Gio (Joe) Batta Garlatti One of my closest friends throughout the last quarter of the20th century was antique dealer Gio (Joe) Batta Garlatti fromMarkham, Ontario. He was, for sure, one of the finest pureartisans of his day. Born in Italy, 1935, Joe, as he becameknown, immigrated to his new homeland, 1956, from one oftwenty regions in Italy, a jurisdiction called Friuli in northeastItaly bounded by Austria and Slovenia. Joe's region wasknown for its wineries. He often reminisced over glasses ofhomemade wine he shared with me from his own wine cellar, stating each time how he missed Friuli wine. He so enjoyedteaching me how to sip and taste wine. The exact area of Friulifrom where Joe immigrated is known as Udine and, for cen-turies, this jurisdiction has been regionally renowned, andbeyond, for its carved furniture, wooden sculptures, artisticceramics, mosaics, wrought iron, copper artisanship andstringed instruments. This is the heritage Joe's DNA broughtto Canada. Upon his arrival, he worked with Markham legend,John Lunau, a descendant of the William Berczy settlers whohelped build Yonge Street for John Graves Simcoe in the mid-1790s. The founder of the Markham District HistoricalMuseum, 1971, John, with co-worker, Joe Garlatti, becamegood friends. Joe helped John move and rebuild the very firstof many historic buildings, a log structure that was moved tothe Markham Museum grounds.

I first met Joe Garlatti and his wife Angela at a C.A.D.A.antique show in the early 1970s. I quickly learned that hewas the very best in taking any piece of furniture needingrepair and magically restoring it. It made no difference to Joewhether it was a table, a cupboard or a blanket box. Bringingeach antique back to its original glory was what he alwaysachieved. He literally was a genius with his massive collectionof antique tools. One could take the furniture he restored andexamine his work and swear that his repair was invisible.Over the years, Joe restored many pieces from The Charlesand Gayle Humber Collection. Many have been long dis-patched, but they are memorialized in Howard Pain's illustri-ous work, The Heritage of Upper Canadian Furniture (seeplates 30, 95, 183, 540, 603, 642, 672, 696, 884, 904, 928,931, 1051, 1059, 1091, 1106 and 1150, all furnishingsrestored by Joe Garlatti before Howard Pain photographedand illustrated them in his famous book published in1978).Those antiques still part of our collection, in 2015, andalso restored by Joe and illustrated in Howard Pain's "bible",are plates 62, 124, 149,164, 253, 513, 890, 989, and 1330.

In 1984, when LOYAL SHE REMAINS was selected as theofficial gift from the people of Ontario to her majestyQueen Elizabeth II, I asked Joe to make a special box withChippendale-styled feet (ogee) to hold a special encasededition of this publication.A brass plate, crafted by Joe andaffixed to the inside of the lid, commemorated the occa-sion. He also duplicated the same box for me, a special giftwhich, someday, I trust, will be handed down to a familymember as a treasured family heirloom.

In the early spring of 2007, I brought to Joe a mid-19thcentury rocking horse I had acquired from cousin, DaveDonaldson. It had descended through our family for sever-al generations via the family of Thomas Alva Edison. Itwas in four pieces. Joe was not feeling up to par but Ipleaded with him to restore the vintage rocking horse. Hetold me after, I picked it up, May, 2007, he had labouredto remove the ugly second coat of silver paint. The restora-tion was remarkable.Today it rests on a beam up at theHumber cottage in Muskoka commemorating Joe's lastcommissioned work if not his last work for anyone. WhenI picked up the rocking horse, we shared a glass of wineupstairs in his lovely home, a house he had built a decadeearlier near Coppins Corners just east of Markham. I won-dered when Joe poured me a glass of his homemade wine

if it might be the last timewe would share such amoment. Ironically, GioBatta "Joe" Garlattipassed on less than threemonths later, July 13,2007.

Left: When the province ofOntario selected LOYALSHE REMAINS as the offi-cial gift to Her MajestyThe Queen, I commissionedJoe Garlatti to craft thewooden box encasing thisbook. Joe stands in thebackground finishing upthe second box he madefor C.J. Humber.

A Costly ConfessionOur minister announced that admission to a church-social event would cost $6 per person. “However,” he said, “if you’re over 65, the price willbe $5.50.”From the back of the congregation, a womanshouted,“Do you really think I’d give you that information foronly 50 cents?”

Grandma’s MistakeMy friend forgot his laptop on the floor of my room.My grandma thought it was a scale. Conclusion: Mygrandma weighs $950.

All I ask is that you treat me no differently than you wouldthe Queen.

I get plenty of exercise — jumping to conclusions, pushingmy luck, and dodging deadlines.

You're slower than a herd of turtles stampeding throughpeanut butter.

Tell me what you need, and I'll tell you how to get alongwithout it.

