Dunning, whose family startedthe Optimist in 1922, was a formerpresident of the Delta Board of Tradeas well as helping found groups likethe Delta Historical and MuseumSociety, Kinsmen Club of Ladner andthe Delta Community Band Society.Dunning, a beloved Delta storyteller,received numerous awards duringhis life, including the first Freedom ofthe Municipality in 2004.

Berner gets 2.5-year sentencePrison term, which will be appealed, handed out for her role in 2008 crash that killed Alexa Middelaer

Carol Berner was sentenced totwo and a half years behind barsFriday afternoon but could be outon bail in the coming days afterher lawyer launches an appealMonday.

Just minutes after Berner wasled away in handcuffs her lawyer,David Tarnow, announced that hewill be filing an appeal first thingMonday morning.

Provincial court.Berner was convicted in July of

impaired driving causing death,impaired driving causing bodilyharm, dangerous driving causingdeath and dangerous driving caus-ing bodily harm in the May 17,2008 crash that killed four-year-old Alexa Middelaer and injuredher aunt Daphne Johanson.

Alexa and her aunt had beenfeeding a horse in the 4300-blockof 64th Street in East Ladnerwhen a car driven by Bernerplowed into them. The little girlwas fatally wounded and died

later at B.C. Children’s Hospital.Johanson was seriously injured,underwent extensive surgery,spent four weeks in hospital andseveral months in a wheelchair.

The Crown had asked for athree to five year sentence witha five to seven year driving ban.The defense asked for a suspend-ed sentence that could be servedin the community.

Addressing the court onMonday, Berner said, “If therewas anything I could do or say totake away your pain, I would. AllI can do is take responsibility for

my actions.”There was a brief delay in the

proceedings when, after finishingher statement, Berner had a severepanic attack.

The courtroom was clearedand after some time, Berner wasled from the courtroom by a sup-porter.

It was an emotional day for allas members of Alexa Middelaer’sfamily read out victim impactstatements.

A group of BoundaryBay Airport flight schoolsis among those filing a law-suit against the federal gov-ernment for loss of revenueand increased expenses dur-ing the Vancouver WinterOlympics, it was announced

Club, Pacific ProfessionalFlight Centre and MontairAviation are includedamong the six proposedplaintiffs, an Air TransportAssociation of Canada press

release stated. The claimsare in excess of $1 millionand the lawsuit is expectedto be brought before theSupreme Court of B.C.

Increased security restric-tions were in place fromJan. 29 to March 24 for the

Olympics. Air operators saytheir businesses were sig-nificantly impaired becauseof the regulations.

Restrictions includedextensive prescreening forpilots, instructors and stu-dents.

If it sounds to good to betrue, it probably is. That’sthe message from Deltapolice this week after anattempted real estate fraud.

The suspect(s) set up aCraigslist posting adver-tising a four-bedroomTsawwassen house for rentfor $1,000 a month.

One local resident, whodid not want his name used,saw the ad as he was look-ing for a new place to live.He said he was intriguedand sent an e-mail inquiry.He received an “officiallooking” reply with a rentalapplication from a man whosaid he was being relocatedto Nigeria for work for afew years and instead ofselling the family home, hedecided to rent it out.

The man filled out theapplication, which includedpersonal information suchas his address, driver’slicence number and date ofbirth.

Later, he drove by thehouse and noticed it had a

for sale sign out front. Hecalled the realtor and wastold the Craigslist ad was afraud.

Delta police spokesper-son Sgt. Sharlene Brookssaid the initial report camefrom the homeowner,who said they had beenapproached by a few peopleinquiring about the rentalad.

The fraudulent ad hassince been removed fromthe website, she said.

Brooks had a few tips forpeople using the Internet tolook for rental accommoda-tions.

“If it sounds too good tobe true, it probably is,” shesaid.

Brooks said not to pro-vide any personal informa-tion unless you have metwith someone in person;a face-to-face meeting isappropriate.

“If things are not addingup, listen to your instincts.”

With the ad removed andno loss of money or prop-erty, Brooks said the inves-tigation into the matter hasbeen concluded.

TransLink wants to digeven deeper into homeown-ers’ pockets.

TransLink’s board essen-tially gave an ultimatum toMetro Vancouver mayorsthis week, requesting addi-tional funding to build the$1.4 billion Evergreen Line.

Two transit serviceimprovement options werepresented, both includingthe rapid transit line.

The mayors were toldthey risked losing millionsin federal funding if thefinancing wasn’t secured bya deadline.

The extra fundingreportedly works out to anadditional $60 in propertytax for an average MetroVancouver home valued at$600,000.

