One of our favourite places has always been The Feathers Hotelin Woodstock. We have been to eat many times to celebrateBirthdays and Anniversaries but we have never stayed the nightthere. So arriving on a crisp November evening we were welcomed with areal log fire and then shown to our very own sumptuous suite. Thiswas the start of a very special evening. There is nothing better than going down to the bar for a pre dinnerdrink knowing that that’s it and you are not leaving until afterbreakfast! What’s more The Feathers boasts the foremost dedicated gin bar inthe country. Testament to this is that they do serve Mahon Gin whichis my favourite gin, and not to my knowledge to be found in any otherbar in Oxfordshire. And boy! they certainly make a great g and t! whichbrought back happy memories of Menorca.Sue had her customary glass of champagne while we decided what toeat. Whilst deliberating we were introduced to Pete Saunders the HotelManager. We had a lively discussion and we congratulated him on hisappointment and then Pete kindly gave us a run down of the menu thatevening. After some debate, I decided on the native East Coast Lobster Ravioliwith fennel and orange butter sauce and Sue went for the salad ofOxford Blue cheese with, walnuts and beetroot marshmallow. For main course we shared the Peg Top Farm Dexter Beef Double Ribwith Autumn vegetables, gratin potatoes and red wine sauce. The beefwas served and carved at the table by Magic (that was the name of ourwaiter by the way) who was extremely attentive throughout our meal. The bar manager is Nuno, who comes from Portugal and helped uschoose a lovely bottle of Rioja Crianze, Conde de la Valdemar 2009. Wealso had a bottle of still Harrogate Water. For dessert Sue had the selection of farm house cheeses with driedfruit chutney and artisan biscuits whilst I went for the strawberry andlavender Eton Mess. The ingredients however weren’t at all messy asthey were separated on a slate and were beautiful. So our special evening was really amazing, the atmosphere waswonderfully relaxed, cosy and convivial and to know that we just hadto go upstairs was the icing on the cake.We laid in and got down for breakfast well before last orders at10.00am and surprisingly devoured the salmon and scrambled eggs.We had had a very special stay and can’t speak highly enough of thewhole experience.Market Street, Woodstock, OX20 1SXTel: 01993 812291Web: www.feathers.co.uk

Betrayal by Harold PinterSaturday 30th November: The play centres on an affair and it’s consequences.Emma is married to Robert, a publisher. But for seven years, has been having anaffair with Jerry, a literary agent, Robert's best friend. In a clever dramatic devicewhich really works well for the audience, the play starts after the end of the affairand charts significant events in reverse. It draws out all sorts of betrayals, betrayalsof others, and ourselves. It includes Pinter’s trademark economical dialogue, and heskilfully draws out the character’s self absorption, and deceptions. And it is funnytoo! Times: 7.30pm Tickets: £14.50, £13 (concs)

Jdp M@SH Series - Advent Wassail Sunday 1st December: An Oxford tradition in the making, the Advent Wassail isback by popular demand. M@SH takes a fresh look at traditional carols and wassailsongs, exploring their roots in the rich heritage of British, Irish, and Appalachianfolk music. This concert is an appealing and thoughtful take on the familiarChristmas repertoire, and is the perfect way to start Advent and get in the festivemood. Time: 8pm Tickets: £5 on the door

Jdp Piano Series - Daniel TongThursday 5th December: HAYDN Variations in F minor. BEETHOVEN PianoSonata in F minor Op.2/1. HAYDN Fantasia in C major. HAYDN Piano Sonatano.52 in E flat major. A frequent visitor in recent years, Daniel Tong will doubtlessbe familiar to JdP audiences – and we look forward to his return, this time withmusic from the heart of the piano repertoire. Two pieces by Haydn, rooted in thewitty and amiable genre of the divertimento (Fantasia in Cmaj & Variations inFmin), are contrasted with two expansive and substantial works – Haydn’s grandand imposing final keyboard sonata, and Beethoven’s stormy first effort in thegenre. Time: 8pm Tickets: £20 gallery/ £15 stalls/ £5 students