Young at heart. Slightly older in other places!

If you are given an open-bookexam, you will forget the book.

I loathe people who keep dogs. They are cowards who haven'tgot the guts to bite people them-selves.

Not one shred of evidence existsin favor of the idea that life is se-rious.

Do unto others, then run...

BBeennnnyy

Benny Station began as railside mill townnear Cartier on the Canadian Pacific Railway(CPR). The first lumber mill was built around1903. Shortly afterwards it was taken overby the Strong lumber company andenlarged. Although the station and commu-nity were known as "Benny," the communi-ty's official name was actually "Pulp Siding,"after the post office which opened in 1909.

Once the Strong company arrived, the townsite expanded quite rapidly. It included anumber of homes, bunkhouse, cookery, store, two section houses and the station. Atfirst the mill experienced the usual ups anddowns, but things began to pick up around1913 with the arrival of the Spanish Pulp &Paper Company. By the early 1920s, thepopulation had grown to around 150. ACatholic church and small cemetery wereadded around 1923.

Unfortunately by the late 1920s, thingsbegan to spiral downwards rapidly. The lum-ber mill shut down in 1928 and the papermill followed suit one year later. A zinc mine, built in the 1930s, operated for a few yearsduring World War II, but then shut down. Allhope for a revival of the sawmill ended whenit burnt to the ground in 1943. By the mid50s, the school and store had closed andmost of the residents left.

Today a small handful of residents stillremain in Benny. The community contains afew original and newer cabins. The CPR isstill active in the area.

PAGE TEN THE WOODBRIDGE ADVERTISER CURRENT FROMAUGUST 16, 2018

I went to my camp lastweek or as some of youmore sophisticated peo-ple call it "the cottage." Aremote wilderness out-post approximately 12miles as the crow fliesfrom the north shore ofLake Superior. Don't letthe flight of the crowdeceive you, for it ismuch more isolated thanthat sounds. After about2 and a half hours ofteeth rattling, bone jar-ring, bush road I havemade a big semi circleand arrived at my placeof solitude. It is the placewhere I go to get awayfrom people, telephonesand emails.

I listened to the wilder-ness erupt into song after dark on my first evening there. My mind wanderedback to the sights and sounds I miss from the farm. How every spring it'sbeginning was marked by a chorus of frogs. Although their harmony may nothave matched The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, their lyrics made more sensethan most Rap songs. The pond behind the barn teemed with thousands offrogs singing love ballads to each other. It was a sure sign that winter's restwas over. If you listened closely you could hear the four part harmony. Thecroak of the bass, the sexy alto ribbet-ribbet reply, waiting for her lover. Thenyoung tenor's squeaking somewhere between a croak and a ribbet unsure ifbass bull frog will share. The mature soprano chiming above the din and youwondered if she was celebrating love or her freedom from winter's hiberna-tion.

Another formidable call was that of the "Whip-poor-Will." My FrenchCanadian neighbor called them " Pot-Pourri". Oddly enough no matter whatofficial language you use when you listen to their call, both translations canbe heard. Now this bilingual bird has all but disappeared from our part ofthe country. How I miss the sounds of that nocturnal singer. Legend taughtit came to catch your soul before it departed the earth. So the song they weresinging was believed to be a song about death. Maybe that's why songwrit-ers referred to them as lonesome. Regardless of their legend, standing out-side in the damp evening air, hearing them sing, is missed.

Although they were silent, the sight of a dark night's sky vibrant with fire-flies is enchanting. Their lightshow seemed to be in sync with a symphonyorchestra. Their fluorescent bottoms flashing out Morris Code signals to eachother. As you looked out the window, those beacons on a black night werelike stars from the heavens on your front lawn.

And then the eerie sound of young coyotes finding their voices. Belting out alonely country and western ballad. I can just imagine their proud mother sit-ting close by, admiring their song. All the while, they were hidden from youreyes because of the darkness, yet they sounded so close. We also had youngcoyotes in the house, but they were our sons. They had a nightly traditionjust before bed. Scott would say to Ben, "Let's go outside for our nightly peeand howl." So out on the deck they would go to do their business over theedge and howl at the moon. That sound of them mimicking the coyotes stillresonates in my memory of good times on the farm.

Vernon

• • • • • • •I was very young, but even then I had a good eye for a building. As you droveinto the driveway, there was a huge maple tree with low hanging branches

AAuuccttiioonneeeerr VVeerrnnoonn BBaaiilleeyy’’ss

LLiiffee oonn tthhee FFaarrmmon the right side. One of the branches was low enough and springy enoughthat I could straddle it like a horse and bounce up and down on it. Sort oflike a one sided see-saw.