In Delta, the averageassessed value of a home iscurrently $488,000. In twoyears, if the average valuereaches the $500,000 mark,the tax hit would be around$50, noted Delta budgetingmanager Vivian Koo, sayingthe increase would depend

on the value of homes at thetime.

Koo said TransLink ispermitted to raise its shareof property taxes by a cer-tain percentage every year,but any additional fundingfor big projects has to beapproved by regional may-ors.

In a letter to the mayors,board chair Dale Parkernoted the recommendedoption for the supplemental

increase would also addover 425,000 hours of annu-al service to bus routes.Based on current usage,that represents the capacityto provide over 23 millionmore transit trips per year.

Parker said the Southof the Fraser region wouldreceive half of the addi-tional bus service hours,which would make over 11million more rides per yearavailable in the area.

Noting a vehicle levycouldn’t be implemented bythe federal funding dead-line, Parker also said therewould be future “importantprojects that will justifyfuture supplements as theregion grows.”

Saying the mayors areleft in a position wheretheir only input into tran-sit proposals is to say yesor no to funding requests,Delta South MLA Vicki

Huntington believes hom-eowners are already maxedout when it comes to taxa-tion.

“My personal view isthey just simply have tofind either more efficien-cies in the system or theyhave to scale back theirneeds. I just don’t knowany other way around it.You cannot keep askingthese homeowners to keepfooting these bills,” said

Huntington.TransLink is offering to

fund the first year of thenew three-year plan from itsreserves, giving the mayorsand provincial governmenttime to act on a memoran-dum of understanding theysigned in late Septemberand develop new sourcesof funding to avoid furtherincreases to property taxes.

While the possibility ofvehicle levies has been acontentious topic, at thispoint it’s not clear if futurealternate sources couldalso include the possibilityof bridge and tunnel tolls,something that certainlywouldn’t go over well inSouth Delta.

Mayor Lois Jackson, inan interview last month,said TransLink was doingthe planning for transporta-tion without a real mandatefor planning, which is nor-mally done at the regionaldistrict. At that time shesaid she wasn’t prepared toconsider any further taxa-tion on homeowners.

The TransLink Mayors’Council will vote on theincrease Dec. 9.

A new replacement feewill be introduced for usersof Delta’s artificial turfplaying fields.

Delta council approvedthe new fee this week,which won’t begin until2012. It’s part of a series offee adjustments for parksand recreation facilities.

A report by parks andrecreation director KenKuntz notes synthetic turffields have a life expectan-cy of 12 to 15 years. Delta’soldest field at Mackie Parkis almost nine years old.

Youth sports groups willbe charged $3.50 per hourfor using artificial turffields, while adult groupswill pay $7 per hour. In2013, the fee will increaseto $5 per hour for youthgroups and $10 for adults.

The replacement fee willadd approximately $10 ayear to the total registrationfee for an individual, saidKuntz.

It is expected to gener-ate $38,000 in 2012 and$53,000 the following year.

New fees and charges,meanwhile, for other rec-

reation facilities in 2011,according to Kuntz, won’tsignificantly change rev-enue amounts for Delta, butincreases for 2012 and 2013are expected to generate anadditional $140,000 annu-ally.

Kuntz said Delta aims tome in the middle to lower

end of fees for culture andrecreation programs inMetro Vancouver.

Coun. Robert Campbell,who chairs the parks andrecreation commission,said admission revenuesare extremely important tohelp the bottom line, eventhough the services are still

subsidized by taxpayers.“It’s worth mention-

ing how much money isbrought in from fees andcharges each year. It’sseven-and-a-half million(dollars). If we didn’t havethese fees and chargesstructure, and everythingwas based on the tax draw,

then we would have to haveclose to an eight per centincrease in our tax rate tocover off the revenue thatfees and charges bring in,”he said.

Campbell added a largeportion of user fees aredirected to equipmentreplacement reserve funds.

Early impressions arepositive for the new Ladnerskate park.

“So far it’s good. It’sgot some ... good lines.It’s a little bit small butthe designdefinitelymakes up forthe size,” saidskateboarderJohn Baker,who was outusing the parkon Mondayafternoon with about 20others.

The new skate park,just north of the LadnerLeisure Centre, has beenopen for over a week. Theold park was removed tomake room for the DeltaSports Development Centre,future home of the DeltaGymnastics Society.

Baker, who’s fromVancouver, said he usedto come out to the previ-ous park “all the time” anddescribed it as something ofa skateboarding landmark.

The old park had a street

style to it while the newone has a bowl style, Bakersaid.

