Financial Group 2 Continues to Grow

The Finance/Investment Group 2 met on Tuesday, Octo-ber 24 closing out our first year of activity. We began in June with 5 founding members and closed the year with 9, all from different career paths and investment philosophies.

We get together monthly each year from January thru October in a member’s home to meet as friends, exchange invest-ment & financial ideas and participate in an enjoyable activity. In this spirit each member builds an individual model fantasy portfolio to participate in a fun and friendly competition with fellow members and provide a valuable source of investments for developing a successful Group 2 fantasy portfolio consisting of individual stocks, bonds, mutual funds & ETFs designed to meet or exceed a decid-ed target. We expect many of these fantasy portfolio investments will find home in our - real money - personal portfolios.

A QUIZ

Answers on page 8

Label Lodgic By Jerry Foster

It is hard sometimes when we are trying to be smart about our eating habits but it ALL begins with knowing how to read the labels on processed or packaged foods. Here is how to decode your food label.

What To Look For: Serving Size: This is the KEY to correctly reading

your label. If you eat more than this amount, you’ll need to account for more calories, & higher fat, sugar, & sodi-um than listed on the label.

Calories: Remember; higher-calorie foods can be worth it if they are high in nutritional value.

Fat: Avoid trans fat where possible because it raises “BAD” LDL cholesterol and lowers “GOOD” HDL choles-terol. Beware: A label that lists 0 grams of trans fat may actually have up to 0.5 grams, so double-check the ingre-dient list for partially hydrogenated oil or shortening before you buy.

Sodium: Too much sodium can raise blood pressure, which increases heart disease risk. It may also be a sign of a more highly proceed (& less healthy) food.

Sugars: Even Fruit has sugars, but added sugar max-imizes calories with providing nutrients. Newer labels call out added sugars. If your looking at an older label, check the ingredients for words ending in “-ose” like dextrose & high-fructose corn syrup.

Dietary Fiber: You want at least 3 grams per serving in any product that has grains.

Protein: Protein is the building block of every cell, but the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that adults only need 5 to 7 ounces of it each day.

Vitamins: These micronutrients add nutritional value to food.

BE Mindful of Buzzwords Organic: Consists of at least 95% organic ingredients. The other 5% appear on USDA-approved list are FREE of antibiotics, growth hormones and pesticides Made with Organic Ingredients: Consists of at least 70% organics. None of the other ingredients are produced with sewage-sludge products or ionizing radiation. Whole Grain: According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guides at least half of the grains we eat should be whole grains. Check ingredients list for brown rise, oats, & oatmeal, wheat berries or grains labeled “whole”. Natural: Does not contain artificial ingredients or pre-servatives & ingredients are minimally processed.

The Flying Chicken

The true story of the Chicken Gun. Too funny not to share! Sometimes it does take a rocket scientist! Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch stand-ard 4 pound dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, mili-tary jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum veloci-ty. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields. British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Ar-rangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British en-gineers. WHEN THE GUN WAS FIRED, THE ENGINEERS STOOD SHOCKED AS THE CHICKEN HURLED OUT OF THE BARREL, CRASHED INTO THE SHATTER-PROOF SHIELD, SMASHED IT TO SMITHEREENS, BLASTED THROUGH THE CON-TROL CONSOLE, SNAPPED THE ENGINEER'S BACK-REST IN TWO, AND EMBEDDED ITSELF IN THE BACK WALL OF THE CABIN, LIKE AN ARROW SHOT FROM A BOW. THE HORRIFIED BRITS SENT NASA THE DISASTROUS RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT, ALONG WITH THE DESIGNS OF THE WINDSHIELD AND BEGGED THE U.S SCIENTISTS FOR SUGGESTIONS. NASA RESPONDED WITH A ONE-LINE MEMO......... "DEFROST THE CHICKEN FIRST." (TRUE STORY)

This should make you smile. You have to love little kids. The teacher handed out some Lifesavers candies to her students, and the children began to identify the flavors by their color: Red....................Cherry Yellow................Lemon Green..................Lime Orange ..............Orange Finally the teacher gave them all HONEY Lifesavers. None of the children could identify the taste. The teacher said, 'I will give you all a clue. It's what your mother may sometimes call your father.' One little girl looked up in horror, spit her lifesaver out, and yelled, 'Oh my God! They're ass-holes! The teacher had to leave the room!

