    Commitment to Sustainable Practices ofHigher Education Institutionson the Occasion of the United Nations Conference on SustainableDevelopment20-22 June 2012, Rio de Janeiro

    As Chancel lors, Presidents, Rectors, Deans and Leaders of 1-ligher Education Institutions andrelated organizations, we acknowledge the responsibility that we bear in the international pursuit ofsustainable developmenL On the occasion of the United Nations Conference on SustainableDevelopment, held in Rio de Janeiro f rom 20-22 June 2012, we agree to support the followingactions:- Teach sustainable development concepts, ensuring that they form a part of the corecurr iculum across all disciplines so that future higher education graduates develop ski lls

    necessary to enter sustainable development workforces and have an explicit understandingaf how to achieve a society that values people, the planet and proflts in a manner thatrespects the f in ite resource boundaries of the earth. Schools are also encouraged topro vide sustainability training to professionals and practitioners;- Encourage research on sustainable development issues, to improve scientificunderstanding through exchanges of scientiflc and technological knowledge, enhancingthe development, adaptat ion, dif fusion and transfer of knowledge, including new andinnovative technologies.- Green our campuses by: i) reducing the environmental footprint through energy, waterand material resource efficiencies in our buildings and facilities; li) adopting sustainable

    procurement practices in our supply chains and catering services; iii) providing, sustainablemobility options for students and facul ty ; iv) adopting effective programmes for wasteminimization, recycling and reuse, and v) encouraging more sustainable lifestyles.- Support sustainability efforts in the communities in which we reside, working withlocal authorities and civil society to foster more liveable, resource-efficient communities thatare socially inclusive and have small environmental footprints.- Engage with and sha re results through international frameworks, such as the UNDecade of Education for Sustainable Development, led by UNESCO, the VN Universitysystem, the UN Academic Impact, the Global Compact, the UN-supported Principles forResponsible Management Education initiative and the VN Environment ProgrammesEnvironmental Education and Training, in order to exchange knowledge and experiencesand to report regularly on progress and challenges.