Chris Macallum, whoalso made the trip fromVancouver, said he’s reallyhappy with the new skatepark.

He did say that someaddi-tions likestreet andtransitionfeatureswould be abenefit.

“It wouldbe good to

develop it further,” he said.Delta park planner Linda

Nielsen said skateboarderswere included in helpingshape the park.

“They had a greatinvolvement in the designprocess,” she said.

She said early feedbackhas been positive.

“From what I heard, theylove it. They’re ecstaticabout it. Everyday when Idrive by on my way homeI kind of stop and look.There’s usually 10 to 20[people] out there skatingaround.

“We encourage the kidsto get out there and use itwhile they can before it getstoo dark at night,” she said,adding that Delta parks areclosed at night.

Some landscaping aroundthe skate park still needsto be completed, Nielsennoted.

sales have remained steadyover the past four months,indicating stability in theresidential housing market,the Real Estate Board ofGreater Vancouver said lastweek.

“We’ve seen a lot moreconsistency and less volatil-ity in recent months whenit comes to both numberedsales and pricing, althoughit’s important to remem-ber that conditions oftenvary between communi-ties and neighbourhoods,”said board president JakeMoldowan, who is a SouthDelta realtor.

The number of salesis on the rise — Octobersaw 2,337 transactions inGreater Vancouver, which isa 5.3 per cent increase overSeptember but a 36.9 percent decrease from October2009, which saw 3,704sales.

Prices have seen a slight

increase in the last 12months. Last month, thebenchmark price for allresidential properties inthe Lower Mainland was$579,349, which is 4.6 percent higher than October

2009 ($553,702). However,since June residential homeprices have remained rela-tively unchanged, decliningby 0.2 per cent.

“As we enter the finaltwo months of the year,buyer demand is in closeralignment with supplythan we’ve seen for mostof 2010,” Moldowan said.“Those buying today rec-ognize that they still have achance to enter the market

with near record low inter-est rates, while gradualreductions in inventory haveeased downward pressureon prices.”

The benchmark pricefor a detached home in

South Delta in Octoberwas $655,980, that’s downslightly from the three-month average benchmarkprice of $674,537.

Don’t lookinternallyfor leader

Internal candidates need not apply.If the B.C. Liberals have not already

issued that memo in regards to find-ing a replacement for Premier GordonCampbell, they would be advised todo so. Although it’s customary when aparty leader steps down for his or hermost trusted lieutenants to battle it outto become the successor, there are timeswhen that’s not advisable.

This, I’m afraid, is one of those times.Recent B.C. history backs that up.

Ujjal Dosanjh took over for the dis-graced Glen Clark and promptly led theNew Democrats into oblivion in the 2001election. Despite being a well respectedmember of cabinet, Dosanjh lost hisown riding in the landslide that saw theLiberals capture all but two of 79 seats.

A decade earlier, Bill Vander Zalm’ssuccessor, Rita Johnson, came fromSocial Credit’s inner circle only to pre-side over the death of the once-proudparty, which was limited to just sevenseats and third billing in the legislature.

It’s hard to believe the Liberals won’tsuffer the same fate if they decide tolook within their own ranks to replaceCampbell. There’s simply too much bag-gage associated with this administrationfor one of its key players to become thenew face of it.

Everyone’s keeping their cards closeto the vest at this point, but none of themost likely suspects — cabinet ministerslike Kevin Falcon, Mike de Jong andRich Coleman — are ruling out a run forthe leadership. They all have aspirations,which is completely understandable, butat this point in time they’re all the wrongchoice.

Falcon has mused about Carole Tayloras a possible leadership candidate, evengoing as far as to suggest he’d step asideif the former Liberal finance ministerand current SFU chancellor-designateopted to run. Popular Surrey MayorDianne Watts is another name being ban-died about.

Whether it’s one of these two or some-one else, the writing is most definitelyon the wall: the Liberals have to lookoutside of their own ranks to find anew leader. And even that might not beenough to win back supporters that havebeen alienated by the HST and otherdecisions.

Back in 1991, NDP leader MikeHarcourt said he’d much rather face abaggage-toting Johnston than GraceMcCarthy, the grand dame of the Socredswho had distanced herself from the scan-dal-plagued Vander Zalm. Harcourt gothis wish and became premier as a result.

I suspect Carole James has a similarwish. It’s entirely up to the Liberals todecide if it will come true.

Last Wednesday, after some“considerable soul-searching” —or, perhaps, poll reading — GordonCampbell announced he was step-ping down, after serving as premierof B.C. since 2001. Somewhere,I’m sure, anti-HST campaignershad a drink to celebrate.

