Family PerspectivesMARCH 3RD, 2019

Jesus warns us not to be hypocrites.

We easily and forcefully criticize and condemn others for their faults while willfully remaining blind to our own.

Broadcast media gives us daily training in doing this and we readily participate

through social media.

Make the season of Lent a season to cultivate the virtues

of patience and compassion towards others and

humble honesty for ourselves.

Pray more. Criticize and post less.

Let us pray: For the courage to

replace criticism with compassion.

FROM OUR DEACONDoes the phrase “Joyful Lent” sound like an oxymoron – you know, where two words just don’t seem to go together? We know that Lent for us is a time of prayer and penitence. A time of preparation and of conversion. And, with its disciplines, Lent can seem to be a rather somber time – no more chocolates at home – no more “alleluias” at Mass.

But there is One who finds absolute joy and delight in this season. We hear the prophet Micah wondering, “Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt and…delights…in mercy?” (Mi 7:18). When we repent – that is turn around and come back – God is delighted to forgive.

Forgiveness is like a health food. If forgiveness isn’t in our spiritual diet, the health of our spirit withers just as our body wastes away when it lacks proper nutrition. This characteristic of the One who “removes guilt and delights in mercy” is the height of love. In forgiveness, love reaches the pinnacle of wholeness, depth and strength and from that comes the generation of new life. And, praise be to God, we receive this new life in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Jesus speaks of the joy of His Father in Luke’s Gospel Chapter 15 in the parable of the Prodigal Son. This profound story would be better labeled as the parable of the Merciful Father. This parable has been called the “gospel within the Gospel” since within it we find the heart of the “good news” of Jesus.

We all know the story: How the younger son requests his inheritance and then promptly goes off to squander it. In his act of giving, the father respects the free will of his son and grants what’s been requested. Knowing his son, the father in his wisdom understands that this departure can’t be avoided. He exerts no pressure on his son to stay nor any pressure to return – likewise God never coerces. In his wisdom, the father gives his son a precious gift that will later make a return possible.

When he reaches rock bottom, the son comes to his senses and, by remembering the love of his father, he finds the courage to return home – to return to true life.

“While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.” No man of means in ancient Israel would ever be the first to rise and go toward a person of lesser rank. But the father in this parable is different from other fathers. All pretensions fall away. He is filled with overwhelming mercy and abounding joy at the return of the son. This immense joy is a sign and expression of the father’s love.

Since the essence of God is love, we can dare to say that, in a way, “God’s being finds its completion in forgiveness. God finds excessive joy in mercy. God is most divine in forgiving. He is most God when forgiving. This is the heart of God’s joy.”

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we can experience in the depths of our hearts, that even in our sinfulness, we are always fully accepted, heartily welcomed and loved by an amazing God.

This Lent receive a double joy. Through the great Sacrament of Reconciliation, find joy in the relief of sins confessed. And too, find joy knowing that God delights in mercy.

May God bless your soul with His great mercy and make it all his!

Deacon Steve

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR MISSION TRIP FUNDRAISER!!!

The estimated total for the “A Heart for Mission: Auction, Dinner and Dance” fundraiser was $25,000.00 profit raised for the Youth Mission trip to Guatemala. Again, thanks to the many parishioners who gave their time, talent and

treasure at this parish-wide event…the 300 people who came to the event, the donors of silent and oral auction baskets and items, the volunteers who ran the event and the event planners. We are so grateful to be a part of such a generous and loving parish community! With these funds and the previous coffee sales and donations, we have raised enough money for all 16 missionaries to go to San Lucas Mission plus build a block home for a family in San Lucas while we are there! Thanks again. This would not be possible without God and You! ~ San Lucas Mission Team
