Last month, November 17, I lost a goodfriend and the pastor of my parish church.Father Bob Bultman was a priest’s priest -someone they could talk to and seek councilfrom. He served on the priest’s personnelboard for many years. The fact that he was

well liked by his fellow priests was attested to at his funeral - over 60priests participated at his funeral on November 20th.

At the funeral, the Bishop told thestory about a recent letter FatherBob had written to his family. . .

Jesus says:“I am the light of the world, andwhoever believes in me, eventhough he should die, will live forever.”“ I do believe.”

Robert Bultman

Father Bob was also an avid supporter of St. Meinrad where he attend-ed all 12 years of his schooling. (4 years of high school, 4 years ofcollege and 4 years of theology.)

I attended St. Meinrad for 3 years and Father Bob came the year I left.Just this past summer, he worked with me on our St. Meinrad cam-paign and he had such a love for his alma mater.

Father Bob had a great sense of humor and was very quickwitted. One Saturday night mass the folk group sang what soundedlike the Sons of the Pioneers. As soon as they finished, Father stoodup and said “Did anyone see Roy Rogers ride through?” Well, thecongregation broke into laughter and then applauded.

Our family has known Father Bob and his sister, Betty, all ofour lives. My father knew his dad and uncle, Pete Bultman. Mymother grew up in the north end where his family lived. His sisterBetty was at his bedside when Father Bob was close to death. Henoticed tears streaming down her face. Father couldn’t talk, butimmediately asked for a pad of paper. He scribbled out the words “Notears - I do believe.”

Old Tavern Club Cheese - A Tradition

Old Tavern Club Cheese was first introduced to theVincennes area in the 1950’s by Ingham Strong, whomanaged the Saiter Morgan business located at 7th andCollege. We are not sure about the Strong family’s his-tory, but believe they were from Wisconsin and wentback to the Waukesha area where they are still runningthe Old Tavern Food Products Company with JillStrong as President.

Bernie started purchasing thecheese for the lumber compa-ny to sell during the holidaysin the late 60’s. It has sincebecome a tradition that everyyear around Thanksgiving thefirst order arrives for the holi-days. We have customers thatstart calling as early asOctober inquiring as to when the first order will bearriving.

On weekends and special events, we offer customers ataste of the delectable cheese spread on crackers. Thecheese is purchased for personal gifts, corporate gifts, holiday recipes like cheese balls and hors ‘d eouvres, orjust family snack time. It is packed in small, mediumand large cups and small, medium and large jars as wellas a collectible Christmas jar.

Twas the Night Before Xmas -Dieter's Version

Twas the night before Christmas and all round my hipswere Fannie May candies that sneaked past my lips.Fudge brownies were stored in the freezer with careIn hopes that my thighs would forget they were there.

While Mama in her my girdle and I in chin strapsHad just settled down to sugar-borne naps. When out in the pantry there arose such a clatterI sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the kitchen I flew like a flashTore open the icebox then threw up the sash. The marshmallow look of the new-fallen snowSent thoughts of a binge to my body below.

When what to my wandering eyes should appear:A marzipan Santa with eight chocolate reindeer! That huge chunk of candy so luscious and slickI knew in a second that I'd wind up sick.

The sweet-coated santa, those sugared reindeerI closed my eyes tightly but still I could hear;On Pritzker, on Stillman, on weak one, on TOPSA Weight Watcher dropout from sugar detox.

From the top of the scales to the top of the hallNow dash away pounds now dash away all.Dressed up in Lane Bryant from my head to nightdressMy clothes were all bulging from too much excess.

My droll little mouth and my round little bellyThey shook when I laughed like a bowl full of jelly.I spoke not a word but went straight to my workAnd to all of the candy then turned with a jerk.

And laying a finger beside my heartburnI gave a quick nod toward the bedroom I turned.I eased into bed, to the heavens I cryIf temptation's removed I'll get thin by and by.

And I mumbled again as I turned for the nightIn the morning I'll starve... 'til I take that first bite!

Christmas Quickies

When you stop believing in Santa Claus is when you start get-ting clothes for Christmas.

