SHARING A LOVE OF MUSIC WITH THE MORETON BAY COMMUNITY UPCOMING CONCERTS AND EVENTS

MBSO would like to thank Mary Cupitt for the work she has done for many years of putting Newsbeat together.

Unfortunately, our Friends’ Convener Mary Cupitt will be stepping down from her role in 2016 making this the very last edition of Newsbeat! Next year the eNewsletter sent via email will replace Newsbeat! See our tribute to Mary on Page 2

Exotic Lands

We do hope you enjoyed MBSO’s last concert. All three ensembles enjoyed performing the program of ‘exotic’ music - especially those challenging works – Scheherazade and Dvorak’s Overture to the Opera Vanda.

Nationalistic Composers Our previous concert, Nationalistic Composers, also went well. All three ensembles performed to their usual high standard with Vivaldi’s Spring conducted by Alexander and

performed by concertmaster Katie Lawton. Unfortunately we have since farewelled Alexander as he has moved to Hobart to complete a Masters’ Degree in orchestral conducting.

2016 Concert Series

Our 2016 Concert Series is now out! Get ready for what MBSO has planned for you next year. Check out Page 2 for the full list and dates for next year. MBSO Youth Symphony & Junior Strings Auditions

Once again, we have had a wonderful group of young musicians audition for places in the 2016 Youth Symphony and Junior Strings ensembles. We look forward to rehearsing with all new players next year. We still need trombones, a tuba and oboes for the 2016 Youth Symphony, so if you know of anyone who would be interested, please let us know.

MBSO’s Christmas Concert

Can you hear the sleigh bells ringing? Join MBSO as we celebrate the season with music written for this joyous occasion. The concert will feature classic carols, carols from Australia and powerful orchestral arrangements of much-loved Christmas music. Get ready to sing along to some and enjoy the music written for movies based on Christmas stories. Joining MBSO, the Youth Symphony and Junior Strings ensembles will be the JAFA Community Choir, vocalist Julie McCoy and MC Ros Booth. Time: 2:00pm Date: Saturday, December 5 Venue: Grace Chapel, Grace Lutheran College, Rothwell.

Mary Cupitt has been part of the MBSO orchestra community from its very beginnings as the Margate Music Group through the days of the Redcliffe Orchestral Society, to the days of the Redcliffe City Orchestra (RCO) and now in its present form as MBSO. Mary has played a wide range of instruments including clarinet – which she was playing when I joined the orchestra in 2006. Mary has been part of the management committees over many years

and was instrumental in establishing the Friends of RCO – a role she continued when RCO amalgamated with the Seaside Orchestra four years age.

Even when she had retired from playing, Mary has been active behind the scenes - creating this newsletter, promoting the orchestra, organising the music library and selling raffle tickets at each concert. We would like to sincerely thank Mary for all her work over the years.

What is a Lute? The lute is a long necked stringed instrument which looks like a pear from the side and is extremely light. The end of the pegboard is bent at a sharp angle. The lute originated in the near East & was brought to the west at the time of the Crusades. It was known to the Arabs as the al'ud.

In the fifteenth century the stringing and tuning of the lute changed. This allowed for group playing and also enabled the lute to accompany singers. John Dowland was a virtuoso on the lute and wrote a ‘Short treatise on Lute-playing’. The finest European lutes were made in Italy and their makers were called luthiers Even today some violin makers advertise as luthiers. One of the last to compose for the lute was Johann Sebastien Bach. Today the lute’s delicate mute sound has made a come-back and people are again using this ancient instrument.

‘O Holy Night’ was the second piece of music to ever be

broadcast on radio, in 1906.

Gemini 7 astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell asked to have ‘I'll Be

Home For Christmas’ played for them while they were in orbit in

1965.

‘Jingle Bells’ was originally written to be sung during Thanksgiving

time, not Christmas.

The melody for ‘Deck the Halls’ dates back to the sixteenth

century and the original Welsh lyrics are about celebrating New

Year’s Eve, not Christmas.

There is a sequel to ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer’, entitled ‘Grandpa's Gonna Sue the Pants

Off Santa’.

1. Everyone should play the same piece. 2. Stop at every repeat sign and discuss in

detail whether to take the repeat or not, the

audience will love this a lot!

