Storage Direct family overviewThe PowerProtect Storage Direct family consists of the Storage Direct agent, the databaseapplication agent, and the Microsoft application agent.

Storage Direct for VMAX provides data protection for application data that is hosted on VMAXstorage systems.

Storage Direct for XtremIO uses RecoverPoint to provide data protection for application datahosted on XtremIO storage systems.

The following terms describe the supported replication topologies:

Backup

Data protection method that provides block movement of the application data on primarystorage LUNs to a Data Domain system. Also used to refer to the copies created on the DataDomain system.

Full application rollback restore

Block movement of the data from the copies on the Data Domain system to the restoredestination LUNs on primary storage.

Object level restore

Makes the copies that are on Data Domain available for mount to the recovery host. Thedatabase application agent and the Microsoft application agent also restore the files that arerequired for recovery automatically.

Storage Direct agentThe Storage Direct agent includes the following features:

l Provides commands that you can use to trigger the primary storage to Data Domain workflowfor backup and restore operations.

l Provides commands for lifecycle management of the backups.

l Triggers backup and restore operations on the primary storage system and Data Domainsystem through the use of primary storage system features and Data Domain block services(called Data Domain vdisk) for Storage Direct management libraries, respectively.

l Operates on the device level. Storage Direct works with primary storage LUNs and DataDomain block services for Storage Direct devices, not with file system objects.

Note: The Storage Direct agent cannot operate in a non-English environment or locale, anddoes not support any non-ASCII input or output.

Use the Storage Direct agent to perform the following operations:

l Create a snapshot of the production application LUNs on the primary storage system.

l Trigger the movement of data that is created from the backups on the primary storage systemto the Data Domain devices.

l Create a static image for each LUN in the dataset on the Data Domain system.

l Securely manage the credentials for the Data Domain systems and RecoverPoint cluster.

l Scan the Data Domain system for backups that other Storage Direct applications create inaddition to backups created by the Storage Direct agent.

l Roll back a specified backup to its original source devices.

l Restore a backup to the restore devices.

Storage Direct Family

l Manage the Storage Direct backup and scan catalog.

l Manage the lifecycles of the data backups by listing and optionally deleting existing backups.

l Display the Storage Direct version number.

l Validate the content and format of the configuration files.

Configuration file

The Storage Direct agent configuration file specifies information about:

l The Storage Direct agent protected environment, including the Data Domain name andusername.

l Backup and restore source devices or groups.

l Performing restores and rollbacks.

The Storage Direct agent provides the following template configuration files:

l Storage Direct for VMAX environments

l Storage Direct for RecoverPoint environments

Select a template, make a copy of the template, and then modify the copy as required. After youmake the copy of the configuration template file, specify the environment information in the copy. When you set up the Storage Direct agent on the application recovery host, modify theconfiguration file to include the specific details about the devices. You can have any number ofconfiguration files.

You must also update the lockbox with the Data Domain and optionally the RecoverPointpasswords.

Database application agent and Microsoft application agentThe database application agent includes the following features:

l Provides the ability to perform backups and restores of DB2, Oracle, or SAP with Oracledatabase data that resides on the primary storage system to protection storage on a DataDomain system.

l Provides an integrated experience by using the database specific backup and recovery tools, such as DB2 CLI, Oracle RMAN, or BR*Tools.

The Microsoft application agent includes the following features:

l Provides the ability to perform backups and restores of Microsoft Exchange and MicrosoftSQL database data that resides on the primary storage system to protection storage on a DataDomain system.

Note: Both agents cannot operate in a non-English environment or locale, and do not supportany non-ASCII input or output.

Both agents include the following features:

l Provide application consistent Storage Direct backups without manual intervention by theapplication administrator.

l Operates on the database level, so the database application agent software automaticallydiscovers the primary storage devices where database objects reside.

l Restores automatically from a replicated backup on a secondary Data Domain system when theprimary Data Domain system is unavailable.

l Supports listing and lifecycle management of backups using the native database backupfunctionality, and deletion of backups that are no longer required.

l Discover corresponding backup devices. To discover the corresponding backup devices, theagents use the backup link that is established with the VMAX primary storage.

l Provides the ability to perform backups and restores over an Ethernet (IP) or Fibre Channel(FC) connection.

l Supports Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) for backups and restores.

l Supports the Data Domain IPv6, IPv4, and mixed IPv4 and IPv6 networks.

Storage Direct and traditional backupThe Storage Direct workflow can provide data protection in situations where more traditionalapproaches cannot successfully meet the business requirements. The business demands caninclude small or non-existent backup windows, demanding recovery time objective (RTO) orrecovery point objective (RPO) requirements, or a combination of both.

