Casey Avenue stage two works begin The first stage of upgrades to Casey Avenue are complete.

The work involved upgrading the northern end of Casey Avenue between Leisure Street and Bridge Road.

Stage two works have now started, during which Casey Avenue will be reduced to single-lane traffic between Leisure Street and the Mackay Museum, with traffic management on-site.

Stage two will be completed by October, weather permitting.

Stage three will involve the upgrade of the roundabout on the Bridge Road and Casey Avenue intersection, with work scheduled to commence in October and wrap up in December 2018, weather permitting.

This project is being funded by the Queensland Government’s $200 million Works for Queensland program.

Shellgrit Creek (old Cod Hole) drainage The aim of the Shellgrit Creek drainage project is to provide increased flood immunity for the residents of East Mackay.

The major project involves the construction of a seven-cell box culvert system, with each box culvert measuring 2.1 metres high by 2.7 metres wide, as well as the construction of associated tide gates at the upstream end of the existing detention basin.

Vassallo Constructions is carrying out the work on behalf of council, with works scheduled for completion by mid-October. Beach nourishment has also been completed at Town Beach.

This project is a jointly-funded initiative between the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program and council.

New traffic signals in the pipeline Design work is under way for a major upgrade of the Milton Street/East Boundary Road intersection.

Signalisation of the intersection will improve traffic management and safety.

The project cost is about $4 million, including State Government funding of about $1.85 million, to be delivered in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

Other projects to be delivered in 2018-19 include: Bridge Road/Goldsmith Street intersection signalisation and roundabouts at the Victoria/Tennyson, Victoria/Lawson and Victoria/Peel streets intersections.

Water supply reliability improved We’ve replaced water mains in the City area recently to improve reliability of supply for residents.

Existing water mains in Ready Street, South Mackay, and Alfred Street (between Brisbane and Carlyle streets) have been replaced.

Relocation of a water main at Mackay Showgrounds was also completed in June, enabling further development of that precinct.

Capital works projects under way or in the pipeline for 2018-19 include water main replacements at Goldsmith Street (Bridge Road intersection), Pratt Street and Bothwick Street, as well as major plant and equipment renewals at the Nebo Road Water Treatment Plant.

Drainage upgradesOur Civil Works team is undertaking a program of drainage improvement projects in the City area.

They range from box culvert replacement projects in West Mackay to concrete lining of “no-man’s drain” between Juliet and Symons streets. Replacement of the floodgate on the Creal Street Drain (adjacent to Queen’s Park) will also prevent flooding of the underground system from high tides in Sandfly Creek.
