Farewell to Leah van der KooyCommunity Outreach & Senior Spectrum Manager

Dear Senior Spectrum members,

Making the decision to leave DeKalb Medical was very hard, but leaving Senior Spectrum behind comes with even greater sadness. From the bottom of my heart, I want each and every one of you to know that I have loved and cherished every moment with you. Working with senior citizens has always been a passion of mine. I feel that I was given a special gift in understanding the needs and concerns of seniors. Having you all to work with has allowed me to use that gift and for that, I thank each one of you.

It’s been a long journey for me at Senior Spectrum. December marks the 50th trip I have made with our group. Fifty trips! From the get-go, I have tremendously enjoyed every moment of helping to plan and co-lead our trips along with my friend and co-worker, Candice Stewart. I will miss riding on the bus together, having the wonderful meals we all shared and of course visiting such wonderful destinations such as Cirque du Soleil, the Blue Ridge Mountains and who could ever forget that cold and disastrous Stone Mountain trip!!!???

I am leaving to pursue a dream of mine, which is to teach yoga. Most of you do not know this, but I will share with you that yoga helped me through some of the most difficult times in my life. Never did I ever think I would teach, but the opportunity presented itself to join a teacher-training group last February and I took a leap of faith and began learning how to become a teacher. I fell in love instantly and with a lot of courage, I graduate in November and will be certified to teach yoga.

Please keep me in your thoughts as I move forward on to my new path. I am tremendously grateful for the opportunity to begin my journey as a yoga teacher. My great anticipation is only countered by the incredible amount I will miss you all, so much.

With love and thanks,

Leah van der Kooy

“ABCs of Catching Your Z’s”

Massey ArringtonDirector of the DeKalb Medical Sleep Lab

Poor sleep affects millions of Americans, especially senior citizens. Many of us suffer from restless nights, but know very little about treating sleeplessness. Join us to learn the best way to get a good night’s rest. Massey Arrington, the Director of the Sleep Lab at DeKalb Medical will tell us the latest advances in sleep technology and will give us tips to attain the restorative rest we all need for optimal health.

Medication reactions, stress, loneliness and depression can all cause sleep problems. Also, many of us suffer from untreated sleep apnea, which can also cause snoring. The rule of thumb is, snoring is never normal and it’s usually a sign that a sleep issue exists. Mr. Arrington will discuss treatment options to dramatically improve your sleep.

Come prepared with your questions. Massey will be participating in a question and answer session immediately following the presentation. Also, there will be sleep questionnaires for you to fill out to see if you’re experiencing sleep apnea.

We look forward to seeing you there! Your nights of counting sheep to fall asleep will hopefully be a distant memory after hearing this informative presentation.

“Treatment for Varicose Veins”

David Fern, M.D.DeKalb Medical General Surgeon

Varicose veins affect more than 80 million Americans and are a pervasive health problem, especially in older adults. Often caused by genetics, varicose veins can also be a result of the increased pressure on the veins in the lower body due to standing upright over long periods of times. Because seniors have been standing longer than anyone else on the planet, they’re unfortunately the most affected!

Besides being unsightly, varicose veins can become swollen and painful, especially in the legs and calf muscles. Many of us have tried methods such as compression hose, elevating our feet or even medication treatment, but sometimes it’s necessary to let the experts in to help.

Join us to learn the latest treatment technologies used by varicose vein expert, Dr. David Fern. Dr. Fern is a DeKalb Medical general surgeon and has been detecting and treating varicose veins for many years. Plan on wearing loose fitted clothing the day of the presentation because Dr. Fern will be there with his staff and ultrasound machine to perform free varicose vein screenings!

We look forward to seeing you there.

“Lunch at Canoe Restaurant and Audio-tour at the Bodies Exhibit at Atlantic Station”

Senior Spectrum is starting out 2013 with a fabulous meal at one of our favorite restaurants and then heading over to Atlantic station to refresh our memories on the human anatomy.

Tucked away along the peaceful banks of the Chattahoochee River, yet conveniently located in the Atlanta community of Vinings, lies one of the country’s most acclaimed restaurants. Balanced by both culinary expertise and natural aesthetics, Canoe offers a rich, flavorful experience for all your senses. The river waterfront is a tranquil landscape with colorful gardens and walkways for an after-dinner stroll. Chef Carvel, who has a sophisticated Southern style, creates the fresh seasonal menu.

After our divine lunch, we will head over to Atlantic station to enjoy the magnificent wonders of the human body. Did you know that your small and large intestine together are 27 feet long? This is unbelievable to comprehend, much less see! The Bodies Exhibit will open our eyes to a whole new world of what the human body is made of, literally. It will explain why we move the way we do, how we are able to do the simple things that we don’t even think twice about throughout our day. Join us for this interesting audio tour that will take you inside the human anatomy.

“Headache & Migraine Relief”

Daniel Tesfaye, M.D.DeKalb Medical Neurologist

Most of us have experienced having a headache at some point in our lives. Whether caused by sickness due to a cold or fever, allergies, loud noises or tension, the common headache is one of the most widely-experienced health issue known to men and women. For some of us, however, headaches persist and can often turn into the dreaded migraine. Migraines can be debilitating and can result in isolation, loss of quality of life and very often severe pain such as nausea, vomiting and sleeplessness.

We don’t have to suffer, though. Join us as Dr. Daniel Tesfaye, a DeKalb Medical neurologist and headache expert as he discusses treatment options that are available to help when you feel a headache coming on. Many of us rely on Tylenol or aspirin to help when a headache happens. Dr. Tesfaye will discuss what medications to take and other things such as getting the controlling the triggers (certain foods or smells can trigger a headache or migraine) that cause headaches in the first place under control.

Please come prepared with your questions. Dr. Tesfaye will stick around after the talk to participate in an informative question and answer session. We look forward to seeing you there.

“Dinner at Maggiano’s in Buckhead & Million Dollar Quartet”

In the month of March, Senior Spectrum is dressing up for a night out on the town! We are grabbing a family-style dinner at Maggiano’s then heading down Peachtree to the Fabulous Fox Theatre to watch the Broadway hit “Million Dollar Quartet!”

Senior Spectrum had such a wonderful experience at Maggiano’s in the past, so we are going back for more. Maggiano’s Buckhead specializes in preparing lavish portions of authentic Italian cuisine served family-style. There is no such thing as ‘too much’ at this restaurant where the portions are huge and so is the flavor. Better bring your appetite for this one and your stretchy pants!

“Million Dollar Quartet” takes the audience more than 50 years back in time to when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis would meet by chance at Sun Records and record a rare jam session. On that day December 4, 1956, these four legends gave birth to some of the most beloved rock n’ roll hits of all time such as ‘Great Balls of Fire’, ‘Matchbox’, ‘Walk the Line’, ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On’, ‘Fever’, ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ and many more. The show allows the viewer to witness this amazing collaboration and the icons interactions on that legendary night that made The Million Dollar Quartet!