It was Christmas and the judge was in a merry mood as heasked the prisoner, "What are you charged with?" "Doing myChristmas shopping early," replied the defendant. "That's nooffense," said the judge. "How early were you doing thisshopping?""Before the store opened," countered the prisoner.

Holiday Humor

Ways To Confuse Santa ClausInstead of milk and cookies, leave him a salad, and anote explaining that you think he could stand to losea few pounds.

While he's in the house, go find his sleigh and writehim a speeding ticket.

Leave him a note, explaining that you've gone awayfor the holidays. Ask if he would mind wateringyour plants.

While he's in the house, replace all his reindeer withexact replicas. Then wait and see what happenswhen he tries to get them to fly.

Leave a note by the telephone, telling Santa thatMrs. Claus called and wanted to remind him to pickup some milk and a loaf of bread on his way home.

While he's in the house, find the sleigh and sit in it.As soon as he comes backand sees you, tell him thathe shouldn't have missedthat last payment, and takeoff.

Leave a plate filled withcookies and a glass of milkout, with a note that says,"For The Tooth Fairy. :)"Leave another plate outwith half a stale cookie anda few drops of skim milk ina dirty glass with a note thatsays, "For Santa."

Take everything out of your house as if it's just beenrobbed. When Santa arrives, show up dressed like apoliceman and say, "Well, well. They always returnto the scene of the crime."

Leave out a copy of your Christmas list with last-minute changes and corrections.

Leave lots of hunting trophies and guns out whereSanta's sure to see them. Go outside, yell, "Ooh!Look! A deer! And he's got a red nose!" and fire agun.

Leave Santa a note, explaining that you've moved.Include a map with unclear and hard-to-read direc-tions to your new house.

If you’re giving electric toys for gifts this year, there are several things tokeep in mind for choosing, using, and storing toys.

• Don’t buy an electrical toy - or any toy - for a child too young to use itsafely. Always check the age recommendation on the shelf package. Andremember that this is only a minimum age recommendation: not every 8-year-old is necessarily able to safely handle a toy for children of that age.Keep the specific child in mind when you choose a gift.

• Read the toy’s instructions carefully and then read them again with anychild who will be playing with the toy. Be sure that the child knows howto use the items safely, understands all the instructions and warning labels, and is aware of the hazards of misusing the toy. The instructions shouldbe kept with the toy or in a safe place where they can be found easily.

• Always supervise children when they're using any electrical product.• Be sure that the plug of an elec-trical toy fits snugly into wall out-lets or (if they must be used)extension cord receptacles. Teachchildren always to disconnect anelectrical appliance after use bygrasping the plug, not by pullingon the cord.

• Keep infants and toddlers out ofthe area in which an electrical toyis being used.• All electric toys should alwaysbe in a dry storage area out of thereach of younger children immedi-ately after use.• Check the condition of your child’s electric toys often. Look for anybroken parts, frayed cords, or other damage. Have the toy repaired orreplaced if you notice any damage.• Only an adult or a responsible older child should replace a light bulb onan electrical toy; it is extremely important that the replacement bulb be theproper wattage and that the plug is disconnected when the bulb ischanged.• It’s best to plug electrical toys and children’s products into a GFCI-pro-tected circuits.• Children’s electrical toys are covered by several regulations; to check onthese requirements, go to the Consumer Product Safety Commission Website at www.cpsc.gov. You can check any toy you're considering for yourchildren against these requirements to be sure it meets current safety stan-dards. Consumer Product Safety Commission

Things Not to Say WhenHanging the LightsDid you know that hanging lights on aChristmas tree is one of the three most stress-ful situations in an on-going relationship?Six's Psychiatrist claims the other two dangerzones are teaching your mate to drive andwallpapering. (He is rarely wrong on thesethings.) We rush to print with an emergencyprompt list of Things Not To Say WhenHanging Lights on the Christmas Tree.

"You've got two red lights right next toeach other, dummy. You're supposed togo yellow, green, red, blue, not yellow, red, red, green, blue..."

"Up a little higher. You can reach it. Goon, try."

"What the hell do you do to these lightswhen you put them away every year? Tiethem in knot?"