Unlike traditional backup and recovery, Storage Direct does not rely on a separate process todiscover the backup data and additional actions to move that data to backup storage. Instead ofusing dedicated hardware and network resources, Storage Direct uses existing application andstorage capabilities to create point in time copies of large data sets. The copies are transportedacross a SAN to Data Domain systems to protect the copies while providing deduplication tomaximize storage efficiency. Storage Direct minimizes the time that is required to protect largedata sets, and enables backups to fit into the smallest of backup windows to meet demanding RTOor RPO requirements.

Host considerationsThe following host considerations can impact the Storage Direct performance:

l For Fibre Channel (FC) multipathing, verify that enough FC ports are available on the primarystorage system, the Data Domain system, the host, and the FC switch.

Note: The number of paths that are required depends on the I/O load and the environmentperformance requirements.

l For IP network redundancy, verify that enough Ethernet ports and interfaces are available tocreate the redundant configuration.

Storage Direct works with the features on the Data Domain system and the primary storagesystem to provide primary storage to Data Domain protection. Storage Direct uses the followingfeatures:

l On the Data Domain system:

n Block services for Storage Direct

n FastCopy

l On the VMAX storage array:

n FAST.X

n SnapVX

The following figure displays the data movement from the application host to the VMAX array, andthen to the Data Domain system.

Storage Direct enables an application administrator to leverage the Storage Direct workflow toprotect applications and application data. The storage administrator configures the underlyingstorage resources on the primary storage system and the Data Domain system. With this storageconfiguration information and the Storage Direct software executable, the applicationadministrator can trigger the workflow to protect the application. Before triggering the workflow,

the application administrator must quiesce the application to ensure that an application consistentsnapshot is preserved on the Data Domain system.

Note: The Storage Direct database application agent and Microsoft application agent workwith the application to quiesce the application automatically.

In addition to backing up and protecting data, the application administrator must retain andreplicate copies, restore data, and recover applications. The application administrator can useStorage Direct to complete all these operations.

For restoring data, Storage Direct enables the application administrator to select a specific backupand make that backup available to the application host. The Storage Direct agent provides a copyof the data, but not any application intelligence, and therefore the administrator must perform themount and restore manually on the recovery host. However, the Storage Direct databaseapplication agent and Microsoft application agent provide full application integration and end-to-end restore operations.

Basic backup workflowIn the basic backup workflow, data is transferred from the primary storage system to the DataDomain system. Storage Direct manages the data flow, but does not modify the data.

To create a copy or backup of application data, the application administrator or other appropriateuser must ensure that the copy or backup is application consistent. The application administratoror other appropriate user must quiesce the application before initiating the backup operation.Using Storage Direct to create a snapshot on the primary storage system while the application isquiesced enables the application administrator to minimize the disruption to the application.

After creating the snapshot, the application administrator uses Storage Direct to move thesnapshot to the Data Domain system. The primary storage system tracks the data that haschanged since the last snapshot was moved to the Data Domain system, and only copies thechanged data. After all the data that is captured in the snapshot is sent to the Data Domainsystem, Storage Direct creates a static image on the Data Domain system. The static imagecontains the data that reflects the application consistent copy that is initially created on theprimary storage system.

The static image and any additional metadata can be managed separately from the snapshot on theprimary storage system, and can be a source from which to create additional copies of the backup.Static images that are complete with metadata are called backup images. Storage Direct createsone backup image for every protected LUN. Backup images can be combined into backup sets thatrepresent an entire application point in time backup.

With the Storage Direct agent, the backup workflow consists of the following steps:

1. On the application host, the application administrator quiesces the application.

2. The administrator uses Storage Direct to create a snapshot of the primary storage device. It issafe to unquiesce the application when this step is complete.

3. The administrator uses Storage Direct to analyze and copy the changed data to anencapsulated Data Domain storage device.

The following figure displays the basic backup workflow.

Basic restore workflowThe application administrator can perform three types of restores:

l Object level restore from the backup image on Data Domain by using FAST.X encapsulateddevices.

If the restore is from the last backup, Storage Direct first tries to use the local snapshot that isretained for the Storage Direct backup, to optimize the restore performance.

In this type of restore, the Storage Direct agent provides an instant access to the backupimage on Data Domain or the local snapshot. Then the application administrator can import thevolume group and mount the file system of that backup image, and restore one or more filesfrom the backup image to the final destination. The Storage Direct database application agentand Microsoft application agent perform all the steps required to restore the database filesautomatically.

l Full application rollback restore from the backup image on Data Domain by using FAST.Xencapsulated devices.

If the restore is from the last backup, Storage Direct first tries to use the local snapshot that isretained for the Storage Direct backup, to optimize the restore performance.

Storage Direct for VMAX

18 Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide

Page 19: Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide · Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide 7. How to provide feedback Feedback helps to improve the accuracy, organization,

In this type of restore, Storage Direct rolls back the entire image of the target LUNs to thebackup image by using a VMAX LUN level restore. This restore type is most optimized whenyou restore to the original devices where the backup originated. In that case, VMAX onlycopies the blocks that are different from those on Data Domain, which is called a differentialrestore. Otherwise, VMAX copies every block from Data Domain to the final destination.

l Last resort restore directly to the host from Data Domain restore devices.

