I HAVE MADE HISTORY! ESSAY ASSIGNMENT

A Document-Based Question (DBQ) requires you to use a series of documents to create a purposeful and thorough response to a historical question. Historical documents are found in many forms such as maps, photographs, drawings, diary entries, letters, court transcripts, and law codes. As part of DBQ assignments, you will be required to read and analyze several documents to help you answer the question. These documents must be used as support for the main idea found in your thesis.

Process #1: Read and analyze the question.

QUESTION: How does Mesopotamia serve as a model for civilization?

Process #2: Study source line and document for subject, occasion, audience, purpose, and bias.

DOCUMENT ASource: The Ziggurat at Ur built around the 6th century B.C.E.

DOCUMENT BASED QUESTION ESSAY #1

QUESTION: How have your childhood experiences shaped you as an individual as you begin your high school career?

HOMEWORK: Find 6 artifacts from your personal belongings that correlate with your childhood experiences (can be from middle school) that you would be willing to share with the class. Then, provide a drawing or a photograph of your 6 artifacts in a neat and organized manner. Each artifact should be labeled starting from Document A and ending with Document F. Also, provide a source line to aide a historian in understanding the significance of the artifact. The source line should be a simple statement to provide a point of reference for your reader by explaining what and when the artifact was produced. Name_______________________Block_____

One other experience that changed me was 9-11-01 when the terrorists attacked the World Trade Center. This experience really made me wake up and realize that the world wasn’t as peaceful as a kid my age would believe it to be. The front page of the “Daily Express” showed a firefighter crying, which illustrates that many people in America had a similar reaction.

When I was a little boy, I always loved to build. I built with Duplos, then Legos, and all kinds of blocks. For example, one of my documents shows a fort that I built. This shaped me because it made me think about being an architect.

WHAT ARE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES?

A primary source is something written or created by a person who witnessed a historical event. Primary sources include letters, diaries, eyewitness articles, videotapes, speeches, and photographs. Artifacts are also primary sources. Historians use primary sources to learn about past events.

Secondary sources are written after a historical event by people who did not witness the event. Books, paintings, and media reports that are based on primary sources and appear after an event are all secondary sources. Sometimes secondary sources are the only ones that are available. They can sometimes provide more balanced views of an event than primary sources.

Directions: Read the following examples of sources. Write “P” if it is a primary source on the provided line. If it is a secondary source, write “S” on the provided line.

WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE PASTThere are many different words that we use to describe the past. It is important that we understand these words if we are to become good historians.

Directions: For each word, draw a line to match the correct definition

Word DefinitionCentury “Anno Domini” – These Latin

words mean “Year of our Lord” (after Christ)

B.C. One Thousand Years

Decade Separate Division of Time

A.D. Before Christ

Period One Hundred Years

Millennium Every Ten Years

Determining which year is in which century can be a tricky business. The easiest way to decide is to cover the last two numbers and add one. For example:

1459 is in the Fifteenth Century (1459 + 1 = 15)

Answer the following:

The year 1584 is in the ____________________ Century.

The year 1275 is in the ____________________ Century.

The year 2001 is in the ____________________ Century.

The year 1899 is in the ____________________ Century.

The year 654 is in the _____________________ Century.

WORLD HISTORY 1Mr. George

Date__________________________

TIMELINES AND DATESWhen you study history, it is important to take note of dates. Dates tell you when events took place and help you keep track of the sequence of events. Knowing the order in which events happened makes it easier to understand how one event may have influenced another.

In a reading selection about history, you might see dates such as 300 B.C. or A.D. 300. These dates contain the same number, but the letters B.C. (B.C.E.) and A.D. (C.E.) tell us that the two dates stand for different times.

Directions: Define the terms given below.

B.C.

B.C.E.

A.D.

C.E.

The date 300 B.C.E. is 300 years before the start of the Common Era. It is the same year as 300 B.C. The date 300 C.E. is 300 years after the start of the Common Era. It is the same as A.D. 300.

The following rules will help you use B.C. and A.D. (or B.C.E. and C.E.) correctly.

1. To find out how long ago a B.C. (B.C.E.) date was, add the date to the present year.

2. To find out how long ago an A.D. (C.E.) date was, subtract the date from the present year.

Let us see if you can follow these rules.

Imagine that this is the year 2100 C.E. How many years ago was 1500 C.E.?

How many years ago was 1000 B.C.E.?
