Simplifying Integration And Management With Server And Storage ServicesIn today’s economy, ease of integration and management are essential considerations. Carsem is a leading provider of turnkey semiconductor production and test services for the electronics industry. Founded in 1972, it offers a wide range of products. From its factories—two in Ipoh, Malaysia, and one in Suzhou, China — Carsem ships up to 100 million semiconductor products weekly. To produce this large volume with a high level of quality control, the company relied on a heavily computerized control and production system.

Furthermore, the semiconductor manufacturer has close to 500 customers, many of whom request product changes during the manufacturing process. To accommodate the input of these extra instructions, the company has incorporated IT-driven controls into different stages of the production.

“In previous years when our system went down, operations could continue without significant impact because IT and production processes were separate. Today, if the IT department experiences downtime, operators don’t know how to manufacture, which materials to use, or what the customer wants. This is because of our complex IT based production controls,” explains Ratnam, Group IT Manager, Carsem.

Faced with this high degree of complexity, a disparate hardware inventory, and growing orders, the company realized it needed to consolidate its IT environment to improve uptime, accelerate backup capabilities, and facilitate the rollout of applications.

Manufacturer Seeks to Consolidate IT Environment

The first step of the environment’s consolidation involved improving the management of connected computers in all three manufacturing sites. This resulted in an upgrade from Microsoft® Windows NT® version 4.0 to Windows Server 2008 and the Active Directory® system.The company knew it needed high performing and reliable hardware to support this software upgrade. As a result, Carsem decided to make Dell the exclusive provider of all its servers—principally because of Dell’s proven reliability and prompt support services. Dell also provides complete solutions through its partnerships with software vendors such as Microsoft.

Dell LEAP Offers Rapid Upgrade to Windows Server 2008

Carsem decided to participate in the Dell Longhorn Early Adopter Program (LEAP); “Longhorn” being the pre-release code name for Windows Server 2008. The program would enable Carsem to take advantage of improved security and policy enforcement technologies with Active Directory, as well as better server utilization with virtualization features in Windows Server 2008. Carsem also wanted to assess how Dell servers could streamline its IT environment and accelerate service deployments. Dell Global infrastructure Services deployed a test environment with two Dell™ PowerEdge™ 2950 servers and 10 Dell™ OptiPlex™ 745 desktops installed with Windows Server 2008 RC1 Enterprise.

Dell Global Infrastructure Consulting Services Help Reduce Total Project Time

During the program, Dell Global Infrastructure Consulting Services provided Carsem with six weeks of on-site consulting for Carsem’s adoption and use of Windows Server 2008. Services included workshop assessments and training, design and validation of the test system, technical deployment assistance, and project management. As Dell servers are designed to work optimally with Windows Server 2008, Carsem experienced a smooth installation. Semiconductor manufacturing demands high-speed, flawless production with

components which meet precise customer standards. Highly specialized and

extremely expensive production machines require constant updates to help avoid

downtime and production errors, either of which can result in significant output and

revenue losses due to incorrect special production files (specs), or late delivery of

products. All of these potential issues demand a highly reliable, fast, homogeneous,

Dell Servers Facilitate Fast Response to Manufacturing Business Needs

Carsem can now accelerate the deployment of applications by consolidating its test and development servers. By provisioning virtual machines with virtualization technology in Windows Server 2008, the company can now decrease its costs as well as accelerate application and infrastructure installations and upgrades. All of this while delivering comprehensive quality assurance. Virtualization, together with a Dell standardized hardware platform, allows Carsem to have better testing coverage, increased developer productivity, and improved overall user experience. Carsem can now respond dynamically to changes in the manufacturing cycle with rapid application testing and deployment capabilities.

Virtualization Increases Efficiencies for Manufacturer

Carsem has reduced its manufacturing cycle time with faster access speeds to large specs. With its improved input/output and memory processing capabilities, Dell PowerEdge servers have cut network file serving time by half. “Machine operators can now perform better with Dell PowerEdge servers and Windows Server 2008 working together to speed up access to large production spec files,” says Ratnam.

Maintenance Reduced by Using Centralized Application Access

Carsem also plans to consolidate its applications into virtual machines. This will help increase application portability and decrease the number of physical assets that can be damaged or compromised in a disaster. In the event of such an incident, virtual machines can be hosted anywhere to speed up recovery and maximize Carsem’s flexibility. The live capabilities allow Carsem to back up virtual machines without downtime. This means the entire production environment takes only an estimated five hours to back up compared to approximately 40 hours with the previous solution.