Jdp Chamber Music SeriesSaturday 7th December: MATTHEW TRUSCOTT (violin), ROBIN MICHAEL (cello),DANIEL TONG (piano) Piano Trios by HAYDN and BEETHOVEN. Haydn’s late pianotrios contain some his most subtle, lyrical and witty music. Indeed, eminent pianistand writer Charles Rosen has called these pieces ‘the most brilliant piano worksbefore Beethoven’ – so it is apt that this evening’s concert also features a piano triofrom the latter composer. Full of typically Beethovenian energy and dynamism, the trio’s ‘Ghost’ nickname appears to refer to the eerie and mysterious middlemovement. On a pleasant November 5th, we took the short taxi ride fromHeadington to the exquisite Vanbrugh House Hotel, Oxford’snewest hotel and restaurant in St Michael’s Street. Oxford wasbusy. Not only was it Firework’s Night, but The Oxford Union wasa hive of activity, - the hotel is located directly opposite thisOxford institution. The hotel has a welcoming lounge area which doubles up as areception with no unnecessary fanfare. With just 22 individualbedrooms and suites, checking in and out is more of a laidback affairin boutique hotels, and within minutes we were being show to majesticVicarage Suite. As the pictures show, not only is the room good enoughto stay in for an eternity, the bathroom leaves you spoilt for choice –bathe in one of two baths or shower AND watch the TV?!?!? Options, options! Our attentive host, Michaela, showed us on to the gorgeousprivate terrace, which must be heaven in the summer for breakfast ora drink before dinner, and, no doubt, after! The room is superb, quitepossibly one of the best we’ve ever stayed in.We made our way to the restaurant located in the basement of thehotel. The restaurant is perfect for the hotel and it’s a perfect hotelrestaurant. Tina and I were really impressed. The food was excellentand the service second to none. We enjoyed our starters and mains buthad little room for dessert until we were offered a special treat fromthe chef, a trio of desserts on one plate. How we could go fromstruggling to accommodate one dessert to finishing off three is beyondme, but we did it in style!Although it was barely past 10pm when we finished, we decided on anearly night – well, it was a week night – and fell asleep watching the TVin that fabulous four poster. I seem to remember telling you it was aweek night, but best laid plans and all that and we were up at 8.30am– oh dear! A good hour after we were supposed to get up. Never mind, work could wait. Getting ready in that bathroom was a Disneylandexperience! I had a bath but had to at least sample the incredible free-standing shower as well. And then it was off for the final scene.Breakfast in the restaurant. Fresh fruit, naughty pastries, cereal, freshjuice and an even naughtier Eggs Royale – poached egg with salmon forme and Eggs Benedicte for Tina. The perfect start to the day.We said our goodbyes and thank you’s and wondered how on earthwe could justify going back. I’m sure we’ll think of something. If youneed to recommend a hotel in Oxford, then The Vanbrugh ticks all ofthe boxes, BUT, I strongly recommend you try it out for yourself first, just to be sure!20 - 24 St Michael's Street, Oxford OX1 2EBTel: 01865 244622Web: www.vanbrughhousehotel.co.uk

