Ice cool traffic managementThe Ice Co Logistics has changed traffic management systems to drive down cost.

Trevor Hudson, managing director, the Ice Company, says: “Changing to Manpack3 was a breeze. The software has given us stability and is enabling us to control all aspects of our business more calmly and more easily.”

“The software is simple to use and we have already realised significant cost savings by linking information from other functions such as accounts and warehousing to eliminate the manual work involved in some of our processes.”

The logistics division of Europe’s largest ice manufacturer has implemented Mandata’s Manpack3 together with Tracking and Geo-fencing, Driver Behaviour and PDA manifests. Hudson is confident that the system will quickly pay for itself and is looking to roll out additional PDA manifests to its fleet this year.

Shetland opts for Carrier cooling

Lerwick-based Shetland Transport has its first Carrier Transicold Vector 1550 trailer fridges. The nine Vector 1550 units are on tri-axle Gray & Adams trailers and join a fleet of 30 trucks and 96 trailers. They will be used to transport farmed salmon, mussels and white fish from Shetland to mainland UK and Europe, returning to the islands with fresh, chilled and frozen produce.

Space saving handling and storage methods can make a significant contribution to reduced overheads in cold stores, says Martin McVicar, managing director, Combilift and Aisle-master.

“Achieving maximum pallet density in any given area can reduce the per pallet costs, avoid the need to rent or buy extra facilities should volumes increase, and can even enable the size of premises to be reduced,” he says.

“Pallet racking should therefore be as high as the roof height allows and aisle widths should ideally be as narrow as possible. This is only feasible of course if the vehicles used in this environment are suited for VNA work, as well as being capable of prolonged operation in very low temperatures.

“Forklift manufacturers have recently focused on the specific requirements of this market and the Aisle-Master cold store model is an example of how research and development and collaboration with the cold store sector has resulted in a purpose-built machine.

“The articulated design enables the Aisle-Master to work in aisles of just 1.75m - compared with the use of reach trucks which need much wider aisles to manoeuvre this can result in 50% more capacity. Lift heights of up to an impressive 15m enables every inch of horizontal space to be exploited,” he says.

Kent-based Staplehurst Transits, which distributes fresh fruit and produce to wholesale markets, is celebrating its 40th birthday this year – it is also trying a Mercedes-Benz tractor for the first time. The family firm operates 22 tractors and purchased the New Actros 2551 with aerodynamic StreamSpace cab after evaluating several brands. The Actros has a Daimler FleetBoard telematics system, and is maintained by dealer Sparshatts of Kent, which has just opened a new workshop in Tonbridge. The truck is double-shifted, collecting fresh fruit and vegetables from farms in Kent and delivering to wholesale markets at night. Darren Goldup, director, says: “The fleet average is between 9.1 and 9.2mpg, and despite the fact that it’s still very new and not properly loosened up yet, the New Actros is already hitting 8.9mpg. This compares well with a unit from our other supplier, which went on the road at the same time as the Mercedes – that vehicle is on similar work, but lagging behind at 8.5 mpg.”

sainsbury’s home deliveries Fraikin has a second contract with J Sainsbury to manage 350 of its home delivery vans in the southeast. The new contract follows a deal to supply 246 vehicles in September 2011. The vehicle management package includes a 90-minute recovery and repair time and maintenance every 12 weeks at Sainsbury’s stores.

langdon long trailer successLangdon’s four 14.6 metre long refrigerated trailer trial, running since June, has been a “great success”. The Gray & Adams trailers with Thermo King SLX fridges carry 28 UK sized pallets or 35 euro pallets and will reduce Langdons’ carbon footprint by 4.4 tonnes of CO2 per trailer per year.

hs logistics panic deliveriesHS Logistics has added two 7.5-tonne Daf LF 45.180 fridge trucks to its ‘panic delivery fleet’. The new trucks, supplied on contract hire with Ryder, are fitted with sleeper cabs and custom-designed single compartment Paneltex bodies with Carrier Xarios direct drive fridges.

Tesco adds Bio-lng to fleetTesco Distribution is to run 35 Mercedes-Benz dual-fuel vehicles on Bio-LNG. The vehicles will use Gasrec’s refuelling station at Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal that opens to all dual-fuel LGVs in May. Bio-LNG is Gasrec’s proprietary blend of liquefied natural gas and liquid bio-methane. The deal with Gasrec will cut Tesco’s CO2 emissions by 15% with a 90% reduction in NOx and particulate matter emissions.

