These are not human productivity machines, not knowledge workers but critical machines, such as: Transportation and passenger information systems Industrial machinery and heavy equipment Healthcare equipment Telecom and Datacom networks Building security systems Retail and hospitality kiosks and digital signage An embedded computer is a special-purpose system in which the computer is usually completely encapsulated by the device it controls. Or it might be a ruggedized standalone unit in a challenging environment. Unlike a general-purpose computer, such as a PC, an embedded system performs pre-defined tasks, usually with very specific requirements.

Embedded PCs are very vertically focused market, they each have different needs for I/O and environmental constraints Many of the same internal components of PCs… memory, storage, etc. While the PC market has been in decline around -8% (need to get this number), the embedded market is forecast to grow double digits next several years. There are multiple areas where Dell is adding value in IoT, from edge computing to the data center and the cloud.
