In a Changing World, Dell Puts Control in Your Hands
You can always count on change, and if you don’t have an efficient way to manage hardware, software and
operating system updates, you are not making the most of your resources – even with the latest server
technology. The unfortunate result is wasted time, expertise and money.
Dell understands how important fast, simple management is to the success of your server infrastructure
and ultimately, to your organization. That’s why we provide at no additional cost to you Dell™ OpenManage™
management software featuring change management tools with each Dell PowerEdge™ server. OpenManage makes
it easier than ever to keep your Dell systems updated. And because Dell is committed to industry-standard
functionality, we partner with leading technology vendors like Altiris, Microsoft and Novell for seamless updates
across your entire solution.
Dell Server Update Utility
Dell Server Update Utility (SUU) software
helps you manage hardware system changes
on a single server. By automating tasks and
reducing repetitive steps, it helps increase
efficiency, save time and decrease the
possibility of errors.

The SUU is an easy-to-use tool that automatically compares and updates the server BIOS, drivers and firmware from a CD-ROM. It gathers an inventory of your existing
hardware configuration and compares it to a set of Dell-tested “known good state” components. Users can then selectively update only those hardware features that need
to be changed to match the optimized set. And the SUU has the capability not only to upgrade, but also to roll back versions that may be beyond the recommended set.
Dell tests “known good state” sets on various operating systems to help ensure that your components will work smoothly with each other and your system. SUU also
applies the updates in a specific order to help reduce the number of required reboots.
Dell IT Assistant
For environments that need to update hardware BIOS, drivers and firmware on more than a
single server at a time, Dell IT Assistant (ITA) offers a streamlined solution that applies
changes to multiple servers from one console.
ITA includes enhanced change management functions such as partial update bundles that
allow you to apply only the updates that you need. Similar to the SUU, ITA compares your
existing infrastructure components to a “known good state” set of BIOS, firmware and
drivers. Then in a specific order assigned to help reduce reboots, it automatically changes
your configuration components to match the tested and optimized set.
Working with the Tools You Already Have
Dell is a strong advocate for industry-standards, including driving the integration of hardware and software change management. We integrate our technology with
our partners’ solutions so that you don’t have to invest in additional management software. You can use the same console and process to update operating systems,
software applications and hardware.
Updating Dell servers can be done with multiple management applications. Dell OpenManage integrates with Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS), Novell
ZENworks Linux Management – Dell Edition, and the Altiris® Patch Management Solution™. With these tools you can inventory Dell hardware, alert administrators
about required upgrades, and retrieve updates from the Dell website.
Changing the Way You Manage Change
Rather than creating unnecessary, difficult-to-execute tasks, Dell OpenManage works with your data center processes by providing tools that facilitate smooth
hardware system updates. Plus, Dell integrates with leading third party operating system and application change management software for seamless updates
throughout your solution.
OpenManage change management tools take the complexity out of updating one system or many. Streamlined efficiency gives you the power to more effectively
manage your technology and devote more time and resources to reaching mission-critical goals. That’s change that you can positively count on.