Scalable, Manageable Solution Increases Efficiency

The technology transfer from LEAP has raised the Carsem team’s understanding of implementing and adopting Windows Server® 2008. As a result, Carsem will now upgrade its entire IT and production environment to Windows Server 2008 and support it with Dell hardware.

Connection: Can you tell me some of the major attractions you’ve designed?Joe Zenas: Thinkwell has been very fortunate to work with a number of the major Hollywood studios including Warner Bros. and DreamWorks. We’ve also worked with Jim Cameron on projects and John Landis on a special event. Not long ago, we opened Ski Dubai, where we did all the snow-play activities and also have created a touring educational exhibit for Sesame Street.

Connection: How important is technology to your business?JZ: Everything we do revolves around technology, whether it’s communication, project coordination, or creating unique experiences that are typically controlled, or driven, by technology in some way.

Connection: What are the challenges you face when managing large files and how does your storage back-end help you?JZ: Every project we work on has an insane amount of information, because no two projects are ever the same. Whether it’s major CAD and architectural information that has to be transmitted or HD media files that have to be sent overseas for production services, we have a huge amount of information that’s constantly moving. It’s really important to have a solid backbone to handle that. That’s why we have Dell servers.

Plotting your course

The first step you take in moving to the cloud varies greatly depending on your role in the business and your individual business goals.

Business leaders should evaluate SaaS applications from a productivity perspective and understand the value they can bring your business. Focus on how your employees will adopt these applications and how it will impact their daily lives. Often, SaaS applications have better adoption because they look and feel like the web you surf at home – easy to access and easy to use. Frankly, that was our experience at Dell – our global sales team adopted Salesforce CRM, the leading cloud-based CRM application, with tremendous results.

For IT managers, there are several paths to the cloud. When helping the business adopt SaaS, focus on application integration. Integrating cloud and on-premise applications with cloud integration technology enhances their productivity benefit and simplifies migration. A typical integration scenario with Salesforce CRM is shown in figure 1. If you aren’t ready to move your business applications to the cloud or are uncertain where to start, begin with virtualization. Virtualization drives tremendous efficiency

benefits while at the same time priming yourself to move IT loads to the cloud in the future when you’re ready or need to scale up quickly. If you simply want a better and more cost-effective way to manage your existing environment, look at IT tools delivered as SaaS. These cloud-enabled tools deliver tremendous ROI for your business and are often the easiest to adopt for an IT organization.

Understanding The Cloud

There has been much hype and discussion of cloud

computing and it’s hard to tell what products and

services can really help your business. But as more

and more companies are learning every day, there

can be tremendous benefit to leveraging the cloud

for your business and moving forward with a clear

understanding of what the technology does for

you. All cloud computing technology is defined by

three key things: 1) flexible pricing that is generally

pay as you go; 2) scalable elasticity, which allows

you to grow up or down quickly; and 3) geographic

independence, which allows the hardware and the

user to be located virtually anywhere.

Everything as a Service

Most cloud computing technologies are consumed

“as a service,” reflective of the notion that you pay as

you go. There are three key areas of cloud computing

that are relevant for most businesses.

Software as a Service (SaaS): SaaS provides complete applications using a pay-as-you-go model, typically running on massively scalable, multitenant platforms in shared environments. These applications can be business focused, such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Sales Force Automation (SFA) applications, or IT focused, such as Remote Infrastructure Monitoring and Distributed Device Management applications.

Platform as a Service (PaaS): PaaS offers application development and production environments, enabling developers to write cloud-based applications to resell as SaaS or to customize or augment their existing SaaS applications. Force.com, the platform on which Salesforce CRM runs, is a great example of a Platform as a Service.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): IaaS offers on-demand computing resources such as servers, databases, and storage capacity, as well as infrastructure solutions such as archiving and disaster recovery.

Cloud IntegrationThe most critical concern for medium businesses making the transition to the cloud is the ability for applications to talk to one another, regardless of where they are located. This is often an overlooked aspect when making the decision to move to the cloud, but is critical to reaping the largest benefits of cloud computing. Cloud integration represents the technology to allow this communication regardless of the location of the application.

In the current economy, there’s more pressure than ever to minimize cost and risk while scaling up or down as demand rises and falls. For IT professionals, this translates into a continual need to maximize IT efficiency and flexibility.

The emergence of standards-based architectures, virtualization, and high- speed connectivity, cloud computing is primed to meet this need head-on. Although achieving the full advantages promised by cloud services is a journey that may take a few years, taking the first step now can significantly advance business efficiency and competitive advantage.