In a televised statementCampbell said, “Over the last fewweeks, our government has contin-ued to move forward with initia-tives that will create jobs, builda stronger economy and supportfamilies across British Columbia.”(Good job, speech writers, on try-ing to put a positive spin on hisspectacular fall from grace.)

He continued, “Yet it is clear tome that those initiatives are beingovershadowed. When public debatebecomes focused on one person,instead of what is in the best inter-est of British Columbians, we havelost sight about what is important.

When that happens, it’s time forchange.”

Some would call it a change,sure, but others might just call it alast ditch effort to win the next pro-vincial election in 2013. The facthe realized it would take two-and-a-half years to turnthings around isn’texactly a good signfor the party.

NDP LeaderCarole James com-mented, “It’s becomeincreasingly clear theB.C. Liberals havebroken trust withthe people they wereelected to serve. Noissue shows that moreclearly than the HST.”

She’s right that the sloppy intro-duction of the HST is the mainreason Campbell slipped down toa nine per cent approval rating,but what’s yet to be determined iswhich party, by the time the 2013election comes around, will havegained enough trust to form ourprovincial government.

The Liberals have done a greatjob at losing supporters, but it alsowasn’t that long ago the NDP wasin the same position.

Remember, when Campbell tookover the Liberals in 1993, they

hadn’t won a provincial election inmore than 50 years. It took somepretty spectacular screw-ups on theNDP’s part to allow the Liberals totake over.

Either way, it’s a win-winsituation for our MLA ,Vicki

Huntington, whoseelection as an inde-pendent in 2009granted her immu-nity in this mess. Italso proved a fewthings.

Firstly, that shehad maintained astellar reputationduring her careerin municipal poli-tics.

Secondly, that our riding ofDelta South was seriously unhappywith the Liberal party for somevery valid reasons and lastly, thatthere is a demand for a third optionin B.C. provincial politics.

Some ridings, like ours, areunhappy with the Liberals andeither don’t align themselves withthe NDP or haven’t forgotten yetwhat a mess they made the lasttime they were in power. In a two-party province this doesn’t leaveyou with many options, and maybe,just maybe, it’s time for this tochange.

Letters to the Editor

Editor:As I write this letter

Carol Berner is yet to besentenced, however herstatement to the court anda statement released by herniece attributed to Bernerare available on the internetand in print.

As a longtime residentof East Ladner (I am onlya two-minute walk toaccident site) I have fol-lowed the trial with interestbelieving the Middelaerfamily’s tragedy is one thataffects and diminishes ourentire community. I have apersonal interest in seeingjustice is done and similar“accidents” are prevented inthe future.

Berner says she is foreverchanged and will suffer forthe rest of her life becauseof her actions. She told thecourt she will never driveagain, has given up drinkingand has found God.

What she has yet toexplain is why, if she is soremorseful, she allowed herlawyer to argue that she wasnot guilty.

Berner’s statement andher remorse are a day lateand a dollar short.

Berner isn’t sorry shedrove drunk that day, she issorry she caused an acci-dent, was caught and sub-sequently convicted. Peoplewho are truly sorry for theiractions acknowledge themand take responsibility forthem long before a judge orjury determines their guiltor innocence.

While I support Berner’sright to mount a vigorousdefense and present thatcase in court, her apologyhas a hollow ring to it. IfBerner truly wanted to“have the opportunity tohelp rebuild value in ourcommunity and heal thedevastation I have caused”

she would have saved theMiddelaers the pain andanguish of living through atrial and would have accept-ed responsibility from theoutset.

Halloween Fright Fest , 2010 was an amazing success on Thursday,October 28, attracting an estimated 2,000 people. The South DeltaSecondary School drama students (Equinox Theatre) , supportedby teacher, Paige Hansen, successfully turned the McKee HeritageHouse into a creepy, yet thrilling motel. Other activities included facepainting and crafts for the kids, a wonderful young band called theCentennials, and free popcorn giveaways, courtesy of the Rotary Clubof Tsawwassen. The Boys & Girls Club of Delta/Richmond offered anamazing mad scientist room in their building. BC Hydro, the LadnerBusiness Association, Delta Community Music School, Felix Farmsall came together for the evening. A great big thank you to SignalTrucking Ltd who provided a stage for the band and to the GuichonFarm for providing hay rides in the community. McKee SeniorsRecreation Centre hosted trick or treaters, and the Kee Cafe ran outof burger meal deals before the end of the night. Fraser ValleyRegional Library told stories in the McKee lounge and theDelta Optimist coupled with the Richmond Photo Club tophotograph kids and families. Delta Parks and Recreationprovided goodies and crafts for the kids. For the mostpart, the rain behaved and a good time was had by all.

