Abstract: Over 4000 concrete filled steel pipe piles were installed for a new Technology Center Development in Camden, New Jersey along the Delaware River. The pile capacities varied from 175 to 200 tons. Piles were 16 inch diameter with a 2 inch thick flat plate welded to the tip. Many challenges faced the geotechnical engineer of record for the design, and for the contractors who installed the piles including the presence of existing timber piling from the 1800’s, remnant construction, highly variable sub- surface conditions, pile freezing and groundwater. This presentation will outline the subsurface conditions, pile design alternatives, pile load testing program (static & dynamic), pile installation challenges and the overall management challenges that were overcome on this large and complex project. About the Speaker: Mr. Brinker is the Geotechnical Engineering Division Manager and an Associate Vice President for Pennoni Associates, Inc. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Drexel University (BSCE 1985, MSCE 1989) in Philadelphia. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Ayub Iqbal is the President of Applied Geoscience & Engineering in Reading, PA. AG&E was established in 1979 as MA Iqbal Consultants, and later incorpo-rated as Applied Geoscience and Engineering, Inc. in 1990. Previously, Ayub worked for Gilbert Assicates, Inc. and D’Appolonia Consulting Engineers. Ayub graduated from Bangladesh University of Engi-neering & Technology (B.S. 1962, Civil Engineering) and Carnegie Mellon University (M.S., 1965, Civil En-gineering Carnegie Mellon University, Ph.D. 1968, Civil Engineering). He has two daughters, Yasmine, a freelance writer, and Samina, an architect, and two granddaughters, Joya (9 years) and Ayla (5 years).

Q & A with Ayub:

Q: What got you first interested in the geo-world?

A: I went to Carnegie Mellon University to continue graduate studies in Prestressed concrete, then it all changed when I worked for Dap (as he was called) and many other experienced geotechnical engineers at D'Appolonia Associates during the summer of 1964. Later, after receiving Ph.D., I worked with D'Appolo-nia for about 7 years. At D'Appolonia, I enjoyed work-ing, learning, and solving civil engineering problems, especially geotechnical engineering problems.

Q: What is your favorite thing about your Alma Ma-ter?

A: I enjoyed graduate studies at Carnegie Mellon Uni-versity (CMU). CMU was a small institution with about four thousand students; I had the unique oppor-tunity of meeting students of various disciplines, eth-nicities, and nationalities. My favorite memory is din-ner at Skibo cafeteria with a company of friends from India, Algeria, Morocco, Iran, Israel, Ecuador, and Ar-gentina.

Q: What is something about yourself that would sur-prise us?

A: I took a risk of starting a company to practice ge-otechnical engineering when I was working comforta-bly at Gilbert Associates on geotechnical problems for various nuclear power plants, fossil power plants, and industrial projects. The enterprise I started has con-tinued for almost forty years, and I still maintain in-terest and enjoy working with young engineers en-couraging them to perform work with ‘Clear Goal, Thorough Preparation, Full Commitment, Self Moti-

vation and Persistence’ which I wrote, 40 years back, on the back of a business card, which I still carry.

Q: What advice would you give to students studying a geo-profession?

A: If you like a profession, work with passion. Do not stop learning. The geotechnical engineering field is an area where practice, experience, and continued learn-ing help to be effective and enjoy the work.

Q: What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?

A: Passion, interest, and an attitude to do the best you can do, can take you and your work a long way, and sharing life experience with young engineers helps you to strengthen your understanding.

Q: What are your hopes for our industry?

A: Like any other profession, the better quality of product is achieved when the client understands the work being performed for him. The geotechnical work and reports are prepared based on limited (compared to the extent of subsurface conditions being investigat-ed) testing and available information; successful work is a result of where experience and intuition are ap-plied and analyses are performed to confirm. The more pertinent geotechnical investigation results from understanding the problem (say through reconnais-sance survey and/or Phase 1 work) rather than arbi-trary plan of taking few borings. There is a huge lia-bility problem following a preconceived plan. For ge-otechnical profession, the clearer the engineer and cli-ents can discuss the problem and solution, the better the engineer can serve the client.

Also, the tendency of using text book formulas and us-ing of a geotechnical software without understanding the theories and analytics should be completely dis-couraged as it could lead to incorrect results and po-tential failures. Hand calculations should be per-formed before the use of a software.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do in Philadelphia?

A: Going to the theater, concerts, historical buildings in the City, restaurants and Reading Terminal Mar-ket.

Q: What aspect of your job do you enjoy the most?

A: Every problem in geotechnical engineering is unique; every site has different conditions and project goals. The best solution often results from focus with interest and experience. Most often, I begin with pre-

liminary intuitive solutions, then I do analyses and re-view past projects and compare these results with my preliminary intuitive solutions.

Q: What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

A: As a small business, it is challenging to keep a smooth work flow and keep employees fully engaged. Geotechnical engineering work is becoming a competi-tion based on pricing, rather than merit and qualifica-tions. For a very small non-DBE company, access to state and federal jobs is difficult.

Q: What do you like most about working at AG&E?

A: AG&E is a small geotechnical company, but has been able to work on projects of significant importance near Philadelphia. Example projects include: Market Street Elevated, Blue Route (S.R. 0476) from I-76 to the Turnpike Interchange, I-95 AIR, Navy Yard off Broad Street for Norfolk Southern Loading Platform, and several structures at the Philadelphia Interna-tional Airport (noteworthy was the U.S. Air Terminal Building).

Q: What is a favorite aspect of your role at AG&E?

A: It is difficult to choose. I will mention Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, which is under-

lain by multiple layers of mines. AG&E had prepared geotechnical reports for Runway, Taxiways, Parking Garage, Terminal building, and many other landside and airside structures – all challenging, but interest-ing. One other project should be mentioned: AG&E had worked on (inspected 123 borings and recom-mended foundations) the Market-Frankford Street El-evated SEPTA Line from 46th Street Station to 63rd Street Station, near to Cobb Creek.

EVENTS AND CONFERENCES

GETT 2019

Girl’s Exploring Tomorrow’s Technology (GETT) is a free, fun, informa-tional event for middle and high school girls in grades 5 through 10 and their parents that features successful women in technology. At-tendees learn the facts about how technology careers can be fulfilling, fun and rewarding personally, professionally and financially.

DVGI participated in the 2019 Expo on March 23, 2019, at Phoenixville High School. There were more than 1,100 in attendance (including 800+ girls in grades 5-10 and 300+ parents and educators). We provid-ed an interactive and tasty activity illustrating soil stratigraphy. For more information, visit www.gettpa.org.