If you have a VMAX on the site where you restore the data, use one of the preceding types ofrestore. Use a last resort restore only if there is no VMAX on the target site that supportsStorage Direct operations and you have only a recovery application host and Data Domain. Aslong as you have FC SAN connectivity to the Data Domain, Storage Direct enables you toinstantly access the backup images and restore the data to any target storage platform. However, for this restore type, you need the FC SAN connectivity from the recoveryapplication host to Data Domain and the configuration of additional vdisk restore devices.

For any type of restore, the application administrator selects the backup image to restore from theData Domain system.

The object level restore from a backup image on Data Domain by using FAST.X encapsulateddevices consists of the following steps:

1. The Data Domain system writes the static image to the encapsulated storage device, making itavailable on the primary storage system via the FAST.X restore device.

2. With the Storage Direct agent, the application administrator manually mounts the FAST.Xrestore device on the host. The application administrator uses OS and application specific toolsand commands to restore specific objects to any required restore destination device.

With the database application agent or Microsoft application agent, the agent automaticallymounts the FAST.X restore device on the host. The agent uses OS and application specifictools and commands to restore specific objects to any required restore destination device.

The following figure displays the object level restore from Data Domain by using FAST.X.

The full application rollback restore to the original production source LUN by using FAST.Xencapsulated devices consists of the following steps:

1. The Data Domain system writes the static image to the encapsulated storage device, making itavailable on the primary storage system.

2. The FAST.X restore devices are copied to the target production devices, overwriting thecontents of the target devices.

l SAN zoning between the VMAX FA and DX ports and the application recovery hosts:

n Ensure that one DX emulation exists on each director within the same engine. Each DXemulation requires two ports exclusively for zoning to the Data Domain system.

n For FC zoning with a single SAN switch, create zones between four VMAX DX ports andtwo Data Domain ports.

n For FC zoning with two SAN switches, create zones between four VMAX DX ports and fourData Domain ports.

The following figure displays an example of a single SAN switch zoning configuration.

Data Domain prerequisitesThe following are Data Domain prerequisites for all Storage Direct for VMAX operations:

l A Data Domain system that Storage Direct supports.

l IP connectivity to the Data Domain systems on TCP port 3009.

l DD Boost service is enabled and then a storage unit is created.

l Block services for Storage Direct are enabled on the Data Domain system.

Data Domain block services for Storage Direct allow you to create devices, device groups, anddevice pools. The DD Boost service allows you to configure storage units. Block services alsoprovide additional functionality, such as creating static images (snapshots) and replicatingdata.

The Data Domain Operating System Command Reference Guide provides more information aboutthe block services for Storage Direct and the vdisk commands that control them.

The following topics provide more details about the block services prerequisites.

l The Data Domain file system (DDFS) stores the block services for Storage Direct objects. Forexample, a block services static image can be treated as a file that resides within the DDFS.Therefore, replicating a static image is the same as replicating a file. By leveraging the servicesthat are provided by the DDFS, the block service for Storage Direct can efficiently createstatic images of LUNs.

Note: The DDFS automatically defragments backups that are created in a Storage Directenvironment to prevent performance degradation over time.

The Data Domain Operating System Administration Guide provides more information about theDDFS.

Data Domain block services prerequisites

The prerequisites for Data Domain block services operations are as follows:

l Configure a username and password for ownership of the Data Domain block services forStorage Direct devices. It is recommended that you create this user with the none role. If required, other roles can beconfigured.

l Apply a Data Domain block services for Storage Direct license.

Block services for Storage Direct object hierarchy

To plan the Storage Direct configuration, use the object hierarchy mappings in the following table.

DDFS directory Description

/data Top level directory of the Data Domain storage file system. Thisdirectory cannot be changed.

/data/col1 Represents a collection of data, and enables the expansion of thefile system by creating additional collections, col2, col3, col4, andso on.

/data/col1/backup Contains backups of the data and directory structure of thecollection. This MTree cannot be deleted or renamed.Subdirectories can be created to organize and separate the data.

/data/col1/MTree<X> Represents the lowest level of the Data Domain storage filesystem. Each MTree is an independently managed directory. DataDomain allows up to 100 MTrees to be created, but performancedegradation occurs when more than 32 MTrees are active at onetime.

FAST.XFAST.X provides the ability to attach external storage to a VMAX array. Attaching external storageenables storage administrators or other users to use the physical disk space on a storage systemthat is not a VMAX array while gaining access to VMAX features. These features include localreplication, remote replication, storage tiering, data management, and data migration. In addition,FAST.X simplifies the management of storage arrays.

