DEEPEN YOUR THEORY. SHARPEN YOUR PRACTICE.

2017 SYMPOSIUM FACULTY INTRODUCTION

SYMPOSIUM OBJECTIVES

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture® is pleased to present a symposium designed to meet an expressed need to explore the mechanisms of acupuncture from several different perspectives, and to examine current scientific research in the field of medical acupuncture. This meeting addresses topics suggested by practitioners and stresses many different approaches for addressing practical clinical problems. An emphasis on evidence-based scientific research is integrated with practical protocols for the serious clinician. Surveys and evaluations from previous symposia indicate that there is a desire for more information about acupuncture techniques that honor the rich history of Asian medicine as applied to the contemporary, Western medical practice.

The wide variety of styles and topics covered in this year’s symposium include: osteopathic techniques with acupuncture; auricular acupuncture; Master Tung’s Magic Points; pediatric acupuncture and shonishin; neuroanatomic acupuncture; veterinary acupuncture; TCM acupuncture in pregnancy; laser acupuncture; five-phase pediatric acupuncture; holistic approaches to chronic illness; Vietnamese contributions to European acupuncture; differently informed approaches to acupuncture in pain management, Han electroacupuncture; and current acupuncture research.

This conference will offer a multi-tiered approach for the understanding and clinical relevance of acupuncture in daily practice. It will expand our awareness of scientific research into the effects of acupuncture, and provide participants with information about different approaches for the treatment of common conditions seen in clinical practice. Clinicians will learn multi-faceted ways to tailor acupuncture treatments for their individual patients. This conference will focus on clinically relevant treatment approaches that can easily be integrated into clinical practice.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?The Symposium is designed for instruction and training of health care professionals

interested in or already practicing acupuncture. Medical practitioners with no experience and those with extensive background in medical acupuncture will find the program useful in their medical practices.

The Pre-Symposium Workshops are intended to provide a more concentrated learning experience where the faculty can spend the entire day focused on a topic in greater depth and with more time for practical examples from clinical experiences.

ACCREDITATIONThe American Academy of Medical Acupuncture® is accredited by the

Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture® designates this live activity (Symposium) for a maximum of 22 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture® designates this live activity (each Pre-Symposium Workshop) for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Symposium Objectives continues on next page...

Learning objectives for physicians attending the Symposium General Sessions. Physicians will be able to:

• Review evidence-based approaches to neuroanatomic acupuncture that cross species, and identify similarities and differences between human and veterinary medical acupuncture and determine ways that shared knowledge benefits both domains;

• Identify evidence identifying patients who are likely to respond to acupuncture and how to apply that knowledge in your practice;

• Describe pediatric conditions such as Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in terms of the Five Phases Model and discuss their management accordingly;

• Discuss the impact of acupuncture on the immune system, immune response, and immunomodulation;

PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP IPrinciples and Applications of Osteopathic Manipulation for Medical Acupuncturists: A Dozen and More Treatment Techniques to Use Monday Morning

Workshop led by Jay Sandweiss, DO, FAAMA. Dr. Sandweiss will present his favorite “Hands-on” treatment techniques for relieving pain and dysfunction of common conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, pelvic, sacral, upper and lower extremities regions. These treatments may be used before or after acupuncture to increase the successful resolution of pain, weakness and dysfunction. These time-tested treatments can stand alone without acupuncture application. Drawing on his 38 years of clinical experience, Dr. Sandweiss will treat attendees to many clinical pearls in a relaxed, playful atmosphere of learning.

PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP IIAuricular Causative Diagnosis: Approach for the Treatmenet of Acute and Chronic Locomotor Conditions

Workshop led by Nadia Volf, MD, PhD and Leonid Ferdman, MD. Practical workshop allows participants to follow Nadia Volf in complete treatment of patients (voluntary participants).

Started by auricular diagnosis, the analysis of visual marks on auricular points indicating the patient’s symptoms and manipulations to identify their cause.

Once identified, the fragility in the internal organ leading to the development of the disease and finding the explanation of its development, Dr. Volf establishes an individualized treatment strategy for each patient, incorporating ear and body points. Dr. Volf will explain a detailed therapeutic approach and will perform the treatment. According to the level of the pathology, the treatment may include the primary meridians, but also tendino-muscular, divergent and 8 extraordinary meridians.

This is a unique opportunity for participants to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of Nadia Volf, to allow them to apply these knowledges to their own patients.

Learning Objectives. At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to...

• Map auricular points and their interactions;

• Recognize the visual marks and find the inner cause of the symptom’s development;

• Treat effectively symptoms according to their inner cause with ear and body acupuncture points in different levels: symptomatic, immunity and constitutional (genetic);

• Identify and prevent the fragility of the body and treat it before the onset of disease.

PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP IIIMaster Tung’s Magic Points

Workshop led by Susan Johnson, LAc. The primary goal of this eight hour course is to provide medical acupuncturists with an understanding of the energetics employed when using Master Tung’s Magic Points. Ms. Johnson will present a brief history of Tung’s Point system and a selection of some of the most commonly used points for daily clinical use. Following this class, participants will be able to utilize the points discussed, immediately, in their own clinical setting. In this introductory course, a variety of Ms. Johnson’s favorite points in Master Tung’s system are presented in depth, with precise anatomical location, operative theory, indications, and crystal-clear digital video footage. These seminars are designed for both beginning and advanced practitioners.

Learning Objectives. At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to...

• Summarize history of Tung’s Magic Points in the USA;

PRE-SYMPOSIUM WORKSHOP IVPediatric Acupuncture and Shonishin

Workshop led by Raven Lang, OMD, LAc. Shonishin is a pediatric method developed in Japan, which is based upon TCM theories from 2000 years ago. It first came into practice in the 17th century, but in the last 75 years has become the main treatment for children throughout Japan. In North America it has been utilized in family practices or in a practice specializing in pediatrics. This form of acupuncture is baby and child friendly, and is easy to administer.

When a child is well, they receive shonishin once per month. When there is a problem, weekly treatments are usually adequate until the adjustments and changes are made and corrected. When a problem is acute, treatment can be performed daily.

Shonishin is used for maintenance of wellness, prevention of disease, and also for conditions of disharmony, illness, or pathology. Treatment will stimulate the immune system by stimulating endorphin production in the body, which in turn stimulates healing. It also addresses the spirit and gives a general wellness feeling to the child.

Shonishin is normally given with a series of tools that are used for a rhythmic rubbing, tapping, bleeding, and scratching along meridians or in areas of the body such as the lungs, stomach, Ming Men or Dantian. Needle insertion is also part of shonishin, but treatment is often done without any insertion. If a needle is used, it is a very thin gauge.

This form of acupuncture can be used from birth until the child is ready for regular acupuncture treatments.

Learning Objectives. At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to...

• Give Shonishin to children of all ages and understand the techniques for tonification or sedation.

• Determine if the child needs acupuncture needles and know how to administer them with ease.

• Teach the parents proactive skills to strengthen the child and to augment the medicine between visits to the doctor’s office. You will learn how to instruct parents with simple daily techniques to do for each child, and to ward off common problems with age-old common sense relationships to weather, diet, and lifestyle.

• Common pediatric problems such as ear infections, coughs, lowered immunity, skin, and problems in appetite, digestion, and elimination will be thoroughly addressed.
