Any person that is looking to run for the HOA or the Rec Board must take a class that is being run through the Alliance (THE HOA CERTIFICATION CLASS). Speak to any officer on the board and they will give you the information. Before taking the class, you would first have to be elected to serve on the board. Our BOARD OF DIRECTORS meetings are always on the second Tuesday of every month starting at 7:30 PM sharp. We have 3 HOA Homeowners Meetings each year - the 4 th Tuesday in OCTOBER, JANUARY, and MARCH and our Annual Meeting and Elections on the third Tuesday of DECEMBER (December 19). Lew was also on the board for many years and served significantly in this community. I wish their families our sincere con- dolences and no more sorrows. My final thoughts are with our snowbirds. I would like to welcome back all our neighbors and friends and wish everyone a Happy and Healthy Holiday and winter season. With the last name of Solomon, I have had no choice but to make the search for “wisdom” a lifelong goal. Not that I have always been successful; but, I have tried. Wisdom comes from many places, many people and most actions one takes along this life’s journey. I have been blessed to be open to most of those teachings. I am learning now through a new undertaking - yoga - to seek wisdom through introspection of both my body and mind. As I grow stronger in both, I hope to continue to learn how to better interact with the world around me, to achieve a state of peace that I might then convey to those with whom I come in contact. I have not forgotten the lessons I have learned from my rab- bis and wonderful teachers of Judaism, however. I plan to incorporate all my life’s lessons as I go forward on my jour- ney. I look forward to the season change that I will experience over the next month before returning to Florida. I know I will once again embrace the colors and cool weather and all of the joys of Autumn. That is the future. Now a last look back - This has been a year of great losses for me as well. I acknowledge the sadness it has brought to my feet. The good- byes have not been easy. I will hold those people close to my heart and wish them the peace they deserve. While I forgive any who have hurt me, I now atone for and ask for- giveness of anyone whom I have hurt knowingly or unknow- ingly. I wish all who observe, L’Shana Tova and to All, a healthy and happy year. As we ask to be returned to ourselves in days of old, we start anew…. Linda

As the Jewish New Year approaches, Jews all over the world begin to assess their accomplishments and shortcom-ings, their happiness and joys, their regrets and disappoint-ments. Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND

MISS CONGENIALITY

his one is from the All’s Well that Ends Well department.

Maybe. Time will tell. A couple of years ago, I told you about going camping on my summer vacation. No, I’m no good at building fires, hunting or fishing for dinner or any of that the outdoor stuff. Ronnie – that’s my wife – and I didn’t go camping. It’s just that the house we hired in Massachusetts was so deplorable it felt like camping. Well, let me tell you, the joint we hired this summer made two years ago look like the Taj Mahal. I probably shouldn’t have said that. You see, the more-than-humble abode we hired this year belongs to Ron-nie’s cousin. Oh well, maybe Ronnie won’t read this col-umn and she’ll continue to talk to me. It was really a miserable vacation. The drive to Massa-chusetts was horrendous. We were swept into a three-hour detour off Route 95 due to a fatal accident, slowed down by another six-car crash and passed a motorcyclist being tended to by fellow cyclists in the middle of the highway. I guess I shouldn’t complain. I mean, I wasn’t the Route 95 fatality, my automobile wasn’t one of the six in the crash and I wasn’t stretched out on the highway being comforted by a group of motorcyclists. So, what really made the trip so damn torturous? Lay-la, my kitty, was sick along the way and when Layla’s not well, Ronnie and I hurt. Layla is a beautiful little kitty and so affectionate that I swear, if they ever had a Miss America competition for kitties, Layla would be named Miss Con-geniality. We got Layla from the Peggy Adams shelter. We didn’t pick her out, she picked us out. As soon as we arrived at the shelter, she came running to us and wouldn’t leave us alone. This little girl wanted to be adopted. Layla came with a major infec-tion to her mouth that was never treated at the shelter. It was a mild case of gingivitis at the time (her papers indicated in very small print). It became some sort of advanced gingivitis and flared up en route to Massa-chusetts. Ronnie and I called ahead to set a veterinarian appointment the moment we arrived. She had become a recluse, keeping to herself; alone in her suffering. The doctor there gave her some shots to keep her comfortable while we were in Massachusetts, but told us all of Layla’s teeth would have to be extracted. It would take four pro-cedures, the vet told us, a quarter of her teeth coming out each time. Ronnie and I cut our trip north short so we could get back to Florida and begin Layla’s treatments. Again, we

called ahead and made an appointment with a new vet, Dr. Armstrong as soon as we returned. Dr. Armstrong told us the vet in Massachusetts was wrong. He said Layla had gingivitis along with an aller-gy and wanted to treat her with antibiotic and allergy shots and then see her again in three to four weeks. So far; so good. Layla has been back to her charming self, Miss Congeniality. Some people suggested we should have returned Layla to the shelter when we learned about her illness. Never happen. She’s an important part of the family. But the Peggy Adams Shelter should have treated her before it became a serious problem. Every year, members of the After Six Club vote for the charity it’s going to support for the year. I always vote for the Peggy Adams Shelter. Never again.

The House at the Edge of Night by Catherine Banner

“But islands can only exist/if we have loved in them.” Derek Wolcott Amadeo Espositos’s first sight of the island of Castellamare is ‘a low and brooding thing

on the horizon, no more than a rock in the water.” On one side are the lights of Sicily; on the other nothing but blackness stretching all the way to Africa. Esposito arrives on the island to fill the position of doctor. He is desperate for work and the only position available is at Castellamare. It is the beginning of the Twentieth Century and Esposito, a foundling from Flor-ence, taken in and trained in medicine by a doctor, finds himself on this tiny rocky island where there are caves that are said to be ‘weeping.’ He arrives just in time for the annual festival commemorating the island’s patron saint, Sant’Agata who saved the island from a plague of sorrows. This tale is told to Amadeo by Pina, the local school teacher, and he writes it down in a red journal and he continues to write down the various folk tales that he hears on the island. The islanders initially embrace him but he has an affair with the local count’s wife and then marries the beautiful Pina and on the day his son with Pina is born so too is the count’s wife’s son, rumored around the island to be his. This lapse of character brings down the wrath of the count and he is forbidden to prac-tice medicine. Spanning nearly a century, through secrets and mysteries, trials and sacrifices this beautiful and haunting novel follows not only the lives of the Esposito’s but also the other islanders who live and love on Castellamare - a cruel count and his bewitching wife, a priest who loves scandal, a prisoner of war who turns poet, an outcast girl who becomes a pillar of strength, a wounded English sol-der who emerges from the sea. The people of Castel-lamare are transformed by two world wars and a great recession, by the threat of fascism and their deep bonds of passion and friendship, and by bitter rivalries and the power of forgiveness. Catherine Banner has written an enthralling character-rich novel, epic in scope but intimate in feeling. The is-land itself seems alive - a mythical place where the earth heaves with stories. Banner intertwines social history with the personal and familial conflicts in the novel. She also explores the effects of insidious rumors due to the claustrophobic nature of the island. This novel speaks in the language of magical realism much like the works of Gabriel Garcia-Marquez and Isabel Allende. Reviewer Bethany Ao states, “the realism aspect allows authors to paint pictures of places and people so believable that as we read about them, we feel we’re right there with them, while the magic aspect fills in all the spaces with rich colors and fantastical happenings, just enough to keep us guessing…”
