December/January 2017
President’s Message…
As the old saying goes “all good things must come to an end”. In December my three years as president comes to an end. I want to thank all of the people who have been on the TIHAA board over the last six years. Without their dedicated support and efforts, my job and this club would not be possible.
I extend my congratulations to our new president, Jean Houston, and to the other officers for 2017 – Vice President Mary Brown, Secretary Della DuHart, and Treasurer Lola McMann. I encourage everyone to help Jean and all the other board members help our club continue to thrive next year and the years to come.
With the closing of the TI-Stafford fab, the number of retirees eligible to join TIHAA is dwindling. It is more important than ever for all of us to reach out to our TI friends and encourage them to join TIHAA. I ask all of you to contribute your ideas for luncheon speakers, day trips, or evening events, to entice more people to join the TIHAA.
Near the end of this issue of the vigor you will find our 2017 membership roster that you can remove and use for reference to contact other TIHAA members. I encourage you to call folks you know that haven’t attended recent meetings and invite them to attend one of our lunch meetings.
My thanks to all and may everyone have a blessed holiday season.Best Regards,

Lindsay Davis, Sugar Land Cultural Arts Manager speaks at November Lunch MeetingAt our November 9th Lunch Meeting, Daryl Moss introduced our guest speaker, Lindsay Davis, Cultural Arts Manager for the City of Sugar Land. Lindsay is the first person to hold this position with the City, and is tasked with overseeing the execution of the Cultural Arts Plan and creating and executing the city’s first Public Art Plan. Lindsay studied Art History and Arts Administration at the UT Austin and Columbia Univ. in New York. She earned a Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Art at New York Univ. She is a certified fine and decorative art appraiser. She worked at a number of recognized art galleries and auction houses in New York City prior to coming to Sugar Land.Lindsay held the attention of our 39 TIHAA members and guests in attendance as she made her PowerPoint presentation. She covered the cultural locations that the city has in operation at this time, as well as other locations that are shown in the Cultural Arts Strategic Plan and Implementation Guide, an 82-page document which is online on the City of Sugar Land’s website. It was enlightening to see her list of all the current cultural arts locations around Sugar Land:• Sugar Land Town Square Plaza• Sugar Land Auditorium• Sugar Land Art Center & Gallery• The Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center• Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land• Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center & Heritage Museum• Imperial Rec CenterLindsay showed an artist’s concept photo of the Sugar Land Festival Site that will be constructed between the new Texas Instruments building and the SmartFinancial Center. It can easily accommodate outdoor events, as well as used as a nice family park in the city.Lindsay then showed some of the things she had in mind as she is tasked with creating and executing the city’s first Public Art Plan. The Vision 2025 plan is for “Art Everywhere throughout the City”. Public art is being considered for new projects and private development - they are in process of developing the plan. Lindsay showed a real enthusiasm for her job and answered several questions from the audience at the conclusion. You can find out more at www.sugarlandtx.gov/culturalarts.In addition to her job, Lindsay is actively involved with the Bayou Bend Docent Organization as a board member, the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the University of Texas’ College of Fine Arts Advisory Council.

At the November 8th Lunch Meeting, TI retiree, Yaoqi Pang attended to say goodbye to all her TIHAA friends, as she prepares to move to the State of Washington. Yaoqi told friends gathered for the lunch how much she enjoyed attending club activities, even though she had been limited in the past with family responsibilities that affected her participation.
As a tribute to her love for the TIHAA family, Yaoqi sang the old spiritual, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, for the group gathered for lunch. She received appreciative applause from the group at the conclusion.
The Daughters of the British Empire, of which Susan Leigh is a member, held their 2016 Festival at Fluor Daniel, Sugar Land, on Saturday November 12th. Susan is regent of Pickwick Chapter and Tony Leigh plays the part of the Bobby during the festival.
The Pickwick chapter hosted the pub where customers could purchase a Ploughman’s Lunch and beer or wine. The DBE had a very successful day and sold out of food near the end of the lunch period.
The photo shows the traditional English Ploughman’s Lunch being prepared to be served in The Pickwick Pub and the Baked Goods stall. All the food was prepared by the members of Pickwick Chapter. In addition to the pub and baked goods
stall members of Pickwick chapter had a Lavender stall, a Teatime stall and a Stamp stall.
Susan’s chapter made over $6,000, all of which goes to local charities.

