As I write this article, I’m enjoying these “days of summer”. Even thought the

first day of fall has come and gone, the temperature is near 90o . I can’t help but

notice that things in my garden are still growing. This, of course, makes me think

of Alpha Pi State’s 2013-2015 theme, “Growing and Walking Together.” Just as

garden plants need water, sunshine, and good soil to grow, we as teachers and

DKG members need each other to grow as teachers.

As I visited Alpha Pi State chapters this year, we looked for ways to mentor new

teachers, ways to help one another, and ways to help parents – again, all for the

benefit of the students.

As members of Delta Kappa Gamma, we need to constantly look for ways to im-

prove our chapters and make them grow. We need to make our chapters ap-

pealing and accessible not only to prospective members, but also to our veteran

members. Yes, we want to get lots of new members, but we also want to keep

the members we already have. At your next chapter meeting, brainstorm on

some new and fun ways to make your chapter grow. Then, at our 2015 Alpha Pi

State Convention share these ideas with our sister chapters.

So, in keeping with our theme, teachers, dig into this school year and grow to-

gether with your fellow educators.

All Roads Led to the DKG International Convention in Indianapolis, IN

The 2014 DKG International Convention week was filled with meetings, workshops, and entertainment plus a little bit of shop-ping at the Market with convention vendors. The three keynote speakers informed, inspired, and challenged the audience:

Sarah Sladek, the first keynote speaker who is the founder and CEO of XYZ University, provided concrete and effective steps to attract and retain members of all ages. She is the author of The End of Membership as WE Know It, which specializes in creating future-focus that will successfully reach today’s younger generation.

Ron Rosenberg, the second keynote speaking, is a nationally recognized award-winning expert on marketing and cus-tomer service. He provided techniques, ideas, and clues for remembering names and faces. He put the audience to work by demonstrating creative ways to double a person’s memory.

The third keynote speaker Dr. Ellen J. Kennedy stated that human trafficking is one of the world’s fastest growing crimi-nal activities and challenged the audience to become advocates of innocent people by combating racism and prejudice, prose-cuting perpetrators, and remembering those who have suffered because of injustice. The US Forum speaker was Jones Loflin, who is an author and leadership speaker. He led the attendees through a process to reach consensus and develop an action plan on a legislative issue. Using the process, the regions identified the following key issues: non-educators, especially corporations, controlling education; the detriment of connecting student tests scores to teach-er evaluation/performance pay; human trafficking and its implication of children’s lives and education; performance levels of American students; and safety issues for both students and educators. The high-light of the week for the South Dakota delegation was when Elizabeth Wood was nominated for a position on the DKG International Nomination Committee and was successful in winning the election. Over a hundred workshops were offered for people to attend, participate, and learn.

The DKG International Convention and the Northwest Regional Conference are great places to renew old friendships and to cre-ate new friendships that will last a lifetime. Please consider attending the Northwest Region Conference in Regina, Saskatche-wan, Canada in 2015.

Kappa Chapter:

We served the food Banquet in July with everyone bringing the food

and serving the meal to 200 plus guests.

Our fall back to school meeting started with pampering ourselves. The

Lake Area Cosmetology students gave manicures and pedicures to the mem-

bers that would like the service. After our meeting, Teri Cordrey gave a

tour of Lake Area Technical Insti-

tute to our members. She explained

about the new technology in equip-

ment and the collaborations with

businesses to help improve the skills

of the students. What a beautiful

building and amazing equipment!

Our own Joy Halling displayed

her paintings at Starbuck and was

featured as “an afternoon with the

artist”.

October started with South Da-

kota Teacher Retirement presenting

What Women Need to Know about

Finances and Retirement. Several

guests attended the meeting.