First Bevan schmitz deliveredCVME Truck Rental is running the first two rigid reefers to be built by Bevan Group in co-operation with Schmitz Cargobull. The 18-tonne chassis cabs have temperature-controlled 7.5-metre bodies and are working for a department store. The bodies were assembled at Bevan’s factory in Oldbury, West Midlands, using designs, components and materials supplied by Schmitz Cargobull. The bodies have single-temperature refrigeration units with moving bulkheads and thermostatic fans to allow for dual-temperature operation.

Quayside catch Quayside Distribution expects a ten-year trailer life using ‘fish specification’ from Gray & Adams. It supplied Quayside with two batches of single-deck trailers with fuel-saving Eco-Aer enhancements such as wide-radiused top cappings and vortex generators to smooth airflow. The trailers have single-temperature Thermo King fridges, with bulkheads and transfer fans for frozen and chilled distribution. Other Gray & Adams fish specification features are additional drain holes with ‘stop cocks’ and extra sealing of electrical and other systems to protect them from water. Quayside supplies fresh and frozen seafood to UK supermarkets, does next-day deliveries to France and Belgium and two-day services to Italy and Spain from its base in Grimsby.

News in Brief

“The New Actros is allocated to designated day and night men and both love it,” Darren Goldup, director Staplehurst Transits

Space saving is vital in cold stores where costs per foot are far higher than for ambient warehouses

Paneltex, Lawrence David and Solomon all had home delivery vehicles on their stands.

Gray & Adams, which has also launched its own vehicle for the home delivery market, puts the current size of the UK home delivery fleet at around 7,500 vehicles.

Based on an average five-year replacement cycle, this implies potential demand for some 1,500 new vehicles each year, says Steve Rose, managing director of Gray & Adams’ Doncaster factory.

Lawrence David is using an all-bonded construction on its new bodywork with no subframe to help reduce weight on its designs for 3.5 tonners.

Two vehicles, on Mercedes Sprinter chassis, showed the design, one for Sainsbury’s and a demonstrator featuring plastic steps helping to achieve the 1.5 tonne payload.

Paneltex had a 3.5t VW Crafter chassis cab with multi-drop refrigerated box body for home delivery on display. This vehicle is built to a freeze/chill specification with a GAH Super Rapier SRF21T direct drive refrigeration system and Paneltex’s direct air system. The vehicle body has a moveable bulkhead with centre door for access from one compartment to another.

Paneltex displayed a new 9.2m urban reefer trailer, one of several for Musgrave Retail Partners GB as part of its distribution fleet for the Londis and Budgens retail outlets.

Solomon has supplied Asda’s home delivery fleet. It took delivery in March of a further 250 Iveco Daily 3.5 tonne home delivery vehicles as part of a total order for 700 identical light commercials placed during 2012.

The Daily chassis cabs have Solomon multi-compartment refrigerated bodies for ambient, chilled and frozen and predominantly Hubbard fridges.

Despite the general economic gloom the larger companies have continued to use their financial resources to invest in plant, equipment, vehicles and depot/warehouse expansion. Companies investing in this way include Yearsley, Grocontinental, NFT, Turners and RDS.

While this is a positive development, most other companies in the top 25 listing overall report stagnant, or even a decline, in turnover. The trend towards expanding from chilled and frozen to ambient transport and warehousing has continued from last year with Chiltern Cold Storage and Fowler Welch just two of the companies beefing up the ambient side of their businesses.

Acquisitions were few and far between last year with most temperature-controlled operators focusing on organic growth. However, Turners, which appears in our listing for the first time, snapped up Browns Distribution last year and SDM European Transport bought a groupage exporter in the UK.

Most companies have stressed that the current financial year is likely to be equally tough, with continued pressure on margins and rates. Some of the initiatives to cut costs and improve profit include reducing empty running, the use of fuel escalators and offering more added-value services.

Suppliers, as well as operators, expect challenging times ahead for the industry. Karin De Bondt, regional director for Thermo King for the UK and Ireland, believes the road transport industry is likely to face similar challenges in 2013 as those faced during the last two years.

“In today’s conservative economic climate and with the forthcoming Euro 6 legislation, operators are looking for solutions that offer improved fuel efficiency, lower noise and improved ease of use for drivers. In addition, we expect the pharmaceutical segment to drive market growth,” says De Bondt.

Other players...Excluded from this listing are those companies, such as ACS&T and Norbert Dentressangle, where we have been unable to separate out their temperature-controlled activities for comparative purposes.

Norbert Dentressangle is especially strong in frozen goods warehousing and distribution in the UK and has 4 million square metres of frozen warehouse capacity in Europe. It also handles chilled and ambient products.

