Definitions of Design: Sriram V, 8405
Design:
Design is a creative activity whose aim is to establish the multi-faceted qualities of objects,
processes, services and their systems in whole life cycles. Therefore, design is the central
factor of innovative humanisation of technologies and the crucial factor of cultural and
economic exchange.
Design seeks to discover and assess structural, organisational, functional, expressive and
economic relationships, with the task of:
• Pleasing final users, producers and market protagonists alike. (social ethics)
• Giving products, services and systems, those forms that are expressive of(semiology)
and coherent with (aesthetics) their proper complexity
Example:
Designing a flower vase exterior – In itself, the activity shows innovation, creativity and
demands that the design accentuates the shape of the object.
Definition:
Realization of a concept or idea into a configuration, drawing, model, mould, pattern, plan
or specification (on which the actual or commercial production of an item is based) and
which helps achieve the item's designated objective(s). - www.businessdictionary.com
Design is the process of taking something from its existing state and moving it to a preferred
state. - Chartered Society of Designers
Product design:
Product design is concerned with the efficient and effective generation and development of
ideas through a process that leads to new products. It is a subset of the design branch and has
to consider a host of factors. The design must satisfy a broad array of requirements in a
condition of balanced effectiveness. A product is designed to perform a particular function or
set of functions effectively and reliably, to be economically manufacturable, to be profitablysalable, to suit the purposes and the attitudes of the consumer, and to be durable, safe, and
economical to operate. For instance, the design must take into consideration the particular
manufacturing facilities, available materials, know-how, and economic resources of the
manufacturer. The product may need to be packaged; usually it will also need to be shipped
so that it should be light in weight and sturdy of construction. The product should appear
significant, effective, compatible with the culture, and appear to be worth more than the
price.
Example:
Design of antennas for communication – The product needs good functionality, aesthetics
and also a hold over costs.

Definition:
The determination and specification of the parts of a product and their interrelationship so
that they become a unified whole.
Industrial design:
Industrial design is a combination of applied art and applied science, whereby the aesthetics,
ergonomics and usability of products may be improved for marketability and production.
The adjective "industrial" put to design must be related to the term industry or in its meaning
of sector of production or in its ancient meaning of "industrious activity". Thus, design is anactivity involving a wide spectrum of professions in which products, services, graphics,
interiors and architecture all take part. Together, these activities should further enhance - in a
choral way with other related professions - the value of life. - ICSID
Example:
Design of product with wide manufacturing range, like a car – This requires the availability
of appropriate methods of production also along with the already mentioned features of
product design. (Most of the examples of product design can also be extended to industrial
design.)
Definition:
Industrial Design (ID) is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and
specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for
the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer. - Carnegie Mellon's School of Design