Candy With the Little

Why Wait In Line Each Month to Pay For Your Lunch?

Did you know there are already very easy and straightforward methods to pay for your lunch without waiting in line each month? As you know, we have been using a luncheon “pre-pay” process for several months that consists of writing a check to SIRS Branch 98 and sending it via US Mail to Steve Quiggle at his home address. Well, here are a couple of other methods for your consideration to pre-pay for lunch that are even easier.

Use the on-line Bill Pay process associated with your banking account. We all likely pay some or most of our bills using the on-line Bill Pay process that is linked to our banking account(s). The process is straightforward and can be completed as follows;

Open your on-line “Bill Pay” activity at your bank and designate “SIRS Branch 98” as a Payee (this is a one-time activity).

Provide the Treasurer’s address (my address in this case, 3466 Paseo Mira Vista, Lincoln, CA 95648) as the pay-ee’s billing address (i.e.,. where the bank will send the check--free of charge to you), and then send a payment just like any other bill payment. Please ensure the check will arrive at least one week prior to the luncheon.

And, you are done! No checks need to be written of stamps required, and nothing needs to be mailed by you. Once this Payee (SIRS Branch 98) is set up in your on-line Bill Payment Process you can simply select this Payee each month and quickly pay for lunch!

Use Electronic Transfer of funds from your bank account to SIRS Branch 98’s US Bank checking account. This process may require a few more actions to establish but once that is done these money transfers can be made very quickly and the funds are transferred immediately from your account to the SIRS Branch 98 checking account. The process is summarized as follows;

Open your on-line banking “Transfers” activity and designate “Funds Transfer” (electronic funds transfer (EFT)) between your bank account and the SIRS Branch 98 checking account (the Treasurer can provide the SIRS Branch 98 bank account number and checking account number via email).

Designate the $24.00 funds transfer, the transfer frequency (e.g., one-time only) and send the transfer. Again, please ensure EFT are executed at least one week prior to the luncheon.

And you are done! No writing and mailing of checks were required and the money will be transferred immediately to the SIRS Branch 98 checking account. Once the SIRS Branch 98 checking account is set up within your banking on-line Transfers activity you can simply select this EFT activity each month and quickly pay for lunch!

However, the following notes associated with EFTs are provided for your convenience: EFTs between accounts within the same bank are typically free of charge, however there may be a

charge for EFTs between different banks. Many banks offer a “free of charge” means for EFTs with different banks that are less than $1,000 (e.g.,

Zelle Payment Process). You can setup the free of charge payment processes either on-line or with assistance from your Bank’s

help-line Service Representative during the process of establishing SIRS Branch 98 checking account as an EFT payee.

In Summary, both these payment processes can be used immediately to make your luncheon payments electronically

(albeit EFT’s are the preferred method), with minimal action on your part, in lieu of waiting in the luncheon payment line each month. Once the payment is received (again, within one week of the luncheon) we will continue to utilize the Express Table to locate your badge, raffle ticket, and lunch ticket. Also, the pre-payee list on the current SIRS Branch 98 website will be updated prior to the luncheon indicating all pre-payments received, per our normal process.

Furthermore, these payment processes can and hopefully will be utilized for paying your 2018 dues-please note on your

EFT or check that the payment is for 2018 dues. By doing so, the luncheon lines will be even shorter and move much faster than normal for the January luncheon.

At some point next year these payment processes will be used in conjunction with paying for lunches and dues via the

new SIRS Branch 98 website. Hopefully these payment processes will be even easier due to the automation capabili-ties of the new website. Hope this is helpful and please do not hesitate to contact Bill Kemper ([email protected]) if you have questions or need additional information on this matter.