Storage Direct uses the encapsulation functionality of FAST.X to preserve the existing data on theData Domain storage, and enables a user to access the external LUNs through the VMAX array. The Data Domain devices are encapsulated and exported from the VMAX array as thin devices.

Storage Direct supports FAST.X intelligent pairing to allow the VMAX to automatically choose theencapsulated devices to use for a restore operation.

The Solutions Enabler Symmetrix Array Controls CLI Product Guide provides more information aboutFAST.X.

SnapVXSnapVX is a snapshot mechanism that is available on the VMAX array. The VMAX to Data Domainworkflow uses SnapVX technology to create snapshots on the VMAX array and efficiently movedata to the Data Domain system without impacting the host application.

TimeFinder SnapVX provides very low impact snapshots for VMAX data volumes. Users can assignnames to identify their snapshots, and can optionally set automatic expiration dates on each

snapshot. SnapVX provides the ability to manage consistent point in time copies for storagegroups with a single operation.

The Solutions Enabler TimeFinder Family CLI User Guide provides more information about SnapVX.

Solutions EnablerSolutions Enabler is an interface that enables the application administrator or other user toconfigure storage resources, take snapshots, and perform other operations on the VMAX array. Toperform supported operations on the VMAX array, such as taking local data snapshots, a script orexternal management entity can use Solutions Enabler.

The Solutions Enabler Array Management CLI User Guide provides more information about SolutionsEnabler.

Note: When you install Solutions Enabler, configure it to use the same user account on theapplication recovery host as the Storage Direct agent. The Solutions Enabler documentationprovides information on how to configure a user account without root access.

Storage Direct for VMAX supported replication topologiesStorage Direct for VMAX supports several replication topologies.

Supported VMAX Symmetrix Remote Data Facility replication topologiesStorage Direct supports several Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) configurations andtopologies.

The Storage Direct section for release 19.2 in the eLab Navigator at https://elabnavigator.emc.com/eln/modernHomeDataProtection provides details about supportedenvironments and platforms.

Note: The first full backup after a full restore triggers a full SRDF replication.

The following VMAX documentation provides details about the interaction between SRDF andSnapVX:

SRDF/S

The Storage Direct agent is agnostic to SRDF/S. A user can decide what sites to backup and whatsites to restore to. To perform a rollback restore at site 2, a user must suspend SRDF/S, performthe rollback restore, and then restore the link.

Different from the Storage Direct agent, the database application agent discovers the SRDF/S linkand corresponding site 2 devices. In addition to backing up from site 1 devices, the databaseapplication agent can perform backups from site 2 automatically when configured to do so. Thedatabase application agent can also perform rollback from site 2 to site 1 automatically when theagent is running from the application host at site 1.

Storage Direct for VMAX

28 Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide

Page 29: Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide · Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide 7. How to provide feedback Feedback helps to improve the accuracy, organization,

Note: The database application agent cannot perform backups concurrently at site 1 and site 2in the same backup job.

It does not matter which site a backup is taken from, the Storage Direct agent or the databaseapplication agent can enable or perform an object level restore to a recovery host on any site.Restore devices must be provisioned to the recovery host.

Note: With the database application agent, rollback restore at site 2 is not supported becausedata is always rolled back to the original VMAX source devices at site 1.

In the following diagram, a source LUN referred to as R1 on the site 1 array is associated with asource LUN referred to as R2 on the site 2 array. The SRDF/S software maintains continuoussynchronization of the two sources by copying all changes from the R1 LUN to the R2 LUN.

Refer to the PowerProtect Storage Direct Agent Installation and Administration Guide andPowerProtect Database Application Agent Installation and Administration Guide for configurationdetails.

Figure 9 Storage Direct backup from site 2

In the following diagram, a source LUN referred to as R1 on the site 1 array is associated with asource LUN referred to as R2 on the site 2 array. The SRDF/S software maintains continuoussynchronization of the two sources by copying all changes from the R1 LUN to the R2 LUN. Also, site 1 and site 2 have a Fibre Channel connection to their own Data Domain Restorer (DDR). Thereis no Data Domain replication between the DDRs.

In this topology, frequent backups can be taken at site1, and less frequent backups can be taken atsite 2 using the SRDF/S link.

Figure 10 Storage Direct backup from site 1 and site 2

SRDF/A

The Storage Direct agent is agnostic to SRDF/A. A user can decide what sites to backup and whatsites to restore to. To perform a rollback restore, a user must suspend SRDF/A, and then restorethe link.

The database application agent can back up and roll back from site 1.

It does not matter which site a backup is taken from, the Storage Direct agent or the databaseapplication agent can enable or perform an object level restore to a recovery host on any site.Restore devices must be provisioned to the recovery host.

NOTICE If a snapshot and backup are performed using a site 2 device, the data is a laggedcopy of the production data. Therefore, if the application data flushes any data during quiescemode, data may not be captured on site 2 when a snapshot is taken from site 2. In this case, toensure that the remote target datafile is updated with quiesced data before a snapshot andbackup are performed on the R2 device, use a SRDF checkpoint command.

