What is DARE?

Founded in 2001

Independent agenda

Multiple projects

100+ members

Our Vision

Educating the next Generation • Small Rocket Project (SRP)

• Minors

• Bachelor and Masters Thesis

Unique hands-on experience

Large Projects

• Stratos I

• Stratos II

• Stratos II+

• Project Aether

• Stratos III

Our Projects Recovery Department

Designs and manufacture parachutes The drogue parachute

design : hemisflow ribbon parachute survive the high speeds while maintaining

stability. The main parachute

cross-shaped parachute. 15m2parachute -> largest parachute ever

developed by DARE. Carries out research on material and deployment systems

for the drogue and main parachute. Gas powered ejection and pyrobolts

Testing: mortar, explosive bolt and parachute designs Quite unique group in student rocketry societies.

Record breaking hybrid engines

• DHX-200 ‘Aurora’ – The propulsion system of the Stratos II+ rocket

Stratos III

• Launch before the spring of 2018

• Break the European student altitude record for

rocketry

Preparing for the future

• To go higher, more fuel and oxidizer is needed

• Structural weight needs to be decreased

• A new propulsion system in DARE’s portfolio

increases the overall capability of its rockets.

Cryogenic Propulsion team – Goals

• Develop a LOX-ethanol rocket motor • Learn LOX handling and safety

• Pressurized run tank

• Combustion chamber cooling

• Acquire data on cryogenic systems at ‘our scale’

• Quantify the costs and performance of such an

engine

• Create a flight version of the system

Main feed system structure holding all the valves LOX and ethanol flow,

Pressurization of the tanks

Left side is ethanol & right side is

lox

System is sized to fire for 18s, igniter burns for roughly 1s

Expected thrust without nozzle 0.5kN, with nozzle 2.5kN