The house was an old farmhouse design with a porch that wrapped aroundthree sides. The back porch was enclosed and had the well and the washbasin on a stand. When it rained, Grandpa would hook up a system of gut-ters and downspouts to drain the rainwater into the well. On hot days, hewould buy a block of ice and drop it down the well to cool the water.

On the left back side of the house was the kitchen with a butter churn, woodcooking stove, table where the grandchildren ate, and (I believe) a counterwith pans for washing dishes. I didn't get involved with the clean-up exceptto take slop to the hogs after dinner which I hated.

There was a dining room where the adults ate and a parlor where we sleptand the upright piano that my Mom played in the evening for all to singaround was against the wall. The four of us Johns kids would sleep 4 in thebed, 3 across the top and me across the bottom. I think there were 2 morebedrooms but I can't quite remember the lay-out.

Outside the "well" porch, Grandma had a huge black kettle that she built afire under to heat water for laundry or to make soap. Then there was thechicken yard. I was deathly afraid of those chickens and I had to go throughthe yard to get to the outhouse. It's a wonder I can eat chicken today afterwatching them run across the yard with their heads chopped off.

My favorite two places were the tobacco barn and the cow barn. I helped tietobacco leaves one summer and hang them on the drying poles. I loved thesmell and the sight the men in the fields and the wagons bringing the leavesin from the field.

Then there was the cow barn with the ladder up to the hay loft whereGrandpa would throw feed down to the cows. He used to squirt milk into thecat's mouth or squirt us. He would always let us try to milk but I never couldget the darn things to work. Once when my Dad was helping milk, one of thecows kicked the bucket and my Dad went flying back off the stool. We rolledon the ground laughing so hard. He got back at us the next day though. Wewere taking a walk out to the pond to do some fishing and he stopped bysome trees where fruit was hanging from the branches. He picked some andtold us how sweet it was. The fruit turned out to be persimmons and our lipsstayed puckered for hours.

Once, when I was about 6 or 7, we pulled into the drive around milking time.I hugged Grandma and asked where Grandpa was. She told me that he wasat the barn and had a surprise for me. I ran through the chicken yard andinto the barn. I had to stop and let my eyes adjust to the darker interior andthen I saw it. There was a cow and a brand new calf in the first stall. Shewas only a few days old and so cute. I reached through the boards and shecame over to me and started sucking on my fingers. Grandpa said babiesdon't usually leave their mama's side so young so she must be mine. Henamed her "Suzie" and he told me years later that she turned out to be thebest milker he ever had.

I don't remember as much about the house. But I remember the kitchen onthe left side of the house with a small table where Mama and Papa ate.Mama always left the table set for the next meal with the butter on it, andbread and crackers, and simply covered it all with another table cloth. Iremember the back porch with the wash pan and the cistern where we hadto draw up water with a hand pump. We always washed in the wash pan, which was an old enamel pan about a foot in diameter. When you werethrough washing, you simply threw the dirty water out the porch door intothe dirt back yard. They had electricity, but the wiring was minimal and thelights were bare bulbs that hung from the ceiling, giving the rooms a coldbare feeling. The back porch was lit with a kerosene lantern. There werealso bare bulbs in the barn, cellar, and chicken house. If you had to go tothe outhouse at night, you either had to wait until your eyes got used to thedark, or take a flashlight.

If we shouldn’t eat at night, why do they put a light in thefridge?

A pig stands in front of an elec-tric socket: “Oh no, who put youinto that wall?!”

I've just written a song about tor-tillas; actually, it’s more of a rap.

I woke up this morning and for-got which side the sun risesfrom, then it dawned on me.

First ImpressionsWhen my baby granddaughter LeeAnn came homefrom the hospital, the aunts, uncles and cousinswere there to greet her.I showed her cousin Alex the baby and told him,“This is Grandma’s girl.”Alex replied, “You are not her grandma; she doesn’t even know you.”

A lot of people cry when theycut onions. The trick is not toform an emotional bond.

Hear about the new restaurantcalled Karma?

There’s no menu. You just getwhat you deserve.

My Baking BlunderA group of our friends from church were planning apicnic, and it sounded like fun. The only problemwas that times had been a bit tight for me, as I wasa single mother with four children. What did I havethat we could contribute to the picnic? Then a thought struck. I could make a cherry pie! Afriend had given me a quart of canned cherries thatwould make a very nice pie filling. So I prepared the crust, thickened the cherries, andput the pie together. When it came out of the oven,it looked so good and the aroma was wonderful. At the picnic, my fiance, Stu, was the first to take abite of my pie. I saw a puzzled look go across hisface. Then he began to spit out cherry pits. It hadnot occurred to me someone would can cherrieswithout pitting them first. How embarrassing!Well, he married me anyway. And the cherry pie hasbeen an inside joke for the past 48 years.

Yesterday I saw a guy spill allhis Scrabble letters on the road.I asked him,

“What’s the word on thestreet?”
