfast will be available next year for all Waverly students through grade six. Several parents asked Jones what will be done to help smooth the transition process for children. Every student willl know which building they will go to next year by the end of the current school year, she said, and high school students will have their schedules. She pointed out that, although every school is changing significantly, familiar teachers from Colt and View will be in place at Winans and Elmwood. And all the first-grade teachers will be at Colt. “Eight totally talented teachers will be planning,” Jones said. “They don’t have to learn a building; they have a building to create.” Teachers will have three days just before school begins for team planning. May 9 meeting Some decisions remain to be made. The school board will consider a full-day kindergarten at its May 9 meeting, for instance. Jones is looking at making the East schedule the same as the elementary schedule. Board member Mary Ann Martin thanked everyone who came to the meeting. “Your children are my children,” she said. “I’ve been trying to do what’s right for your families and fiscally.” School-of-choice parent Samantha Durrett said after the meeting that she worries about the beginning of the next school year, particularly because the MEAP testing occurs so early. “I think it will have kinks,” she said. “You almost wish you could do a trial (first).” View families plan for future By MARY JO WHITE [email protected] Waverly superintendent Debra Jones discusses the closing of Windemere View Elementary with local families April 12. The unanimousreconfiguration voteby the Waverly

School Board on March14 was almost anti-climatic.So was the one on March28 to close WindemereView.

Just like that, in thetwinkling of an eye, with nofurther discussion, it wasclear that one elementaryschool will close next yearand the others will changesignificantly.

For anyone who satthrough last year’smeetings on the sametopic, the contrast couldn’thave been more stark.

Last year, there wasmore than enough pain togo around.

Parents spokevehemently about how theyfeared the loss of theirneighborhood school andthreatened to send theirkids elsewhere. ( I alwayswondered where thoseparents would find adistrict not in the sameeconomic boat as Waverlyor maybe even worse.)

Principals and teachersshared how they felt leftout of the process. Eachpart of the plan developed

by the citizens’ groupchaired by Will Mahoneywas scrutinized andcriticized.

Speaking of pain, whatabout the members of thatcommittee who workedlong and hard, Mahoneyin particular, and then hadto listen to hours oftestimony about why theirrecommendations wouldn’twork?

Watching the recentvotes, I was struck bythe fact that last year’spain may have been thecatalyst for this year’sprogress. Maybe that painis one reason why newsuperintendent

Debra Jones was able tosay she hadn’t heard even

one negative comment atany of her public forums.

This takes nothing awayfrom her herculean efforts. In fact, Jones seems to beour own Energizer bunny, constantly on the movefrom the day she startedher new job last July.

You’d see her in localcoffee shops andrestaurants early in themorning, meeting withwhatever parents chose toshow up to talk to her.

You’d also see her invarious schools fairly lateat night, holdingcommunity forums, presenting ideas and, mostimportantly, listening, listening, listening.

Maybe the feedback

from last year reinforcedher decision to seek outopinions from literallyevery Waverly stakeholder, from principals, parentsand teachers to parapros, lunch aides, custodians andbus drivers.

More tough decision willface will face us soon, mainly because of budgetcuts, and some will bedivisive.

The lesson from the lasttwo years, though, is apositive one.

We’re all in this together.

SOMETHING FOR THEWHOLE FAMILY

DELTA TWP. - The DeltaTownship Historical Societywill present a special histori-cal program titled Lansing toLansing and Back – The Re-dedication of the 1799 NorthLog Cabin, Lansing Town-ship, NY. The program willbe held on Thursday, April21 at 6 p.m. at Delta Town-ship Administration Build-ing.

Jane and Terry Brycewill present a program onthe North family migrationin the 1830’s from Lansing,

New York to Delhi Town-ship, Michigan and the earlyformation of Lansing, Michi-gan.

The presentation is cen-tered on their August 2010

trip to the New York LansingTownship and the rededica-tion of the 1799 log cabin ofThomas North, a Revolution-ary War veteran.

Have you ever wonderedhow Lansing was named?Jane Bryce’s ancestor Jo-seph E. North (Thomas’soldest son) suggested thename to commemorate thetown where he was born.

At the time of the cabinrededication last year, theLansing Star paper inter-viewed Jane.

“He was the first to go toMichigan,” Bryce said. “Thenhe talked his brother Henryinto visiting him. On that vis-it Henry decided he wouldmove to that area. Josephmentioned the name Lan-sing. Henry actually suggest-ed the name Genessee, butthat was already being usedsomewhere closer to De-troit, so Lansing won outfor the name of the town-ship. The city of Lansing wasnamed after the township.”

Jane Bryce is also a de-

scendent of the Moon familywho lived in the cabin on thegrounds of Woldumar Na-ture Center. She has doneextensive research on theirfamily and the history of theLansing area.

The administration build-ing is at 7710 W. SaginawHwy., across from Horrocks.

The talk is open to thepublic and is offered free. For more information call517-974-5523 or [email protected].
