Our horse puts his whole heart into his job. Put yours into his future.

Lynn Brockway Martin grew up with horses, involved with 4-H and FFA in her hometown of Tracy, Minnesota. She was an active member of the Walnut Grove Saddle Club and the Western Saddle Club Association.

Now an AQHA life member living in Centralia, Missouri, Lynn received the Farm & Ranch Heritage Scholarship from the American Quarter Horse Foundation in 2005. Courtesy of the Charles B. Wang Foundation, the scholarship supports youth members who represent the outstanding education, expertise and life skills gained through their participation in agricultural activities.

Lynn attended North Dakota State University, where she double majored in animal science and equine studies, while minoring in chemistry. Lynn’s goal was to stay connected to the equine industry. When she spent a semester abroad in Australia in 2007, an outbreak of equine influenza made a significant impact on her.

“I knew from early childhood that I wanted to follow my parent’s footsteps and become a veterinarian. So that took me to the University of Missouri where I completed the dual Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)/Master of Public Health (MPH) program,” Lynn says.

Having graduated from vet school in 2014, Lynn has spent the last year interning at a private equine practice in Texas. In 2015, she returned to the University of Missouri as a Large Animal Internal Medicine Resident in the College of Veterinary Medicine, mentoring

under researcher Dr. Philip Johnson. She plans to complete her board certification with an emphasis in equine medicine.

“AQHA and AQHF often go through my mind given how thankful I am for the scholarship I received as a senior in high school and where it has helped take me!” says Lynn.

Support for students like Lynn, who are dedicated to our horse, is imperative to the sustainability and advancement of the industry. Help us keep this passion alive within the next generation of breeders, veterinary practitioners and industry professionals.

Give the gift of higher education to our youth and donate to the American Quarter Horse Foundation’s scholarship program.

DEDICATED TO THE HORSE

Our horse puts his whole heart into his job. Put yours into his future.

FROM THE DESK OF RUTH DISMUKE-BLAKELYIt gives me great pleasure to greet you in the New Year and say thank you for passionately supporting the work of the American Quarter Horse Foundation. Although we are eager to move forward with plans for 2016, I am thankful to be able to reflect on the

accomplishments of the past year and share how you are making a difference by giving to AQHF.

Due to your generosity in supporting AQHA students, the Foundation awarded 50 new scholarships this past year. Combined with 85 renewable scholarships, the Foundation awarded $325,250, supporting 135 students pursuing a college education.

• Your gifts provided 9 grants to 7 universities for equine research totaling $395,234 in 2015. These grants focused on musculoskeletal, head trauma and immunology research, as well as funding one reproduction project.

• The Foundation also awarded 23 grants totaling $81,955 to Equine-Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) programs across the United States. These funds support educational opportunities for EAAT providers to strengthen the standards of practice, enhancing the profession, as well as perpetuating sustainability of EAAT programs.

• In July, over 2,500 attended the National Day of the Cowboy celebration at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum. The highlight of the day was affording 280 children their first ride on an American Quarter Horse.

• Throughout the year, 621 elementary students learned about the history of branding and its role in the American Quarter Horse’s job in ranching.

• In November and December, 357 students from 16 different schools took part in the 9th Annual American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum Youth Art Show.

A new year brings new beginnings, and I am pleased to begin 2016 with our new Chief Foundation Officer, Brent Davison. I had the opportunity to meet with Brent after his first month in his new position, and I am encouraged by his keen insights and assessments that will pave the way for shaping a new Foundation strategic plan in 2016.

I am also looking forward to seeing you March 11-14 at the 2016 AQHA Convention in Las Vegas. Please make it a priority to join us for our annual Foundation benefit luncheon, which is open to all attendees; but you will need to register at www.aqha.com for tickets. I know that you will be blessed by the experience.

Thank you again for all you do to support AQHF!

Sincerely,

Ruth Dismuke-BlakelyFoundation Council Chair

2015Merle Wood Humanitarian Award RecipientScared to death of horses, Dawn Forest of College Station, Texas, didn’t start out like most horse crazy kids. The mother of a daughter who became obsessed with the American Quarter Horse, Dawn was quickly educated.

During daughter Katie Schroeder’s youth career, Dawn became involved through various organizations and projects traveling from show to show. Dawn soon joined the Texas Quarter Horse Association’s youth committee and spent the next 15 plus years on the show committee and as a youth director.

Dawn began managing the AQHYA World Show team for Texas Quarter Horse Association in 1997, and in 2000 she added the AQHA Youth World Cup responsibilities to her already busy plate. Her commitment to Texas youth is unwavering.

“She seeks out youth from all corners of the state to be members of the TQHYA team and enjoy the fun of the AQHYA World Championship Show,” says Wanda Waters, past president of Texas Quarter Horse Association. “She is paving a runway for a better future for AQHA with each youth she encourages and gets involved.”

Dawn has had many roles as a volunteer with TxQHA, including serving as president in 2004; she spends countless hours each year preparing for upcoming events. She is especially looking forward to 2018 when the youth world cup returns to College Station.

A woman who wore many hats, Suzanne Jones was involved in nearly every aspect of the horse industry – from breeding to showing to riding in international competition and more.

The daughter of an Army colonel, she first sat horseback at the age of one and by five, was competing in horse shows. Her career as a trainer took off after she graduated from the University of Arizona. Four of her personally trained mounts were certified as Olympic prospects, one of which was sent to the final tryouts.

Starting in 1962, Suzanne became involved in 4-H through her children as a 4-H judge and clinician in New Mexico, and then with

the 4-H Horse School, renamed the Suzanne Norton Jones 4-H Horse School in 1992.

Suzanne judged and taught clinics on a national and international basis and held cards for the Palomino, Paint, Appaloosa and American Horse Shows associations. She served as an AQHA judge for 31 years.

In an interview, Suzanne said, “The requirements for a happy, well-adjusted life are the same in the horse and human worlds. When children understand how to bring a horse to its full potential, they begin to understand the structure of society – discipline, friendship, respect, understanding, companionship and mutual trust.”

The next time you are spending time with your horse, think about how he enriches your life and how many friends you have made thanks to that relationship. The unique bond between horses and people is worth celebrating!

Give a timeless tribute in the Wall of Honor Plaza to celebrate the horses and people who have influenced your success and made you fall in love with the American Quarter Horse way of life. The Wall of Honor is a beautiful reflection area at the front of the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas. It welcomes museum visitors from two unique perspectives. From the east, a herd of running American Quarter Horses graces the wall; from the west, granite bricks preserve and pay tribute to people and horses.

There are several opportunities to celebrate the special people and horses in your life:

• Gift Medallions $350 each - You or the individual you specify will receive a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion which lists the horse or horseperson you want to honor or memorialize (gift medallion is not installed at the Hall of Fame.)

• Hall of Fame Medallions $1,000 each - These medallions will be installed on the retaining wall surrounding the Wall of Honor Plaza.

• Plaza Pavers $5,000 each - Pavers will be installed in the Wall of Honor Plaza sidewalk.