As the rain sheeted down outside, the lure of the roaring logfire was hypnotic. Like rather bedraggled moths to a flame, wedragged ourselves onto the comfy red leather settees, andwarmed ourselves before the dancing flames. The Silver Fox & I were early for lunch, so we investigated theextensive draught beer selection, working our way along the generousbar, from left to right. We were about to reset left, when ourimpersonation of a human typewriter was thwarted, and we wereshown to our table, tastefully decorated in black & cream, reflectingthe Chequers motif. Purely in the course of due diligence, we chose our wines by the glass- 16 of them, kept under vacuum in a Verre de Vin, not to mention thechampagne and sparkling wines, catering for both the familiar and theadventurous. So armed with an adventurous Brazilian Pinot Grigio and a familiarAustralian Reserve Chardonnay, we tucked into our sublime starters -crab risotto for me and mushrooms in truffle oil for the Silver Fox.A hulking fish pie then materialised, peeking out from beneath a duvetof fluffy mash, whilst my pork belly came delicately presented on awooden platter, with triple-cooked chips nestling alongside in theirown basket. I had been hoping for some leftovers, but the Fox hadmade a clean kill, and was now busy polishing the edges of his bowl, pronouncing himself extremely satisfied. Meanwhile, the Rioja hadmysteriously evaporated, so we moved on down the wine list, to anorganic Sangiovese, pleasurably dry, with soft tannins. It was still distinctly bandit weather outside, so rather than take anychances, we decided to stay put, and collect our just desserts. Mypopcorn pannacotta was attractively presented on a black slate slab, the creamy hinterland juxtaposed against the salted caramel outskirts. For somebody who ‘never eats dessert’, the Fox had done asurprisingly efficient job, only a few crumbs providing a clue to thedeep purple blackberry and almond slice that had sat there a fewmoments previously. As we lingered over coffee, conversation turned to the blackboardstory of the Secret Highwayman behind us, whose harness wasevidently discovered last century, hidden in the pub’s chimney breast. We decided that as smash and grab raids went, he could have doneworse than to have simply stayed inside at The Chequers - cooking ofthis quality, really is a steal. What made dinner at Kazbar on the Cowley Road so enjoyablewas the atmosphere –great live music, authentic décor and, bestof all, really friendly staff. From reserving a table to ordering foodthe Kazbar staff were helpful – advising me that there was liveflamenco music on Thursday evenings and there would be a goodcrowd (they weren’t kidding!), and helping make selections fromthe menu.We arrived at 7.30 while the restaurant was still quiet, were warmlywelcomed, shown straight to a table and began to soak in ourMoroccan/Spanish surroundings. The restaurant has a range of smalland medium tables with Moroccan textile cushions and metal lamps, providing intimate spaces for couples and larger spaces for groups. The drinks menu offers a range of imported beers and medium pricedmostly Spanish wines (£15-£25 per bottle), as well as cocktails with aMoroccan twist - we tried an excellent Moroccan Ice Tea and GoldenMargarita as well as a couple of glasses of a very tasty Malbec. The foodmenu, using specialist imported ingredients, continues the authenticSpanish feel with a range of tapas, divided into sections of dips andmezze, cheese, meat, fish, vegetarian and specials, with six to eightoptions on each. This choice, while not intimidating, made selectingfun but tricky, with advice from the waitress we ordered a range ofdishes. They arrived beautifully presented in their terracotta bowlsand every one of them was delicious – the Babaganoush (auberginedip), Harrisa Potatoes, and Chorizo with Prawns were particularlygood! As we enjoyed our food the restaurant filled up with a mix of students, couples, groups and music fans there to enjoy the flamenco band. Themusic was excellent, the atmosphere buzzing and the food delicious. The food was only part of the experience as Kazbar welcomes a rangeof guests by offering half-price tapas before 6pm to suit the studentbudget; live Spanish music on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, draws in the local Spanish crowd; while in the summer tables on thestreet and opening the roof turn this bit of the Cowley Road into a pieceof the Med!Overall Kazbar pressed all the right buttons, combining greatatmosphere, good food and drinks, excellent staff, and good prices. It’sa great venue on the Cowley road either as a local or as a change, butonce visited you’ll certainly be back again!25-27 Cowley Rd, Oxford OX4 1HPTel: 01865 202920Web: www.kazbar.co.uk

We visited The Evenlode on a wintery Monday night, so the sight of a big burningopen fire in the restaurant was a welcome one.

David, the owner, was very passionate and knowledgeable about food and wine andexplained that his wish was to create a fine dining experience for his more discerningguests, sectioning off a certain area of the restaurant next to the fire where guestscould enjoy their meal in privacy.

Our meal began with starters of crab & lobster lasagne (£8.95) which had a goodflavour of both.  The mushroom and black truffle ravioli (£8.95) had generous shavingsof black truffle and very enjoyable.

The palate cleanser of lemon and champagne sorbet was a nice touch.

Onto our mains. The pan fried skate wing with capers (£24.95) was a delicious andenjoyable dish.  My guest had the Welsh rack of lamb with minted butter (£25.95)which had a more dramatic appearance served pink and juicy with paper frills on thebones no less.  We enjoyed a generous selection of potatoes and vegetables.

There is a good choice of fine wines on the wine menu.  David recommended a bottleof Chateauneuf du Pape (£49.95), served in large glass goblets - this was certainly awelcome addition to the meal.

Leaving little space for desserts I had the chocolate fudge cake whereas my guest hadthe cheese board with a dizzying array of great English cheeses to choose from.

The service was very attentive and friendly throughout.  A leisurely amount of timewas left between courses so the whole meal was a relaxed affair.

The restaurant welcomes children and has an area where you can take dogs inside. They also have a huge garden that comes to life with a bouncy castle in the summer.

The Evenlode’s specialty is a carvery which you can enjoy throughout the week, especially popular at the weekend.