SRDF/Metro

Storage Direct provides limited support for SRDF/Metro. For an overview of SRDF/Metro andinformation about best practices, refer to the SRDF/Metro Overview and Best Practices TechnicalNotes.

Storage Direct for VMAX

Page 31: Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide · Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide 7. How to provide feedback Feedback helps to improve the accuracy, organization,

The following figure displays the only SRDF/Metro topology that Storage Direct agents support.

Figure 11 SRDF/Metro topology

Note: If the application host is a single host, multipathing is required.

In the diagram, a source LUN referred to as R1 on the site 1 array is associated with a source LUNreferred to as R2 on the site 2 array.

Storage Direct supports a SRDF/Metro topology that has the following characteristics:

l Both VMAX arrays have a Fibre Channel network connection to the same Data Domain.

l Storage Direct FAST.X backup and restore devices are configured for both VMAX arrays.

l Storage Direct is aware of the SRDF/Metro device status and can perform a backup from thesuitable device in the pair.

l Restores are performed from the Data Domain or VMAX local snapshot to the R1 device that isread/write accessible at the time of the restore.

l On the application host systems, Solutions Enabler 8.4 or later is installed.

l Storage Direct supports all SRDF/Metro witness configurations. Refer to the Solutions EnablerSRDF Family CLI User Guide for more information about witness configurations.

Storage Direct for VMAX

Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide 31

Page 32: Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide · Dell EMC PowerProtect Storage Direct Solutions Guide 7. How to provide feedback Feedback helps to improve the accuracy, organization,

To configure SRDF/Metro for Storage Direct, the storage administrator must create the initialSnapVX link from both R1 and R2 devices to their FAST.X encapsulated backup devices.

Note: The Storage Direct agent is completely agnostic to multipathing or anything else in thehost I/O stack, for example, applications, file system, volume managers, and so on. Thedatabase application agent is not agnostic to multipathing.

The following are additional configuration considerations and requirements for Storage Directagent and database application agent operations.

Storage Direct agent backup operations

l The Storage Direct agent configuration file must specify the R1 or R2 SYMID and DEVIDor the device group that contains these identifiers. Refer to the PowerProtect StorageDirect Agent Installation and Administration Guide for information about how to specifydevices or groups in the BACKUP_SOURCE_DEVICES section of the VMAX configurationfile.

l The Storage Direct agent checks whether a specified device is a part of a SRDF group andwhether that group is part of a Metro configuration.

l When an application data is on one or more devices that are part of a SRDF/Metro group, the Storage Direct agent automatically discovers the R1-R2 pair for the devices, and thenuses the R1 device for the rest of operations.

Storage Direct agent rollback operations

l Before performing a rollback, the SRDF link must be manually suspended.

l The Storage Direct agent always rolls back to the R1 device that is associated with thedevices that are backed up. The Storage Direct agent can be configured to filter therollback operation. Refer to the PowerProtect Storage Direct Agent Installation andAdministration Guide for information about how to filter devices with theRESTORE_SOURCE_DEVICES section of the VMAX configuration file.

l If a device is no longer part of the SRDF/Metro, the rollback behavior is the same as anon-SRDF/Metro configuration and the rollback is performed to the original source devicethat was backed up.

l If the goal is to restore to a different SYMID:DEVID than the R1 device, the Storage Directagent must be configured to specify the different rollback target devices. Refer to thePowerProtect Storage Direct Agent Installation and Administration Guide for informationabout how to specify rollback target devices with the ROLLBACK_TARGET_DEVICESsection of the VMAX configuration file.

l Rollback operations use the local SnapVX snapshot only when the local snapshot on therestore target VMAX is the same as the one that was used during the backup for thespecified backup identifier. Otherwise, the rollback uses the copy on the Data Domain.

l After performing a rollback, the SRDF link must be re-established.

l The Storage Direct agent can be configured to disable SRDF/Metro support. Refer to thePowerProtect Storage Direct Agent Installation and Administration Guide for informationabout how to update the Storage Direct agent configuration file to disable SRDF/Metrosupport.

Storage Direct agent object level restore operations

l During an object level restore through a FAST.X encapsulated restore device, the restoreworkflow by default always allocates the restore device from the VMAX array where thebackup is taken from, that is the R1 site at the backup time.

Storage Direct 4.6 introduced support for the object level restore from the other VMAXsystem when you set VMAX_FASTX_RESTORE_SG=[<SymmID>]:<storage_group>.

Database application agent backup operations

l If the application data is on one or more devices that are part of a SRDF/Metro group, thedatabase application automatically discovers the R1-R2 pair for the devices, and then usesthe R1 device for the rest of the operations.