The Fright Fest is such a huge success because of this wonderful community that supports it.Hope everyone comes again next year.

self-deception! People in the U.S.,France, Greece and, yes, citizens ofour province (you and I) are deceiv-ing ourselves thinking we can keepup our privileged lifestyles withoutresponsibilities. We want the gov-ernment to take care of us; we feelentitled to all the privileges but areloath to take on the responsibilitiesthat come with them.

Well, guess what? It doesn’t takean expensive study to understand lifedoesn’t work this way. Things willgo from bad to worse as long as weallow ourselves to be deceived ordeceive ourselves. (See 2 Timothy3:12). Let’s cherish the privileges weenjoy but let’s be equally responsibleby demanding less of others andmore of ourselves.

Breakmen roll into Ladner

The Breakmen will be making a stopin Ladner later this month as partof the band’s Canadian tour.

It’s a busy stretch for the Vancouver-based roots band, having just released anew album, titled Heartwood, and havingshows lined up in Ontario, Quebec, B.C.and Alberta over the next few weeks.

“We’re really excited about the newCD. We had a ton of fun making it andwe’re looking forward to the tour. It’sgoing to be a blast,” says Breakmenmember and Boundary Bay resident LeeWatson, who sings and plays guitar andmandolin.

Heartwood, available since Sunday,is the band’s third album but marks thefirst time the group has worked with Junoaward-winning producer Bob Hamilton.

“It was really fun working with BobHamilton up in Whitehorse at Old CrowRecordings. He’s been someone we’velooked up to for a long time. We’vealways loved the records that he’s done,”says Watson during a phone interviewfrom Toronto last week where the bandwas rehearsing for the tour.

While he and fellow band membersArchie Pateman, Ben Rogalsky andMatthew Lawson are all originally fromOntario, Watson says they met while treeplanting and relocated to B.C.

The group’s self titled debut albumcame out in 2006 while sophomore effortWhen You Leave Town was released in2008.

That record earned the band CanadianFolk Music Awards nominations last yearin the Emerging Artist of the Year and

Vocal Ensemble of the Year categories.The group was also nominated for a 2009Independent Music Award for AmericanaAlbum of the Year.

The group’s website describes theband’s sound as “a distinct voice inCanadian roots music” and gives it thelabel of “Roots Soup.”

Watson says he doesn’t know exactlywhere the term came from but notes that’sa good way to describe their music.

“We draw from all kinds of rootsmusic, American, Canadian, whateveryou want to call it, North American rootsmusic,” he says, noting they also drawfrom blues, country, folk, bluegrass androck ‘n roll.

As time goes on, the band’s evolving,he says.

“When we got together we were reallyinfluenced by bluegrass music and stringband music and we still are, but we’reincorporating other influences.”

On Heartwood there’s an increasedrock ‘n’ roll feel with more electric guitarand drums. It wasn’t a conscious deci-sion, Watson says, but just something thathappened and began flowing through thesong writing and instrumentation on thealbum.

The Breakmen are scheduled to playon Saturday, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. at GenesisTheatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner.

being a part of the StarryNight anniversary show onMonday in Vancouver.

Since it’ll be the 25thanniversary for the HIV/AIDS benefit fundraiserthat “means there’s going tobe some heavy, heavy catson stage. To be part of thatlineup is amazing,” saidWilson.

Other performers includeJim Byrnes, The Sojournersand The Higgins, a countryband from North Delta.

Wilson, a musician andsinger, plans to performMarvin Gaye’s SexualHealing at the event. Hecounts Gaye, a singer-songwriter who had thenicknames The Prince ofMotown and The Prince ofSoul, as one of his musicalidols.

Wilson performed at lastyear’s Starry Night as wellas the past couple editionsof Motown Meltdown,another event put on by theShooting Stars Foundation.

“The Shooting StarsFoundation has done so

much for people living withHIV and AIDS,” he said,adding he’s proud to be apart of the group’s shows.

Wilson, who was bornin the UK and raisedin Edmonton, isn’t asentrenched in the musicindustry as he’s been in thepast but still keeps “onefoot in the door.”

He’s been a part of afunk/soul cover band inEdmonton and a rock bandthat was a winner of theFox’s Seeds contest in 2000as well as having his ownsolo career in R&B.

These days Wilson isalso running his own fitnessbusiness.

Working the ‘forgotten muscles’

Confession: It’s nice towork out muscles that makeus look good.

I mean, let’s be honest, alot of us started working outpurely due to vanity!