ACS&T has 12 temperature-controlled warehouses for frozen, chilled or ambient raw materials and finished products for final distribution. It is a subsidiary of Camellia, a £250m turnover company that operates in 15 countries. Much of Camellia’s revenue is generated from UK operations that include food storage and distribution, engineering, agriculture and banking.

Eddie Stobart did not appear in last year’s table and has since pulled out of its short shelf-life chilled distribution operations. Stobart’s multiple-user chilled operations, the part acquired with the purchase of Innovate Logistics in 2008, represented around 2.5 to 3% of the turnover of Eddie Stobart’s transport and distribution business.

The biggest hurdle we’d face is in the food service industry where a lot of delivery points want to close at midday or 1pm, because they work through the night loading their own vehicles and so won’t take night-time delivery bookings. Many feel opening at night to allow night-time delivery is not feasible, but people need to dare to think differently and try new methods. We need to change the thinking surrounding night-time deliveries by all working together to make it possible. The great benefit of being able to utilise your fleet in the evening and delivering 24/7 is there would be less traffic on the road, meaning faster deliveries and less fuel burned, which in turn means less emissions. We need to think greener and be innovative, not put up barriers. But at present, we are only able to double-shift about 15% of our fleet. Better vehicle utilisation would make a business such as ours even more efficient, and can yield savings. They might not be huge, but it will benefit the customer as you can lower their transport costs.

Trevor Hudson, managing director, The Ice Company

how feasible is increasing night-time deliveries?

Lisa Lavia, managing director, Noise Abatement Society

HGV movements in urban areas are often constrained during night-time periods by local regulations put in place to avoid noise impacts. Restrictions are imposed by local authorities in order to protect residents from noise and other nuisance during the late evening and early morning. However, they have the effect of increasing the number of deliveries that have to be scheduled during peak traffic conditions, thereby increasing congestion, reducing air quality and increasing the road safety risks for vulnerable groups such as schoolchildren and cyclists by concentrating freight traffic when competition for road space is at its highest.

These difficulties are further compounded for retailers who need early morning deliveries. If such night-time delivery restrictions could be relaxed or removed where appropriate, there are significant benefits for society, making our urban environments healthier and more peaceful places to live and conduct business. Working together since 2007 with the Freight Transport Association, government and local government, the Noise Abatement Society has developed a code of practice for quiet deliveries. The DfT sponsored Quiet Deliveries Demonstration Scheme has successfully demonstrated how road freight can make significant efficiency improvements by delivering out of hours, without causing a noise disturbance; and subsequent work carried out with Transport for London, to allow out of hours deliveries during London 2012, has further proved the case for investment in quieter equipment, staff and driver training and operational amendments. Consequently, there has never been a better time to unlock the business benefits of off-peak deliveries. To do so, retailers and industry must work closely together with local authorities to agree the conditions under which delivery restrictions could be relaxed while still protecting residents’ rights to a good night’s sleep.

and logistics service providers. The listing shows some impressive performances in turnover growth with Gist sales up 8.6%, Turners up 11.9% and Fowler Welch up an impressive 15.4% (year-on-year in 2011). When set against the back-drop of the UK’s sluggish economic performance that is a worthy achievement. Temperature-controlled distribution, like all transport sectors, is an industry dominated by the few, with the top five players – Gist, Turners, Culina, NFT and Fowler – accounting for 75% of the top 25 companies’ turnover. But there is evidence of tough trading conditions in this market. Certainly those companies outside the top five show less robust performance and, in two cases, reporting a fall in turnover which suggests that overall there has been little growth. However, temperature-controlled logistics is a challenging market as Eddie Stobart, which pulled out of multiple-user chilled operations, has demonstrated. That alone puts the success of our top five and the performance of all the 25 companies listed into context.

At the moment about 90% of operators have more day work than night work; getting more pm deliveries would allow far greater fleet utilisation and allow us to take vehicles off the road. However, a lot of depots don’t have staff at night to receive deliveries, so it would mean a big change for many. Whether it would be possible or not would be down to a depot’s specific restrictions.

Without a doubt though, it would make deliveries easier for firms like us. We make 75% of our deliveries during the day, so we have to run far more vehicles in the daytime. If I could split that a little more evenly it would be hugely beneficial – an increase in night-time deliveries is definitely something I’d like to see more of.

