Genderand the Bible

The Media, government and other institutions use the terms “sex” and “gender” interchangeably. But for sociologists they are two separate issues. What are the differences? What are the issues and rules that surround gender? Given these issues, can it help or change how we interpret the stories of the Bible? In this class we will have a lively discussion about the issues of sex and gender and look at scripture for the surprising results. (This is a continuation of last week’s class. Food and the Bible, which was scheduled for July 18, will be held at a later date.)

Victor Force, Chaplain for the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, will be assisting Tom Reid with preaching, visitation & pastoral care until FPC is fully staffed. Victor graduated from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1991. In 1993, Victor accepted a call at the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan as the Associate pastor where he served for seven years. Following this call he served as the stated supply pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Herington for seven years. He is completing his Masters Degree in Sociology and loves to combine the disciplines of sociology and theology in workshops, the class rooms and the pulpit.

Welcome!

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

In a broken and fearful world,

the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing,

to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,

to unmask idolatries in Church and culture,

to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,

and to work with others for justice, freedom and peace.

In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,

we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks

and to live holy and joyful lives,

even as we watch for God’s new heaven and earth,

praying, “Come Lord Jesus!”

With believers in every time and place,

we rejoice that nothing in life or in death

can separate us from the love of God

in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Rachel Norris, Caleb Orr, William Reid, Madeline Rohrer and Logan Shetlar will depart tomorrow for a week of activities at the Presby-terian Youth Triennium taking place at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The Presbyterian Youth Triennium is an event sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Cumberland Presbyterian Churches (CPA and CPCA) every three years for the purpose of gathering Presbyterian and Reformed young people from all over the United States and the world together for worship, prayer, play and community.

The theme for the 2010 event is “For Such a Time as This” - a pow-erful cry from the book of Esther. “For Such a Time as This” is an encouragement to be courageous, to be faithful and to be attentive to God. To listen deeply to God and to respond, with the extraordi-nary gifts given to young people, to a world in need of Jesus’ story and the gospel messages that inspire us to act. And in particular, for young people in the Presbyterian Church to be aware of their call to act as agents of healing, hope, and holy transformation in this world and in this church!

Gracious God,

We pray today for these who go from here to attend the Presbyterian Youth Triennium.

This is a time for them to listen and experience, to learn and grow, to be among others in faith.

We pray for the goals of their mission, and for the witness they will be for First Presbyterian Church, Salina.

Surround them with affection and challenge, nurture and hope, and may the Lord watch between us and them, while we are absent from one anotherr.

In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
