2. Verb: A word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence.

There are 3 types of verbs: Action, Linking and Helping

Examples: pitched, am, will throw

Spot the Verbs: It was sunny everyday in Jersey, so we went to the

beach and surfed, got a tan and built giant, towering sandcastles.

List: an action verb, a linking verb and a helping verb Use them to write your own sentence.

4. Adjective: A word or phrase which describes or modifies a noun

Examples: tall tree, vanilla cake, flowing river

Spot the adjectives:

The Sound of Thunder is a short story about a man who likes to hunt increasingly wild species of animals …including gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Spot the adverbs: Eckels obnoxiously pointed his rifle at the trees. Here, Mr.

Travis stopped, slowly exhaled and growled low, “Not now!”

Write your own adverbs: -ly, when?, where?

Preposition 9/18

A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence.

The details that a preposition links + the preposition word= A prepositional phrase Examples: with liberty and justice ; for all

Spot the Prepositions:At 2:00, all of the juniors and seniors rush to their cars in the

parking lot behind the school to get to their houses without regard for freshmen.
