Deconstruction of “The Magical Apple” (Debut film) For our debut film we used Propps character archetypes and implement ed them into our own film. Kyle, who played the helper, threw a magical apple at the false hero but accidently hit him on the head and knocked him out. The hero played by myself saw the magical apple, picked it up, and took a huge bite from it; the apple grants him superhuman strength powers. The hero goes on to find the princess and the villain standing guard, and punches the villain with his new super strength and frees the princess who is relive. We used Todorov’s 5 part narrative formula in our film in three stages. The equilibrium at the beginning is the audience realising the situation of it that the villain has captured the princess (this is shown in a flashback) and now he is on the hunt for the false hero. There is a conflict between the villain and false hero in which the villain wins and walks off after the victory, this is the dis-equilibrium and finally the new equilibrium is when the hero runs after the villain to save the princess from him. Another aspect of narrative we use is Levi-Strauss’ binary opposite theory. For example there is a conflict between good and evil when the hero beats the villain at the end to save the princess from him. There is also a gender difference between the princess and the villain which is a further example of a binary opposite.  The final aspect of narrative is Roland Barthes’ which is the narrative enigma theory. When the apple has been thrown and the hero bites from it, this makes you wonder what it has done to the hero. Has it helped him? Or is it to poison him? This makes you want to watch the rest and find out what happens  The mise-en-scene in our film contained lots of different aspects such as the props which where the book that the false hero was reading, the apple which is the main prop. The bench he was sat on. The location changes for example the false hero is sat outside reading when the villain turns up and beats him. The hero then runs to the location where the princess is being held and finds the villain there with her. The flashback at the beginning has been made black and white to make it obvious. Lots of programmes or films such as Lost or The Event use flash backs to unfold the storyline and give the audience a better understanding, so we thought

Deconstruction of “The Magical Apple” (Debut

film)

For our debut film we used Propps character archetypes and

implemented them into our own film. Alex was the villain in our film andtied up the princess of the film played by Sam P. The villain then went

after the false hero, playing this role was Sam B. Kyle, who played the

helper, threw a magical apple at the false hero but accidently hit him on

the head and knocked him out. The hero played by myself saw the

magical apple, picked it up, and took a huge bite from it; the apple grants

him superhuman strength powers. The hero goes on to find the princess

and the villain standing guard, and punches the villain with his new super

strength and frees the princess who is relive.

We used Todorov’s 5 part narrative formula in our film in three

stages. The equilibrium at the beginning is the audience realising the

situation of it that the villain has captured the princess (this is shown in a

flashback) and now he is on the hunt for the false hero. There is a conflict

between the villain and false hero in which the villain wins and walks off

after the victory, this is the dis-equilibrium and finally the new equilibrium

is when the hero runs after the villain to save the princess from him.

Another aspect of narrative we use is Levi-Strauss’ binary opposite

theory. For example there is a conflict between good and evil when thehero beats the villain at the end to save the princess from him. There is

also a gender difference between the princess and the villain which is a

further example of a binary opposite.

The final aspect of narrative is Roland Barthes’ which is the

narrative enigma theory. When the apple has been thrown and the hero

bites from it, this makes you wonder what it has done to the hero. Has it

helped him? Or is it to poison him? This makes you want to watch the rest

and find out what happens

The mise-en-scene in our film contained lots of different aspects

such as the props which where the book that the false hero was reading,

the apple which is the main prop. The bench he was sat on. The location

changes for example the false hero is sat outside reading when the villain

turns up and beats him. The hero then runs to the location where the

princess is being held and finds the villain there with her. The flashback at

the beginning has been made black and white to make it obvious. Lots of

programmes or films such as Lost or The Event use flash backs to unfold

the storyline and give the audience a better understanding, so we thought

we could implement this into ours so they knew what was happening and

give a clear indication of who was who.

The target audience is teenagers upwards, because it is violent and

requires some intelligence to actually understand what is happening. We

only use a short bit of a song which is by the band Muse, their music

appeals to a wide audience so you can’t anchor the audience based on

the music. Because it is an action genre we would expect to appeal to the

male audience instead of female because of the action and fighting etc.

For the sound we used a mixture of both diegetic and non-diegetic

sound. For example at the beginning we just use the sound that the actual

camera recorded. When later on we use sound effects when the hero

turns into a super human to emphasis the action a bit more and make it

sound a bit more epic. When the hero runs to find the princess we used asong because it would be a bit boring just watching him run for a few

seconds. This song was also based on a typical western film style song so

this could anchor the audience towards the males. We thought putting the

music in would make it more interesting. When the hero saves the

princess we also used music, this time to signify a happy moment, we

slowed down the footage and used romantic music. We chose this for the

comedic style but also for the happiness in the point of the film.