Your business has a lock on its door, as it should, but that single security measure isn’t nearly enough to keep it safe. Your data is perhaps your most valuable asset, and it could be equally valuable to others who might want to get their hands on it. What could happen if any of that information was lost or stolen?

Take a layered approach. Security must be top-to-bottom and end-to-end. You need a multilayered defense that can protect against everything from employee sabotage or a lost laptop to a cyber-attack or an earthquake.

A smart strategy is made up of distinct layers of protection:

Data protection: securing your files and records from loss or theft:

• Secure your laptops by locking them down on-site with cable locks, and train employees how to keep them safe at home and on the road.

• With Dell System Track we can remotely wipe sensitive data if your laptop goes missing. As soon as someone connects the laptop to the Internet, the data is deleted.

• Install the latest antivirus and anti-spam software. And while you’re at it, any individual desktop PC or laptop that connects to the Internet should also be equipped with a personal firewall.

• Data backups backing up and archiving your business data are mandatory parts of protecting your company. There are several schemes available: removable media; network-attached storage; tape; and automatic backup to an off-site location, the most secure method.

Systems protection: outfitting every desktop PC and laptop, network server, smartphone, and mobile communications device with up-to-date security hardware and software:

• Smart-card technology, standard on Dell Latitude™ laptops, requires the user to insert a card and then enter a password to gain access. Even cooler, biometric solutions such as fingerprint readers can be easily attached to computers to offer rock-solid authentication.

• Every server should be equipped with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) so that a power spike or brownout doesn’t destroy current work.

Network protection: building and maintaining a wall between your networks and the Internet, the place from which cyber-criminals launch their attacks:

• Include hardware and software firewalls on Internet-connected servers. Simply put, a network-based firewall is a protective barrier that prevents unwanted access to or from your company network.

• Host-intrusion detection and prevention systems. Like firewalls, they work to prevent questionable traffic from making it from the Internet onto your network.

• With password protection and encryption for WiFi connectivity, your file transfers and communications are safeguarded, and there’s no need to worry that someone is hiding outside your window with a WiFi-equipped laptop, tapping into your Internet access or browsing through the data on your server.

• A secure virtual private network (VPN) is a cost-effective solution for those employees who need to connect to the business’s network from home or on the road.

How has the EqualLogic acquisition advanced adoption of iSCSI storage?

“Customers have always been amazed by EqualLogic technology — but the acquisition took EqualLogic to a worldwide scale,” says Thomas. “Dell brought EqualLogic products to higher-end customers who probably would have been reluctant to buy from a start-up company. But they trusted the Dell brand. So together, Dell and EqualLogic made Internet SCSI (iSCSI) a household word.”

What business trends are changing the way enterprises approach storage technologies?

“Green initiatives and cost savings are huge,” says Thomas. “Virtualization plays a key role in helping achieve both goals because it allows enterprises to save power and energy. Companies are dramatically lowering their

power consumption by migrating to virtual servers and consolidated storage—because when you virtualize servers, you need to aggregate the storage to go with them to get the full benefit of virtualization.”

What benefits do storage innovations such as 10GbE and FCoE offer?

“I think the industry has declared that 10GbE is the wire of the future, which simplifies things for IT departments,” says Long. “So now it’s just about protocol. The advent of 10GbE gives enterprises a greater ability to virtualize servers and connect them to storage because they’re not as bandwidth-limited as in the past. The fatter pipe makes data mobility and replication a lot more efficient.”

Thomas agrees. “More than anything,” he says, “Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) will help enterprises that have

made huge investments in Fibre Channel to take a bridge step toward Ethernet. We’re very excited about this move, since Ethernet is generally more cost-effective.”

How will further technical innovations change the storage infrastructure?

“Virtualization vendors and storage vendors are working together to optimize the environment so each piece of equipment can focus on doing what it’s best at,” says Long. “These efforts are helping to reduce complexity and cut down on round-trips between the servers and the storage, and delegating a lot of the complex data management back down to the intelligent storage array. Basically, an optimized environment helps free up resources on the server and the network. This allows a bond between the virtualization and the storage that hasn’t existed before.”

What is the outlook for virtual-aware storage solutions across all Dell storage offerings?

“EqualLogic systems were designed specifically for a virtualized environment,” notes Long. “Normally, in storage, there’s a tie between the data and the disk it’s stored on. We’ve broken that connection. Everything can move anywhere within this logical grouping that makes sense. So as you move your server applications, your storage can move with them.”

“Servers come and go,” agrees Thomas. “But if a server goes and comes back, you want your storage to remember all of its associations, all of its snapshots. Our EqualLogic systems will re-associate everything with that server — a very important capability that didn’t exist a short time ago.”