"Come away from that aluminum ladder, kids. I'm going to fry that sucker."

"If you're not going to do it right, don'tdo it at all. Don't just throw them on,like you do the icicles. You're worse thanyour father."

"Give me that!"

"You've got the whole thing on the treeupside-down. The electric pluggee thingshould be down here at the bottom, notup at the top."

"I don't care if you have found anothertwo strings, I'm done!"

"You've just wound 'em around andaround - I thought we agreed it shouldn'tlook like a spiral this year?"

"Have you been drinking?"

"Where's the cat?"

The Candy CaneCandy canes have been around for cen-turies, but it wasn't until around 1900that they were decorated with red stripesand bent into the shape of a cane. Theywere sometimes handed out duringchurch services to keep the childrenquiet. One story (almost certainly false)

that is often told aboutthe origin of the candycane is as follows:

In the late 1800's acandy maker inIndiana wanted to

express the meaning of Christmasthrough a symbol made of candy. Hecame up with the idea of bending one ofhis white candy sticks into the shape of aCandy Cane. He incorporated severalsymbols of Christ's love and sacrificethrough the Candy Cane. First, he used aplain white peppermint stick. The colorwhite symbolizes the purity and sinlessnature of Jesus. Next, he added threesmall stripes to symbolize the paininflicted upon Jesus before His death onthe cross. There are three of them to rep-resent the Holy Trinity. He added a boldstripe to represent the blood Jesus shedfor mankind. When looked at with thecrook on top, it looks like a shepherd'sstaff because Jesus is the shepherd ofman. If you turn it upside down, itbecomes the letter J symbolizing the firstletter in Jesus' name. The candy makermade these candy canes for Christmas,so everyone would remember whatChristmas is all about.

The Miracle of the Poinsettia

The poinsettia or"Flower of the HolyNight" as the Mexicanpeople call it, bearsbright red flowers atChristmas. The legendbehind the Christmasflower is about a young girl who wantedto take a gift on Christmas eve to laybefore baby Jesus at midnight mass. Shehad nothing and no money. Angelsappeared to her on the way to mass andtold her to pick a bunch of weeds. As shewalked into church everyone laughed ather but as they mocked the end of eachbranch burst into beautiful red flowers.

A Matter Of MoralsTwo sisters were given parts in a Christmas

pageant at their Church. At dinner that night, they got into an argument as to who had themost important role. Finally the 14 year oldsaid to her 8 year old younger sister, "Well, you just ask Mom. She'll tell you it's muchharder to be a virgin than it is to be anangel."

A Christmas Gift

A guy bought his wife a beautiful dia-mond ring for Christmas. After hearingabout this extravagant gift, a friend of hissaid, "I thought she wanted one of thosesporty four-wheel-drive vehicles."

"She did," he replied. "But where was Igoing to find a fake Jeep?"

Signs of Christmas Everywhere

• Bridal boutique: "Marry Christmas."• Outside a church: "The original

Christmas Club."• At a department store: "Big pre-

Christmas sale. Come in and manglewith the crowd."

• A Texas jewelry store: "Diamond tiara’s-- $70,000. Three for $200,000.

• A reducing salon: "24 Shaping Daysuntil Christmas."

• In a stationery store: "For the man whohas everything... a calendar to remindhim when payments are due."

Three Wise Women?

Do you knowwhat would havehappened if it hadbeen Three WiseWomen insteadof Three WiseMen?

They would haveasked directions, arrived ontime, helpeddeliver the baby, cleaned thestable, made a casserole and brought prac-tical gifts.

A Nice Smelling Christmas

The little girl was SO proud of herChristmas presents, her first watch andher first perfume. She really made a pestof herself throughout the morning, goingup to all the relatives and sticking thatwatch in their ear and insisting that theysmell her perfume.

The preacher was coming for lunch, butbefore his arrival, the girl's mother hadsaid, "If you mention that watch or thatperfume just once more, I'm going tosend you to your room for the rest of theday."

The meal went rather well, and the little

girl held her tongue until just when the

desert was being served. She wanted to

make sure that the preacher, too, knew

about her new watch and her perfume:

"If you hear anything or smell anything ...it's me!"