Database application agent rollback operations

l Before performing a rollback, the SRDF link must be manually suspended.

l The database application agent discovers the R1 at the time of the restore and rolls backto R1 regardless of which site was used during the backup. If the device is no longer partof the SRDF/Metro, the rollback behavior is the same as a non-SRDF/Metro configurationand the rollback is performed to the original source device that was backed up.

When the operation is a rollback to alternate LUNs, the rollback is performed to thespecified destination. The Database Application Agent Installation and Administration Guideprovides more details.

l Rollback operations use the local SnapVX snapshot only when the local snapshot on therestore target VMAX is the same as the one that was used during the backup for thespecified backup identifier. Otherwise, the rollback uses the copy on the Data Domainsystem.

l After performing a rollback, the SRDF link must be re-established.

Database application agent object level restore operations

l During an object level restore through a FAST.X encapsulated restore device, the restoreworkflow by default always allocates the restore device from the VMAX array where thebackup is taken from, that is the R1 site at the backup time.

The database application agent 4.6 introduced support for the object level restore fromthe other VMAX system when you setVMAX_FASTX_RESTORE_SG=[<SymmID>]:<storage_group>.

Storage Direct for XtremIO overviewStorage Direct for XtremIO is a physical hardware solution that integrates the primary storage onXtremIO and the protection storage on the Data Domain system.

Storage Direct provides block movement of the data on application source LUNs to the DataDomain system.

Storage Direct for XtremIO works with the features on the Data Domain system, the RecoverPointappliance, and the XtremIO cluster to provide primary storage to Data Domain protection. StorageDirect uses the following features:

l On the Data Domain system:

n Block services for Storage Direct

n FastCopy

n DD Boost

l On the RecoverPoint appliance:

n Catalog for RecoverPoint appliance

n Consistency groups

l On the XtremIO cluster:

n Snapshots

Storage Direct for XtremIO enables an application administrator to leverage the Storage Directworkflow to protect applications and application data. The storage administrator configures theunderlying storage resources on the primary storage system and the Data Domain system. Withthis storage configuration information, RecoverPoint, and the Storage Direct software, theapplication administrator can trigger the workflow to protect the application. Before triggering theworkflow, the application administrator must quiesce the application to ensure that an applicationconsistent snapshot will be preserved on the Data Domain system.

Note: The Storage Direct database application agent works with the application to quiesce theapplication automatically.

In addition to backing up and protecting data, the application administrator must retain andreplicate copies, restore data, and recover applications. The combination of Storage Direct and theprimary storage to Data Domain workflow enables the application administrator to complete all ofthese operations.

For restoring data, Storage Direct enables the application administrator to select a specific backupand make that backup available to the application host. With the Storage Direct agent, theoperations to mask, mount, and restore the data must be performed manually on the primarystorage system. The Storage Direct agent provides a copy of the data but not any applicationintelligence.

Storage Direct for XtremIO topology requirementsStorage Direct for XtremIO requires both IP network (LAN or WAN) and Fibre Channel (FC)storage area network (SAN) connectivity.

The following table lists the required topologies for connecting each component.

For IP connections between the RecoverPoint appliances and the Data Domain system, theData Domain ifgroup feature provides improved network performance by spreading thenetwork traffic across multiple network interfaces. The Data Domain Operating SystemAdministration Guide provides more details about ifgroups.

l FC zoning between the RecoverPoint appliance and the XtremIO cluster.

FC zoning is optional between the RecoverPoint appliance and the Data Domain system, and isonly required if DD Boost over FC is used for communication between the RecoverPointappliance and the Data Domain system:

n Zone at least two initiators from the RecoverPoint appliance to the Data Domain system.

n One zone per fabric between the RecoverPoint appliance and the XtremIO cluster. Includeall the RecoverPoint appliance ports that are intended for XtremIO connectivity, and all theXtremIO ports that are intended for RecoverPoint appliance connectivity in the zone.

n Zone the RecoverPoint initiators to multiple targets on the Data Domain system or XtremIOcluster in accordance with RecoverPoint best practices.

XtremIO prerequisitesThe XtremIO prerequisites for all Storage Direct operations are as follows:

l An XtremIO cluster running XtremIO software.

l Fibre Channel (FC) zoning must be configured between the XtremIO cluster and theapplication host:

n Use a single initiator per single target (1:1) zoning scheme or use multipathing betweenXtremIO and the hosts for failover and redundancy. If the FC switchzone count limitationhas been reached, it is also possible to use single initiator per multiple target (1:many)zoning scheme.

n The optimal number of paths depends on the operating system and server information. Toavoid multipathing performance degradation, do not use more than 16 paths per device.

n Enable Multipath I/O (MPIO) if two or more paths are zoned to a Windows applicationrecovery host.