December/January 2017Second Annual Senior Expo - October 12, 2016
by Daryl Moss
The second annual Senior Expo 2016, promoted as free, fun and educational, was well attended by many familiar faces from TIHAA. It was the first time for many of us. Upon entering the Stafford Centre, we saw many booths lining the entry hallway, and many, many more (over 67 advertised in total) filling the large rooms to the side. The local businesses covered health, wealth, transportation, fitness, housing, insurance, retirement, entertainment, sports, and more. An amount of freebies on the tables was huge, including cloth tote bags, inscribed pens and notepads, candy, and stacks of printed literature. Everyone had plenty to take home. The free continental breakfast — doughnuts, cookies, coffee — was self-served in two rooms (far left and far right) along the back. For those that stayed for the free hot lunch [800 meals were ordered/catered from Off the Vine Bistro], it consisted of a roll, mixed vegetables, mashed potatoes with chives, large ravioli in sauce and a chicken breast, with tea or coffee for drinks. Tasty and satisfying. The informational seminars were held in a large, upfront vigor WWW.TIHAA.ORG Page of 105

room near the entrance. Typically 35 — 55 were in attendance for the presentations, but the room held 100 chairs. Each guest speaker(s) had to rely on their printed sheets or notes, since the projector was not working. Five speakers were scheduled, beginning at 9:15, with 15 minute intermissions between each, so it was impractical to attend all the seminars if one wanted to visit (read and pick up literature) and talk to the owners, employees, or
service representatives behind the tables.Speakers in 2016:
1. Andrew Kulha, Kulha Law, LLCTexas Estate Planning: A Plan for your Family's Future2. Gail Peacock, Overture Sugar LandReinventing Retirement, Lifestyle and You3. Sondra Ford/Michael Wilhelm/Nikki Ellios, Trusted Senior SpecialistsMedicareing, Advocating, Creating Solutions4. Dr. Vandana Khera, Methodist Hospital Sugar LandWhat Older Adults should know about Health & Wellness5. Tarek Fakhouri, Advanced DermatologyBasics of Skin Cancer, Prevention & Treatment
Gail Peacock's seminar was very informative on the 5 senior housing options: active living; independent living; assisted living; memory care (for Alzheimers or dementia); nursing home (skilled nursing), She said considering baby boomer aging, about 10,000 per day are turning 55 or older. Many thanks to the Fort Bend Star and Overture Sugar Land for organizing and underwriting this excellent Senior Expo, kudos to all sponsors.

December/January 201710 Ways to Stay Mentally Young
Older brains, like older bodies, can continue building new mental connections. As life spans continue to lengthen, it's becoming increasingly clear that our brains as well as our bodies are amazingly resilient and adaptive. Even 90-year-olds can build new muscle mass through physical exercise. So can their brains, although what's being developed is not new muscle but new synapses. And while some of the exercise that produces these effects is physical, most of it is mental. When U.S. News reported and wrote the e-book, "How to Live to 100," expert after expert extolled the benefits of continued strenuous mental and physical exercise into and throughout old age. These are not new benefits. But what is new is the accumulating evidence for how dramatically these activities can promote healthy aging, help ward off physical and cognitive decline and illnesses, and add years to our lives. Of course, the nation's free-enterprise system has taken notice and we have become inundated with a flood of "brain gain" exercises and tools. Trying to make sense of them and evaluate their claimed benefits is above my pay grade. But we do know a few basic aspects of what our brains "like." Most of all, brains like to work. But the work that seems to do the most good entails fairly challenging thinking about new subjects. In learning new things, the brain creates new synapses, or connections, between neurons. And more synapses and a denser web of connections are associated with maintaining cognitive health in older age. Doing predictable things, even if challenging, appears more likely to use existing neural pathways. This is not a bad thing and being engaged with tasks can be beneficial. But newness is the key here. And as it turns out, it is common for older people to engage in fewer new activities as they age, and even to withdraw into narrower circles of behavior and interactions with other people. With that in mind, here's a list of 10 things experts say can help keep your brain young, even as your chronological age increases. 1. Learn a new language. This is at the top of many lists for activities that give your brain a real workout and force it to create new pathways to learn. 2. Learn an instrument. Well, maybe the kazoo doesn't qualify here. But the combination of learning new physical skills on an instrument and also learning to make music is great mental exercise. And music seems to unlock memories even in people with advanced dementia. 3. Get lost. Go to an unfamiliar area and force yourself to navigate it. We're not talking about a war zone, but perhaps a new neighborhood or strange museum or other venue that's new to you. Realizing you have the skills to deal with new situations builds confidence, and gives your brain a workout. 4. Volunteer. Getting involved in a new endeavor will introduce you to new people and activities. Broadening your circle of friends and acquaintances is healthy on multiple grounds. 5. Get uncomfortable. This is another variant of getting lost. If we only engage in comfortable activities we know, part of us stops learning and growing. Accepting the feeling of being a bit uncomfortable—with new surroundings, activities and people—is a good way to help yourself become more open to new experiences and learning opportunities. 6. Be physical. Assuming your doctor approves, aggressive physical exercise is good for your body and, research is finding, also great for cognitive health. Even moderate exercise has big payoffs. 7. Play new and challenging games. Your brain loves to play. In fact, play appears to have a stronger role in human development than for any other animal on the planet. Again, it helps fire up those new synapses if the game is new and not too easy. 8. Take classes. Exposing yourself to new ideas, classmates and even classroom settings hits several of the targets that experts associate with cognitive health.
9. Embrace new technology. Staying connected in a digital world may seem like an uphill slog you don't want to take. But it can have huge brain-health benefits, as you learn new things and connect with new people and ideas. 10. Keep opening new doorways. Your brain is endlessly curious about the unknown and appears to be a sponge for new ideas and experiences. You should be, too.