3. If you play a wrong note, give a nasty look to

one of your partners.

4. Keep your fingering chart handy, you can

always catch up with the others.

5. Carefully tune you instrument before

playing. That way you can play out of tune

all night with a clear conscience.

6. Take your time turning pages.

7. The right note at the wrong time is a wrong

note (and vice versa).

8. If everyone gets lost except you, follow

those who get lost.

9. Strive to get the maximum NPS (note per

second). That way you gain the admiration

of the incompetent.

10. Markings for slurs, dynamics and ornaments

should not be observed. They are only there

to embellish the score.

11. If passage is difficult, slow down. If it's easy,

speed it up. Everything will work itself out in

the end.

12. If you are completely lost, stop everyone

and say, "I think we should tune”.

13. Happy are those who have not perfect pitch,

for the kingdom of music is theirs.

14. If the ensemble has to stop because of you,

explain in detail why you got lost. Everyone

will be very interested.

15. A true interpretation is realized when there

remains not one note of the original.

16. When everyone else has finished playing,

you should not play any notes you have left.

17. A wrong note played timidly is wrong note.

A wrong note played with authority is an

interpretation.

Two, three or four tones can be played simultaneously on a stringed instrument. The tones must be written on strings which lie next to each other so the bow can touch both strings. Certain intervals are easier to play than

others. Corelli and Vivaldi both used double stopping to add colour to their compositions.

Bibier tuned his violin to intervals other than the usual perfect fifth. This made it easier

for him to play many double and triple stops. Paganini also used much double stopping to dazzle his audience.

Edward Grieg, the composer who brought to music the Norwegian spirit in the songs and dances of his native country was born in Bergen. He was taught the piano by his mother. She also taught him many of Norway’s beautiful folk songs.

At fifteen, Greig was sent to study music in Germany at the Leipzig Conservatory. There he started to write music in the Romantic style of Schumann and Mendelssohn. After five years at Leipzig he returned to Norway where he formed societies to promote the sounds of that country. In 1869 Grieg gave his first highly acclaimed performance of the Piano Concerto in Copenhagen.

A few years later Greig wrote background music for Ibsen's play ‘Peer Gynt’. From this music he arranged two suites for symphony orchestra. These became well known and popular throughout the world. ‘Anitra's Dance’, ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ and ‘Aase's Death’ are still played frequently today. To show appreciation, the Norwegian government provided Grieg with an annual income so he could write without the need to provide for himself. When Greig died he was given a State Funeral.

Grieg travelled little, preferring to stay in Norway to write his large works - three violin sonatas, a cello sonata, a piano sonata and a string quartet- as

well as many shorter dances and songs. His style was highly influenced by the Norwegian folk melodies - ‘Ich Liebe Dich’ (I love you") is one of the most popular of concert songs today.

Honoured at home, Grieg was also honoured by England, France, Germany, and Sweden. Contemporary composers Liszt, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky

admired his work and American Edward MacDowell dedicated his ‘Norse Sonata’ for piano to Greig.

His gentle, musical harmonies have appealed to people of all ages and countries and continue to enchant us today.

To find the temperature when both Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal, we use an old algebra trick and just set

ºF = ºC and solve one of the equations. So the temperature when

both the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales are the same is -40 degrees.

DON'T DENIGRATE HOME SCHOOLING

Many ‘oldies’ were taught at home.

Mother taught them to appreciate a job well done: If you are going to kill each other, do it outside. I've just finished cleaning. Mother taught religion: You better pray that will come out of the carpet. Father taught time travel: If you don't clean up, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week. Father taught logic: Because I said so, that's why. Mother’s logic: If you fall out of that tree and break your neck, you won’t come shopping. Mother taught foresight: Make sure you wear clean underwear if going out in case of an accident.

Father taught irony: Keep crying like that and I'll give you something to cry about. Mother taught osmosis: Shut your mouth and eat your dinner Mother taught contortion: Just you look at that dirt on the back of your neck. Mother taught stamina: You'll sit in that chair till that spinach is all gone. Mother did the weather: Your room looks as though a tornado has gone through it. Mother taught about hypocrisy: If I've told you once, I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate.