Data Domain prerequisitesThe Data Domain prerequisites for all Storage Direct for XtremIO operations are as follows:

l A Data Domain system that Storage Direct supports.

l DD Boost service is enabled and then a storage unit is created.

l Block services for Storage Direct are enabled on the Data Domain system.

The Data Domain Operating System Administration Guide provides more information about theDDFS.

l Data Domain Cloud Tier can be enabled, but the Data Domain storage unit that Storage Directuses cannot have a data movement policy.

Supported RecoverPoint replication topologiesThe following tables display the RecoverPoint replication topologies that the Storage Direct agentssupport at site 1 and site 2.

Any site that is supported requires:

l The recovery host to have a Fibre Channel connection to Data Domain where the backupcopies exist.

l Restore devices from that Data Domain that are provisioned correctly to the recovery host.

For information about provisioning, refer to the PowerProtect Storage Direct Primary andProtection Storage Configuration Guide.

To configure the Data Domain replication, use the Data Domain management user interface or theData Domain Operating System (DDOS) CLI.

The following list includes the benefits of this configuration:

l At site 1, restores can be performed from the site 1 DDR. Object level restores and rollbacksare supported.

l At site 2, after a site 1 failure, an object level restore can be performed to a recovery host fromthe site 2 DDR.

l At site 1, a restore to a recovery host can be performed from a site 2 DDR.

Data Domain replication with a RecoverPoint appliance at site 2Storage Direct supports a disaster recovery configuration that includes Data Domain replicationwith a RecoverPoint appliance (RPA) at site 2.

In this configuration, each RPA consistency group has a production volume on an XtremIO, a site 1copy on a Data Domain, and a site 2 copy. A Storage Direct agent backup is initiated from site 1and stored on the site 1 Data Domain. A benefit of this configuration is that RecoverPoint remotereplication makes it possible to provide service immediately from site 1 in case of a disaster at site1.

Storage Direct for XtremIO basic backup workflowIn the basic backup workflow, data is transferred from the primary storage system to the DataDomain system. Storage Direct manages the data flow, but does not modify the data.

To create a copy or backup of an application, the application administrator or other appropriateuser must ensure that the source LUNs are in an application consistent state. The applicationadministrator must quiesce the application before initiating the backup operation. Using StorageDirect to create the backup on the primary storage system enables the application administrator tominimize the disruption to the application.

After the snapshot creation on XtremIO, RecoverPoint moves the snapshot to the Data Domainsystem. The primary storage system tracks the data that has changed since the last update to the

Data Domain system, and then only copies the changed data. After all the data that is captured inthe snapshot is copied, the Data Domain system creates a static image of the data. The staticimage of the data reflects the application consistent copy that is initially created on the primarystorage system.

The backup workflow consists of the following steps:

1. On the application host, the application administrator quiesces the application.

2. On the primary storage system, the administrator uses Storage Direct to create a snapshot ofthe primary storage device. It is safe to unquiesce the application when this step is complete.

3. RecoverPoint analyzes the data, and then copies the changed data to a Data Domain storagedevice.

4. The Data Domain system creates, and then stores a static image of the snapshot.

The following figure displays the basic backup workflow.

Note: In the figure, D1 C-t1, D1 C-t2, D1 C-t3, and so on are static images in the vdisk pool. Each column represents one backup operation.

Storage Direct for XtremIO basic restore workflowStorage Direct for XtremIO allows application administrators to restore data directly from therestore devices on the Data Domain system to the application recovery host, without involving theprimary storage or the RecoverPoint cluster.

Storage Direct for XtremIO supports object level restores and rollback restores.

The object level restore workflow with the Storage Direct agent consists of the following steps:

Note: The database application agent automates the object level restore and performs all thesteps required to restore the database files.

1. The application administrator selects the backup image on the Data Domain system.

Application storage configuration overviewApplication storage is the primary storage for application data. This storage often consists of anumber of separate LUNs that have file systems. Mount points or drive letters make the storageavailable to the application host. These LUNs are the source for any Storage Direct backup. Thefollowing sections provide information about configuring or discovering LUNs, and using thatinformation to create the equivalent snapshot target and recovery LUNs.

If it is not necessary to provision new application storage. Discovering application storage on page51 includes information about discovering the existing application storage.

When configuring application storage, complete the following high level processes:

l Provision primary storage LUNs to the application recovery host.

l For VMAX configurations, connect Data Domain devices to the primary storage system.

l For XtremIO with RecoverPoint configurations, register the Data Domain to RecoverPoint.

Provision the LUNs on the primary storage system to the application recovery host first. Thenconnect the Data Domain devices to the primary storage system.

The second procedure, connecting the Data Domain devices to the primary storage system, requires storage management visibility into both system environments. You complete some tasksin the primary storage environment and other tasks in the Data Domain environment. Therefore, you must have one window open to the primary storage environment and one window open to theData Domain environment. You switch between environments as you connect the Data Domaindevices to the primary storage system.