Yes, feeling good, beingfit, moving fluidly andbeing strong are also allgreat and valid reasonspeople choose to begin, andcontinue, to work out, butlet’s not overlook the factwe also want some damnfine looking abs as well.

Common areas that wetrain to “look good” dependon gender.

Men like to train the T-shirt muscles — the pecs,biceps and shoulders —while women prefer to trainthe booty muscles — theglutes and legs.

But what about the restof the body? In particular,

those muscles that help uswith our daily activities,assist us in sport, stabilizeour shoulders, hips andspine? The muscles thathelp those big muscles, likethe pecs, glutes and legs, dotheir jobs?

I call these muscles our“forgotten muscles.”

Unfortunately, if theyremain forgotten, we willeventually be plagued withsome sort of pain, potential-ly an injury and a definiteloss of full function.

While we may have for-gotten about these muscles,let me assure you they willnot allow you to forgetabout them for too long.

There are many little sta-bilizer muscles that need tobe kept strong in the body,but I have found four thatare weak on most individu-als.

These four “forgottenmuscles” are the lowertrapezius, the rotator cuffgroup, the gluteus mediusmuscles and the multifidimuscles.

Below I have outlined

four exercises you can eas-ily implement into yourregular workout routineso you no longer overlookyour forgotten muscles.

Lower TrapeziusThe lower traps are locat-

ed around the mid-backarea, in between the shoul-der blades, and are crucialfor proper posture and astable shoulder joint.

I have also found that bystrengthening this group ofmuscles, people who areprone to tension headachesexperience fewer of them.

• Hold onto a Therm-Band with both hands,palms up.

• Open up the chest andfocus on bringing the shoul-ders down and together.Pause and slowly release,bringing your hands backtogether.

• You should feel astretch in your chest and themuscles in your mid-backfire up.

• Aim 15-20 repetitions.

Rotator Cuff

These group of fourmuscles are located in theback cuff of the shoulderand are crucial at maintain-ing shoulder stability.

The most effective way tostrengthen all four musclesis with the side-lying exter-nal rotation exercise with alight dumbbell.

• Lie on your left side,with your right arm flexedat 90 degrees and resting ontop of a rolled towel on thewaist.

• Rotate the upper arm,raising the dumbbell ashigh as you can while stillkeeping the elbow on top ofthe towel.

• Aim for 15-20 repeti-tions.

Gluteus MediusThe glute med is an

important muscle in con-trolling and stabilizing thehips, as well as assisting inknee tracking.

• Lie on your side againsta wall. The head, hips andheels should all be touchingthe wall.

• Lift the top leg up, slid-ing the heel along the wallas you do. Keep your toepointed slightly downwardsas you lift.

• Aim for 15-20 repeti-tions.

MultifidusThe multifidus muscle

is a series of deep musclesthat are attached up the spi-nal column. They are usedto stabilize the low backand pelvis before movementof the legs and arms occur.

In order to perform thebird/dog exercise as pre-scribed below, it is veryimportant to be able toactivate your transversusabdominis as well as themulitfidi.

• Position yourself on

your hands and knees, withyour hands directly belowthe shoulders and yourknees directly below thehips.

• Engage your multifidus(see website above to learnhow) and extend your rightarm straight out, thumb up,and your left leg.

• Hold for 8-10 secondsand then switch sides.

• Aim for 4-5 times eachside.

Familiar territory for Ice Hawks new coachDave McLellan is not only up to speed on the Pacific International Junior Hockey League but once played junior in Ladner

Dave McLellan needed no intro-duction to the Pacific InternationalJunior Hockey League or eventhe Ladner Leisure Centre for thatmatter.

As a scout for the NanaimoClippers, McLellan was alreadygetting his steady diet of PIJHLgames when the Delta Ice Hawksoffered him the head coachingposition last month. Since then,the former head coach of the B.C.Hockey League’s Burnaby Expresshas been perfect behind the benchwith four straight wins, includingTuesday’s 4-3 triumph over theMission Icebreakers.

“It just seemed like a naturalfit,” said McLellan who is goodfriends with Ice Hawks generalmanager Peter Zerbinos.. “It madesense, I met with the ownershipgroup and it feels good gettingback into coaching. Everything hasbeen really good so far.”

McLelllan’s playing careeractually included a stop withthe former Ladner Rebels junior“B” franchise. The New Westnative went on to conclude hisjunior career in Bellingham andChilliwack. He played profession-ally in Europe before turning hisattention to coaching.