The challenge of Euro 6 legislation to the industry has yet to make its presence truly felt. It is going to have a major impact, and woe betide any of us who

think it will simply ‘go away’. On the one hand the government is taxing us to the hilt while forcing us toward ever-greener environmental performance, yet on the other they do nothing to mitigate the significant on-cost of this EU legislation, and the considerable investment being made by fleet manufacturers: the arrival of Euro 6 will put further pressure on our sector. My concern is that, as an industry, we have little idea of the future effects of Euro 6. And that’s everything from new

vehicle availability to operational impacts; there is undoubted risk in the assumptions of Euro 5 residual values. So growing numbers of operators are taking a gamble on what the future holds, with no opportunity to test their theories until it is too late. In a sector where investment levels are already huge and margins perilously small, that is a gamble too far in my opinion. Is the short-termism and focus on Euro 5 going to be a mistake that we, as a sector, will regret..?

There are some positive signs. If we look at an industry giant such as Wincanton, it’s good to see a major player showing real signs of margin growth. From the outside it appears that the Wincanton team is doing a great job at the moment and should be congratulated. The Fowler Welch operation has also seen some positive signs of late, and the importance of this re-emergence into healthier times cannot be underestimated – no profits means no investment for the future. Others are in less good shape however, and that includes some who looked, until quite recently, like the yardstick against which we would all be measuring ourselves against for many years to come. My greatest worry remains that far too many operators are still costing on a marginal basis, and in these continuingly tough economic times that is simply not sustainable. • Nick Hay is managing director of Fowler Welch

10 into the futurecold chain news may/june 2013

Thermo King celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. It’s a great history but we bring you the company’s thoughts on future trends and its new products. Karin De Bondt, regional director for Thermo King for the UK and Ireland, shows the way aheadIn 1938 the transport refrigeration business was still in the ice age, literally. Ice and salt was then the only practical way for hauliers to keep perishable shipments from spoiling. Visionary Joe Numero commissioned Fred Jones to develop technology to keep perishable produce from spoiling during transport. Jones responded about 30 days later with the first successful mechanical transport refrigeration unit and a whole new industry was born.

Almost everything about the transport refrigeration industry has changed in the last 75 years – except its mission. Now, as then, refrigerated hauliers and refrigeration unit manufacturers, dealers and service providers are dedicated to moving temperature-sensitive shipments by truck, trailer, ship or rail from A to B safely, reliably and economically.

Innovative technologies and smart operating practices enable operators to achieve best-in-class performance with their refrigeration equipment. The Thermo King SLX trailer refrigeration unit has set new standards for fuel efficiency since its introduction in 2008.

The new SLXe series, launched in 2012, raised the bar even higher. Rigorous head-to-head testing by Thermo King demonstrates that the SLXe series are around 20% more fuel-efficient than other models in its segment. This improvement was enabled by the introduction of innovative control technology to maximise performance and minimise consumption.

With traffic noise being the second biggest environmental threat to health in the European Union, Thermo King has invested heavily in research and development to meet and exceed low noise targets without compromising unit performance and reliability. Operators can now select quiet Whisper variants of refrigeration units in both truck and trailer ranges. For those requiring almost silent operation, there are units which are certified to meet and exceed the rigorous standards set by PIEK, for example the CryoTech range.

Slow global economy, highly volatile fuel prices, increasingly stringent environmental regulations and a worldwide focus on food safety and load security are putting enormous pressure on every link in the cold chain, from producer to consumer. Owners and operators of refrigerated trucks are often the first to feel the impact of industry dynamics such as fuel price volatility. Much has been done to improve the fuel efficiency of vehicle engines, but operators know that innovative technologies and smart operating practices enable them to achieve best-in-class performance with their refrigeration equipment.

Thermo King 75th anniversary

Industry leaders like Thermo King are applying current and emerging technologies and practices to help their customers meet challenges and achieve higher levels of performance with lower total cost of ownership.

These are some thoughts on what the future may hold:• Fuel economy will be a big driver of innovation. Fuel is the largest component of total operating costs for most

refrigerated fleet operators and fuel prices represent one of their least controllable expenses. • Sustainability will be a watchword for some time to come. Operators will willingly adopt environmentally

friendly products and practices if they make economic sense. • Highly efficient diesel engines will continue to power most refrigeration units on trucks but other engine

concepts and alternative fuels will be an option, such as hybrid-electric engines, all-electric and natural gas engines. Thermo King has pioneered the almost silent, zero emissions use of liquid carbon dioxide in its CryoTech trailer and truck range.

• Advances in prognostic capabilities will enable continuous improvement in refrigeration unit reliability. Predictive software and embedded sensors will detect issues before they become problems and monitor mission-critical components to maximise service life.

• Linkage between manufacturers and their dealer networks will become stronger as both parties work to ensure they are providing the best possible service to refrigerated fleet operators.