Data Domain sizing considerationsTo plan for provisioning the primary storage for Storage Direct, use the best practices and limitsthat are defined in the documentation for the primary storage system.

The following guidelines apply to provisioning an appropriate amount of storage on the primaryData Domain system, and if applicable, providing an appropriate amount of storage at thesecondary site:

l To accommodate all the application recovery hosts in the deployment, verify that sufficientcapacity is available on the primary Data Domain system. Each primary storage LUN requiresblock services devices of equal or greater size on the primary Data Domain system. One deviceis for backups, and the other device is for restores.

l If applicable, verify that the primary storage system and Data Domain system at the secondarysite have available storage capacity that is greater than or equal to the storage capacity at theproduction site.

To estimate the required logical capacity on the Data Domain system, use the following values:

l Number: The number of LUNs to back up.

l Size: The size of each LUN to back up.

l Copies: The number of backups to keep.To account for copies of the data on both the backup and restore devices, add two to thenumber of backups to keep.

The formula for calculating the logical capacity is: (Number * Size) * (Copies + 2)

The following table displays an example with 10 LUNs that are each 10 GB, keeping five backups.

Application Storage Configuration

Table 16 Sizing calculation example

Element Value

Number 10

Size 10 GB

Copies 5 + 2

Required capacity 700 GB

Note: Logical capacity is calculated before compression and deduplication. Compression anddeduplication reduce the actual amount of capacity consumed.

Capacity monitoring is available at the following levels:

l Logical capacity is reported at the system, MTree (block services for Storage Direct pool), andfile (static image) levels.

l Actual capacity is reported at the system level.

Discovering application storageConfigure Storage Direct after storage provisioning is complete by identifying all the existingapplication storage and computing the Data Domain storage requirements.

The information that is required includes, but is not limited to, the number of devices allocated tothe application, the geometry of the devices created, and awareness of the masking views, portsused, and storage area network (SAN) zoning. The process to provision the Data Domain storageand connect the storage to the primary storage system is identical to provisioning new storage.

VMAX storage configurationVMAX storage configuration for Storage Direct includes provisioning VMAX storage to theapplication recovery host, and encapsulating Data Domain restore devices on the VMAX array.

Provisioning LUNs on the VMAX array to the application recovery hostProvisioning VMAX storage for the application recovery host consists of the following tasks:

l Create a storage group.

l Add the devices to the storage group.

l Create a port group.

l Add the front end ports to the port group where the server is zoned.

l Create an initiator group.

l Add the initiator WWNs of the application recovery host to the initiator group.

l Create a masking view.

l Discover newly provisioned LUNs on the application recovery host.

Note: These tasks are for provisioning VMAX storage for new installations. Some of thesetasks might not be required in all cases.

PrerequisitesThe following are prerequisites for encapsulating Data Domain storage devices on the VMAX array:

l Before you begin, to determine the devices in use, use the commands in the Data DomainOperating System Administration Guide and the Solutions Enabler functionality. Then use thatinformation to complete the tasks in this section, as applicable.

l You must have already provisioned LUNs on the VMAX array to the application recovery host.

l You know or can obtain the geometry of the devices that are created on the VMAX array.

l You are logged in to the host where Solutions Enabler is installed.

l You complete some tasks in the VMAX environment, and other tasks in the Data Domainenvironment. Therefore, you must have one window open to the VMAX environment and onewindow open to the Data Domain environment.

l On the Data Domain system, complete the following tasks:

1. Log in to an SSH session on the Data Domain system.

2. Enable block services for Storage Direct if not already enabled.

3. Create a block services for Storage Direct device pool.

4. Create a block services for Storage Direct device group.

5. Create block services for Storage Direct devices that have the equivalent or largergeometry as the VMAX primary LUNs. Create two block services for Storage Direct devicesfor every device that is created on the VMAX array, one for backups and one for restores.

6. Create an access group on the Data Domain.

7. Add the block services for Storage Direct devices to the access group on the Data Domain.

8. Verify that the VMAX DX ports and the Data Domain endpoint ports are zoned together.

9. View the list of VMAX initiators on the Data Domain.

10. Add the VMAX initiators to the access group on the Data Domain.

l To complete the following steps on the VMAX array, use Solutions Enabler:

1. View the back end ports (DX ports) on the VMAX array and display the WWNs.

2. Display the LUNs that are visible for a specific WWN.

3. List the disk groups that are available on the VMAX array.

4. Use the FAST.X functionality to encapsulate the Data Domain disks on the VMAX array.

l Encapsulating an external LUN creates the VMAX LUN that enables access to the externalLUN. Manually set the encapsulated LUN as the snapshot target. Encapsulating the blockservices for Storage Direct restore LUNs is required for restoration operations.

l The VMAX array must have four paths to the Data Domain system to correctly enable therelationship between the two systems. Storage Direct for VMAX prerequisites on page 21provides more information about path requirements.