For a decade, he was a direc-tor of player development forthe Nippon Cranes of the Asian

Professional League and helpedthe franchise win a pair of cham-pionships. In 2005, he returnedhome to work as an assistant withthe Express. He later would servethree seasons as the club’s headcoach and director of hockeyoperations.

McLellan also runs Top ShelfHockey — a player developmentschool based out of Langley.

He inherited an Ice Hawk teamthat had already got off to a solidstart under former coach DarrylErickson and the challenge is tomotivate veteran group that iscapable of going the distance.

“The pace of play is not thatmuch different (than the BCHL)but if you don’t bring your best

game you will get into trouble likewe did tonight,” said McLellan inreference to the shaky win overMission. “We hadn’t practice forpast six days and we want to getback into good habits. We’re ateam that thinks it can outscoreits problems. We want to developmore on the defensive side.”

“I think if you are going togo deep into the playoffs, in anyleague, with any team, then youhave to be a good defensive hock-ey team. When we won a nationalchampionship (2005 in Burnaby)everyone thought we were a greatoffensive team. But when you lookback at that playoff run, we madeteams earn everything they got.”

Despite his perfect start and

the Ice Hawks’ league best 14-3-2record, it’s only good enough fora first place tie with North Delta(15-6-0) in the extremely com-petitive Tom Shaw Conference.The two teams meet tonight atSungod Arena, while the thirdplace Richmond Sockeyes are justthree points back and fourth placeGrandview six.

“The lack of balance (in theleague) is something I evennoticed from a scouting perspec-tive,” added McLelland. “Yourtypically watching the same teamsall the time and the other divisionhas been left behind. It’s defi-nitely unqiue. Our game againstGrandview (a 2-1 overtime win)felt like a playoff game.”

A trio of field lacrosse players from South Delta havebeen selected to play for the Burnaby Mountain Selects(BMS) Elite Touring Teams.

Entering the programs eighth season; the BurnabyMountain Selects are widely recognized as one of Canada’stop field lacrosse development programs, combiningexcellence on the field with academic achievement. Theprogram is overseen by Jeff Cathrea and Brent Hoskins,co-head coaches at Simon Fraser University.

The local contingent includes: Sam Clare (VancouverCollege) - Senior, Midfield; Scott McQuarrie (South DeltaSecondary) - Junior, Defense and Tyler Wickett (DeltaSecondary) - Senior, Attack.

Burnaby Mountain’s high school aged teams (Freshmen,Sophomore, Junior, and Senior) practice on-field twice aweek and attend three hours of weekly study hall. In addi-tion to a three-month practice schedule, each team willcompete in two top college recruiting events throughoutNorth America. Each tournament will feature elite high-school aged competition from across the continent withto the opportunity to play in front of NCAA and MCLACollege recruiters.

This week, the Sophomore and Senior Selects are inBaltimore, Maryland to compete in days one and twoof the Ultimate Performance Lacrosse (UP Lax) FallShootout. In addition to two days of competition, theSelects will tour the campus of Georgetown University, theoldest Catholic University in the United States and homeof the Hoyas men’s lacrosse team (NCAA Div. I).

The following weekend, November 18-22, the Freshmenand Junior teams will return to Baltimore, MD to competein days three and four of the UP Lax Fall Shootout.

Predeceased by herhusband of more than 50 yearsBryan in 2005, she leaves behindsister Shirley, sons David(Denise), Blair (Melody) andBlake. She was enormouslyproud of her 6 grandsons Cory(Leanne), Chris, Sean, Jeffrey,Alex and Mark. She was alsogreatly pleased to welcomegreatgrandson Reese in 2010.She was also a beloved Aunty Dotto many nieces and nephews andgreat nieces and great nephews.Her loss will also be felt by hermany friends. Born in Cloan, Saskin 1925 Dorothy grew up on thefamily farm and many of hervalues and her enormousstrength of character came fromthat family and land. Thecloseness of that family carriedher through all of her years andshe was a vibrant presence at anyfamily event. She married Dad inCalgary in 1954 and married lifetook them from Calgary viaVancouver to Tsawwassen wherethey moved in 1964 and neverleft. Raising a family and having acareer as a librarian caused theyears to whirl by and theyremained active until Dads laterillness. After his death she lived abusy life spending as much timewith family as possible andmaintaining old friendships whilecultivating many new ones thatshe valued immensely. She facedher final illness with her typicalcourage and real concern for theloved ones left behind. She livedas she wanted, fully andenthusiastically to the end.Please join us in a celebration ofher life that will be held on SundayNovember 14th 1-4 pm at theBeach Grove Golf Club. TODD, MichaelThe Todd family is saddened to announce the unexpecteddeath of Michael Todd. He was surrounded by his familywhen he died of a brain tumor on November 7, 2010. Mikeis survived by Virginia, his wife of 51 years; and his children