• Food safety and freshness have become priorities, driven by government regulation and consumer pressure. Advanced refrigeration systems include the capability to track, record and transmit data that can help fleet operators establish the location of a particular load at a particular time, as well as document conditions inside the refrigerated container, truck or trailer.

• Globalisation of the food supply will lead to the increasing use of intermodal transport for temperature-sensitive loads.

• Whatever the load global positioning system data and advanced wireless communications technologies provide operators with real-time and historical information about load temperature and asset location.

• The new generation of drivers and other employees expect to be able to interact with refrigeration systems using smart devices, which changes the way designers think about user interfaces.

• Intelligent solutions and advanced analytics give refrigerated fleet operators the opportunity to squeeze even more fuel economy from their refrigeration units. For example, fleet operators and their customers can work together using advanced analytics to determine the optimal set-point and control parameters for a particular load. Raising the set-point by a single degree can yield as much as a 2% improvement in fuel efficiency, according to Thermo King analysis.

• Thermo King is a brand of Ingersoll Rand and a leading provider of transport temperature control systems for mobile applications. To learn more visit www.thermoking.com/75years.

nisa to extend cryogenic refrigeration fleetNisa intends to install NatureFridge cryogenic refrigeration units on all its replacement refrigerated trucks at its Harlow depot, says Jonathan Stowe, Nisa distribution director

Nisa has trialled two vehicles using NatureFridge: a Volvo 26t rigid with Solomon Slipstream body and an 11-m tandem axle Gray & Adams refrigerated trailer. Both are multi-temperature with longitudinal lanes used for deliveries to Nisa independent retailers. The vehicles will remain in service.

The vehicles use a cryogenic refrigeration system powered by liquid nitrogen. The main benefit of using NatureFridge for Nisa relates to product integrity, says Stowe. “As a multi-drop operator, during the summer months it is particularly challenging to maintain vehicle chamber temperature when the doors are being opened pretty much every half hour.

“Mechanical refrigeration really struggles to maintain integrity in these conditions. However, the NatureFridge system can pull the temperatures straight back down and therefore give us greater control over delivering a first-class product to our customers.

“Other benefits relate to the lack of blast chilling that can adversely affect sensitive products, and the feedback from our members is that the product is ‘fresher’ and in better condition than that being delivered by mechanical refrigeration vehicles,” he says.

Fuel costs for NatureFridge and traditional diesel fridges are about the same, he says. “The cost benefit arises from much lower maintenance costs each year. However, part of our

work with NatureFridge resulted in a modification to reduce nitrogen consumption. During hot spells the NatureFridge system works continuously, but we now have a setting outside of hot weather that allows the NatureFridge to ‘cycle’ in a similar way to a mechanical fridge and this allows a significant reduction in nitrogen used.”

Low noise is an important consideration for Nisa because a large number of stores are in high-density residential areas. “The NatureFridge system being totally silent is very valuable to us – and was a key feature of our night-time deliveries in London during the 2012 Olympics,” he says.

“Equally important is the environmental benefit: the NatureFridge system emits zero CO2 emissions and therefore is an important part of our corporate social responsibility improvement plan.”

The trials have shown that total life costs of the NatureFridge system are identical to a mechanical fridge with the slight increase in capital cost being off-set by lower maintenance charges. “The benefits are not only product integrity and silent running but also the reliability of the system. With so few moving parts there is very little to go wrong with the NatureFridge system which gives it a distinct advantage over a mechanical unit,” says Stowe.

NatureFridge, sold in the UK by M1 Transport Refrigeration, is an upgraded version of the EcoFridge system first developed in 2001. NatureFridge is a refinement, borne from the various trials carried out over the last five years. A typical rigid system with a 650-litre nitrogen tank storing gas at 1.5-bar will last up to 26-hours between filling depending on the load temperature and outside temperature. A 950-litre trailer system will last up to 39-hours between fills. For mixed frozen and chilled loads with frequent door openings the consumption rate will be higher as is the case with any refrigeration system.

“Depending on running hours, NatureFridge offers users a saving of around 25-tonnes of CO2 per trailer per year. And that also means a significant fuel saving. Every hour a typical diesel-powered trailer refrigeration unit consumes about 3-4 litres of diesel and emits around 10.52kg of CO2. NatureFridge eliminates all that,” says Liam Olliff, managing director, M1 Transport Refrigeration.

The table below provides performance comparison data between a typical diesel-powered refrigeration unit and the NatureFridge cryogenic nitrogen-powered system as used by Nisa.