Hope (Doug), Michael Jr., Blair (Nancy), Aaron and Electra. Mike was thejolly grandfather to Chelsea, Olivia and Emma Todd; Isabella and GreshamHalladay; and Emilie and Nicholas Obadia-Todd. Mike will be missed by hissiblings Richard (Heather), Sarah (Jim) and Tim (Judy) and his nieces andnephews. Mike was born in Shoeburyness, England on November 18, 1937.He lived some of his childhood in Rhodesia and developed a passion forflying while hitching rides over Victoria Falls. From age 15 to 21, Mike sailedwith the British Merchant Navy. He and Virginia immigrated to Canada in1959 so that Mike could pursue his dream of flying. Seven years and 5children later Mike was flying for Air Canada. Mike was part of the AirCanada family for 31 years. During this time he was the Council #1 SafetyChairman for CALPA; served as the Air Canada MEC Safety Chairman; andwas also the Chairman of CALPA’s Special Technical Committee ofOperations. He was instrumental in improving aviation safety standards inCanada. He was an IFR instructor and a mentor to many an aviator. Afterretiring from Air Canada in 1997, Mike flew for Western Express and thenfor 5 years with Sky Service as a training captain. Mike will be rememberedfor his self-deprecating humor, love of the sun, wine gums, erudition andgenerosity. Mike will be missed by his family, by his wonderful friends andby his extended family in England. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday,November 15, 2010 at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Church, 3900 ArthurDrive, Ladner, BC. It is with great sadness that we announce our mother’spassing. She passed away comfortably at home, with family,at the age of 91 years.Beloved wife of Jim, loving mother to daughters Valerie(Summers), Janet (Dent), Louise (Whitty) and son Stephen(Harrison). She was Grandmother to Ron, Stephanie, Brian,Andrea, Joseph, Victoria, Christian and James. She was alsothe adoring Great-Grandmother to 13 great grandchildren.

She will be deeply missed by nieces, nephews, cousins, family and many friends. Millicentis pre-deceased by her parents Grace and Harry Fox and sister, Doris Thorneycroft.Millicent was born in Vernon, BC and moved to Duncan, BC where she attended QueenMargaret’s School for Girls. Her father Harry Fox was owner of Fox’s Dry Goods in Duncanfor many years. After graduating from school, Millicent attended the Vancouver School ofArt, studying sculpture. Millicent continued her love of sculpture all her life and was activein the art world right up to her passing.Millicent married Jim Harrison, in Victoria, BC and later moved to Ottawa with her childrenin 1956, where she continued her art career, doing many sculptures and portraits forprivate collections and commissions – Museum of Man, Newfoundland Museum, DiscoveryTrain, Bank of Canada Money Museum, Post Office Museum, Department of Labor. Shealso taught at the High School of Commerce and St. Lawrence College.Her private collections included works for the Ron Southern family of Spruce Meadows,Calgary; Prime Minister Diefenbaker’s grandchildren; Margaret Trudeau; Terry Fox andmany others.Millicent moved back to Vancouver Island, with her husband in 1977, where they ownedand operated the Dutch Latch restaurant on the Malahat Hwy. She continued her art careerin Vancouver and taught sculpture at the Silk Purse Art Studio in West Vancouver, for 5years. She moved to Tsawwassen in 2001 to live with her daughter Janet, continuing toteach and exhibiting her works.She will be remembered for her love and kindness by friends and family as well as herpositive and energetic outlook on life.A memorial celebration of Millicent’s life will be held at St. David’s Anglican Church, 1115- 51A Street, Delta BC (Tsawwassen) on Sunday, November 14, 2010, at 2:00 PM.(Refreshments to follow in Church Hall). www.stdavidsdelta.com

After a courageous battle,Marilou passed away peacefullywith her loving family at her side.She is survived by husband Hal(Harold); children Bruce (Tara),Karen (Wayne) and Ken (Kirsten);grandchildren Rachel, Nolan,David, Charlie, Ayla and Jordan;sisters Gem (Pete), Babs, andLyle (Sandra); and her extendedfamily, Jay (Jeanette), Todd, Pam(Dave), (Perry), their childrenDanielle, Coulson, Matthew,Elisabeth, Taylor, Jesse & Jake.Marilou lived her life to the utmost,traveling, revell ing in hergrandchildren’s lives, being withfriends, and initiating a party forany reason. She will be missed byall who were lucky enough to bepart of her amazing life.
